Greetings All,
The Spectrum Connection is something that I find myself truly looking forward to. I thank
each of you for your contributions and want to encourage everyone to share with the rest of
our professional family what is going on around you.
I wanted to take this opportunity to re-visit the “why” of our purpose or the “why we are in
business.” In the 7th edition of The Spectrum Connection, we uncovered that the purpose of
our business is to change people’s lives. We want to change our client’s lives by listening to
their wants and following through to deliver what they want. We follow through at a valued
price and by keeping our focus on quality presentation. We take all the hassles out of their
hospitality experience and their professional lives. We understand their needs and put those
first and foremost. Once they experience this sort of care, they don’t want to go back to their
old lives before Spectrum. Their lives change for the better! They become Spectrum
devotees, tell others of their experience and create new and lasting business. That business
in turn changes each of our lives, creating new income and opportunities. Of course, the end
result is that the lives of all of our families change and they are better off also.
The surest way to accomplish this goal with our clients is to do what we do best - adhere to
the Golden Rule and put our client’s needs ahead of our own. But what if we were to adopt
the Golden Rule into every aspect of our personal and business life? Do unto others as we
would have them do unto us? What if we were all to make a conscious decision to accept this
way of thinking and acting in every segment of our lives every single minute of every single
day?
I can assure you that GREAT rewards would be reaped. Adopting this attitude will not only
make the life of the individual successful, it will make those around them successful. It will
also create a positive approach to life that brings about an attitude of paying it forward and
creating awesome positive karma.
By putting the needs and desires of our clients first, one can easily see the tangible reward of
business and associated income. Putting the needs of our associates, family and others first
has a less tangible reward, but an ever more far reaching global result. So think BIG by
thinking of others. You are the one person that can make the difference.

Welcome to derek mills
spectrum’s new chief financial officer
Spectrum is proud to welcome DEREK MILLS to our company family.
Derek is the new Chief Financial Officer for Spectrum and as Dave
said, “Good things come to those who wait, and we got a good thing
with Derek.” Derek is excited to be on board with Spectrum and said
that he was attracted to the company because he was “…looking for
something that I could dive into.”
A native Texan with local roots, Derek was born and raised in Conroe, Texas. His father,
Michael Mills Sr., is a certified dental technician and his mother, Patricia Mills is a 6th grade
teacher in The Woodlands. Derek’s older brother, Michael, lives in San Antonio and co-owns
a dental lab with their father. Derek graduated from Conroe High School in 2000 where he
played tennis.
It seems that Derek was destined to become an Aggie (WHOOP!). Derek’s uncle attended
A&M and was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Also, his father grew up next door to former
Texas A&M football coach, R.C. Slocum. For as long as he can remember, every time he and
his family went to an Aggie football game, they visited Coach Slocum. Derek graduated from
A&M in 2004 with his degree in Accounting. He started out as a marketing major, but
switched after he took an accounting class. He thought it was logical and made sense. Also,
the job prospects after graduation were better.
After graduation, Derek moved to San Antonio where his father and brother were living. He
took a job with a small firm called Wonder & Company CPAs. Derek actually started out
working on a mix of tax, audit and other accounting type work. After living in San Antonio for
two years, he decided the time was right to move back to Houston. Derek started with PKF
Texas in May 2006 and worked with clients ranging from theatrical to agriculture to oil and
gas. His next career move brought him to Spectrum.
Outside of work, Derek is involved with the community. He has gone to Mexico to build
houses with The Woodlands First United Methodist Church, and volunteers with the American
Cancer Society and M.D. Anderson. When Derek was 17 he was diagnosed with cancer.
Luckily the cancer was caught early and he just celebrated his 10 years in remission this past
September 2009. During his treatment, he received a handwritten letter from Lance
Armstrong. The nurse at Conroe High School knew Lance, and asked if he would send Derek
a letter of encouragement. Because of the excellent care he received at M.D. Anderson,
Derek takes the time to work as a phone volunteer, calling patients who have just been
diagnosed to answer their questions and provide them with additional support.
Now that he has the CPA exam behind him, Derek is also hoping to start travelling more. He
ran his first half marathon in Las Vegas in December 2009 and another in Houston during
January 2010. And now he’s “running” with the Spectrum Team!

Love is a verb. It is such an exciting time in our company; a time when we are all
moving quickly from task to task, discussing our next moves and what we need from
each other to finish up our individual and collective responsibilities. This time of year
is one of my personal favorites – I enjoy the camaraderie with my associates, I enjoy
hearing the happiness from our clients that they will soon be visited by the same
wonderful folks (you!) that take care of their needs year after year. It is a satisfying and
gratifying time of year.
I was recently talking with a friend and we brought up the topic of “love”. I believe that
many people, including myself, define love to be an emotion that you have about
another person or people in your life. I love my son, my family, my friends and the love
I have and share is definitely an emotion for me. But, the interesting thing for me is
that while love makes me feel an array of emotions, it also causes me to be a doer.
Love is as much a verb as it is a noun. It is an action. Love is doing things for others
to “show” them that you care and want what is the very best for them. Sometimes that
show of love may not be what feels the best, but it is what is the best act of love that
can be given in that set of circumstances. Sometimes it’s tough love; I am certain I have
been the recipient of tough love and have given tough love when it was needed. I am
grateful that love is as much of an action as it is an emotion. I encourage you to
practice loving one another, family and friends by showing others that you put love to
work in everything you do.
The challenge is on!
As many of you know, there are a handful of us that
workout through a Boot Camp workout program. April 27th started our 90-day workout
challenge! We are challenged to work out every single day for the next 90-days and
record our exercise and progress. So, if you see us doing something crazy (other than
normal everyday crazy that is) then we are likely getting in our workout for the day.
Don’t hesitate to join us and encouragement is always welcome! Go team!
A special welcome to Derek Mills our new CFO. Derek is bringing so
much to the table and it is exciting to have him as part of our Spectrum family.
Here’s to an awesome summer!

THE WOODLANDS - The Woodforest Bank Club
The Pavilion is reopening with another star-studded line-up. All the
regular stars are returning, including Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews,
Sting and many more. The first weekend was kicked off with
Buzzfest, which is always a big event.

There was a wonderful event last month called the Partners Pavilion
Wine Dinner Fundraiser. The event was held on stage at The
Pavilion and you can see from the photos what a beautiful job Adam
& Sarah did with the setting, décor and tables.

the organization raised
more money for the arts
than ever before!

Colin Chapman has joined Spectrum as the new General Manager
of The Woodforest Bank Club. Colin has worked in the area before &
brings a strong restaurant background to the club operations. He’s
been busy getting things ready for the big opening this weekend and
we all welcome him aboard.

JAY JUNG continued
NEW ORLEANS -The Mahalia Jackson Theatre
The Mahalia Jackson Theatre is off and running strong for a great
start to our New Year. With the production of Wicked we had the
three strongest weeks that our company has ever had!
With record sales, they will be having the Government Mule
concert this weekend and shooting for a $25,000 night, which
will be their strongest performance ever!!!!
The Saenger Theatre renovation is still moving along with a
targeted reopening date of Fall 2011. The Lion King has already
been booked for a 4 week run to celebrate the Grand Opening!
SAN ANTONIO - The Majestic
Velma continues to keep things rolling down on The Riverwalk in
San Antonio. With catering backstage and events, plus running
the theatres, San Antonio continues to be a very strong, solid
market within our theatre group.
Velma is heading to Austin for Van Morrison rehearsals, as well as
his show later this weekend. She just finished another huge
Fiesta Texas week in San Antonio and once again her team did a
fantastic job!
Keep up the great work in San Antonio, Velma!

On April 29th the Southern Gaming Magazine hosted the Derby
Poker Tournament at the Louisville Palace. This tournament
benefits the Blessings In A Backpack charity. Southern Gaming is
hoping that it will become an annual event. For those of you
who follow the world series of poker, Robert Williamson III, an
eleven time World Series of Poker winner, and Phil Hellmuth
were in attendance.
NEW RECORD!
We set a new single show sales record here this month with
Stone Temple Pilots. We sold $29,036.79 with a $12.30 per cap.
Comment from Jason Reed This is a new sales record for the Theatre division! Remember
these sales are coming in a very limited time period of only
three hours. That’s $10,000 per hour. Great job, Josh!!

BALTIMORE – The HippodromeWe just finished a great run of Phantom of the Opera, breaking
concession per cap numbers that date from Wicked in 2007. On
the last Saturday of the run, Sean ran a $3.68 per cap. This is
unheard of for a Broadway show. Congratulations Sean! Let’s
set new goals and break those, too.
Also, we have opened The Hipp Café from 11:30 – 2:30 for lunch
service Monday through Friday. We have had a great response in
the neighborhood and expect it to grow and become the hot spot
for dine in and take out lunch in the area. Check out our new

BOSTON - The Colonial
Boston is holding strong and steady and has just finished up a
two week run of Cats at The Colonial. No records set here, but
some good steady income numbers are pushing $2.25 per caps.
The Charles Playhouse is finally starting to show steady added
income for our Comedy Club with some much improved acts.
And of course, everyone still loves Karaoke, which once again
has proven to be a strong revenue stream.

Ruben’s Challenge
Hello Team,
I was reflecting on how we all read articles about taking care of the
customers, increasing sales and retaining customers and would like to
pass on some thoughts.
I want each of you to stop and think about what all goes into an event and
how it takes each and every one of us to complete a job…from Dave to
sales to production to the front office to accounting to the kitchen and
warehouse.
I would like to take this time to thank each and everyone that works for
Spectrum. It takes each of you to get the job done. Great staff is very
important in being able to produce successful events time after time. This
enables Spectrum to perform correctly and retain old business and build
new business.
I would especially like to focus on the hourly folks and how important they
are to the success of our company. They work very hard and a hello or a
smile from you goes a long way.
I want to challenge each of you to ask yourself a couple of questions:
“Do I know the name of everyone that works here?”
“Do I know anything about them?”
How about taking the first step and introducing yourself to the people you
don’t know? Get to know a little bit about them and their family.
To help accomplish this, I am going to focus on a different person in each
upcoming newsletter and will share information so we all get to know them
a little better. Please feel free to submit the name of someone you would
like to know more about to Lynn or to myself or send in the information
yourself. To get things rolling, see if you can identify who this describes:

Last month we produced and catered an event for CCRO and SNL
Energy. It was a two day meeting event held at the Pavilion Party
Tent and Woodforest Bank Club. We provided lunch and snacks
both days, as well as all the staging, tables, linens and chairs. The
setup was quite elaborate and I know that Lisa, Ruben and their
crews worked extremely hard to meet the client’s needs and
exceed their expectations. I was told throughout the process how
flexible and great Spectrum was to work with.
Hats off to everyone who helped make this event possible!

Its been busy in the Houston Sales Department, as Melanie and
Sarah can both attest. Most recently, Chef Jay, Adam, Blane, and
Lisa blew our clients away at the New Danville Community
Fundraiser, as well as the Pults-McPherson wedding on April 10th
(see photos next page). We’ve also had a number of Verizon
events, including the Grand Opening at the new Conroe store on
May 1st. Later this year, Spectrum may also have the opportunity
to be a part of history. NASA will be hosting an event at Ellington
Field for 3,000 employees and their families to commemorate the
final space shuttle landing. We have bid on the event and eagerly
anticipate the green light for this historical event. I will also be
heading out on the road again for upcoming golf tournaments and
Bonnaroo and look forward to seeing all of my traveling friends.

Festival Update
From Tony Terwilliger – Director, Festival Division
HOUSTON CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
HCF 2010 was another outstanding success! So many people
came together to produce this truly one-of-a-kind event to raise
money in support of Child Advocates and their mission to serve
the abused and neglected children here in Houston. During the
two day festival weekend, over 40,000 people were in
attendance to enjoy the top-notch family entertainment. The
fun included appearances by i-Carly star, Nathan Kress, JONAS
celeb, Chelsea Staub, Dora and Diego, 10 Family Adventure
Zones, 6 stages of entertainment and over 300 activities. The
event has now raised over $4,200,000 for Child Advocates.

all the guys in the warehouse assisting with set-up and
teardown, the success of this event is directly attributable to
the many talented people we have on staff at Spectrum.
iFest - Spotlighting the Caribbean
For the first time ever, the one weekend of the Houston
Children’s Festival and the two weekends of the Houston
International Festival were back-to-back for three consecutive
weekends. That meant that immediately at the end of the
Houston Children’s Festival, we all had to work quickly to
reconfigure the festival site in downtown Houston, not only
turning it from the Houston Children’s Festival to the Houston
International Festival, but increasing the size of the event by
over 30%. This meant more equipment had to be brought in and
installed, in addition to the reconfiguration.
This was a complete Spectrum team effort. Due to the efforts of
Ruben and the entire warehouse crew getting all the needed
equipment to the site and to Eduardo Ventura taking the lead in
running the on-site installation crew, we were able to meet our
deadline for the Friday morning opening ceremonies. Once the
festival opened, Eduardo, William, and Santos were on-hand to
handle many issues and they did so flawlessly. The two weekend
event was a huge success, thanks in no small part to the
outstanding work done by Spectrum.
