SOCIAL PROGRAM Concepción, July 2014 CONCEPCIÓN CITY TOUR Date: Meeting Point: Duration: Cost: Saturday 05th - 12:00 hrs to be confirmed About 4 hours FREE It was founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1550 north of the Bío Bío River, at the site which is today known as Penco. At that time it was given the name Concepción del Nuevo Extremo. More than once the city has been destroyed by earthquakes and tsunamis. One in 1570, another on the 25 May 1751, at which point it was decided to move Concepción further from the sea to its present location in the Mocha Valley. Today, with a population of over 900,000, Concepción is the second largest city of the country. EL CHIFLÓN DEL DIABLO Date: Meeting Point: Duration: Cost: Sunday 06th - 12:00 hrs to be confirmed About 2 hours $4.000 CLP (fee) + 1.000 CLP (round trip) El Chiflón del Diablo or The Devil's Blast (in reference to the natural draft that flows through the mine) is a mine located in Lota, 1 hour away from Concepción. After coal production fell in the Lota area in the 1990s, the mine was shut down. Currently, El Chiflón del Diablo serves as tourist attraction. Santiago de Chile is a beautiful city founded on 1541, which nowadays is a mix of old and modern architecture, that varies along with its neighborhoods, buildings, parks, museums and monuments. We will take a tour around the main sights of the historic center of Santiago de Chile. Please bring comfortable shoes because we are going to do a lot of walking. Mains stops will be: Downtown, Lunch at “Mercado Central”, visiting “La Chascona” house and going up the “San Cristóbal hill”. Please bring along your Student ID. CONCHA Y TORO VINEYARD Date: Meeting Point: Duration: Cost: Sunday 13th - 13:00 hrs “Las Mercedes” Metro station (Line 4, blue), at the ticket counter Just for the day 1.200 CLP (round trip) + $8.600 CLP (entrance fee) This is one of the most traditional Chilean Wineries, known worldwide for the outstanding quality of its wines. The tour will begin with a guided visit to the gardens of the house where the Concha y Toro family lived for many generations. Afterwards we will visit the vine plantations and the cellar where the famous “Casillero del Diablo” legend rumor began, widely spread by Mr. Melchor, to prevent his best wines from being stolen. Finally, we shall do a tasting of two of their best wine strains and then visit the vineyard’s shop, where you can purchase souvenirs and other wine related goods. LA PARVA SKI CENTER Date: Friday 18th – 07:30 hrs Meeting point: “Ski Total” Store. Apoquindo #4900, Las Condes. This is 3 blocks away from “Escuela Militar” Metro station (line 1, red) Duration: All day long Cost: 20.000 CLP (round trip Concepción-Santiago) + 55.000 CLP (transport + lift ticket + lunch + equipment rental + Ski/Snowboard classes) Chile's central and southern regions are home to a wide variety of ski centers which receive thousands of visitors each season (between June and October). You can go skiing or snowboarding for the day at one of the ski centers just outside Santiago de Chile. You may practice ski or snowboard. We advice you to check out www.skitotal.cl, to find some proper ski clothes (pants & jacket), gloves, goggles and helmet (not included in the price). VALPARAÍSO & VIÑA DEL MAR CITY TOUR Date: Meeting point: Duration: Cost: Friday 18th – 20:00 hrs “Pajaritos” Metro station (line 1, red), at the ticket office Weekend! (Including Saturday and Sunday) 8.000 CLP (bus ticket - round trip) + 18.000 CLP (accommodation with breakfast included) - Hostal Kalagen (kalagenhostel.com) + 1.500 CLP (“La Sebastiana”) This one is a classic tour of IFMSA-Chile. During this tour w e do city tour, go to the beach, visit Pablo´s Neruda House "La Sebastiana", famous flower clock and other touristic p laces of Valparaiso y Viña del Mar. MONITOR HUÁSCAR Date: Meeting Point: Duration: Cost: Saturday 26th - 12:00 hrs to be confirmed Weekend 1.000 CLP (round trip) + 1.500 CLP (fee) Huáscar is a 19th-century small armored turret ship of a type similar to a monitor. She was built in Britain for Perú and played a significant role in the battle of Pacocha and the War of the Pacific against Chile before being captured and commissioned with the Chilean Navy. Today she is one of the few surviving ships of her type. The ship has been restored and is currently commissioned as a memorial ship. She is named after the 16th century Inca emperor, Huáscar. CALETA LENGA Date: Meeting Point: Duration: Cost: Sunday 27th - 12:00 hrs to be confirmed Weekend 1.000 CLP (round trip) + 3.000 CLP (empanada) Caleta Lenga is a Chilean touristic beach placed at the north coast of the San Vicente bay and it’s part of Hualpén. Nowadays is a gastronomic pole, when you may find over 20 restaurants. It beach of gray sands, it is perfect for practicing sports like windsurf or others.
