PRESIDENT’S GREETING
Welcome to the 2016 baseball and softball season at Motlow State
Community College. Some of the finest student-athletes, coaches
and volunteers in the country represent the Bucks and the Lady
Bucks, and we anticipate an outstanding season for both our
baseball and softball teams.
Our athletic programs are a pivotal part of the Motlow experience,
supporting and providing physical development, cooperative
learning and leadership skills. For our community, Motlow athletics
enhance social involvement by providing a great source of
fellowship, student support and community participation.
Motlow State athletics has a 46-year history of success that is
attributed to the dedication of our coaches, players, parents and
our valued supporters. We continue to develop successful leaders
on and off the court, both in the classroom and the community.
The Motlow athletic family is pleased to welcome Janice Morey
to its athletic family as the new head coach of the Lady Bucks.
Dan McShea enters his tenth year running the baseball program. We are confident both will bring
success to Motlow athletics and will represent the college well in the community.
Admission to all Motlow athletic events is free and we welcome and encourage you to come enjoy
our campus, athletic programs and other college events. Motlow provides a wholesome and fun
environment for students, spectators and supporters.
Motlow State is your community college. Come be a part of what you helped build and continue to
support. As always, I look forward to welcoming each of you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony G. (Tony) Kinkel
President

Motlow State Community College Fall 2015 Highlights
The 2015 fall semester will go down as one of
the most prolific time frames in Motlow State
Community College history. By accomplishing
multiple significant milestones, Motlow has
stepped to the forefront of higher education
institutions, not only statewide, but nationwide
as well.
From leading all colleges in the state in
percentage enrollment increase to the Smyrna
campus being the second-fastest growing
college campus in America, and from having
the National Honors Council Student of the
Year to being the home of the nation’s leading
junior college men’s basketball scorer; the
Motlow community has a lot to be proud of.
Every successful team needs dynamic
leadership. Prior to the beginning of the term,
Motlow welcomed the college’s sixth president,
Dr. Anthony G. Kinkel. Dr. Kinkel has brought
a renewed energy to all four Motlow campuses
through his innovative ideas and creative
concepts.
At the top of the list of achievements is the
astonishing growth of the student population,
fueled by the inaugural semester of the
Tennessee Promise scholarship program.
Compared to the same period in 2014, Motlow
led all public universities in Tennessee with
an enrollment (headcount) increase of 10.5
percent and a Full Time Equivalency (FTE)
increase of 21.9 percent. This amazing increase
qualified Motlow as the fastest-growing college
in the state of Tennessee, and placed it among
the fastest in the nation.
The Smyrna campus led the way in student
growth with an impressive 26.2 percent
enrollment increase and 42.1 percent FTE
increase over the same period in 2014,
followed by the Moore County campus with 9.8
percent enrollment increase and 8.7 percent
FTE increase. The McMinnville campus was
next with 8.7 percent enrollment increase and
14.5 percent FTE increase, and the Fayetteville
campus had a 7.7 percent enrollment increase
and a 9.2 percent FTE increase.
As a result of the student population growth,
eight completion coaches were added to the
Motlow staff, more than any other college in
the state. These completion coaches will be
essential in guiding Motlow students to
graduation.
Continuing to set the Tennessee Promise pace
for all community colleges in the state,
88 percent of students who used the Promise
in fall 2015 have met the qualifications to
continue using the Promise for the spring 2016
semester. That is the highest percentage of any
community college in Tennessee. Motlow also
had the highest number of Tennessee Promise
employee mentors per capita, with a total of 91
volunteers signing up for this important support
position, a significant increase over the 22 who
volunteered a year ago.
American freshman basketball season by
leading the nation in scoring and being named
by multiple organizations as the top junior
college player in the country. Barford has signed
a letter of intent to the University of Arkansas to
continue his basketball and academic career.
Two Motlow programs achieved critical
accreditation during the fall semester. The
nursing program was granted continuing
accreditation through the spring of 2023 by
the Accreditation Commission for Education
in Nursing. The Motlow Mechatronics program
received the prestigious Association of
Technology, Management and Applied
Engineering accreditation after five years of
hard work. Both accreditations are the
marks of excellence in education within their
respective fields.
The 2015 Motlow College Foundation golf
tournament, held at The Bear Trace at Tims
Ford State Park in September, was the most
successful tournament in the Foundation’s
history. Over $15,000 was raised to support
Motlow students through the Foundation.
Motlow student recognition abounded in the
fall semester. One hundred percent of the
2015 nursing program graduates passed the
National Council Licensure Examination, yet
another Motlow best-in-state performance.
Caitlin Tripp, a sophomore from Tullahoma,
was recognized as the National Collegiate
Honors Council Student of the Year at the
national conference in November. This singular
award recognizes an outstanding honors
student selected from two-year colleges
nationwide, and a Motlow student has now
won the award two consecutive years.
Jaylen Barford, a sophomore student-athlete
from Jackson, Tenn., has followed up his All2
The Motlow Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) education program graduated its
inaugural class, consisting of 10 Paramedic
and 12 Advanced Emergency Medical
Technician graduates, all coming from the
immediate service area of the college.
Major facility renovations are another highlight
of the fall semester at Motlow, led by the
completion of a comprehensive upgrade to
Simon Hall, the primary classroom building on
the Moore County campus. Powers Auditorium
in Eoff Hall also received a much needed
facelift and technical upgrade, including new
seating and a new sound system. The baseball
and softball fields were upgraded with new
field turf, fencing, and dugout improvements,
and the McMinnville campus parking lot was
repaired and regenerated. In all, the College
spent more than 2.2 million dollars on major
capital improvements.
These impressive accomplishments
underscore the resurgence of Motlow State
Community College as one of the leading
higher education institutions in the state of
Tennessee. As the spring semester begins,
Motlow is poised to continue its momentum in
better serving its students and communities.
Baseball Head Coach
DAN McSHEA
Baseball coach Dan McShea is Motlow’s longest tenured coach, as the 2016
season will be his 10th leading the baseball program. McShea has compiled
an overall record of 209-243-1 during his nine seasons. He was named the
College’s interim athletic director in July 2015 and served in that capacity
until Nov. 1.
The 2015 Bucks compiled an 11-32 record, but a strong recruiting class is
expected to return the Bucks to conference contention in 2016.
Dan came to Motlow from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was an
assistant coach at North Forrest High School. During Coach McShea’s
two years at North Forrest, the baseball program advanced to the State
playoffs each year. Prior to coaching at North Forrest, McShea was an
assistant coach and pitching coach at William Carey College where the
team advanced to regional play and saw two players go on to play in the
professional ranks.
McShea played college baseball at Ole Miss, advancing to a regional in his
last two seasons where he was a starting pitcher. He was also named to the
SEC All-Tournament Team and received SEC Academic Awards. After
playing at Ole Miss, McShea played professionally for two season before
beginning his coaching career.
Between teaching mathematics and coaching baseball, Coach McShea
recently completed a second master’s degree in business administration. He holds a BA in mathematics from
Ole Miss and a master’s degree in education from William Carey University.
Coach McShea and wife Natalie live in Lynchburg. They are the parents of big sister Harper, and brothers Brody
and Corbin.

Softball Head Coach
JANICE MOREY
Lynchburg native and former Motlow College softball player Janice
Morey has seen her life and career come full circle after being named
the new head softball coach at Motlow.
Morey comes back home to Lynchburg and Motlow after serving most
recently as an assistant softball coach at Stewarts Creek High School
after 10 years as head softball coach at Oakland, where she led her
team to the District 7-AAA championship in 2014.
Morey graduated from Moore County High School and continued
her athletic career playing both basketball and softball at Motlow in
the mid-1990s. She continued as a student-athlete at Cumberland
University in Lebanon where she earned her bachelor’s degree. During
the 1999 and 2000 seasons she served as a graduate assistant for
the Cumberland softball program while earning her master’s degree.
She officially began her coaching career at Shelbyville in the fall of
2000 and coached the Eaglettes’ softball program for five successful
seasons before moving to Murfreesboro and taking over as head
coach at Oakland.
Morey becomes the College’s sixth softball head coach in the
program’s 22 years of existence. She replaces Tori Raby-Gentry, another former Motlow player who
served as head coach for the past four seasons and as athletic director for the previous 18 months.
Raby-Gentry, who resigned in July, led the Lady Bucks to a 27-19-2 record in 2015 and an overall
record of 84-107-2.
A Dining Destination
S I N C E
1913
A long –standing southern tradition, Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House Restaurant has been
featured around the world in cooking publications, magazines, television shows, and many more
outlets which have collectively made Lynchburg’s own Miss Bobo’s a world-renowned dining
experience unlike any other.
The boarding house was founded in 1908 when Mr. and Mrs. Bobo purchased the beautiful
Greek Revival style mansion in the humble whiskey-making town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. In the
days before hotels or rental apartments, Bobo’s boarded any and every Lynchburg visitor. Whether it
be for a night or for several years, Miss Mary opened her home to the tired and weary, giving them a
place to stay, good food in their bellies, and a family for the short time they resided there.
To this day, the boarding house carries on the legacy of Miss Mary by inviting guests into her
home for a daily lunch seating at 1 PM. On a busy day, Miss Bobo’s will take an 11am seating, and
on the busiest days they will seat at 3pm. Guests have the opportunity to sit around the table with an
endless spread of country cookin’ and share stories of their travels with other boarding house visitors,
as well as hear the stories of simpler times from the table hostess.
Just about the time the conversations wind down and guests are filled to the brim with Miss
Bobo’s southern fare, famous whiskey apples, and dessert; visitors indulge in some old-fashioned front
porch sittin’ just outside the beautiful white home. Finally, after your food has settled, join us in the gift
shop, where you can purchase beautiful southern gifts and, of course, the famous Miss Mary Bobo’s
Cook Book.
