ORTHODOX CHURCH
Volume 29 Issue 5

Powered by Pentecost
On May 31st, we celebrate Pentecost, a great and very important feastday of the Church. Pentecost is the day that
the followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit. Why is receiving the Holy Spirit such a big deal? Christ Himself told
His disciples, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I
depart, I will send Him to you.” (John 16:7). Who is this Helper that Jesus is referring to? The Helper is none other
than the Holy Spirit as we learn when Jesus says the following—“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in My name” (John 14:26).
Why was it so important to receive the Holy Spirit? What could the Holy Spirit do for the disciples that Jesus could not?
For starters, it was the Holy Spirit who would help the disciples fully understand what Christ was trying to teach them.
Believe it or not, Christ wasn’t always able to “get through” to the disciples. For example, they thought that Jesus was
going to be a worldly success—they didn’t realize that He would suffer and die, even though He told them about this on
various occasions. The Holy Spirit on the other hand, Christ tells us, would be able to “get through” to the disciples: “The
Holy Spirit…He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”. (John 14:26). “When
He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;” (John 16:13). Not only would the Holy Spirit remind the
disciples what Jesus taught them, but He would help them understand what Jesus’ teachings meant. This is also true for
us as Orthodox Christians today—unless we have the Holy Spirit, we cannot truly understand the teachings of our Church.
Without the Holy Spirit, we would also not be able to pray properly. “For we do not know what we should pray for as we
ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us….” (Romans 8:26). Without the Holy Spirit we would not have the
courage to follow Christ’s commandments and confess Him to others—“But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do
not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not
you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.” (Mark 13:11). Without the Holy Spirit, we wouldn’t even have the ability to believe in
Christ—“ Therefore I make known to you that…no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Cor. 12:3).
As is clear from Scripture, without the Holy Spirit, there is no chance for salvation. Therefore, how do we obtain the Holy
Spirit? We personally received the Holy Spirit at our Chrismation, which is our own personal Pentecost. However, the Holy
Spirit won’t remain with us by virtue of our Chrismation alone. We can remain a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19) by
making ethical and Christ-pleasing daily decisions or we can “quench the Spirit.” (1 Thess. 5:19) and “grieve the Holy Spirit
of God” (Ephesians 4:30) by making daily decisions contrary to Christ’s teachings.
Along with Chrismation and living an ethical and Christ-pleasing life, it is through attending the Divine Liturgy that we
continue to receive the Holy Spirit. Every Divine Liturgy the priest says, “That our loving God…may in return send upon
us…the gift of the Holy Spirit.” If we recall, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples when they were together praying!
(Acts 2:1-4). “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 4:31).
May the Holy Spirit always guide us, strengthen us and be with us, not only on Pentecost, but all the days of our lives.
In Christ,
Fr. Panagiotis

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Xristos Anesti! Christ is Risen!
Our holy journey through Lent has focused our spiritual life on Christ’s resurrection with its promise
of hope and eternal life. But the gospel of St. Matthew that we heard on Holy Saturday reminds us that
Pascha is not the end point of our holy journey. The women going to the tomb after the Sabbath were met
by an angel announcing the resurrection and instructing them to “Go quickly now and tell the disciples.”
The angel’s command to the women is also a command for us today—Go and tell others about the
resurrection and what it means. To make Pascha truly meaningful in the world, we who have experienced
the joy of the resurrection of Christ are commanded to spread that message in our community and the
world.
Now our Pascha picnic might not come to mind when we think of sharing the Paschal message. But for
those of us who were there that day, worshipping and celebrating together in the Agape service, then
praying together before enjoying the feast of lamb and tri-tip and a wide assortment of appetizers, side
dishes and desserts all prepared and served by our parishioners, it was indeed a full and joyful day shared
with family and friends on our beautiful church grounds. Many thanks to all the cooks, servers, and
workers who made the event another great success, and to all parishioners who welcomed our guests to
the celebration of this great feast of our Church.

ST. BASIL PRESCHOOL
It is hard to believe we are coming to a close of the traditional school year. At the end of this month, we will be “graduating” 34 four
and five-year-olds, and they will leave throughout the summer for their kindergarten adventures! It is difficult to say goodbye. We
have just shared three of the most important developmental years of a child’s life with them. By this time we know quite a bit about
each student, their families and their pets! In fact, there are times we hear stories that Mom and Dads would blush if they knew they
were repeated . After spending the last 36 months, five days a week together, it is bittersweet to say goodbye. Our staff truly are
secure in knowing we have given each child the tools they need to leave our safe, loving community here at St. Basil and go out in
to the bigger community. Because of the relationships that are created between staff and families, we agree our parents here are as
prepared to meet the challenges of the next couple of years with their child(ren). We give thanks for each and every one of them!
I give thanks to a staff that has been nothing but supportive and professional! I have enjoyed the relationship we share and am
honored to be at the helm of such a great teaching crew! I am thankful for my Preschool Council: Lindsey Economou, Gayle
Maduros, Dessi Ksidakis, Dorothy Henning, Joanna Pappas, Anastasia Cook, George Kaplanis, and Christina Velis. I am eager
to continue this journey with you as we work closely to maintain the quality of education we have always exhibited, always mindful
of our Christ-centered curriculum. Thanks to bookkeeper Phyllis Trachiotis for her support and level head when dealing with the
financial end of this mission.
And last but not least, I give thanks to Father Pete. Father has brought our chapel time with him to a high level. He has taken the
time to make the childrens’ time with him “kid friendly” with his use of props to share Bible stories, creativity and consistency. The
children love their time with Father Pete. I am very impressed that he has taken the time to get to know each child’s name and chat
with them individually. It is heart warming to witness as they all love their Father Pete! And thank you to all of you in our St. Basil
Community who offer prayers and support for this very important ministry. We feel your love!
Have a safe summer! I will look forward to communicating with you all in my September 2015 submission!

Christos Anesti!
Our Palm Sunday Luncheon was a great success due to the loving generosity of Mike and Amber
Tsarnas. He cooked a delicious Talapia with dill sauce, rice pilaf, fresh salad, grilled asparagus, bread, and
apple pie dessert. Yummo! A big 'thanks' to Greg Patterson for lending a hand and assisting Mike in the
kitchen.
'Thank you' and a big hug to Mimi Trucco for leading the ladies and gents who came to decorate
the Epitaphio. It was beautiful! Thank you to all the workers! You did a great job!
Upcoming Events-1. General Meeting May 16th 11:30 in the hall. Lunch will be served. Please set your calendars as this is
an election year. We will be approving and voting on empty Board seats. Topic: Haven of Peace Calendar
of donations and assistance.
2. June 16th- Memorial Luncheon at Patti Frangadakis home. Please RSVP to Patti by June 11th
3. Mother's Day luncheon cancelled for 2015
Thank you to everyone who helped lead me through the last four years as your president. It's been an
honor and privilege.

PHILOPTOCHOS - HAVEN OF PEACE WISH LIST
The Philoptochos Society, in keeping with its philanthropic goals, continues to show loving care in the local
community. Thanks to a $5,000 grant received from the National Philoptochos Society, the St. Basil members presented
a check to the Haven of Peace in 2014. This is a local temporary shelter for women and children in transition from
homelessness, abuse, addition, etc. to a pro-active fruitful life. The money was used for a kitchen remodel project.
Ms. Olga Rodriguez recently attended our meeting to thank us, once again, for this generous gift. At our request,
she gave us a “Wish List” to help further this home’s maintenance and upkeep. We are asking the St. Basil family to make
monthly donations of various items.
We have chosen the month of May to be PAPER PRODUCTS: toilet tissue, toilet tissue, and more toilet tissue –
paper towels, napkins, Kleenex, etc. Please bring these items to the church hall. At the end of May, Lenna Papdimatos and
Bobbe Xenos will deliver them to the Haven of Peace. Each succeeding month – watch THE BASILIAN – we will choose
another commodity for collection and delivery.

MIRACULOUS WEEPING ICON IN MUSLIM HOME
Many years ago a Muslim couple from Turkey came to live in Paris, where they found jobs. Their names are Esat and Sevin
Altindagoglu. In their Paris home, one can always see many guests -- not only from France but from abroad as well. All
come to see an icon which the head of the family calls “a miracle.” The Orthodox icon of the Holy Theotokos of the Byzantine period (began shedding tears.
According to the Altindagoglus, the icon was given to them in 2006 by a Greek monk from Libya. As soon as they received
this icon, they felt its great holiness and an unexplainable atmosphere of peace which has reigned in their home since.
When they moved to Paris, they took this venerated icon with them. When the icon was placed in a separate room in the
new house, it at once started weeping. The news speedily spread not only among Turks but also among Christians. The
icon, “All-holy Virgin,” as the Turkish family called it, soon became an object of veneration and a source of miracles. The
news of the new icon spread literally all over the world and now pilgrims from such countries as Germany and Belgium are
coming to venerate the Mother of God.
Esat Altindagoglu relates that not long ago a young married lady visited them: she could not conceive a child for a long
time, so she grieved very much and her marriage was on the brink of divorce. The woman prayed on her knees before the
icon of the Mother of God for a long time. After a few days, she called the couple in tears and told them that a miracle had
happened – she already was expecting a child!

FAMILY & COMMUNITY NEWS
Jerry Lucas September 12, 1925 - April 1, 2015
Jerry Lucas died peacefully at home on April 1, 2015, with Harriet, his loving wife of
61 years at his side. Jerry was born in Lodi, CA, to James and Evangeline Lucas on
September 12, 1925. He attended Lodi schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943.
Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he joinedhis father in the family shoe repair
business.
He married the love of his life Harriet Hlebakos in 1954. In 1955, they moved to
Stockton. He started his own shoe repair business, Lucas Shoe Shoppe, in 1957. He took
great pride in his craft and expanded his business to include the sale of leather goods.
Jerry retired in 1987, along with his wife who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Traveling with friends and dining out were among Jerry's favorite pleasures. He was also
an avid sports fan and enjoyed following his beloved San Diego Chargers and San
Francisco Giants.
Jerry was a member of St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church. He is survived by his
wife Harriet and loving family in California, including daughter Helen Lucas of Galt; son
James Lucas of San Francisco; grandson Dean Xanttopulos of Sacramento; Leah
Xanttopulos of Stockton; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was
predeceased by his sister Stella Lucas and his brothers Thomas (Cyc) and John.
Private funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at St. Basil Greek
Orthodox Church, with Father Pete Sotiras officiating. Interment followed at Cherokee
Memorial Park, Lodi, CA.
The family requests donations to St. Basil Philoptochos Society and/or the
Gus Xanttopulos Benevolent Fund, St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church, 920
W. March Lane, Stockton, CA 95207.
Memory Eternal!
Had been thinking about cemeteries
for historical purposes when I got
the news of Jerry Lucas' passing.
That was a big blow to my Stockton
memory bank. I cannot remember
not knowing Jerry, the really nice guy
who married my Uncle Jim Hlebakos'
sister Harriet. He was a fixture in our
lives -- especially as a shoe repair guy
par excellence (following in his father
Dimitri's footsteps), who had a shop
at 936 N. Yosemite near the S&G
Market.
And, he was one of the last Stockton
Naousa links of his generation. It's up
to Jim, Helen, Dean and Leah to keep
that fire burning.
