Vicki Bellino’s No-Fraying Appliqué Tutorial
STEP 1
Trace the template of your appliqué shape onto a sheet
of freezer paper and cut out.
STEP 2
Iron the paper template (wax side down) onto the
right side of your chosen fabric
STEP 3
Cut the fabric around the paper template, so that
the fabric is about 1/8 of an inch larger all the way
around.
STEP 4
We asked Vicki to share her secret for perfect looking appliqué when she visited the Connecting Threads
office. By using freezer paper and folded fabric edges, Vicki’s technique makes for worry-free appliqué,
as there are no raw edges of fabric to fray when sewing. Vicki uses her sewing machine, but you could
also use this technique for hand appliqué if you prefer.
Peel the paper off of the
fabric, flip it over, and
center it on the wrong side
of your fabric shape (wax
side facing up).
STEP 5
Using a mini iron, iron the edge of the fabric over the paper template as shown.
STEP 5 (continued)
Your shape should now look similar to the one on the
right, with the fabric edge ironed neatly around the edge
of the paper template.
STEP 6
Using fabric glue, glue
small dots around the
inside edge of the back of
the shape and press gently
in position onto your quilt
block.
STEP 8
STEP 7
Choose your desired appliqué stitch setting on your sewing machine, and sew around
the edge of the shape. Vicki uses the stitch shown on her Bernina Activa 230, a 60-8 size
needle and clear, lightweight nylon thread when she appliqués for nearly invisible results.
Being careful not to
puncture the front of your
block, insert pointy scissors
into the wrong side of the
block behind the appliquéd
shape (1/8” inside the
stitching), cut out the fabric
and remove the paper.
Your block should now
look as shown on the right.
Congratulations--you’ve got
a block with appliqué that
won’t fray!
