For example, the use of aluminium in vehicles reduces dead-weight and energy consumption whle increasing load capacity. Strength The aluminium possesses good stress resistance, with tensile strength ranging from 70 up to 700 MPa depending on the alloy and the manufacturing method. By using extruded profiles of appropriate alloy and with the correct cross-section, a strength comparable to that of steel structures can be achieved. Modulus of elasticity The modulus of elasticity (Young’s Modulus) of aluminium is three times smaller than that of steel (E=70 GPa), which means that the moment of inertia of the aluminium profiles should be three times greater in order to achieve the same deflection as that of a steel profile. 6 Forming Aluminium has a good formability - a feature, which is completely utilized in the extrusion process. Aluminium can be cast, drawn and routed. Machining Aluminium is very easy to machine. Ordinary tools (saws and drills) can be used for that purpose. Aluminium can be formed both in heated and cold state. Joining Aluminium parts can be joined by all common methods, such as welding, brazing, adhesive bonding and riveting. Corrosion resistance Aluminium naturally generates a protective oxide coating and is highly corrosion resistant. Different types of surface treatment such as anodizing, painting, or lacquering can further improve this property. It is particularly useful for applications where protection and conservation are required.. This layer can be further strengthened by surface treatment such as anodizing or electrostatic powder coating. The aluminium possesses a unique combination of properties which make it extremely attractive and versatile construction material with universal application. Conductivity Aluminium is an excellent heat and electricity conductor and in relation to its weight is almost twice as good a conductor as copper. This has made aluminium the most commonly used material in major power transmission lines. Linear expansion Aluminium has a relatively high coefficient of linear expansion compared to other metals. This should be taken into account during the design stage in order to avoid possible differences. Non-toxicity Aluminium is non-toxic and is therefore highly suitable for the preparation and storage of food. Reflectivity Aluminium possesses good reflective properties for both light and heat. 7 Design of aluminium profiles Aluminium is the material that gives almost unlimited possibility to design different forms of profiles. To increase the extrudability, functionality and productivity of the profiles it is necessary to follow some some basic design rules: Wall thicknesses The decrease of the wall thicknesses cannot be unlimited. It depends on the profile’s shape and the circumscribing circle. It depends on the profile’s shape and the circumscribing circle. All edges should be rounded at least R0.5. Symmetry The symmetry of the profile is recommended for good extrusion balance of the die. Simplifying the shape and reducing the number of holes Simple shapes with less holes are recommended to be extruded. The solid profiles are with higher productivity. Decorative lines By using decorative lines, the defects, scratches and extrusion lines could be hidden. Deep channels of profiles: Basic rules a/b≤3 Profiles with deep channels S/(b)2≤3 Channel in complex shape The ratios between a and b vary and depend on the wall thicknesses and circumscribing circle. After extrusion the unnecessary part is removed to achieve customer’s configuration. Heat sinks How to make a profile with deep channels easy to be extruded is shown on the picture below. The depth of the channels is decreased but the profile’s area is increased by using wavy forms of the fins. 9 10 11 Production Extrusion With two production facilities, in Athens, Greece, and Sofia, Bulgaria, ETEM guarantees continuous and uninterrupted delivery to all its customers. WORKING STANDARDS IN ETEM Our production plants are equipped with 5 modern extrusion presses with capacity ranging from 1,500 tones to 3,000 tones for a total annual capacity of over 40 000 tones, producing a wide range of standard aluminium profiles with more than 900 different cross-profiles in the following groups: L-profiles; flat bar profiles; round, rectangular and square tubes; T-profiles; U-profiles. The modern equipment allows us to produce high-tech custom profiles, precisely matching the client’s drawings. EN 573 Aluminium and aluminium alloys. Extruded rod/bar, tube and profiles; EN 12020 Aluminium and aluminium alloys. Extruded precision profiles in alloys EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063; DIN 17611 Anodized products from aluminium and aluminium alloys; EN 22768 General tolerances. This treatment provides the alloys with medium to high strength, a good corrosion resistance even when used close to the sea, and also allows the use of welding processes. A large part of the extruded elements for load-bearing structures possess these properties. They are used for load-bearing structures both on land and in the sea. EN AW–6060 ISO AlMgSi Applications Architectural elements for windows, doors, partition walls. Interior furnishing, lighting, stairs, grilles, meshes. Cooling and heating surfaces, electronic modules, electro motor housings. Flexible mounting systems, special machinery parts. Floors of trucks and trailers, pneumatic equipment, railways, internal applications. Irrigation, heating and cooling pipelines, office furniture. Characteristic properties Very good corrosion resistance. Good welding properties. Appropriate for cold forming category T4. Medium-strength heat-treated alloy with slightly lower resistance than that of 6005A. Medium to strong material fatigue. Commonly used alloy for highly-complex cross-profiles. Standardized quality of decorative anodizing. ISO AISiMg(A) Applications Rail transport and flat bar profile systems with complex cross-profiles (integrated structures). Structured building projects, pylons, platforms, pipelines. Applications in the electrical and precision mechanical industry. Extruded forms for different purposes, when the required strength is higher than that of 6060 and 6063. Masts of sailboats. Furniture. Characteristic properties Very good corrosion resistance. Good weldability. Medium to strong heat-treated alloy with strength slightly exceeding that of 6060 and 6063. High material strength. Better extrusion properties than 6082 and 6061 for complex crossprofiles. EN AW-6082 ISO AISi1MgMn EN AW–6063 ISO AlMg0.7Si Applications Architectural elements for windows, doors, partition walls. Standard decorative elements EN AW–6005A 16 Applications Heavy structures in wagons, frames of heavy load trucks, shipbuilding, bridges, military bridges, wheels, boilers. Machinery: Platforms, flanges for instruments, hydraulic systems, towers and pillars, motor boats. Nuclear technologies. Masts and beams for shipbuilding (especially for river boats). Pipes for scaffolding structures, frames for tents and halls, conductors, probes. Riveting mechanisms: Characteristic properties Very good corrosion resistance. Very good weldability. Easy machine processing. Good formability in cold state in category T4 after stabilizing heat treatment. Heat-treated, medium to high strength construction. Alloy with strength higher than that of 6061. Medium material fatigue. Not suitable for complex cross-profiles. The installation has a capacity of 40 tons per day and allows the processing of profiles with length up to 7000 mm. The line is certified under QUALICOAT and meets all European requirements for quality and environmentally clean production and allows the production of high-quality, long-lasting protective coating of the profiles. In addition to the full range of RAL colours, we also offer wood imitation.
