Summer 2015 Vol.2 ISSUE 2 Summer 2015 MUNSANG COLLEGE CONTENTS Newsletter Address: 8 Dumbarton Road, Kowloon City, Kowloon, HKSAR Telephone: 3655 3300 Fax: 3655 3324 Email: [email protected] 2015 High Flyers Scheme ‘Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.’ Zig Ziplar (1926-2012) American author and speaker P.1 2015 High Flyers Scheme P.3 Cultural Exchange P.6 Co-curricular Activities P.10 Careers P.11 Guidance Prefect Association P.12 Music P.13 Physical Education At Munsang, we encourage students to fly high to an altitude on a par with the sky. All of them can achieve it. as long as they have the determination to do so. Take this to heart: Genius is one percent inspiration, but ninety-nine percent perspiration. It is my honour to join the High Flyers Scheme this year. I am pleased that this scheme provides me with a mentor to nurture me and give me the utmost care throughout my senior secondary school life. Not only can the High Flyers Scheme bring together teachers and students, but it can also let us aim high and fly high. I am looking forward to the coming meetings and projects in the scheme which can help me a lot in academic study and most importantly, in my future life and career planning. Your favourite snack is a chocolate bar which costs $10. One day, you are given $100. Will you make a bee-line for the chocolate bar or buy a pack of rice that costs 80 dollars? In the High-Flyers meeting, our alumnus adviser, Mr Wong Chung Kit, mentioned this intriguing metaphor. In our life, we are given plenty of opportunities. Some may defy our imagination and distract us from our original intention. However, we should never forget to follow our dreams. Although dreams may seem untouchable like the distant stars in the sky, they are the motivation in our life. Moreover, Mr Wong emphasized the importance of prioritizing our tasks. The trick is to be as ruthless as you can stand, prioritizing until you only have one task to focus on right now, so you can’t help but get to work. This is particularly useful when you’re drowning under a million things to do which prevent you from meeting deadlines. F.5F Tam Wing Chi My progress, slumped during study leave. I felt lost and devastated with the seemingly endless assessments. Serendipitously, my notepad one day reappeared from my mountains of books and notes. I read through the tips Joseph gave us. ‘High Flyer is not a label for you, but more of a vote of confidence in you from the college.’ This quote of Joseph’s miraculously and magically revitalized and rejuvenated me in a sense that I no longer stood alone. Following the little tips Joseph shared with us, I shattered the wall of lack-of-confidence and found another way to stand and fight. F.6B Ching Heng Markus Alumni Mentor, Mr. Joseph Chan Ping Hung (Class 1991) Alumni Mentor, Mr. Wong Chung Kit (Class 1998) Being a typical Munsang student, I have been working on my academics from the first day I stepped into the NSS curriculum, which has been notoriously demanding. Soon, the college put the High Flyers Scheme notice on the blue board and I was one of the lucky ones selected. I thought it would involve some extra drills to brush up on our academic skills (an innocent thought though). We were, surprisingly, invited to a number of sharing sessions by a renowned alumnus, Mr. Joseph Chan. He shared his experiences and tips on effective learning, and examination stress relief. It is said that something is not worthcherishing until you are desperately in need of it. This is so true. I noted down the tips on my notepad, but had them all hanging in the air very soon after. 2 Munsang College Summer 2015 Vol.2 AFS returnee visiting Germany as her Graduation Trip in June 2015 Cultural Exchange Munsanger Viki Lam spent a year studying in Germany back in 2012-13 and returned to Hong Kong to finish Form 5 and 6. As a treat for herself and to recapture lost memories, she visited Germany again after completing her HKDSE exams. To be able to set foot again in this exotic yet familiar land is so unreal! I left for almost two years but nothing has changed! It’s just like travelling back in time! “Exchange is not a year in your life; it’s a life in your year.” I can’t be more grateful for all the changes and experiences that happened to me in my exchange year and I hope I can keep coming back! F.6C Lam Wai Kei,Viki Mini Cultural Fair II organized by PTA & CEA on 19th May 2015 I joined the Mini Cultural Fair for the first time and was astonished by the fun and breath-taking experience. Learning Italian numbers through scarf-snatching was really thrilling and the most unforgettable part was trying on gorgeous Korean costumes. My classmates and I could not stop laughing. I broadened my knowledge about various cultures through this cultural fair and I look forward to the coming fair! F.1A Luk Wing Sum, Sonia Holding the Mini Cultural Fair II with our helpful and dedicated parents was an exceptional experience as it was a day full of experiences to enhance the intercultural atmosphere at school. We definitely had a blast with parents and students from both the primary and secondary sections, enjoying foreign food and music and trying costumes of different countries. We thank our school for the valuable opportunity to have this fair. F.5E Mo Ka Lun, Boris Head Cultural Exchange Ambassador Local Exchange Programme with Ying Wa College from 22nd to 24th Apr 2015 I was privileged to have lessons and interact with one of the brilliant exchange students, Alan, the Head Prefect of Ying Wa College. He was easy to converse with and respectful in manner. He showed genuine interest in different lessons and was able to interact with our teachers effectively. I believe he displayed the inner qualities of a good student, as well as a true leader. F.5F Wong Cheuk Hei, Matthew Deputy Head Prefect & Cultural Exchange Ambassador Munsang College 3 www.munsang.edu.hk Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Programme – JENESYS from 8th to 16th February 2015 4 Munsang College The Head of Cultural Exchange, Angelica Lee (F.5C) was chosen as one of the 63 Hong Kong student representatives to participate in JENESYS, the exchange tour to Japan. “He who travels far knows much” - I was honoured and blessed to represent our school and through this trip, I was exposed to the fascinating Japanese culture and its intriguing historical sites. I learned about the three “Rs”, namely Respect, Responsibility and Reflection. It was definitely worthwhile and I am always going to remember these 8 days in the years to come. F.5C Lee Wan Yan, Angelica Head Cultural Exchange Ambassador Summer 2015 Vol.2 Dinner with Antonio, his Host Family, the Kongs, and Mrs. Sarah Negro, the Deputy Consul General of Italy, and her husband, Mr. Giorgio Benassi on 2nd April 2015 We all had a wonderful time together and it has been a while since I have seen any Italians, so it was truly thrilling to have such a chance to catch up with my compatriots and Sarah and her husband were both exceedingly generous and friendly. My family and host brothers were also amazed at the precious experience. F.4C Antonio Angellotti Dinner with Alissa, her Host Family, the Chungs, and Mr. Erwin Luthi, the Deputy Consul General of Switzerland on 27th March 2015 The preparation was in full swing once my host family and I heard about the honourable guests we were going to host on Friday. Delicious Chinese food and a traditional Swiss dessert stood ready on the table when Mr. Erwin Luethi, Deputy consul General of Switzerland, Mr. Thomas Wong, programme director of AFS, and Mr. Kan came to our house. We spent a cheerful evening together, where lots of mind-blowing and scintillating stories were told by the well-travelled. In the process of organizing the programmes, students could identify their own strengths and build their self-confidence. 8 Social Service Award Scheme Flag-Selling In order to encourage our students to participate in social services and contribute to our society, our school set up the Social Service Award Scheme in 2006. Until now, our schoolmates have been awarded more than 2,300 (2,377) badges. This year 139 students got the award . Through this scheme, we hope to motivate students to serve others of different classes in society so that they can widen their horizon , learn to respect and care for others and to be responsible. All of these outcomes are valuable qualities for life and growth. All Form 4 students were invited to participate in one flag-selling activity this academic year. Three Flag-Selling Days were organized for them by February, 2015. In addition, some F.3 to F.4 students were invited to be volunteers on the Flag-selling Days in April and June . This charitable event enabled students to help the needy in society and this was a wonderful experience of giving hope to others through care and love. Munsang College Summer 2015 Vol.2 Campus TV Dream Comes True Here we shout “Our dream comes true!” In November, our Campus TV team participated in the Build Bridges, Social Innovation Video Competition which was co-organized by the SIE Fund and Youth.gov.hk. With our mobile nursery bus idea, we were are more than grateful to win the 2nd-runner up out of the 70 entries by over 200 students from 56 schools in Hong Kong. Low-income families are in need of affordable and reliable child care services. Often, in these cases, either both parents are too busy to take care of their kids, or they are unable to increase their family income as one parent has to stay home to take care of the kids. A mobile nursery may provide some help. On the bus, nannies will help look after the kids and check their homework; operating as a mobile nursery means saving on monthly rental costs, and by travelling around, children get to see more parts of the city. Small ideas are now going to be turned into big projects to make a huge difference in society. Our idea was showcased in the “Social Innovation Jam” held by the SIE Fund in shopping malls to arouse public awareness. 30/4-6/5 Tseung Kwan O Metro City Plaza II 7/5-12/5 Ma On Shan Sunshine City Plaza 13/5-19/5 Kwai Fong Metro Plaza 8/6-14/6 The ONE We are undergoing a feasibility study of the execution of our mobile nursery bus with the Efficiency Unit of the Government of Hong Kong and the School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Animals Hate Us I was almost going to cry my eyes out after watching the documentary ‘Yeung Yeung with Cows’. Yeung Yeung is not like us normal modern citizens; she has her love and care for animals and the environment. She took absolute good care of the cows that people abandoned and treated them like adorable human babies. Even though she couldn’t do much, she outdid herself, all because of her understanding of the importance of environmental protection. She did not just recycle plastic bags, she did what we would rarely do, she took care of wild animals. Nothing beats urban development as the hottest issue in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has the money to renovate everything and to clear any ‘excessive’ rural area ‘for the sake of people’ providing us with glorious shopping malls may sound pretty attractive, but definitely not to cows. All the cows in the documentary were relying on Yeung Yeung, not because they were lazy, but because they were helpless. Cows used to live by themselves, without any help from humans. Those were the times when Hong Kong still had not been developed so much yet, farmers could be easily found, and they kept cows on farms. Nowadays, we can hardly even see a single farmer or a cow. The farmers did not need help from cows, because they either gave up on being a farmer, or they found a new job. Cows are often seen wandering around hills, looking for food, except when there is not much food. I felt so unsettled after realizing the fact that people treat animals like nothing. De De had an infection and his life was soon to be gone, and Yeung Yeung was the only one standing beside him, showing him support. The director of the documentary showed us a normal day for Yeung Yeung. She was just working for cows, without any entertainment. However, she was so into it. After all, she was an angel. People often say that urban development and environmental protection can be balanced easily. But we know it is not that easy. To be realistic, we often have to sacrifice either economy or environment. When we want grand malls with air-conditioning, we need to use undeveloped lands; when we want to spend time in spacious parks, we need to give up air-conditioning. However, it’s not all about what we want. The thing is, there are animals living in Hong Kong, and we honestly cannot easily put ourselves in their place. Even after watching ‘Yeung Yeung with Cows’, I could just conclude that the cows were not happy at all, but the feeling is not as strong as watching a human baby crying for food. Not many of us worry about wildlife, because we usually do not see the problem. The Hong Kong government seems to be into environmental protection, by setting up the plastic bag levy etc. However, the big thing is not just about recycling, or turning off the lights. I think all of us know what the big thing is, deep in our hearts. According to WWF, about 23% (1,130 species) of mammals and 12% (1,194 species) of birds are considered threatened by IUCN today. Global biodiversity is being lost much faster than natural extinction due to changes in land use, unsustainable use of natural resources, invasive alien species, climate change and pollution among others. Land conversion by humans, resulting in natural habitat loss, is most evident in tropical forests and is less intensive in temperate, boreal and arctic regions. Pollution from atmospheric nitrogen deposition is most severe in northern temperate areas close to urban centers; and the introduction of damaging alien species is usually brought about through patterns of human activity. Inevitably, human activities often bring harm to wildlife, for example: chopping down trees for timber leads to the loss of animal habitats. With the high living standard of Hong Kong citizens, we demand more and more, while we harm the environment more and more. Anyway, it is not simple for us to help cows or the environment. If I did not get the chance to watch all those documentaries, I would have hardly considered environmental protection as such a serious issue. I sincerely wish everyone in Hong Kong, or even around the globe, can really, think about what we are doing to our planet Earth. We are very pleased that our Swiss exchange student, Alissa Frick, received the Outstanding Performer Award. This weeklong activity which combines presentations and competitions from various subjects and forms has definitely broadened my horizons. Through being a debater in the Geography Debate, I was given a precious opportunity to enhance my English speaking skills. In my opinion, a cross-platform and dynamic activity like LAC Week not only arouses the interests of students, but also motivates us to explore more and expand our knowledge. I could feel the enthusiasm among participants and the audiences towards the breath-taking performances. Take the Science Day as an example, the audience had an opportunity to vote for their favourite product made by the presenters. This facilitates our interaction and adds spice to the learning process. F.4A Fok Ho Man, Carson Debater and EASE Member Drama Club is my favourite CCA and it has been exhilarating and unforgettable to have fun acting and learning with the young and energetic fellow schoolmates and I love the fact that Mr. Christianopoulos is remarkably passionate about acting. The competition was a great experience as we supported each other and displayed strong team spirit. As a result, I was able to put on my best performance and it was an honor to win the Outstanding Performer Award. F.4B Alissa Frick Drama Club Member Friday Fest (EASE X EA) from September 2014 to May 2015 “One small step for English Ambassadors, one giant leap for English learning” For two years, we have been striving to enhance the English competency of our Primary Six students by holding rousing English activities and games during lunchtime every Friday. This year, with the emergence of EA (English Ambassadors) in MSCPS, we are able to take the experience up a notch. Through mentoring and bonding with the EA weekly, both students of EASE and EA students have been infused with enjoyment and skills necessary for the enrichment of our English learning environment. 20 Munsang College English Exchange Programme with St. Patrick’s School on 6th March What a way to celebrate our anniversary and my last days in Munsang! Having been an EASE member for nearly all my school life, we savored the unprecedented opportunity of having an English exchange with Primary Five students from St. Patrick’s School. We learned tongue twisters, danced, laughed and learned English in an exceptionally fun way. The 20 of us, ranging from Form 1 to Form 5, enjoyed ourselves as much as the primary students as we were able to instill joy and happiness into them through enticing English games. Green Education This year, we conducted a study on biodiesel. We learnt many things about the properties of bio-diesel and the chemical theories behind through the preparation work before manufacturing the bio-diesel (watching videos from the internet). Through the various processes, we also obtained many experimental skills as well as a better understanding of bio-diesel. We were all glad that we could make a satisfying bio-diesel product at the end, and we thank teachers of Science Society who gave us the task of making the bio-diesel, and also gave us much helpful advice. We are going to continue our project by using the glycerin produced in the making of bio-diesel to make soap in the coming summer holiday. F.4A Tse Hoi Yan Bio-diesel presentation in LAC week (22nd April 2015) The reason why we chose bio-diesel as our project this year is that we wanted to explore more about renewable energy and try to make our lives more ‘green’, which means converting the used oil into useful diesel for vehicles. The process of making bio-diesel was not that easy. The most difficult part was that we needed to use titration method to know the proportion to neutralize the acidic used-oil. As there are always errors in experiments, we have spent all together around 7 hours doing that. Bio-diesel demontration to Ping Shek Catholic Primary School (19th March 2015) We also did experiments comparing the efficiency in boiling water by using normal oil and the bio-diesel, and the result is very significant and delighting that the bio-diesel This year, we had a chance to take part in Charity Plant Sales in the school. With the cooperation of Interact Club and Science Society, we have learned lots of different knowledge and skills which cannot be gained from textbooks. We all benefitted a lot in various stages, including planning, farming, promoting and even selling. As for myself, I was equipped with basic farming skills in Science Society over the past few years but the promotion skills could not be gained much there. We have exchanged our various kinds of knowledge and skills in order to ensure the charity plan could run smoothly. Interact Club contributes the marketing skills and poster designing skills, while Science Society contributes the scientific knowledge and practical skills in farming. Charity Sale to Primary and Secondary teachers (12th-13th March 2015) Charity Sale to Kindergarten teachers and parents (24th, 28th March 15) Though we have spent a lot of time on this charity activity, it was worth while to do so as we met so many parents and teachers in Munsang College Kindergarten, Munsang College Primary School and Munsang College who supported by donating money to help the needy people of the world. Reflection Definition of Learning Community Classroom teaching should be studentcentred which also holds true when teachers become students in the 科研課 堂. In fact learning should be practised by Essential Qualities of Effective Learning The following essential qualities of effective learning must be clearly seen not only among students in class, but also among teachers in the 科研課堂, as those conducted in Tokyo University Attached Junior High School in Tokyo and Shimone Junior High School in Ushiku. • Peer learning in groups (even in Sports, Visual Art and D&T lessons) with lessons being interactive and students owning the learning process • Peer assessment through discussion and feedback given for presentations • Peer encouragement & reminder at all times to be encouraged • Keen listening by both teachers and students throughout the learning process (voice volume of both teachers and students being very low in class) • Constant and frequent self-reflection during the learning process • Passionate care and strong support among students and teachers, and also between students & teachers • High expectation on the learning outcomes • Be honest to accept one’s own limitation (e.g. students’ feedback to teacher’s question: “I don’t know the answer.” teachers’ response to colleague’s comment: “I am particularly weak in ….” • Be open-minded in the face of others’ frank, harsh and negative comments Ms Kuby Chan Principal Munsang College 29 Parent-Teacher Association www.munsang.edu.hk
