We enjoyed many great snacks, Italian cookies, Munchkins, brownies, cupcakes & more. Karlo and his wife even brought some Italian sausage and bread for all to enjoy. Many thanks to all that donated items for the raffle - and to all of those that bought raffle tickets and donated snacks. Congratulations to those who won! A special thanks to Deb Richards that was there to help set up and break down . Our walk was on the camp road that was snow covered, the paths in the woods were too deep with snow for us to navigate. The club raised approximately $250, that will be shared by Berner Inc. and the BMDCNV to help to defray the cost of the camp rental. Thanks again for all that came and shared in the snow and the fun! — Carol Jensen 6 The Annual BMDCNV Winter Walk W e want to thank Carol, Neal and those who planned the Berner walk in Ashford, CT. Everything went smoothly and the weather was perfect! It was delightful to walk the plowed roads of the Boy Scout Camp with 16 Berners and their friendly owners; and to see old faces and meet new ones. We’ve wanted to go to the Spring and Fall Fun Days for 2 years, so we took advantage of the fact that this was under an hour away. The raffle was great, especially since I won 7 2 of the items! The walk was invigorating, but it was also nice to come inside the lodge and have hot coffee and goodies. All the Berners were great, just hanging around having a good time. Everyone must be tired and sleeping soundly tonight. I know Barney is. — Michelle and Jay Larson Rescue Notebook Gunther is a five- year old Berner boy. He came into rescue grossly overweight at almost 175 pounds. His bulk made it hard for him to walk. He was filthy and smelly: His coat was encrusted with inches of dried dander, dirt, leaves, twigs and seashells. He had not been to a Meet Our Latest Adopted Berners by Linda DeCelles, Berner Inc. Rescue Chair Cali is a young girl with a playful personality and a happy heart. She began puppy life with a person who is confined to a wheelchair. As she grew into a typically energetic young Berner, her disabled owner realized that Cali needed an active home she could not provide. Her owner also could no longer afford the expense of caring for a growing Berner. Cali went into a Berner, Inc. foster home Cali with some health and socialization issues, which her fosters addressed. In her new home, these issues are being resolved. Cali has an older Berner “sister” to live and play with. Her new people are keeping her active and taking her to training classes. Cali will grow up in a happy, healthy Berner home. EDUCATION & RESCUE WE ARE THE RESCUE ARM OF THE NASHOBA CLUB veterinarian in two years. Due to a series of setbacks in the lives of his original owners, Gunther had been neglected and overfed. His new people have Berner experience and are big dog people: Gunther has a Great Pyrenees “brother” to work out with. Gunther has settled happily into his new home, where his people are dedicated to helping him lose weight to become a healthy Berner. Yukon is a five-year-old Berner boy who loves the outdoors and being with people. His previous owners were spending long hours at work. They wanted Yukon to have the companionship and exercise they were not providing. Yukon had gotten out of the yard several times in search of adventure and had been reluctant to go home. Yukon is large and was difficult for his previous owners to handle on leash, so he was not getting walked. In his new home, Yukon gets lots of walks, outdoor activity and regular companionship. Yukon has a history of shyness with strangers and a fear reaction to noises. His new people are working through these issues with help from Berner, Inc. Yukon is on his way to becoming a secure, sociable and active Berner. Monthly Health Tip for keeping our Berners in tip-top shape! Ten Steps to Dog Dental Health Did you know that regularly brushing your dog’s teeth and providing her with a healthy diet and plenty of chew toys can go a long way toward keeping her mouth healthy? Many dogs show signs of gum disease by the time they’re four years old because they aren’t provided with proper mouth care. Regular home checks can improve dental health and catch oral disease and deterioration early on. 1. The Breath Test 8. Know Your Mouth Disorders Sniff your dog’s breath — normal doggie-breath isn’t particularly fresh-smelling. However, if his breath is especially offensive and is accompanied by a loss of appetite, vomiting or excessive drinking or urinating, you’ll want to be off to the vet for further examination. Getting familiar with the possible mouth problems your dog may encounter will help you determine when it’s time to see a vet about treatment: • Periodontal disease is a painful infection between the tooth and the gum that can result in tooth loss and spread infection to the rest of the body. Signs are loose teeth, bad breath, tooth pain, sneezing and nasal discharge. •Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused mainly by accumulation of plaque, tartar and disease-producing bacteria above and below the gum line. Signs include bleeding, red, swollen gums and bad breath. It is reversible with regular teeth cleanings. •Halitosis—or bad breath—can be the first sign of a mouth problem and is caused by bacteria growing from food particles caught between the teeth or by gum infection. Regular toothbrushings are a great solution. • Swollen gums develop when tartar builds up and food gets stuck between the teeth. Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth at home and getting annual cleanings at the vet can prevent tartar and gingivitis. • Proliferating gum disease occurs when the gum grows over the teeth and must be treated to avoid gum infection. An inherited condition it can be treated with antibiotics. • Mouth tumors appear as lumps in the gums. Some are malignant and must be surgically removed. • Salivary cysts look like large, fluid-filled blisters under the tongue, but can also develop near the corners of the jaw. They require drainage, and the damaged saliva gland must be removed. • Canine distemper teeth can occur if a dog had distemper as a puppy. Adult teeth can appear looking eroded and can often decay. As damage is permanent, decayed teeth should be removed by a vet. 2. Lip Service Once a week, with your dog facing you, lift his lips and examine his gums and teeth. The gums should be pink, not white or red, and should show no signs of swelling. His teeth should be clean, without any brownish tartar. 3. Signs of Oral Disease The following are signs that your dog may have a problem in his mouth or gastrointestinal system and should be checked by a veterinarian: Bad breath, Excessive drooling, Inflamed gums, Tumors in the gums, Cysts under the tongue, Loose teeth 4. The Lowdown on Tooth Decay Bacteria and plaque-forming foods can cause build-up on a dog’s teeth. This can harden into tartar, possibly causing gingivitis, receding gums and tooth loss. One solution? Regular teeth cleanings, of course. 5. Canine Tooth-Brushing Kit Your kit should include - toothbrush for canines — it should be smaller than a human toothbrush and have softer bristles or a clean piece of soft gauze to wrap around your finger and toothpaste made especially for canines. A special mouthwash for dogs can also helpful. Never use fluoride with dogs under six months of age—it can interfere with their enamel formation. Do not use human toothpaste, which can irritate a dog’s stomach. 6. Brightening the Pearly Whites Taking these steps will make brushing a lot easier for both of you: • Get your dog used to the idea of having her teeth brushed. Massage her lips with your finger in a circular motion for 30 to 60 seconds once or twice a day for a few weeks. Then move on to her teeth and gums. 9. Chew on This Chew toys can satisfy your dog’s natural desire to chomp, while making his teeth strong. Gnawing on a chew toy can also help massage his gums and help keep his teeth clean by scraping away soft tartar. Ask your vet to recommend toxin-free rawhide, nylon and rubber chew toys. Limit or avoid stuffing chew toys with people food high in sugar or fat. • Put a little bit of toothpaste on her lips to get used to the taste. • Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the toothbrush and begin gentle brushing, as in step 7. • A veterinary exam beforehand may be helpful to find out if your dog’s gums are inflamed or if there are any issues to be considered before starting a dental health regimen. 7. Brushing Technique Place the brush or your gauze-wrapped finger at a 45-degree angle to the teeth and clean in small, circular motions. Work on one area of your dog’s mouth at a time, lifting her lip as necessary. The side of the tooth that touches the cheek usually has the most tartar, and giving a final downward stroke can help to remove it. If your dog resists having the inner surfaces of her teeth cleaned, don’t fight it—only a small amount of tartar accumulates there. Once you get the technique down, repeat brushing two or three times a week. 10. Diet for Healthy Teeth Ask your vet about a specially formulated dry food that can slow down the formation of plaque and tartar. Also, avoid feeding your dog table scraps, instead giving him treats that are specially formulated to keep canine teeth healthy. 10 Borrowed and edited from ASPCA.org.
