become a reality for many in our country. While
we cannot deny the change that has taken place,
there remains much to be accomplished. The US
Catholic Bishops in their 1979 Pastoral Letter on
Racism, Brothers and Sisters to Us state, “But
neither can it be denied that too often what has
happened has only been a covering over, not a
fundamental change. Today the sense of urgency
has yielded to an apparent acceptance of the status
quo. The climate of crisis engendered by
demonstrations, protests, and confrontation has
given way to a mood of indifference, and other
issues occupy our attention.” These words continue
to ring true at this current point in history. Further,
the African American Catholic Bishops reminded
us in their 1984 Pastoral Letter on Evangelization
What We Have Seen and Heard that “the cause of
justice and social concerns are an essential part of
evangelization.” We must never allow other issues
to eclipse our belief in the fundamental human
dignity of each and every person, and our
responsibility to build up and to transform society
in the manner in which the gospel message of
Jesus Christ clearly makes evident to us.
On Wednesday of this week we commemorate the
50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for
Jobs and Freedom. I’d like to share with you the
statement released by U.S Conference of Catholic
Bishops' Committee on Cultural Diversity in the
Church on the occasion of this anniversary.
“As we mark the 50th Anniversary of the March on
Washington for Jobs and Freedom that occurred on
August 28, 1963, we call attention to this
significant event in the history of the struggle for
Civil Rights for African Americans and other
minority racial groups in the United States. Those
who participated in the March on Washington
came from different races and faith denominations,
but were all united for a just cause. Seeking to
touch and to move the heart of America, they came
to the nation’s capital and marched to advance the
cause for Civil Rights, calling for an end to
segregation. They called attention to the economic
disparity that existed for African Americans and
other minorities in this country. St. Paul in Sacred
Scripture declares, “How beautiful are the feet of
those who bring the good news!” (Romans 10:15),
and the participants marched on foot and
proclaimed the good news of our God who acts in
favor of the marginalized in our country; they
called upon the nation to enact legislation that
would benefit those suffering and forgotten. Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous ‘I
Have A Dream’ speech, which redirected the moral
compass of the nation toward concern for the cause
of justice. Even today his words continue to inspire
us. Joining Dr. King at the March on Washington
were other religious, civic and community leaders,
among them Cardinal Patrick O’Boyle, Archbishop
of Washington, who delivered the invocation, and
many Roman Catholic priests, religious sisters and
brothers and lay faithful.
Marking this 50th Anniversary of the March on
Washington for Jobs and Freedom, we join our
voices to those who call for and foster continued
dialogue and non-violence among people of
different races and cultures, and who work
tirelessly for the transformative, constructive
actions that are always the fruit of such authentic
dialogue. We rejoice in the advances that have
occurred over the past 50 years, and sadly
acknowledge that much today remains to be
accomplished. However, we must always view the
task that remains from the perspective of the
continued call to hope and in the light of faith. Dr.
King once stated, “We must accept finite
disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
Those who participated 50 years ago in the March
on Washington rooted themselves in infinite hope.
Pope Francis wrote in Lumen Fidei, “Faith teaches
us to see that every man and woman represents a
blessing for me, that the light of God’s face shines
on me through the faces of my brothers and
sisters.” We also must join with one another rooted
in infinite hope and, in light of what faith teaches,
work to advance and fulfill the dream. We join the
call for positive action that seeks to end poverty,
increase jobs, eliminate racial and class inequality,
ensure voting rights, and that provides fair and just
opportunities for all.”
Fifty years later, we cannot deny the wide spectrum
of advancement in many realms of society. We
laud the fact that in our country there is more racial
and cultural diversity among the leadership in both
the public and private sectors. Many more doors of
opportunity are open and certain legal remedies are
in place. These benefits have allowed members of
minority racial groups in our country to advance,
and to offer more fully the benefits of their gifts
and talents in efforts to work toward the common
good for all in our country. The March on
Washington and the struggle for Civil Rights have
brought about significant accomplishments in the
past 50 years.
God Bless,
Fr. Gary Lazzeroni
However, the Dream of Dr. King and all who
marched and worked with him has not yet fully

Response: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a
wonderful, peaceful, meditative prayer time when one
can simply be present with our Lord. For a long time,
Adoration was available from after the 8 AM Mass on
Thursday morning until the beginning of daily Mass at
8 AM on Friday morning. When the Blessed Sacrament
is exposed, it is imperative that Jesus never be left
alone! Unfortunately, it was challenging to fill all of the
24 hours of Adoration with at least two adorers each
hour. Therefore, the hours had to be cut back.
Adoration is now available from after the 8 AM Mass on
Thursday until 9 PM on Thursday evening. For more
information or to sign up, e-mail Barbara at

for high school. Both programs have periodic core
team planning meetings. Interested? Please call Teri
McMahon, 360-823-2804.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reflection
“To the question of how this
unhappy situation (of how evil in the world) can
be overcome, Christians reply that all these
human activities, which are daily endangered by
pride and inordinate self- love, must be perfected
by the cross and resurrection of Christ. Redeemed
by Christ and made a new creature by the Holy
Spirit, man can, indeed he must, love the things of
God’s creation: it is from God that he has
received them, and it is as flowing from God’s
hand that he looks upon them and reveres them.
Man thanks his divine benefactor for all these
things, he uses them and enjoys them in a spirit of
poverty and freedom: thus he is brought to a true
possession of the world, as having nothing yet
possessing everything: “All (things) are yours;
and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.”
1 Cor, 2:22-23. (Gaudium et Spes #37)

Prayer
Lord, God of heaven and earth, the gift of life that
you have shared with us is sustained and nurtured
by the world in which we live. Help us to cherish
your world and its goods. Purify us, O Lord, of
the greed and selfishness that anxiously drive us
to acquire that which we do not really need. Help
us so that we do not use or deplete unnecessarily
that which others may need or require to
survive. Teach us, O Lord, that we are valued for
who we are in your sight and not for what we
have. Bless us with a generous spirit and a
servant’s heart. May you be praised by how we
treat the earth and one another. We ask this in
your holy name. Amen.
"The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the
principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council".
These opening words of the Vatican II Decree on
Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio, make clear beyond
all doubt the Catholic Church's commitment to ecumenism,
to the quest for Christian unity. Join us as we take a deeper look
at the implications of the Catholic Church's understanding
of itself and its relationship with other Churches.

Parish Tithing
Above is the Offertory received so far this fiscal
year (July-June). The actual year-to-date amount
received figure has been revised and will now
include donations received each week after this
report is generated for the bulletin.
While remaining fiscally responsible to those within
our parish, a portion of the annual offertory is
distributed each year to other organizations who
assist the many in need throughout our community. It
is the hope of parish leadership that the sharing of
our first fruit will inspire all who worship here to
embrace the practice of returning to God a portion of
what He has so generously given to us - each
according to their means.
Thank you for your faithful stewardship and for
sharing with us a portion of the financial gifts God
has given you! If you have any questions, please
contact Carrie Moschetti, Pastoral Assistant for
Administration, 360-823-2845 or [email protected].
Here are some of the responses we have received:
Couponing Ministry
The couponing ministry gathers on Monday
mornings from 8:45 - 10AM in the St. Dominic
Room in the parish hall to sort donated coupon
inserts, clip expired coupons for our military
overseas, discuss procurement opportunities for
groceries and other needed items by the parish or for
donation to St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you, thank
you, thank you to all parishioners who share their
coupon inserts (i.e. SmartSource, RedPlum, P&G,
General Mills, etc). There is a drop-off basket
located in the north hallway of the church as you
enter from the NW door on the right. We will be
taking a break on Monday, September 2nd for Labor
Day.

car hoods.
Do not use your cell phone in the parking lot.
Please be patient and mindful that the children’s safety is
worth a few extra moments behind the wheel.
