Product News ARIA Wins the 15th Int’l Bicycle Design Competition Text: Editorial Dept. ▲Industry professionals from Taiwan served on the IBDC’s international jury. he mission of the International Bicycle Design Competition (IBDC) is to cultivate originality and encourage designers to reach their full creative potential. Since its inception 15 years ago, the IBDC has received over ten thousand entries from 86 countries, all of which have contributed unique, imaginative ideas to promote and revitalize the international bicycle industry. Just like previous years, IBDC organizers T 172 BMU 2011 Spring successfully completed the 2011 judging process electronically from preliminary to final round. Most of this year’s designs offer solutions to the problem of carbon dioxide emission. In addition to light folding bikes that can be used with public transport, there are also designs that transform the simple mobility tool into a complex vehicle with multiple functionalities, making bicycles no longer just a means of trans- www.biketaiwan.com portation. Through the ingenious and creative designs of today’s bicycle makers, they have come to offer a plethora of practical and entertaining extras for an extraordinary new riding experience. Its innovative structure and uniquely designed handlebars help easily maintain proper riding position. In order to reduce peddling resistance, the saddle and cranks are also made of carbon fiber. It has a built-in but detachable suitcase for storing personal items. Bihandy is designed to induce those who currently depend on motorcycles for shortdistance transportation to use bikes instead. www.biketaiwan.com Product News Excellent Award Excellent Award Title of Entry Country Designer(s) Description MOVO Hong Kong Roger Sui Yin Mak MOVO is a self-locking electric bike with a removable power core. The bike can be electrically powered for daily commuting or pedal powered for weekend exercise. The front control part with the core can be separated from the rear for added security when locked in a bike rock. The removable front part also prevents theft, as MOVO cannot be used without the front section. Title of Entry U.L.E.V. Country Canada Designer(s) Ryan Aubrey / Terrence Cong Li / Michael Vranas / Payam Shalchian Description U.L.E.V. is a police bike with the ability to quickly transform between different scenarios. The main design features include: quick dismounting via the retractable seat; removable shield and baton integrated into the front wheel assembly; built-in PDA as well as emergency lights and sirens placed in the handlebars; mutiple secure storage solutions for official documents; a firstaid kit; and more. U3 easily and quickly folds into a compact size for easy carrying, and to save space when the bike is not in use. 2011 Spring BMU 175 Product News Excellent Award Excellent Award Title of Entry Walking Bike RSV - Running Spor's Vehicle Country Austria Designer(s) Axel Thallemer / Dominik Diensthuber Martin Danzer / Bachlmair / Nimmervoll Description RSV is designed for people who love to exercise. The bike is suitable for both short and long distance transport. The seat and handlebars are adjustable to ensure that every user is comfortable riding the bike. Title of Entry Country Designer(s) Description Xeno Austria Michael Jaritz Xeno features a special frame for a rubber spring mechanism in a new suspension design, which allows the user to adjust according to terrain. To provide safety and security, built-in lights are placed in the handlebars and seat post, and a lock is placed close to the hub. The user can fold the bike without any back-bending whatsoever.
