PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Bruges.
This is the second joint plastic surgery meeting between the British and the
Belgians.
The first one was held in Glasgow in 1992 with the respective Presidents
Bill Reid and Romain Vanwijck, who trained in Canniesburn. The special
relationship of the Belgian President with British Plastic Surgery has
provided the platform for this renewed collaboration.
We have put together a varied program to represent as many aspects of our
specialty as possible. We have joined forces with the Belgian Hand Group on
the third day of the congress. Hand Surgery in Belgium is more and more
becoming a separate specialty.
Bruges combines the setting of a modern city with a Unesco World Heritage
Site. In the Rennaisance, it was called the “Venice of the North” with its
beautiful canals and historic monuments. Bruges is easily accessible for
visitors from abroad and the naval port of Zeebrugge is only a short distance
away. Bruges is also the capital of West-Flanders where, in World War 1,
the frontline was situated, immortalised by John McCrae in his poem “In
Flanders Fields”.
World War 1 was the birthplace of modern plastic surgery, which will be
the theme of our first day of the conference. More British servicemen died
in World War 1 than in any other conflict in history. More than 700,000 died.
Of the 3 battles of Ypres, the second has the sad legacy of being the first
conflict where chemical weapons were used on a large scale. The third
battle, Passchendaele, was the one where trench fighting was particularly
severe, with over 450,000 casualties over an 8 km front in a 4 months period.
2
245,000 British soldiers died or were listed as missing. It is not surprising
that, with such devastation, the need for restoration of aesthetics and
function became of paramount importance for the survivors.
The second day of the congress is dedicated to cosmetic surgery, with
speakers with international reputations, on the special topic of “facelifts”.
In parallel with this, we are delighted to be hosting the “Global Leadership
Forum” in conjunction with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)
and the “ICOBRA” Meeting, which will share information on setting up breast
implants registers.
On Saturday the 27th we will close the meeting with a day of parallel sessions
of hand surgery, in parallel with reconstructive and breast surgery.
We hope that you enjoy our joint meeting and spend time exploring
magnificent Bruges and to visit some of the World War 1 memorials.
Kind regards,
Nigel Mercer
Frans Missotten

BFIRST’s vision is of a world where reconstructive plastic surgeons and
hospital staff in poorer countries, together with teams including nursing and
other related professions, receive training and have the necessary supplies
to be able to perform reconstructive surgery and rehabilitate patients.
BFIRST’s mission is to train surgeons working in some of the poorest
countries in the world. Through reconstructive plastic surgery, we aim to
release some of the world’s most vulnerable children and adults from a state
of poverty caused by a deformity or a disability. Untreated burns frequently
result in severe deformity and disfigurement, and a life of destitution and
marginalisation.
