TSW’s Campus Master Plan for
Motlow State Community College addressed two significant
issues: the need for updates
to aging facilities on the Main
Campus, and overwhelming
growth on the Smyrna Campus
in suburban Nashville.
Motlow State’s rural Main Campus is centered on an intimate
quadrangle and is defined
by its mature tree canopy. A
number of buildings from the
late 1960s, however, are in significant need of repairs. Given
the lack of projected enrollment growth and limited funds
for improvements, TSW conducted a detailed space analysis to identify underutilized and
poor quality teaching spaces.
Recommended improvements
focus on targeted renovations
and repurposing of space to
make the most of existing buildings and limited funds.
Motlow State’s Smyrna Campus, located in suburban Nashville’s booming Rutherford County, has experienced very rapid growth since its opening in 2006. Needs
for all types of space were obvious, so TSW focused efforts on how to provide library space as well as dining and gathering spaces as the campus grows. TSW
also worked with the college to clarify academic space needs based on projected
growth and proposed expansions. The Master Plan shows how future building locations could create a series of interior open spaces rather than simply facing the main
parking lot. This series of common greenspaces will unite buildings and create an
inviting campus that students and the college can be proud of.
