\ THINKING GL BALLY In the 21st century, practically every major industry has global elements or aspirations. In response, business schools are boosting the international components of their MBA programs. Specifics vary by school, but a passport may soon be a prerequisite for earning a business degree. By Aaron Dalton The Asian Tail ROGER JENKINS, dean of the Farmer School of Business at Miami University Top: The Farmer School of Business offers several international experiences to students, including programs in Hong Kong. 154 At the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, Dean Roger Jenkins is known as “The China Dean” for his belief in the rising economic importance of Asia—particularly China. “I feel quite strongly that the Asian tail will wag the global dog,” Jenkins says. “The United States is no longer the center of the universe.” When Jenkins joined the Farmer School eight years ago, he took the dramatic step of shutting down the school’s MBA program. Under his direction, a new accelerated program took shape. In just 14 months, students can obtain their MBA by focusing on a tightly integrated curriculum. March 2011 deltaskymag.com The pace is intense, but Jenkins made sure to carve out time for a six-week global consultancy requirement at the end of the program. The class of 2010 worked on projects for companies such as Dell, Radiometer and Procter & Gamble in Europe and Asia. A faculty member travels to each student’s final presentation to provide assistance and assess the effects of the student’s contributions. Why place such heavy emphasis on international experience? “Employers who are recruiting our students tell me that a global mindset is one of the top skills they seek in an MBA graduate,” Jenkins says. “They want to hire people \ who feel comfortable working with and understanding other cultures.” Limited Time, Maximum Impact A N N KO C U R E K of Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, above, arranges weeklong classes for students at partner schools around the world. As part of her work for the Evening MBA (EvMBA) program at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, Anne Kocurek arranges weeklong classes at international partner schools. “When I speak with colleagues in Europe, they try to tell me about these fabulous two-month programs, and I have to explain that many Americans only have 10 days of vacation,” Kocurek says. Goizueta requires its EvMBA students to complete an international module by choosing from a menu of classes at partner institutions. Options include studying “Business in Brazil” at the Fundacáo Getulio Vargas in Rio De Janeiro or taking a class on “The Business Environment in China” at Fudan University in Shanghai. Other international module destinations have included Bringing World-Class MBA Faculty to You. Argentina and Finland, with new locations added every few years. The modules, which are led by the host school’s business faculty, typically involve visits to multinational corporations, presentations by local business experts or opportunities to network with students from a variety of American, European and Asian MBA programs. As for Goizueta’s full-time MBA students, more than half of them complete an international internship, study abroad or take an international mid-semester travel module to build real-world skills. They also learn about business leadership in countries such as Brazil, India, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore or South Africa. “There’s a global angle to the whole program,” Kocurek says. “Classes take a global perspective. Even if a company just does business in the United States, there are frequent discussions about the rationale for expansion and the places where that expansion might create the most value.” Location Matters With its Embassy Row location on Massachusetts Avenue, the American University Kogod School Instructor Paul Hudnut, Olympus Innovation Award winner Make a difference in your career with a Distance MBA from the top-ranked public business school in the region. Between residencies, Fuqua students continue their studies from home via an Internet-based distance learning platform. This combination of cultural immersion, global networking and the flexibility of distance learning formed an irresistible package for Randy Zwitch, director of Web analytics at Barclaycard U.S., who graduated in 2010. “The greatest benefit of the program comes from learning about ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// variations in business culture around the world,” Zwitch says. “The subtle nuances of a business deal frequently determine its success. Accelerated programs are a great solution for working professionals who already have a degree. By Jane Di Leo F or executives in today’s ever-changing marketplace, being globally minded is no longer a suggestion or an added individual value—it’s required. A company may be based within a specific country, but it is affected by factors from the outside world. When executive education got started approximately 60 years ago, classes focused on one major market/country or another, says Stephen Burnett, associate dean of executive education at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. “Today, however, all programs have to take a global perspective. You build that into everything you do,” Burnett says. Major universities are providing professionals with an opportunity to grow and learn through executive education programs, which bring in perspectives, leaders and case studies from all over the globe. Here’s a sample of six such programs. We organize our programs around the executives. We make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for participants to learn from each other and to apply ideas from the program to the pressing challenges in their careers and companies. – Paul Ingram, Kravis professor of business at the Columbia Business School Ross School of Business University: University of Michigan Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan Course Locations: Most courses are held on campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. VELASCO Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, The University of Tennessee Center for Executive Education The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Director of Degree Programs, Executive Education University of Notre Dame Today’s global leaders have been challenged to focus on ethical, sociological, environmental and political issues that vary significantly by country, industry and culture. Education must keep pace for leaders to successfully meet these challenges. Supply chains have become extended, more complex and often less responsive and efficient. Demands on profitability have driven extensive changes to business strategies. Environmental issues have impacted performance and costs. Today’s executives require access to programs with a comprehensive global scope and structure that is specifically aimed at the business, supply chain, leadership and cultural challenges they face every day. This cross-cultural competence is essential for a leader to be effective and successful. As a result, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, knows it is imperative to integrate a global focus into all five of its executivelevel MBA programs—from global immersions, globally diverse student profiles and a global supply chain industry consortium forum. Most executive MBA programs have incorporated multinational marketing, global supply chain management and international finance content, but leading schools understand the deeper lessons required to develop a global focus. They understand how culture affects business viewpoints and interactions—including other cultures’ differing perspectives on U.S. norms such as creating shareholder value. They teach graduates to engage in strategic thinking, providing the tools required to solve leadership challenges in an increasingly complex, interdependent and rapidly changing world. Educators achieve this through a well-integrated curriculum. We must extend core courses with experiential learning, cultivation of a strategic-thinking mindset and consideration of the global context. Our graduates will then be able to confidently scan a dynamic global environment, seeing challenges and opportunities through a new lens. Their decisions will be rooted in their knowledge, experience and values in order to serve the greater good.
