THE BASILIAN December 2015 OFFICIAL MONTHY NEWSLETTER OF ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Stockton, CA Volume 29 Issue 12 PRINCE OF PEACE “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) This passage comes from a prophecy from the book of Isaiah which was proclaimed in the 8th c. before Christ was born, and it refers to the Nativity of our Lord. I want to specifically highlight the title, Prince of Peace. Christ is the Prince of Peace. It is Christ’s peace which is one of the most precious gifts that we can receive this Christmas. Why is this peace so desirable? It is easy for us to be troubled, afraid and anxious especially due to concerns over our family, friends, occupation, and health; and yet, Christ offers us the following: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).” We see with these passages that Christ’s peace will keep our hearts and minds from being troubled, afraid, and anxious. Christ is willing and able to offer us this peace and yet how do we allow Him to do so? One way is by finding a quiet time during the day and dedicating that time to “be with God”. This time can be as little or long as time permits, but it needs to be something—it has to be a time where we are alone with God and with our thoughts. We need to speak to God as a friend, because He is our friend. God is here to help us, to listen to us, to free us from the burdens of our life, to guide us in making life-affirming and healthy choices, to grant us peace. During this “time with God”, read the Bible passages of the day (which you can find either on your Orthodox calendar or on the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese webpage—goarch.org) and see how through those passages God grants us His peace. We also can experience this peace by treating others as we would want to be treated no matter how they may treat us. Gestures and acts of kindness, goodwill, forgiveness, charity, compassion and mercy towards all people help us to experience peace of heart and mind. Lastly, we can experience this peace by coming to the house of God, the Church, the house of love, renewal and peace and receiving the Prince of Peace in the most intimate of ways possible---Holy Communion. By receiving Communion on a regular basis, combined with the recommendations above, we will experience the peace of Christ, the most precious gift we can receive this and every Christmas. THE BASILIAN + December 2015 PRESIDENT’S CORNER “I never get to celebrate Christmas, I’m always too busy getting ready for it” a neighbor told me a few days ago. We had run into each other at the grocery store (one that takes SHARES cards, by the way) and were both in a hurry to get our shopping done and get through the checkout line. She meant the rushing around, shopping deadlines, crowded stores and airports, of course--all the pressures we put on ourselves that make the season seem like a countdown rather than a celebration. But is that what Christmas is for a Christian--a one-day-a-year celebration? On the contrary, it seems to me we don’t really celebrate Christmas on Christmas day itself. Christians celebrate Christmas in the weeks and months afterward, as we reflect on and give meaning to the gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus and the first people whose lives were radically changed by their encounter with the infant Savior. The shepherds who found Jesus lying in a manger, shared the news of great joy told them by the angel, and went home glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. Simeon, who immediately recognized the infant as the salvation prepared by God, and a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles. The prophetess Anna, who recognized the infant as sent by God for the redemption of His people. These people were looking for God and immediately recognized Him and believed—and they are models for us in looking for the meaning of Christmas. I pray that we will keep all these things and ponder them in our hearts, and that they will transform our lives. In this way we will truly celebrate Christmas. Veronica Gatrousis President ST. BASIL SUNDAY SCHOOL Greetings to all, As I write to you this month I am thinking about the Christmas holiday. No matter how much you plan, each Christmas always comes faster than the last. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas there are only three weeks of Sunday school. Our Sunday school teachers are helping the students understand and appreciate the importance of celebrating the birth of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and how this celebration of his birth relates to our precious Orthodox Christian faith. On December 20th the children will be making an offering of faith and love with a short Christmas performance after liturgy. BASIL PRESCHOOL Our Thanksgiving Chapel with Father Pete and a couple of our parents was extra special this year! Father talked about all the food items on our Thanksgiving tables and all the many blessings we have here in our homes and school. The children knew right away the food they had collected and brought to school will be used for families that don't have as much. It was truly special watching each child place their gifts on the carts for the needy. I especially loved the comment from a four-year-old, "We forgot the plates!" We will be presenting our annual Christmas Program on December 18th at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend. May our Lord and Savior richly bless you this Christmas and through out the new year! BASIL DANCE GROUP THE BASILIAN + December 2015 7 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Our November 1st Turkey Luncheon was very successful, both in fellowship and financially. Many thanks to the Bestolarides family and chief organizer, Gayle Maduros. There were many volunteers. Our thanks to all. 170 people were served. The net proceeds were $2,000 plus. December is off to busy month. The Women’s Wellness and Health group meets each Friday 1:30 pm, led by Patty Manuse and Kathy Walton. It is doing well. Everyone is welcome. Patty and Kathy are also looking into starting another ministry called Angel Babies. More on this later. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm. Light the Path Christmas Luncheon to be held Ascension Cathedral in Oakland. It is not too late to join the group traveling from St. Basil on December 12. See the invitation on Page 14 in this issue of the Basilian. The Philoptochos ladies will have a BAKE SALE in the Hall during coffee hour following Liturgy and prior to the assembly meeting on December 13. The proceeds from this sale will benefit the St. Nicholas Shrine at the Trade Center Memorial Site in NewYork City. Saturday, December 19, is the date for the Christmas Brunch at Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar in Lincoln Center. Hopefully, our Metropolis theology student, Jennifer Rice, will be home from Holy Cross and can join us. Andy and Jennifer Pappas went to great lengths to meet our time schedule, so let’s support them by attending. Let’s have a great turnout. The time is 10:00 am, and the cost is $18, including tax and tip. After this lovely brunch, we can all go over to the St. Basil Christmas Party to meet Santa, watch the children do arts and crafts, and sing a few Christmas carols. Philoptochos continues their endeavor to assist Haven of Peace, a local shelter for women and children. This year-long project brings us to the final month of December. Thank you to all who have generously donated inens and other necessities in November. December is meat and non perishables, and we already have a generous donation of frozen meats to start the month. We need to step up and contribute more than we have recently. Please use your S.H.A.R.E. cards at Smart Foods. We are short this year, and we need to help those in need at Christmas time, too. Note the poster in the church hall next to the large basket, indicating the current requests. Also, please donate small gifts for moms, i.e, gloves, hats, perfumes, lotions., etc. Maria Bestolarides has given us crocheted scarves for the children and small gifts of books for all ages. It varies from week to week during these busy months. Please refer to the Crab Feed Committee’s article on Page 9, of this issue, stating the Crab Feed has been cancelled. We have started plans for a March 5th shrimp, chicken, and tri-tip dinner.. We will wrap up the month providing coffee and refreshments after vespers for the Feast of St. Basil on Thursday, December 31st. Bobbe Xenos President 8 THE BASILIAN + December 2015 PHILOPTOCHOS CRAB FEED CANCELLED It has been decided that the Crab Feed for 2016 will be cancelled. The Philoptochos and the Crab Feed committee have decided to cancel this event because of the uncertainty of the situation with the crab and other ocean fish on the Pacific Coast. This is not only a California problem, it also stretches to Oregon and Washington. There is an algae that is being found inside of the crab and can cause health issues. Rather than take a chance on any possible liability and illness to our patrons, it has been decided to forego this event. We are planning another event in its place. On March 5, 2016 we are planning to hold a Shrimp, Chicken, and Tri-tip Feed. It will include the same pasta and salad. We will try to include a different dessert. We hope that this will interest more people, and we will have better attendance. We look for your support in this change and hope you will be there for us. We will still need some monetary help and donations for the Raffle Prizes, and we will still include the bake auction. Look for more information in future BASILIANS and bulletins. Thank you in advance for your understanding and help. Crab Feed Committee PHILANTHROPY Thank you to all the generous parishioners who have donated non-perishables for the Emergency Food Bank’s Thanksgiving food drive. In addition to the boxes of food, our St. Basil SHARES cards have generated another $800 cash for the purchase of turkeys and other meats for the Thanksgiving baskets. Thank you for your generosity in sharing with families in need during this holiday season. We welcome donations of food year-round to support the food bank’s ongoing mission of providing food and other services to the needy of our community. Please continue to bring your donations to the church hall on Sunday and during the week. Our philanthropy project during December will be the Christmas Giving Tree. We will again have the opportunity to donate gifts and funds to purchase gifts for needy children, and holiday food boxes for low income families through the Salvation Army’s Giving Tree Program. Look for details in the Sunday bulletins, and come to the Parish hall after liturgy to select Angel Tree tags or donate funds. If you prefer to donate money toward a gift, we will be happy to do the shopping and wrapping for you. Veronica Gatrousis THE BASILIAN + December 2015 9 55 Maxims of the Christian Life Fr.
