A Letter from our Club President
February 10, 2015
To the Membership:
As President of The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. I want to share information on
the status of the Club’s attempts to respond to the problem regarding the registration of dogs as Labrador Retrievers with the dilute coat color identified as “silver.”
In 1986 the Club attempted to have AKC deny registration of Labradors identified
with the “silver” coat color. That did not happen after an AKC representative investigating the breeding facilities of the dogs exhibiting the dilute coat color made
the decision to categorize the color as chocolate under the “other” option on the
registration application. Subsequent generations of dogs carrying the dilute gene
remain in breeding programs, many bred to recognized titled dogs.
Scientific evidence has shown us that there is no evidence of a dilute gene in
the coat color background of the Labrador Retriever. Despite the Parent Club’s
multiple attempts to request that the American Kennel Club deny full registration
to dogs exhibiting a dilute coat color, these dogs still remain in the breeding pool
and kennels focusing on dilute coat colors proliferate. At this time, our best option to protect the gene pool for the Labrador Retriever is to encourage the use
of the DNA test to identify carriers of the dilute gene. I want to urge each of you,
especially those with active stud dogs, to have breeding stock tested for the dilute
gene and include the information in your advertising. I am also suggesting that we
add the test to the requirements for an LRC, Inc. Breeders’ Directory listing.
Please share this with your local specialty club members. Comments can be
posted on the Club’s Members Only Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/
groups/LRCinc/.

ANNOUNCEMENT
By LRC Health Committee – Monday, May 12, 2014
VERY EXCITING NEWS — The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has agreed to maintain a database of
Labradors who have been permanently identified (microchip or tattoo) and have been tested for the d gene. Dogs
having the genotype dd will be listed as affected, Dd as carriers of the dilute gene and DD as clear of the dilute
gene. This is great news for us. The LRC, Inc. recommends the test from VetGen Laboratories.

LARGE NUMBER OF LABRADORS
RESCUED IN MIDWEST
O
n November 16th, 2014, L.E.A.R.N. (Labrador Education and Rescue Network: www.labadoption.org)
which covers northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin took
in eleven Labradors. A group from Minnesota called Pets in
Crisis contacted L.E.A.R.N. to assist in re- homing Labradors from a “retiring breeder” who had more likely turned
into a hoarder.
Pets in Crisis said at one point this person had 140 Labs
on his property. L.E.A.R.N. volunteers came together to
help out these Labs who lived outside 24-7 with only some
barrels and small dog houses for shelter and cheap dog
food and bread for food, which the owner would throw out
of the back of his car’s trunk when he went to feed the
dogs. So some did not get much food if any. The area the
dogs were kept in was filled with garbage and excrement.
They were all malnourished and it appears they did not get
much water to drink, as they all drank large amounts of water the first days they were in foster care. There had already
been a foot of snow in that area and temperatures were
hovering around zero or lower at night.
The Labs were transported by Pets in Crisis on a fourhour drive to Sponge Spa Car Washes in Janesville, WI
which had a dog wash attached, and were kind enough to
let the rescuers use their location to transfer and bathe all
of the Labs. All the Labs were dirty and in need of a bath,
nail clipping and ear cleaning on arrival. This was a new situation for all of them, and they were petrified. The volunteers
were surprised by the small sizes of the Labs, seven of the
Labs were one year old and not one was over 30 pounds.
After baths the Labs enjoyed love, cuddles and treats from
the volunteers, except for Goldie who had an open wound
on his side. Two volunteers took him to the animal ER for
x-rays and staples. The cost of this treatment was funded
by LABMED. Two hours later, these 11 dogs headed off to
their warm foster homes where they would begin living
how “man’s best friend” should live, and start learning to
trust humans.
The dogs were all seen at veterinary clinics within a couple of days of rescuing. All needed treatment for worms
and most were positive for Lyme disease, some for anaplasmosis or Ehrlichia, so several needed to be treated with
antibiotics. Another needed surgery for a tumor on her eye
lid and yet another has had to have a neurology consult.
Most have now been spayed or neutered and the rest
will be once their veterinarians deem them healthy enough
to undergo the surgery. The LRC, Inc. rescue fund made a
generous donation to L.E.A.R.N. to assist with the costs of
rescuing these Labs.
On January 11th, 2015, Pets In Crisis made another delivery of 14 more Labs from this hoarding situation to Janes-

ville where more foster homes met up with the transport.
Fortunately this group of dogs is a bit healthier than the
last. Several have been negative for all parasites and Lyme
although others have tested positive for whipworms, lung
worms or Lyme disease. Most have been frightened initially
when taken into their foster homes but they are making
good progress.
Some of the Labs that arrived in November have now
been adopted and others should be ready to be adopted
out soon. Unfortunately there are probably at least 20 more
Labs on the breeder/hoarder’s property. Hopefully with fewer dogs to care for, he will be able to better care for them
but there is still a chance that he will eventually surrender
all or most of them.
Here is an update on one of the Labs who has been
adopted:
“My family has been fostering for LEARN since about
2003 (not sure on exact dates), but my whole life I’ve had at
least one Labrador in the house.
I have loved (bitter-sweetly of course) having all our foster dogs in the house over the years. Each time it was a
new adventure, and every time they got the happiest ever
after that we could have picked for them (or did they pick
their new family? The world will never know).
When we got Reggie (previously called Blincoln) that November evening, I knew that this little guy was going to be
a different story. He was so overstimulated and bombarded
with “newness” that he couldn’t even get out of the car
(not typical lab behavior). I literally carried him into his new
life, wrapped in a towel. I set him down in our family room
and he just stood there and shook. So, I did what seemed
natural. I wrapped him up in that towel again, picked up all
40 pounds of him, and sat him on my lap with a blanket.
I think at that point he started to understand what was
going on. He had a place to be now. A warm home with hu-

mans who were going to love him and feed him. And that’s
what I’m going to give to him for the rest of his life.
I am nearing the end of my undergraduate career and
will be starting graduate school in the fall. Reggie will join
me once I graduate in May and I cannot wait to start my
new life with him by my side.
Thank you to LEARN for allowing me to adopt this wonderful boy. He is the new light in my life. The pictures at-
tached show how much trust this boy has in us humans.
They were taken on November 26th, only a few days after
he started his new life.
PS: If anyone is wondering on the name choice...we’re
diehard Packer fans, so we brainstormed Hall of Famers
and other favorites. Reggie (White) was the name of my
godmother’s beloved sheltie (RIP), and so with her permission, Reggie became his new name for his new life!”

also a co-founder and board member of LABMED.

UPLAND HUNT TEST NOW
AVAILABLE TO RETRIEVERS
by Phyllis Giroux, DVM
W
hile most of us think of Labrador Retrievers a waterfowl dogs, a very high percentage (85% or more) of
the Labradors used in this country and Canada are used as
upland dogs. An upland dog has a different job than a waterfowl dog. It is the upland dog’s job to use his nose, his
instincts and experience to hunt birdy objectives, present
the bird or birds to the hunter, flush the game, and retrieve
the bird after it is shot. The HRC, NAHRA, and the CKC have
incorporated upland hunting and flushing in their testing
program from almost the beginning. As of July 1, 2013, Labrador Retrievers were allowed to participate in AKC Spaniel
flushing tests, providing a titling venue for Labradors to exhibit their flushing prowess in the field on upland game.
Unlike retriever tests, at which all dogs are expected
to perform in a similar manner, each breed participating in
Spaniel Flushing Tests has its own unique hunting style. The
judges are expected to be familiar with the styles for the
different breeds.
An excerpt from the hunting style for the Labrador is
quoted here:
“The Labrador when on game, either by air or ground
scent, will become more excited or animated. As it nears
game it may drop its head somewhat to better find or locate
the bird, but will continue to move forward. Most Labradors
will naturally flush in a bold to moderate manner, their desire
to find and retrieve continuously driving them toward the bird
in an attempt to either catch or flush to wing. Anything less
would be unacceptable and should be scored accordingly.”
It is important to note that these are flushing tests, and
a dog that points is immediately disqualified. These judges
are looking for a dog that “paints the field with his nose,”
and exhibits a “bold flush.”
I went to my first Spaniel Flushing test in August of 2013.
I had worked hard over the summer in anticipation of trying
out my dog against the Spaniel standard, and was coached
by Steve Roth of the Maryland Sporting Dog Club. Steve is
a fully pointed Spaniel Hunt Test judge, and has given generously of his time and knowledge to help newcomers over
the years. It was quite an experience for me. Some people
at the test were quite nice and willing to help. Others clearly felt I was an interloper, and treated me as such.
My biggest issue as a beginner was that I had to set
aside everything I knew as a trainer and handler of Labradors for Retriever Hunt Tests. I have been handling and
training Retrievers for Field Trials and Hunt Tests since 1978,
so that is quite a lot to set aside. No more straight lines. A
much more delicate balance between trained and natural
abilities must be achieved. A dog must honor his nose most
GCH Am/Can/UKC CH Poplar Forest Play it again Sam UD, RE,
MH, MHU (Sam) flushing a pheasant
of the time, but must use his nose, not his eyes to locate
game in the field. He must work the field in a trained and
systematic manner to locate birds. Only after flushing the
birds does the eye come into play for marking the fall.
Most of all, Flushing tests, although they are not “hunting,” are much closer to hunting than retriever tests. Each
run is fraught with potential surprises. Birds, when located,
may or may not flush. If they flush, they may or may not be
shot. If they are shot, they may or not be deemed “retrievable.” Sometimes two birds flush, sometimes more. How
do you or your dog know which bird will be shot?
As in retriever tests and trials, gunners can make or break
a test for the dogs, but even more so in Flushing Tests. One
gunner walks along with you on each of the sides of the
course (which is delineated by tall poles). When your dog
starts to act birdy, the gunner will ready him or herself to
shoot. The gunner will be very careful to make only shots
that are safe and fair for the dog. At Junior and Senior levels, any flushed bird may be chased by the dog, but must be
retrieved if retrievable. At the Master level, the dog should
be steady to flush and shot, you are released by the judges

working a field at a test
by a tap on your shoulder to send your dog. In all the excitement, you might be watching your dog, and have to rely on
the gunners to tell you where the bird is. Usually the gunners are looking in that direction to give you a hint!
One of the best aspects of participating in Spaniel Tests
is that the gallery (spectators) follow along behind the judges and can watch the dogs work. I have found it fascinating
to watch the various breeds of spaniels and the differences
in the way they hunt, cover ground, and react to birds. You
can even volunteer to “shag,” that is, to carry the basket in
which all retrieved birds are carried through the course. A
great spot to see all the action and to hear the judges’ comments and to learn.
Teaching your dog the basics of the pattern that is required for success in the upland portion of the test requires
time and practice. There are many places on the internet
where you can see how spaniels are taught, most using
props such as platforms and poles. Our dogs like to air
scent, so we must work at teaching them to follow the back
and forth pattern that the judges expect to see. While it is
acceptable to guide a Junior dog with whistles and casts to
work this pattern, less direction is acceptable as you go to
Senior and Master levels.
In addition to the work in the field, dogs are required to
do a water retrieve (all levels), a “Hunt Dead,” which is a
kind of blind retrieve (Senior and Master), and a water blind
(Master). The training of skills required for successful completion of these tasks is familiar to most retriever trainers.
I love seeing this aspect of my dogs that is often masked
by the tight control in retriever Tests and Trials.
I have now completed one JHU, three SHU and two
MHU titles on my dogs. I am lucky enough to have trained
and handled the first Labrador Retriever ever to complete
an MHU title. This journey has just begun!
Come and join me.
