Audi A3 TDI Is a Fine Alternative to
Hybrids

Lately I’ve had a hankering for
a red, diesel station wagon, and
my week spent testing a 2012
Audi A3 2.0 TDI scratched almost every part of that desire.
Unlike most Americans, station
wagons have never gone out of
fashion in my mind. I have never
owned one, but my wife had a 1967
Chevy Nomad in primer gray back
in her youth. That wagon was so
spacious I could transport my dirt
motorcycle in back. Granted I had
to take the spare tire out of its well,
remove the bike’s gas tank, and
drop a handlebar end into the nowvacant wheel well. But it worked.
Now that’s cargo versatility.
I’ve driven a number of new hybrids this year, and while I admire
the ingenuity in these gas/electric
composites, there are a number of
excellent diesel cars available that
also do a very credible job of sipping fuel. So it was with pleasant
surprise that I saw my recent Audi
A3 tester not only wore a coat of
brilliant red paint, but it also had
the excellent Volkswagen group
TDI engine on board.
Prices start at $27,270 for the Premium A3 with the manual transmission, front wheel drive and the
also excellent 2.0-liter gas engine.
This turbocharged four-cylinder
makes a healthy 200-hp and 207
lb-ft of torque in this application.
It is rated at 21-mpg in the city and
30 on the highway. The six-speed
automatic transmission goes by the
name S-Tronic and alters the mileage to 22/28.
Unfortunately, the A3 diesel is
available with neither a manual
transmission nor Audi’s vaunted
Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
But, the TDI engine makes up for
its lowly 140-hp with an amazing
236 lb-ft of torque. This makes the
A3 very peppy once it gets moving. Even with the transmission lever in Sport mode, I was not overly
pleased with how quickly the A3
takes off when you want full acceleration from a stop.
But once you are moving along,
the transmission responds to a stab
of the throttle with a downshift, or
two, and a very satisfying burst
of acceleration. I had occasion to

take the A3 for a weekend getaway
to Cape Cod with my wife so I
racked up just over 800 miles in
my week with this Teutonic tester. I am sorry to report that I did
not achieve the 30-city, 42-mpg
highway rating the EPA suggests.
Instead my mileage was just under
36-mpg for the time. While it included a large amount of highway
cruising, a goodly portion of it was
inching along in traffic and cruising the back roads of Wellfleet.
The A3 is a very competent partner when it comes to back road
fun. It is not a sportscar by any
stretch of the imagination, but it
does handle, brake and accelerate
well enough to provide some fun
when you feel like carving corners.
The inside of the A3 is among
the more dated in the Audi lineup.
It doesn’t look bad, but certain
features don’t quite measure up
to Audi’s newer models interior
bling. I found the trip computer
especially hard to engage, and finally resorted to reading the owner’s manual. I discovered that the
toggle switch on the end of one of
the three stalks was indeed what I
use to move through the various
menus, but it was only functional
when I held the reset button on
the same stalk to enter trip 1 and
2 modes.
On the other hand, the $2,000 Premium Plus package added Xenon
plus headlights with those eyecatching LED daytime running
lights, Bluetooth capability, 17inch alloy wheels, and a few other
items including my favorite, the 3spoke multifunction leather steering wheel. This driver interface
completely satisfied. Its shape, feel
and easily-reached buttons were a
joy. The open sky sunroof added
$1,100, the cold weather package tacked on another $500, and
so with the destination charge of
$875, the total came to $34,725.
While the A3 TDI is a car that
could give its owners years of
driving pleasure, it is a bit pricy
for such a small station wagon.
Behind the tight rear seat is 19.5
cubic feet of cargo space; when
you fold down the split rear seat,
it only increases to 39 cubic feet.
This was the one itch that remained
unscratched. I did not try to put a
motorcycle in the back, but sadly,
my bicycle could not be swallowed
by the A3.
Despite this minor inconvenience
the A3 proved to be a marvelous
traveling companion. If you don’t
want your Audi to have AWD, but
you do like eking out a lot of mpg
from your fuel, take a look at the
A3 TDI.

I am a rural mail carrier and
have a question about engine
coolants. As a mail carrier, I
spend a tremendous amount of
time on hot asphalt at very slow
speeds, and often sitting still. Are
there any engine coolants that
are capable of making an engine
run cooler? My engine runs a
little hotter than I am comfortable with. It doesn’t overheat,
but it reaches higher temps than
it does when traveling down the
road at 55 mph. If no such coolant exists, are there any “tricks”
that could be applied to get the
desired result? -- Josh
TOM: There’s really nothing you
can put in there to make it run
cooler, Josh -- unless you want to
pack the radiator with blocks of
dry ice.
RAY: It’s more likely that your
radiator has seen better days. So
the first thing I’d suggest is having
your radiator inspected and flowtested. Make sure it’s not corroded
and that you’re moving plenty of
coolant through it.
TOM: You can have someone
check your thermostat, too, to
make sure it’s opening correctly
and isn’t sticking. A sticky thermostat can make a car run hot in
stop-and-go driving. So can a nonfunctioning cooling fan.
RAY: If all of that stuff checks
out OK, your one other option is to
install an auxiliary cooling fan.
TOM: Basically, that’s an extra
electric fan that mounts on the
front side of the radiator (your
regular cooling fan is on the back
side). An auxiliary fan will give
you a little extra cooling in stopand-go driving, which is where
you need it.
RAY: But other than that, there’s
no magic potion, Josh. Except
maybe the acid bath they’re going
to use to clean out your corroded
radiator. Good luck.

much alive.
Stewart, 41, is in excellent
position. His victory in the Coke
Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway was his third of
the season. He ranks fifth in the
points standings, but once the
Chase begins on Sept. 16, that
ranking won’t matter as long as
Stewart remains in the top 10.
At the beginning of the Chase,
which consists of the season’s final 10 races, bonus points are allotted on the basis of victories. At
the moment, Stewart and Brad
Keselowski are tied with three.
Keselowski’s hold on the top
10 is more tenuous. He ranks
ninth. The three victories will almost surely put him in the Chase,
but if Keselowski has to rely on
one of the two wild-card slots, he
won’t get the bonus points.
In other words, Stewart is
looking great.
“Everybody has a shot to win
these things (meaning restrictorplate races at Daytona) and to
run in the top five when they
get here,” Stewart said. “It’s just
a matter of getting that luck on
your side and being at the right
place at the right time and having that opportunity.”
