The Marching Chiefs consists of approximately 400
young men and women from virtually every discipline and
major available at the Florida State University. In addition
to providing halftime pageantry for Seminole home
football games, they regularly travel to away games and an
annual post season bowl game. The Chiefs are also
featured each fall as part of the exciting Tri-State Festival
PRISM Concerts.
In 2008, we presented perhaps the widest variety of
musical styles in our storied history. We kicked off the
season with music from the popular video game
series, Guitar Hero, including the hits Barracuda and
Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Our annual military
appreciation day consisted of numerous traditional
patriotic selections opening with a sizzling
arrangement of Robert Jager’s classic band composition,
Esprit de Corps (from which we borrow the title of this
collection). The Marching Chiefs then reminded all
opponents that Doak Campbell stadium is indeed Our
House with a show dedicated to the Hits of the 80’s. The
supergroup Boston was highlighted in a Smokin’ show
featuring Peace of Mind and More than a Feeling while our
2008 Homecoming paid tribute to legendary American
composer, Leonard Bernstein. Our season finale featured
Strawberry Soup, a popular and stirring Marching Chiefs
classic capping another successful season of marching,
music, and most of all, Esprit de Corps!
This recording also includes three original jazz
compositions written specifically for the Marching Chiefs
by Dr. Patrick Dunnigan, Director of Bands and member of
the FSU faculty since 1991. These selections include: You’ve
Got Spunk, a swinging opener in the tradition of the great
Count Basie; J-Town Blues, a down-home blues tune
named after Dr. Dunnigan’s first band in Jeffersontown,
Kentucky; and La Danza del Fuego (Fire Dance) created in
the style of the Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson big
bands. Dunnigan writes “it was my intention to showcase
the incredible talents of the Marching Chiefs in a variety of
jazz styles that have been an important part of my musical
life for many, many years.” We hope you enjoy these world
premier recordings.
