Hair and the way a head of hair
looks have always been given a
dual significance: aesthetic and
psychological.
A person with a thick and shiny
head of hair is, above all, a healthy
person, and this perception, when
we talk about hair, translates into
a person’s good looks, thus in
psychological-physical well-being.
On the contrary, when hair tends to
thin or shed, or is fragile and dull,
or the scalp is altered or affected by
conditions such as dandruff, often
this is a sign a person is not in good
health conditions. Hence, looking
after one’s hair daily and constantly
to keep them healthy, beautiful and
thick, and to prevent them from
shedding, is critical to “feeling
good”.

THE PROBLEM:

Hair consists of two main parts: an external, visible portion called stem or
shaft, and an inner part, called the hair follicle, which in turn consists of the
root and bulb, the portion that generates hair. The hair follicle is a dynamic
structure that undergoes different phases (hair cycle):
ANAGEN phase
or growth phase
TELOGEN phase
or resting phase,
during which
there is no vital
activity of hair
CATAGEN phase or reduction
of the vital functions of hair
Undergoing their own life cycle,
it is a natural fact that every day
a number of hair will shed and
that, cyclically, will grow back.
20-50 hairs shedding per day is
considered normal, proportionally
to the mass of hair of each
individual.
We talk of situations that lead to hair
loss to generally indicate all those
conditions where an individual
undergoes an increase in hair loss
and progressive thinning. There are
circumstances where hair will shed
at an increased rate, such as:
SEASONAL DEFLUVIUM - Also human beings are subject to a physiological form of hair loss called seasonal defluvium, typically occurring
in spring and autumn, which can
however occur at any time of year in
a subjective manner. Usually self-healing, it can turn into a chronic form at
times though. It shows with increased
hair shedding (100-300 hairs a day)
and can last for 1 or 2 months.
There are many possible causes: lack
of food, unbalanced diets, diseases
(infectious or inflammatory), taking
certain drugs for prolonged periods,
breast feeding, physical and / or
emotional stress.
TELOGENIC DEFLUVIUM (ACUTE
and CHRONIC) - When the
percentage of bulbs in the telogen
phase exceeds the normal amount, to
the detriment of the number of bulbs in
the growth phase (anagen), we have
a form of hair loss called telogenic
defluvium (or telogen effluvium), very
common especially in women of
childbearing age, and more rarely
occurring in men. The main symptom
is strong hair loss, up to 200 or more
per day, shedding from all areas of
the head. It involves a true interruption
of the ‘biological clock’ of the hair
follicle. The active period lasts much
less and a large quantity of follicles
prematurely enters the telogen phase.
ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA (AA) - The
main cause of androgenetic alopecia
(commonly known as baldness) is
identified with an anomalous effect
by androgen hormones on hair
follicles, typically located in the frontal
region and in the vertex. It is not the
excessive amount of androgens that
determines baldness, but rather the
effect of the conversion of testosterone
into its more active metabolite,
DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE
(DHT),
which causes the miniaturisation of
the bulb and triggers the progressive
inactivation of the bulb, with irreversible
loss of hair. The transformation of
testosterone into DHT is performed by
the enzyme 5-α-reductase.
BIONIKE'S STRATEGY
Besides the specific causes that
have been identified for the various
hair diseases, the common factor
of all forms of hair loss is the rapid
progression, much faster than normal,
of hair follicles from the anagen
phase to the catagen and then
telogen phases. Both in androgenetic
alopecia and defluvium pattern
hair loss forms, the lengthening of
the anagen phase is essential for
reducing hair loss.
If the anagen phase is prolonged and
cell activity is increased, it is possible
that miniaturised hair can turn into
terminal hair and lead a number of
hair follicles back into being active.
The hair follicle is one of the most
complex structures of the human
body, and requires a large amount
of energy to keep vital and produce
the hair shaft. Recent scientific
studies have shown that in most
hair-related diseases the various hair
bulb components undergo a process
of premature senescence caused
especially by oxidative stress, up
to complete inactivity and death
(apoptosis).
The latest research provides active
ingredients that can contribute to
counter this process and that work
by prolonging the anagen phase,
thereby delaying the switch to the
catagen phase.
To specifically deal with hair loss
problems, BioNike has developed

person’s attitude towards shampooing

Normal and naturally healthy hair has a
pH ranging from 4.5 to 5.5, thus an acid
pH. The cuticle structure is compact and
well sealed, this condition keeping hair
naturally beautiful and shiny. The inner
cortex is protected, and resistance and
elasticity are guaranteed by a proper level
of hydration of hair. The pH of damaged
or stressed hair is over 7.0, the surface
of the cuticle is raised, opaque and not
vital. This condition can cause mechanical
damage while combing or brushing hair,
or due to the impact of external factors.
In addition, the cortex is more exposed
as well and hair can easily become
dehydrated, thus dry and brittle.

Today’s pace of life, pollution,
social and image needs, with the
consequent habits that follow (hair
treatments, hair sprays, hairstyling),
lead us to take care of our hair
more carefully than before. This
behaviour results in the need for
more frequent washing and specific
treatments. Faced with these new
social behaviours, our scalp tends
to react, showing its sensitivity. It
can be affected by too aggressive
detergents and show a state of
imbalance with itching, tingling and
even burning. The most recurrent and
evident conditions stemming from the
aforesaid increased sensitivity are
dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
Dandruff - Dandruff is a common
disorder of the scalp, caused by
excessive scalp flaking. The small
scales that slough off in larger
numbers than usual group up in
visible, whitish agglomerates. It is a
very common scalp condition, which
can lead to important aesthetical
and social issues.
Though thoroughly researched for
many years, it is still not possible to
clearly identify the causes triggering
dandruff. However, it has been
confirmed that aggressive cleansing
products, individual proneness of

Seborrheic dermatitis - Each

However, the secretion of sebum
