Divan Messages
Nobles
Summer is over, and it’s back to business for El Kalah
Shriners. We have had a very good year so far. We have
already accomplished much of what we set out to do.
We are, however, falling short in one vital area. That is
MEMBERSHIP. We have four months to go, so there is plenty of time to
talk to your lodge brothers and friends about all the great things that being
a Shriner means to you, and how it will benefit them.
The annual Ceremonial is scheduled for Oct 31. We should have 30 new
nobles to initiate that day. We are far short of that right now. This is the
responsibility and opportunity for all Shriners to help our organization
grow. Get with your lodge brothers. Invite them to the Hospital for a
tour. The hospital is a very powerful sales tool to bring in new members.
Use it.
We have another Shriner Awareness Night planned for November 6th.
This will also be a “must do” event for you and your prospects. We have
a fine presentation prepared and there will be an excellent dinner for you
and our guests.
Please, do all you can in the pursuit of this most important task.
Fraternally

HOT SANDS OCT 31
Dear Brother Nobles;
I would like to share some thoughts sent to me today. I think
they are appropriate for all of us to consider.
Good friends are like quilts- they age with you, yet never lose
their warmth.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon;
before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read, or play on the computer until 4 AM, or
sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50s, 60s & 70s, and if I, at
the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will
dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from
the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well
forgotten. And, eventually, I remember the important things.
Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break,
when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s
beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength, and
understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and
will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to
have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many
have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people
think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person
I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not
waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be.
And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).
MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S
STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART!
Chuck Warren

We had a great time Klownin’ around with all the sweet cars at the Kruizer’s for Kids. Thanks to all who
came and supported Karen.
We will see you all at the Peach Day Parade, don’t be surprised if you get a pie thrown at you, we won’t tell
who did it.
And we will conduct our next business meeting (like us Klown’s know how to do that) on Sept 27th at 2
PM at Spinner’s.
Keep Smilin’ (takes less muscles to do that than frown)

A Note from Kevin Martin, Administrator
I am pleased to report that our inaugural Walk for Love was a tremendous
success. Hopefully this is the first of many in the years to come. This is the
first time the hospital has put on our own fund raiser, so we weren’t sure
what to expect. All were very pleasantly surprised. Money raised was in
excess of $25,000. We had 752 walkers, 1,000 people attended Summer
Fest, more than 100 volunteers from such groups as Select Health, the
US Marines, DeMoley, Jobies, U of U Football, the Salt Lake Men’s choir
and more. More than 100 past and present patients attended with one
going back more than 50 years. There were 850 hot dogs served and more
than1,000 brownies and cookies along with Fezzy’s Rescue Squad which
gave more than 500 stuffed animal wellness check-ups.
State Representative Rebecca Chavez-Houck attended the event and was
very complimentary. The walk was kicked-off by our own Dave Draper,
Shauna Larson and Ken Kozole holding a banner announcing our #10
ranking in US News and World Report. The 1.5 mile walk started at the
hospital, went down 11th Avenue to the fire station and back. We also had
great support from the El Kalah Shriners.
Apropos for our target audience—our patients, many special characters
were in attendance including our national Love to the Rescue Ambassador,
Fezzy, Anna and Elsa, Snow White, Belle, Batman, Darth Vader and
Captain America, jr. The real heroes were those of our staff who really
made this happen. Many worked behind the scenes to make it a success.
This is what makes our hospital great!
