Message From The President
L.U.H.S.D. Athletic Hall of Fame
We are inducting six individuals and a team tonight. The Board of Directors feel that these
inductees represent truly outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the L.U.H.S.D. athletic
history. I agree wholeheartedly.
As we celebrate the Seventeenth Annual L.U.H.S.D. Induction dinner, we salute the outstanding group of people being honored tonight for their successes in athletics and in life and for their
positive contributions to their communities. They are all successful citizens—the same work
ethic, determination, pride and dedication that made them successful athletes continues to play an
important part in their present lives.
I congratulate all of the inductees on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame.
They are certainly worthy and deserve the honor being bestowed on them tonight.
Our inductees are on permanent display in the main hallway of Independence High School.
Please make an effort to come by and visit the display — it is truly a trip down memory lane.
The Athletic Hall of Fame is deeply indebted to the L.U.H.S.D. administration and the Board of
Trustees for making this a reality.
I would like to thank all of you in attendance tonight because your presence is crucial to our
success. I would also like to thank all of those benefactors who have given personal contributions
or have purchased advertising space in our Induction Dinner Program. As you know, an undertaking such as the Athletic Hall of Fame is certainly not without considerable expense. Without the
financial support of you fine, caring individuals and businesses, the Hall of Fame could not and
would not survive. Thank you all for making the Hall of Fame a success.
Besides the efforts of community members, the success of the Hall of Fame is the result of
the hard and tireless efforts of nineteen dedicated board members whose only goal is to make the
L.U.H.S.D. Hall of Fame the best it can be. As President, I want to thank each and every one of
them for their efforts to make the Hall of Fame a success and to guarantee that it continues as a
repository of our district’s rich athletic tradition and history.
Sincerely,
Jack Ferrill
President

Athlete / Soccer – Track - Volleyball
Sarah attended Liberty High School from 1997 to 2001.
In those four years she left an indelible footprint on the athletic
history of Liberty – especially in soccer and track and field. She
was an outstanding young athlete when she arrived at Liberty, and
she continued to grow and improve with each passing year. In her
freshman year, she played freshman volleyball and was a North
Coast Section Scholar Athlete. On the varsity soccer team she
lettered and was honorable mention All-BVAL. She led Liberty
with 14 goals, 7 assists, and 35 points. She was 9th in BVAL scoring with 26 points and was chosen by the Contra Costa Times as a
“Fabulous Freshman.” She again was a N.C.S. Scholar Athlete. As
a freshman, she also earned her varsity letter in track and field. She
was a N.C.S. qualifier – 4th in the long jump with a 16’2” leap. At
the N.C.S. Tri-Valley Meet, she again qualified 4th with a jump of
16’5” and at the Meet of Champions, she was 7th with a jump of
16’6 ¾”. She was Honorable Mention All-BVAL in the long jump.
She was again a N.C.S. Scholar Athlete. In her sophomore year,
she played and lettered in JV volleyball. She won the MVP award
and was the Ledger Dispatch “Star of the Week” and one of the
“Big Shots.” Again she was a N.C.S. Scholar Athlete. She lettered
again in varsity soccer and was the leading scorer on Liberty’s team
with 10 goals, 9 assists for a total of 29 points. She was selected as
First Team All-BVAL and the Contra Costa Times chose her to the
Third Team All-County. Again, she was a N.C.S. Scholar Athlete.
On the varsity track team, she was second in the BVAL with a long
jump of 15’ 8 ¾” and third in the pole vault with a vault of 8’. At
the N.C.S. Tri-Valley Meet, she was second with a long jump of
16’7” and, at the Meet of Champions, she was eighth with a long
jump of 16’2”. She was listed as the Bay Area Track Leaders as
fifth in the long jump. She was Second Team All-BVAL in both the
long jump and the pole vault. She won the Liberty High Coaches
Award and was again a N.C.S. Scholar Athlete. Sarah’s junior year
began like all the others with her leading a soccer team that made
its first N.C.S. appearance for Liberty. Sarah was Liberty’s leading
scorer and fourth in the BVAL. She was the team Co-Captain and
the Most Valuable Player. She was also selected First-Team AllBVAL and Second Team All-County by the Contra Costa Times.
She was the Brentwood Press and the Contra Costa Times “Athlete
of the Week.” In track she took the BVAL meet in the pole vault
with a vault of 9’6”, which tied the meet record. She was third in
the long jump with a 16’7 ¾” effort and third in the 300 hurdles
with a time of 48.67. At the N.C.S. Tri-Valley meet, she was fourth
in the pole vault at 9’6” and at the N.C.S. Meet of Champions she
was third in the pole vault at 9’6”. She qualified for the C.I.F. Track
and Field Meet and vaulted to the new school record of 10’2”. For
her efforts, she was First-Team All-BVAL in the pole vault and
honorable mention in the long jump and the 300-meter hurdles.
She was a Ledger-Dispatch “Top 10 Lions” in soccer and track and
in the Contra Costa Times “Top 10 Prep Athletes.” In her senior
year, Sarah was the leading scorer on the Liberty soccer team and
in the BVAL. She was the team M.V.P. and the Co-Captain, and she
won the Tonja Smith Coaches Award. She was named First Team
All-BVAL and First Team All-County by the Contra Costa Times.
She was the Brentwood Press “Prep of the Week,” the CC Times
“Standout Athlete of the Week,” the San Francisco Chronicle High
School “All Power Bar Team.” Her individual scoring at Liberty was
24 goals, 12 assists, and 60 points in a season, which are a school
record. In her senior track season, Sarah took second place in the
“Bay Area Top 8 Meet” with a pole vault of 10’6”. At the Oakland
Invitational Meet, she placed second with the same height. She took
first in the BVAL Championships and in the N.C.S. Tri-Valley Meet
in the long jump and pole vault. She qualified for the State Meet
with a fourth place in the long jump and first place in the pole vault
at the M.O.C. At the State meet, she placed eleventh in both the
long jump and the pole vault with a 18’3 ¾” long jump and a 11’2”
pole vault - both marks still stand as Liberty records. She was First
Team All-BVAL in both events. Sarah was the Liberty Girls’ Track
Team MVP. Sara was selected by the Contra Costa Times as a “Top
100 Prep Athlete” for the second time and by CC Times as one of
“Top 5 Female Athletes.” She finished her high school career by
being named the Brentwood Lions Club Scholar Athlete and being
named as the “Female Yearbook Athlete of the Year.” Her awards
were eight varsity letters; four BVAL All-League Awards for soccer
and eight All-League awards for track and field.
Sarah went on to Saint Mary’s College in Moraga on a
soccer scholarship where she had a stellar four-year career playing
soccer. She played in 72 collegiate games and started in 60 of those
games. Her collegiate career scoring was 14 goals and 6 assists
for 34 points. During her collegiate time and after graduating, she
played women’s premier soccer for “East Bay Power” and “L.A.
Ajax.” Sarah graduated from Saint Mary’s College in 2005 with a
B.A. Degree in Health and Medicine with honors.
Sarah lives in Thornton, Colorado, just outside of Denver.
She is presently attending the Regis University Graduate School
of Nursing. She is also playing semi-pro soccer for the Denver
Diamonds.

David Hays
Athlete / Football – Wrestling
David Hays attended Liberty High School from
1995 until 1999. In that four-year span, one of Liberty’s
finest athletes was developed. David became an outstanding two-sport athlete in football and wrestling. He also had
excellent scholarship, citizenship, and student involvement
during his high school career. He was a coach’s dream
come true – big, fast, strong and intense with a determinedto-win attitude. His high school football coach, Nick Frost,
stated it best when he said about David’s disposition on the
field, “He’s nasty.” “He goes out on the field and puts it
all on the line. He’s a vocal guy who brings kids together,
because he goes out and plays hard every single down. He
tries to beat you on the defense.” David earned his varsity
letter as a sophomore and was All-Bay Valley Athletic
League Honorable Mention as a sophomore. In his junior
year, he was named All-BVAL on offense and honorable
mention on defense. As a senior, David earned first team
San Francisco All-Bay Area Honors as named by the San
Francisco Examiner. He was also an All-East Bay Football
First Team Selection by the Alameda Newspaper Group.
He was also named to the All-Contra Costa County Team

overall prospect in the East Bay by the Contra Costa Times.
He was a second team All-State selection and was rated as
the No. 20 offensive line prospect in the West by the Prep
Star All-America Magazine. He earned Super Prep All-Far
West with a rating of No. 122 as an overall prospect in the
region. He earned Bay Valley Athletic All-League honors
as both a junior and senior. At a prep combine before his
senior year, he was timed at 5.06 in the 40, had 32 reps of
185 pounds in the bench press, and he had a superior 4.46
clocking in the pro shuttle drill. He had an amazing 85
“pancake” blocks in his senior season after recording 30
as a junior. David was also a North Coast Section Scholar

his senior year, David was selected to play in Shrine Football Game – California versus Texas on June 26, 1999. He

career at Liberty, David was chosen as the Liberty High
School Male Athlete of the Year in 1999.
Upon graduation from Liberty, David was offered
and accepted a football scholarship to the University of
California in Berkeley. He had a four-year football career
at California after red-shirting his frosh season. He was
a three-year letter winner and a two-year starter. David
helped the Golden Bears to the 2003 Insight Bowl where
they defeated Virginia Tech 52-49. The Bears had an 8-6
record overall and a 5-3 PAC-10 mark with a victory over
Co-National Champion U.S.C. and a 28-16 victory over
Stanford to bring home “The Axe.”

He earned his varsity letter as a freshman but chose not to
wrestle as a sophomore even though he had taken first place
in the Western Regional Championships while wrestling
for Delta Wrestling Club in 1996 at the end of this freshman year. He returned to wrestling as a junior and went
on to place second in the Bay Valley Athletic League. In
his senior year, David placed first in the BVAL and went
on to place second in the North Coast Section. David was
also a North Coast Section Scholar-Athlete in wrestling in
