Campers enjoy swimming the year-round in the camp pools. Camp Courageous is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization run on donations serving individuals of all ages with disabilities. For more information on how you can contribute, volunteer, or for other ways to help, see page 39. “…because we’re more alike than we are different.” Included in this issue: PMCI Convention..................Page 4 Pineapple Gala on Aug. 16....Page 6 Cruisin’ on May 18................Page 9 Tom & Nan Riley Train.......Page 10 How you can help................Page 39 …and so much more! Omelet Breakfast & Open House is Sunday, April 27, 2008 • More info on Page 11. expansion Camp Courageous doubles in size with the addition of 80 acres to meet a growing need At a recent strategic planning session of the Board of Directors of Camp Courageous, the #1 focus for the future was to meet the growing needs of campers and their families. The camp has quickly grown from a summer camp to a year-round camp, and from no waiting lists to attend camp, to substantial waiting lists for each week-long session. Currently the number of campers wanting to come to camp is far greater than the number of spaces available. Weeklong sessions for the next year are booked within minutes of the first hour of registration. The plan will be to expand Camp Courageous without 2 compromising the quality of the camp's program (program meaning everything from dietary, medical, activities, facilities, equipment, etc.). Camp Courageous is currently completing construction of the Beckwith Dormitory to accommodate more year-round staff in a quality facility. With the new land addition, camp is looking for opportunities to grow the number of campers served and activities. This new acreage sits at the SE intersection of Highway 38 and the road that leads to Camp Courageous. Due to the fact that this land was purchased at an estate auction, Camp Courageous did not have the opportunity to raise the money for the land in advance... which is camp’s normal procedure. Historically, a full and clear title to the 40 acres where the base camp lies came from the Tait Cummins’ Memorial Fund in 1984. The 30 acres to the South of base camp and first-right-of-refusal to the farm west of camp was made possible by Bill and Kay Pitlik. And the 10 acres of land, adjacent to the road leading to camp where staff and camp’s horse program is located was donated by Charlie and Tina Weepie. Camp is now seeking a donor for naming rights to the very first impression the public will have of Camp Courageous. Camp is currently reviewing opportunities to develop this land to include a lake, forest, and numerous camper activities... along with the possibility of increased camper housing. The naming rights for this additional nearly 80 acres is $300,000. Anyone who may be interested in discussing this should contact: Charlie Becker 319/465-5916 ext 2100 or cbecker@ campcourageous.org. APRIL 2008 — Camp Courageous of Iowa — www.campcourageous.org SPRING BREAK ‘08 Hundreds of campers enjoyed activities at Camp Courageous during the annual Spring Break Bash. Area special education classes came from all over the area to enjoy swimming, archery, snow activities, arts and crafts, dancing, and so much more! Camp Courageous of Iowa courier newsletter Published quarterly (January, April, July, and October) by Camp Courageous of Iowa, a non-profit, year-round recreational and respite care facility for individuals with disabilities that is run on donations. Dawn is a wonderful person and a leader for PMCI, and Dave is a person who wears his heart on his sleeve and his heart is huge! Great organization that pulled camp out of some of its roughest days. A big thank you to the Board of Directors of the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa for continuing to take Camp Courageous under their wing for the 27th year! The main speaker for the Association’s Prayer Breakfast was (L) Charlie Whittmack, the first Iowan to climb Mt. Everest. He gave an exceptional presentation and looks forward to doing things for Camp Courageous in the future. (L-R) Pat Becker (Camp Courageous), Speed Herrig (Cookie’s Bar-B-Que Sauce), and Jorge Ann Swinford (Iowa Automoble Dealers Association) share some laughs at their booths at the PMCI Convention. Wherever Speed is, there are smiles and happiness. We are grateful to all three of these great camp supporters and wish Jorge Ann the very best in all her future endeavors! Special thank you to Dave Bell and Spec Cast in Dyersville for donating 300 1964 Dodge Vans with the Camp Courageous logo and the PMCI logo on the vehicles. These are sold by the board of PMCI to its membership. 4 It was a treat to visit with Dan Pomranke, a long time supporter of Camp Courageous at the PMCI Convention in Des Moines. It was through his support that his daughter, Angela Pomranke, heard about camp and organized several Home Depot Stores to spend a day of work at camp. Angela’s parents decided to donate toward the purchase of a Wii for the camp (see page 32). Angela writes, “My parents taught me well when I was young to give when you can and find a cause that means a lot to you and touches your heart. I believe in every thing Camp Courageous does for not only the campers, but each and every one of us. I hope that this will help make the purchase of a Wii happen. For everything you do every day to help the campers and to encourage us all.” What an incredible family! Here is a group of former WMT employees who gathered the day after Louise Greco’s death. It was a fun night reminiscing about the old days. Great personalities that brought so much joy into the lives of so many! (L-R back)Jim Wetherbee, Connie Switzer, Bobbie Bowman, Barb Kouba, Jerry Passer, Larry Edwards, Sharon Reeves, Gary Kouba, Nancy Koestner, Kevin Carizzo, Mike Swanson, Sara Carizzo, and Doug Wagner. (Front L-R sitting) Mary Ann Wetherbee, Eileen Loan (Schmidt), Pat Nielson (Carr), Jim Dalton, and Dwayne Schmidt. An absolutely wonderful family. (L) Cletus Kremer and Becky Melchert hold up Mabel Kremer’s beautiful quilt with crossstitched roses on it. 93-year-old Mabel, sitting, spent about 20-years off and on making this beautiful piece. It will be up for auction at this year’s Pineapple Gala in August. Mabel is holding a plaque that will be placed on room #101 of the new dorm. Mabel was the first to buy a room for the new Beckwith Dormitory. Mabel has been very supportive of camp for years, and that tradition has flowed through to her children! Here is a super family… the Bolte Family. (L-R) Barb Burroughs, Don Marple, Laurie Marple, David Bolte, and Albert Bolte. They visited camp and delivered memorials for Ora Mae Bolte that went to the camp’s perpetual fund. We enjoyed having Ora Mae and Albert on the camp’s trip to Branson… great couple! Everyone affiliated with Camp Courageous mourns the death of Louise Greco. She was the centerpiece of a family that comes right out of a Norman Rockwell painting of the ideal family. Known to some as the “L Grecos”; Louise was a wonderful and supportive wife to her husband, Leo for 62-years. She was the perfect mother and grandmother to Larry (Judy) Greco of Solon and children, Benjamin (Jenny) Greco of Champaign, IL, and Andrew (Sandra) Greco of Cedar Rapids; Linda (Michael) Greco-Sanders of Denver; CO, Lou Ann (Frank) Heng of Willmar, MN and children, Dan and Kati; Lisa (Jeff) Rehman of Cedar Rapids and children Alex and Leo; and Lance (Liesa) Greco of Cedar Rapids and children Callista, Gabriel, and Asa. Her understanding and patience have been invaluable gifts and lessons for all. Louise was truly a lady. She was gentle, caring and so very sweet. She was the pillar of strength in the Greco family. We have been blessed to have known her. Leo’s Little Red Wagon is full of a lifetime of wonderful memories of her. I will personally miss the wonderful smells that came from Louise’s kitchen. A kitchen full of a variety of Christmas cookies waiting to cool. A little bag full of cookies for the road… just in case I got hungry. “The epitome of love, Louise’s life was one of total devotion to her husband and family. Countless people were fortunate to receive the warmth she served around her kitchen table. Nana to her grandchildren, hugs, kisses, and chocolate oatmeal cookies were but a few of the ways she showed her love.” The many memorials that came to Camp Courageous in Louise’s memory shows the many people she touched. — Charlie The Stanwood Lions had an incredible outpouring for Camp Courageous at a recent meeting. We thank Connie Inman for inviting Camp Courageous to give a program to them. This group includes new board member Merlin Hulse. Marginal Note: Having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. 7 A Chance to Include All Campers! In an effort to give campers an opportunity to participate in more adventures, Camp Courageous would like to acquire several more Tumble Forms for campers like Hannah Soyer, age 12 (above) the opportunity to participate in more of camp’s adventure activities. Hannah has been coming to Camp Courageous during Muscular Dystrophy Week for three years. Because she is in need of extra support for her head and neck, she had not been able to participate in any of camp’s climbing activities prior to this past summer. We were very lucky to have had this Tumble Form that Hannah is using donated. As shown in the picture, the Tumble Form gives that extra support to Hannah’s head and neck while she is hoisted up in a sling for her first climbing activity at camp. Looking at the smile on Hannah’s face shows just how great an experience she was given. You, too, can give similar opportunities to other special campers by donating Tumble Forms of any or every size. Chicago Urban Bicyclists Society Wins Award for Camp Benefits The C.U.B.S. (Chicago Urban Bicycle Society) received the Rider Cup Award from RAGBRAI for their outstanding good they do while on the ride. This super group drove from Chicago to receive their award. We can’t thank the C.U.B.S. enough for their support which has included a new dorm room, a donation to the pool project, and a specially designed tandem bike. A special thank you to Jerry Turry, who was not able to attend, but is the “leader of the pack”. T.j. Juskiewicz (far L) and Dan McKay (far R) present the award to C.U.B.S. members (L-R) Dana Nelson, Brad Prendergast, Mike Conklin, and Steve Isaacson. Charlie, I am one of the crowd of CUBS you met during RAGBRAI for the past two years. The Santa Claus cover photo on your [January] Courier newsletter perfectly captures everything I know and believe about the great work Camp Courageous does. All of your staff does a fantastic job, but special kudos to the photographer who caught that picture and the editor who decided to use it. A color copy is posted on my door at Michigan State Law School. Hope to see you again this July. Best wishes and congratulations to all at Camp Courageous. Professor Bruce W. Bean Michigan St. Univ. What a super group! A special thank you to Brenda Hall who delivered them to the camp on her way to do volunteer work in Dubuque. 8 (L-R) Jeff and Judy Miller of Davenport, along with Pastor Todd Hunter, hold boxes that St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 1915 W. Kimbery Rd in Davenport will be collecting donations for camp during Lent. Camp is grateful to them for giving camp the opportunity to present the camp story to their congregation during their two Sunday services. Jeff & Judy Miller have been active with camp personally and through Home Hardware in Davenport. They do everything from collect donations to selling fruitcakes. Many from the congregation have tie-ins with camp, through being special education teachers and bringing campers to camp to parents of campers. Special thank you to Sheila Thorberg for giving camp this opportunity. Great Congregation! Students reviewed the train equipment at Riley’s home. Several trips have been made by the students to make sure that all aspects of the train’s system are considered. All Aboard! Camp Train Project Starts d Tom & Nan Riley donated a train that is ready to be loaded and brought to camp to thrill thousands of campers! This spring will be a very busy one to install the track, depot, etc. Many camp and/or train enthusiasts have asked, how can we help? We will have workdays come spring to lay the track and build the depot, which will also serve as the garage for the train. There will be professionals building a special railcar designed by Iowa State University Mechanical Engineering students to accommodate the many needs of Camp Courageous campers. Lynn Kobliska, who works in Washington DC and has roots in Waterloo, IA is coordinating the project. Jim Heise of Iowa State University’s Dept. of Mechanical Engineering is coordinating Iowa State University’s role. Here are ways you can help: I would like to volunteer. This award has been 2-decades coming. The award had been on my desk for about 5-years and every time I thought I had Randy cornered he got away… so thank you to volunteer board member, Jim Zimmerman (L) for presenting it to Randy. During camp’s most challenging times Randy Brokaw was always there for the camp… going back to the first years of the camp. He was instrumental in obtaining the camp’s first walk-in freezer and cooler… and 30+years later, camp is still using them. My most memorable story was about 27-years ago when maintenance volunteer Clete Goedken had an urge in the middle of a winter’s night that something was wrong at camp… so he drove out and found water pouring out of a camper cabin door. He called me, and I called volunteer Randy Brokaw. A pipe had burst and Randy made me promise him not to tell anyone (statue of limitations has expired), he took every spare angle and pipe he could find to make it work… it wasn’t a straight line, but it worked. During camp’s most challenging times, Randy was always there for camp… for which we will be forever grateful. — Charlie It was great to have Dubuque Allen Chapter visit camp in February. The group have been very supportive of the camp over the years. Camp experiences its largest snow in decades! (L-R) Camper Casey Rooney with G&G Living Center in of Guttenburg, IA is pictured with counselor Annie Chapman of Sydney, Australia during an evening activity in the camp’s gym. This was Casey’s first visit to Camp Courageous. 12 (R-L) Counselor Jess Maier of Palms, MI helps camper Susie Schultz of Guttenburg, IA during an afternoon activity in the lodge. Susie has been coming to camp each year since 2002. It was great to have her back again! Honorary Board Member Be Vermazen Passes Camp Courageous was blessed to have Be Vermazen as a hard working and dedicated Manchester Garage Sale Worker (Camp’s largest fund raiser). And if it wasn’t for Be and her husband, John, stepping forward, Camp Courageous may never have had the beautiful indoor pool we have today. “Be” watched the camp grow from 211 special campers served to over 5,000 campers today. Be died within days of Louise Greco, another beautiful lady. John and Leo Greco shared a lot in common from their work with Kent Feed to Camp Courageous; as did Be and Louise. Be’s memory will live on forever here at Camp Courageous. Our sincerest sympathy to John and his family, — Charlie Wondering what to do with some of your spare time? The Maintenance department at Camp Courageous is always looking for a helping hand. Whether it be working on an electrical project, fixing a plumbing problem, or just helping out with some outdoor projects, like cutting grass and caring for flowers. 2007 is gone and 2008 is here with even more projects than one could imagine. If you would like to learn more about helping out contact Greg Boheman, Maintenance Director at 319-465-5916 ext. 2500. APRIL 2008 — Camp Courageous of Iowa — www.campcourageous.org Thank You! Manchester Garage Sale The 33rd annual Manchester Garage Sale for Camp Courageous is about to get underway. Just as Camp Courageous has grown from 211 campers during the summer of 1974 to over 5,000 campers year-round today, so has the growth of the Manchester Garage Sale. The Manchester Garage Sale, Camp Courageous’ largest fund raiser, is run by over 60 volunteers. From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, for six months out of the year, these volunteers give of their time to run the sale located at 913 East Main, in Manchester. The sale will open Monday, April 28th and will remain open until about the first week in October. For the six months following the sale, volunteers work on Manchester the facilities, constantly making improvements. The Manchester Garage Sale has been a win-win situation. People who have donated their personal items to the sale have had the opportunity to clean house, knowing their things will go for good use. The buyer has the opportunity to get needed items at a very reasonable price, and the camp has obtained items it needs, along with much needed financial support the camp needs, since the camp is run on donations. The Garage Sale is led by a very dedicated committee. For these ladies the sale goes yearround, as they are constantly gathering things, washing and mending items, and doing whatever they can for the betterment of Camp Courageous. The committee includes, Marla Schiess, Honorary Board Member Jackie Snyder, and Vera Gienapp. 13 W. Main St 210th St Tracks Railroad N. Franklin Street M. “Augie” Zieser, Yvonne L. APRIL 2008 — Camp Courageous of Iowa — www.campcourageous.org Valentines Dance Enjoyed by Many Camp Courageous hosted the annual Valentines Dance on Saturday, February 8, 2008. Many came out to enjoy a great evening of dancing and refreshments. Contests were held during the dance and many campers walked away with fabulous prizes. Thanks to everyone who attended! For more information on free special events for campers held at Camp Courageous you can contact Stephen Fasnacht by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 319-465-5916, ext. 2310. A group of 15 Camp Courageous supporters played golf recently at the Sawgrass Golf resort in Florida with the Jay-Lynn-O Tours group. Pictured on the famous 17th green at Sawgrass is (L-R) Rick Beymer, Ron Beymer, Steve Roe, and Jay Watson . Jay and Ron graciously put together this trip. The rest of the group included Bob Shafer, Tom Kelly, Collus Lawhead, Bruce Hutton, Steve Fetty, Gary Bailey, Larry Teply, Jon Sobotka, Paul Riordan, Randy McDonnell, and Frank Gunsolley. This group has been long-time supporters of camp that does a lot of good, while enjoying their golf. Congratulations to Josh Brenneman and Amanda Gaworski, camp’s assistant Nursing Director, on their engagement and approaching marriage. They are a wonderful couple and the camp is gifted to have their talents. Marginal Note: Anyone who never made a mistake never tried anything new. Happy 80th birthday to Ethel Craig! Ethel was among the camp’s first campers! Many wonderful memories. She is a sweetheart! 29 Camper Adventure Program Needs Canoes Camp Courageous camper t-shirts will display the AgVantage FS symbol. We are grateful for their year-round help at the camp and for sponsoring the t-shirt program. Here (L-R) Scott Waskow, Marketing Manager and Mark Thomas, Sale Person presents a check to cover a good share of the t-shirt program. Congratulations to Marion Wal-Mart and Associates! The canoeing program is a very important part of our summer and fall adventure programs at Camp Courageous. We currently have 17 foot aluminum canoes that are nearing the point of retirement and we are in need of suitable replacements. Camp’s canoes are heavy in weight, and our aim is to get new or slightly used canoes that are made with alternative materials that are durable and lightweight. This would make transferring to and from trailers easier and safer. After researching several canoe materials, there are Camp congratulates this store and associates on being named Supercenter of the Year! What an incredible distinction and honor, not only to them... but the whole area prides itself, that right here in our own backyard is the #1 Wal-Mart Supercenter of the year! This is an honor we feel is super deserved. They not only run a top-notch operation, they have a dedicated and caring staff that genuinely care about the well being of others. They have demonstrated on numerous occasions how they give back to the community, not only monetary, but also in time and talents. (L-R) Tom Eggleston, camp’s super volunteer presents Scott Niernberger, Store Manager of Wal-Mart Store #3630 Marion a beautiful framed acknowledgement of this store being Super Center Store of the Year 2007. Tom has worked closely with Joanne Heath, Assistant Manager on many camp projects. 30 William and Barbara Catlett and families of Monticello decided instead of holiday gifts this year to donate paper products , cleaning supplies, arts and crafts items and food items for camp. Shown is William with their generous donation. Many thanks to William, Lois and their wonderful families. two that would be suitable for our canoe program. Aluminum Alloy is even stronger than aluminum, and lighter in weight. Kelvar is an extra durable material that is also lightweight. Aluminum Alloy canoes can run anywhere from $600 to $1400. Kelvar canoes can run from $2000 to $3000. Camp would like to keep the 17 foot length in order to comfortably and safely transport two campers and a counselor on trips down the river or on the lake. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Chuck Beard with the Ankeny Knights of Columbus Council presents volunteer Gloria Ford with a portion of the proceeds from their annual Tootsie Roll Drive. Many thanks to Chuck and the Ankeny Knights for inviting camp and for their hospitality. What a wonderful organization! Nearly 200 people enjoyed a wonderful evening. Y Dear Sharon, I thought I would let you know that Harlan and I had a delightful time at the Valentine dinner. The atmosphere was very special, the food was delicious (and nicely served), and Jim McDonough was outstanding. It was nice that Harlan won a box of candy in the drawing! I hope you have this event next year. Be sure to include us with your ticket sales. Sharon Roller, Valentine event coordinator, Jim McDonough, concert pianist, and Chef Dennis Bayne provided a fun-filled unique experience for nearly 200 guests. Sincerely, Carol Helgens Hi Sharon and Committee, What a delightful evening on Valentines day!! Our table enjoyed the time to talk together in such a beautiful setting, fine dining, and wonderfully relaxing music. Thank you for all your hard work—it did make all of us feel really special!:) Brent and Linda Barnett Ruth Jacobson and Phyllis Brook and Tony Goodson Brenda Rawson and Jeff Welty Dr. Ken and Donna Paulsen, Gene and Lucy Smith, Frank and Rosie Bowers, Glen and Linda Miller all from Cedar Rapids enjoy an elegant four-course dining during the Valentine evening event. Mark your calendar for next year’s event on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 for “An Evening in Paris”. We would be delighted to have YOU as a guest!! Contact Sharon Roller (Extension 2200) to make your reservation. New Wii Game Console Provides New Activity: Video Games requiring Physical Movement Adrian Dickey of Packwood made the camp’s winter season come alive! He did a great job of getting the entire staff and campers excited! When UPS delivered Adrian’s wonderful gift of a Wii, with all kinds of extras such as a sports package, High School Musical, etc. The staff was quick to hook it up in the main lodge where there is a lot of room to move around. What an incredible addition to the camp! Unlike other game consoles where you sit and play, the Wii makes the players physically move about. This physical action has been proven to be therapeutic fun for many users. We can't thank Adrian enough! Adrian is the son of Dave & Judy Dickey of Packwood, and all his parents wonderful attributes were passed on to their children. A family that doesn’t come any better. 32 Shower Chairs Needed for Swim Program The swimming program at Camp Courageous is well known and increasing in popularity. There are several people that need the assistance of a shower chair to give them safe and smooth access to the pool. These chairs are used often and it is nearing the time to replace a few of them. Camp needs chairs that are 22 to 26 inches wide to fit safely down the accessible ramp into the pool. They must also have an adjustable seat belt. Shower chairs like this can range from $300 to $600. Camp would like to replace five of the shower chairs that are currently in use. Any donations towards new chairs, or of the actual chairs would be greatly appreciated. Shower chairs have many uses at the camp. One use is to safely get campers in and out of the camp’s indoor pool. NEW AUCTION ITEM FOR PINEAPPLE GALA Up for auction at the 30th Annual Pineapple Gala will be a new auction item thanks to Herb & Janice Wilson of Iowa City… a week-long stay at a time share at Florida’s Premier Orange Lake Country Club in Kissimmee, Florida! A great group, that is like family and will give the shirt off their backs to help camp. Special thank you to Fran DeMarce for the invitation and President Ken DeMarce! Nearly 100 Cases of Food donated through the 2008 Cases 4 Camp!!! Camp Courageous would like to thank area Fareway Stores and the donors of nearly 100 cases of food products during the Cases for Camp project. John Machart and Larry Driscoll from the Anamosa Knights of Columbus Council #1791 presents a check to Camp Courageous from their Tootsie Roll Drive. Camp truly appreciates their generosity. Marginal Note: Remember the three R’s—respect for self, respect for others, responsibility for your actions. 33 Archery a Favorite Activity Among Campers Camp Courageous’ archery program has always been a favorite activity among campers. For many, this is an opportunity to experience archery for the first time. And for some, their week at camp is their only chance to try and score that elusive “bull’s eye”. Many people do not know that shooting sports like archery offer many benefits to participants regardless of ability level. Each specific shooting sport can be adapted to fit the ability level. Studies have also shown that shooting sports helps people improve hand eye coordination, patience, and self esteem. They have also shown that with adapted equipment and regular use, shooting sports can help people with disabilities strengthen their current abilities and unlock abilities they did not have the use of normally. Before first starting here in 2003, I had worked for ten summers as a shooting instructor for the Boy Scouts. In graduate school, I focused my thesis on how the use of shooting sports can benefit people with disabilities. I have had no better sense of fulfillment at Camp Courageous when I see a camper who comes to the shooting range nervous and unsure of themselves leave with a sense of joy and accomplishment when they pop a balloon, knock over a reactive target, or stick an arrow in a bull’s eye. Since the camp runs on donations, it sometimes becomes difficult to have specific archery equipment donated. When we do receive an archery donation, like all donations it is very much appreciated. But sometimes campers are unable to use the equipment because it is too difficult for them. Many of our staff have limited backgrounds in shooting sports. Like our campers, they are experiencing it for the first time but are required to be instructors. This can cause some nervousness for the staff as well. To solve these problems and to make archery more available to our campers and staff we are redesigning our archery program. A complete listing of the equipment we are looking for is located in this issue’s Needs List section. Once we have these new donations, the staff will be able to instruct and assist campers better because all of the bows, arrows, and other equipment will be the same. The campers will be more successful with archery because of the same reasons. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the organizations that have donated to our archery program through equipment donations and informational support. Camp Courageous was grateful (L-R) Justin Pillard (Quality Supervisor) and Greg Bell (Plant Manager) from Exide Technologies in Manchester for their donation of batteries for the camp’s generators and power wheelchairs. Excide has been wonderful supporters of camp for years. Special thanks to Gerry Rohr for coordinating the pick-up of this donation. Aimee Hospodarsky and her son, Grant, present boxes of much needed items collected by the Area 10 School Counselors. We are grateful to them for thinking of camp with this wonderful collection of items. APRIL 2008 — Camp Courageous of Iowa — www.campcourageous.org Camp Courageous Remembers Friends that Have Passed Cruisin' For Camp Courageous will never be the same without Steve Davis's smiling face greeting and working the show. Steve touched more lives than he would have ever realized... he certainly was a big part of the growth and success of Camp Courageous over the years. He will be dearly missed. We are fortunate in life when we can meet a person that it is a true joy to share your life with. Sharon and Steve seemed to glow with that type of relationship. Our sympathy goes out to Sharon and family. We were sad to hear of the passing of a wonderful volunteer, Nancy Smith. I first met Nancy in 2006 when she came with her husband, Dennis, for a week. Dennis worked in maintenance and Nancy helped out in the kitchen. Nancy was a huge help to the kitchen staff. Nancy came back the next year, even though she and Dennis had to come separate weeks due to their busy schedules. We will greatly miss Nancy and her sense of humor this summer. Our deepest sympathies go to Dennis and the rest of Nancy’s family. Jean Speck - Camp Courageous was saddened to learn of the death of camp supporter, Jean Speck of Huston TX. Jean was the sister to the one of most wonderful lady’s I have ever known, the late Hank Bahl of Jesup. Hank (Henrietta) was the wife of Honorary Board Member Norb Bahl. Camp’s sympathy goes out to Mike Speck, Norb Bahl and their families. Mary C. Paramater - Camp is grateful to the Mary C. Paramater Estate which left a significant donation to the camp’s perpetual fund. Through the generosity of Mary, the money given will be invested and provide support to the camp for many years to come. Camper Melvin Lowery was a Camp Courageous classic. He could quickly light up a room when he arrived. Always caring, always good hearted, always thinking of others. One of our last times out was a Sunday morning. He quickly asked, is it alright to bring a friend. After breakfast and a time at WMT watching “his good friend” Leo Greco do his Sunday morning show, we did a little shopping. Melvin quickly asked if it was ok to buy some things for some of his friends at the Abbe Center... always thinking of others, particularly his Abbe Center Family. Melvin touched the lives of more people than he ever realized. He brought happiness and joy to so many of us. He will be dearly missed by all his friends at Camp Courageous, the Abbe Center, and all those who had the opportunity to meet him. Linda Peterson was a spark that ignited volunteerism and who could say no to Linda. Linda had a passion for helping anyone in general, but children with special needs in particular. She leaves a legacy of what a huge difference one person can make. Her spark will be dearly missed. Our sympathy goes out to Steve and family. Camp’s heart was saddened with the death of Joe Hernandez. Joe and his wife, Kathleen are parents of camper Matt Hernandez. They have been active with Camp Courageous since the start. Close friends of Tait and Dotty Cummins, Joe always approached work with a big smile and was the kindest person one could ever meet. From selling pineapples to fruitcakes and everything in between. They believed in camp and wanted Matt to enjoy camp to its fullest. A wonderful family. Camp’s sympathy goes out to Kathleen, Matt, and Joe’s daughter, Mary. Camp says goodbye to another member of our WMT Family. Bill Alford is best remembered for his 24-years with WMT AM/FM/TV as a popular farm broadcaster and farm editor. Bill is a member of the very select WMT Radio Hall of Fame. A wonderful personality, Bill and his wife, Marilyn (of 57-years) were always there to help the camp whenever they could. They were very close to the the Cummins Family and participated in many camp events from pineapples to bridge. Our sympathy goes out to Bill's Family. Camp was saddened to learn of the death of long time camper Jane Williams of Independence/Waterloo. Jane started coming to camp, about the time camp started and it was always a treat to see her year after year. She loved coming to camp and camp loved having her. Camp’s sympathy goes out to her wonderful mother, Geraldine of Independence; two sisters, Janet Pananos of Kenner, La., and Jeannie Williams of Madison, Wis.; and a brother, John Williams of Parnell. We will dearly miss Jane. Camp is grateful to so many of you who have given gifts in memory of loved ones. If you would like to have your donation made in memory of someone please send the name along with your donation. The camp will send an acknowledgment about your gift if you provide a name and address. It is in the memory of your loved ones that we dedicate ourselves to doing all that is within our abilities to bring true happiness to the campers served. Marginal Note: When it seems you can’t forgive, remember how much you have been forgiven. Thank you to the employees at Rockwell Collins for their current “Rolls for Relief” program. They are collecting a HUGE donation of toilet paper for use at the camp. Pictured above is a part of the contest materials used for the project. Special thank you to Mary Johnson for getting the camp involved with this program. 35 A big thank you to those, pictured above, who went on the 2007 Branson Christmas Getaway. A group of super camp supporters! The 10th Anniversary of the Camp’s Branson Trips will November 17-20, 2008. Be watching for a 2009 trip to Alaska! For more information contact Jean Rogers at Destinations Unlimited. Curt Olson of Cascade has passed away… our sympathy to Gael and the family. Curt was 48-years in the telephone industry. Curt supplied camp with whatever telephone items the camp needed and was always there for the camp. Curt’s daughter, Sarah, was a camp counselor. Curt will be dearly missed…. My dad passed away unexpectedly this year, and I saw Charlie Becker at his funeral. I hadn’t seen Charlie since I worked for him when I was 19, which would have been 1982. When I saw Charlie, pleasant memories reminded me of my time at Camp Courageous. I talked to Charlie after the service and told him I would like to write something for the Camp Courageous periodical about two major influences on my life, my dad, Curtis Duane Olson, and Camp Courageous. As I sat to write this, I thought of the things that Dad and Camp Courageous had in common. The first thought is that they both require hard work. My Dad always taught us to do the right thing, be honest, and work hard. He really emphasized the work hard and we did. And Dad didn’t like to work alone so if he had something to do, you better find something to do or you would be helping him. Camp Courageous is a great place full of wonderful, caring people who are truly there for the campers because as I found out, it wasn’t for the money. We didn’t make very much. They really want the campers to 36 have a great experience while their daily caretakers get a well-deserved break. The counselors work hard every day, and get little time off – and they do it all with a smile on their face because they know they are making someone’s life better. The second thought I had was strength. Those of you who knew my dad, know that he was a big man with enormous strength. He helped me replace skirting around my mobile home when I lived out in the country. The wooden skirting was nailed to wooden spikes which were dug into the ground. I was using a claw hammer to dig the nails out to get the skirting off and was slipping on the ground, as it was ice and snow covered. Dad walked up behind me and grabbed the wooden plank and yanked it away from the spikes. I wasn’t a weak person and when I tried that, I kissed the ground once more. But Dad taught me how to use my strength which I would need when I worked at Camp Courageous. As a counselor, I used that strength to push wheel chairs up hills and through the woods, help campers in and out of bed, the pool, chairs, etc. and to lug camping equipment from campsite to campsite. The last thought I had was about how both Dad and Camp Courageous pushed me to be a better person. I grew up believing that if I didn’t do well in school, that all I could ever do would be digging ditches, which drove visions of the chain gangs in Cool Hand Luke to a young girls mind. Every time I brought home “bad” grade (which for Dad was a C or anything under), I was asked if I wanted to be a ditch digger all my life. That was the last C on my report card. Working at Camp Courageous taught me how grateful I should be for all the things I take for granted, like walking without help, being able to run and jump, simple things we don’t take the time to think about until we can’t do them anymore. The campers at Camp Courageous taught me how to laugh at myself and not worry so much on how you look but what you feel inside, and that every day is a good day. Although my Dad’s death was a shock and tremendous blow, I feel very fortunate that I had an opportunity to spend so much time with him this past year working on my house and moving. I also feel fortunate that I was able to work for Camp Courageous for a brief time that ultimately changed my life. On those hard days when bosses are screaming for things, kids are calling and overall life is not going the way I want it, I remember that every day is a good day. — Sarah Olson Davis APRIL 2008 — Camp Courageous of Iowa — www.campcourageous.org Parrot Head Club Continues Support of Camp The Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club was organized in April of 1997, and is an official member of Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. Their main purpose is to gather like-minded people in the appreciation of the music of Jimmy Buffett, and the tropical and laid back lifestyle it conveys. Perhaps the easiest way to sum up the Parrot Head Mantra is that it's OK to be a kid, no matter what your age, even if it may only be for just a while on weekends!! Their club has been steadily growing since its inception, and now has just over 200 members of all ages and backgrounds. Their membership not only hails from the Cedar Rapids/ Iowa City area, but they also have members from all over the state of Iowa as well as out of state. (L-R) Having a great time during an evening dance in the camp’s lodge are camper Michelle Cooper of Prairie Du Chien, WI, camper Rhonda Koslofsky of Maquoketa, IA, counselor Amanda Erwin of Evergreen, CO, and counselor Amy Daniels of Wild Rose, WI. Marginal Note: One of the nicest things about life is the way we regularly stop whatever we are doing and devote our attention to eating. 37 The snow is going away and the grass will be growing soon. We are looking for some people that enjoy being outdoors to help us with the mowing this year. If your talents are more in the flower side, then there is a job for you, too. Camp will also be looking for groups to come out and spruce up flower beds again this year. If you have an extra plant or two get your friends together and come out for a nice relaxing day. Program Specialists Dormitory Plaque Needs List (Page 5) Camp Courageous appreciates all donations of items that can be used at the camp. You can view the camp’s needs list in this newsletter. You can also view an updated list on the camp’s web site at www.campcourageous.org. Currently staff is housed in a somewhat primitive dormitory situation. It is the goal of the camp to build a facility that will house 20 year-round program staff, where each staff person will have their own room, with their own bathroom, desk, bed, and more. Often times staff, when on cabin duty, can be up for over 24 hours. When rest is so important, being in your own room makes a world of difference. You can help with this project by purchasing a plaque for $1,000. Your name, or the wording of your choice, will appear on the plaque in the dorm. Use the donation form on the back page of this newsletter. For more information about the plaques you can contact Charlie Becker at (319) 465-5916, ext. 2100, or send him E-mail at charlie@ campcourageous.org. Pool Blocks The Camp Courageous indoor pool was built one block at a time. Over the past few years it has become one of the more popular activities for the campers. You can help support this activity by buying a pool block for $1,000. Your name, or the wording of your choice, will be put on the block as a lasting reminder of your gift to the camp. Use the donation form on the back page of this newsletter to purchase your pool block. For more information about the pool blocks you can contact Charlie Becker at (319) 465-5916, ext. 2100, or send E-mail to [email protected]. Where is Camp Courageous located? IOW After 33 years, Camp Courageous continues to operate on donations, without government assistance, without formal sponsorship, and without paid fund-raisers. What this means is that everything that is given to the Camp, goes directly to benefit the campers. One of the reasons the Camp has grown from serving 211 campers in 1974 to over 5,000 campers today, is the incredible dedication of volunteers. Volunteer help is needed in virtually every aspect of the camp. Please consider volunteering your time and talents to Camp Courageous. ILL How can I help?
