But we’re starting to see some positive signs as our struggling economy gains some momentum. We have been saying that West Chester and Liberty are positioned nicely for continued growth once the economy started to improve, and we’re seeing proof of that today. Though slower than we would like – national economic growth has averaged 2.2% a year for the past four years, our landscape is changing with more frequent announcements of coming attractions. Newsworthy commercial development is occurring throughout West Chester and Liberty Townships as we begin 2014. Some of our larger projects include; • The KB Hotel Group - slated to open a 125-room Hilton Garden Inn this summer on Schulze Drive. • Liberty Center - 1.1 million square foot mixed use development located at Liberty Way and I-75. It’s under construction and projected to open by the fall of 2015. • UC Health West Chester Hospital - announced plans for a $135 million dollar expansion project which includes adding a second tower to its hospital scheduled to be completed within the next two to three years. • Tri Health’s Group Health Associates – physicians practice which has broken ground on a 50,000 square foot medical office building on State Route 747 scheduled to open this fall. • Butler Tech - announced plans for the construction of a Bioscience Training Facility located at I-75 and Cincinnati-Dayton Road to open late summer 2015. Visit www.butlertech.org to view a video on this project. • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Liberty Campus - adding 28 beds to a 4th floor addition that will open in 2015. Also constructing a proton therapy research center that will take three years to complete. • Bass Pro Shops - constructing a 150,000 square foot facility off Allen Road to include an Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill, a nautical-themed venue for entertainment and dining, plus a 12 lane bowling alley, set to open in 2015. The housing market has finally started to rebound both in terms of new construction and pricing. Going forward, the most important factor may be the continuing improvement in the housing sector. Improving existing home prices and recovering home values are paramount to underpinning consumption and getting the economy back on track…and a few more jobs in the homebuilding sector wouldn’t hurt either. The bottom line is this…positive factors at work in our economy should continue to accelerate growth. The string of activity from the aforementioned projects will create the domino effect and spurn additional development opportunities in both of our Townships and along the I-75 Growth Corridor. West Chester and Liberty continue to be the epicenter of business activity in our Tri-State Region. By making a commitment to be more active in our Chamber in 2014 you too will benefit from this additional business activity. • Thank you for being a valued member of the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance. Happy New Year to you and your family! February 2014 | THE VOICE 5 SPOTLIGHT on Clark Schaefer Hackett Process innovation embraced by accounting firm Clark Schaefer Hackett There’s an organization in town that’s undertaken the Lean Six Sigma methodology to become more efficient and effective. And surprisingly, it’s…an accounting firm. It is this commitment to excellence that has made Clark Schaefer Hackett an industry leader. Starting with a small office in 1938 in Middletown, Virgil Clark built his single-proprietor office into the $50 million firm it is today. Customarily employed at manufacturing companies, Lean Six Sigma is a rigorous, time-intensive, process-improvement tool. Its application is almost unheard of in the professional service industry. Two of the six offices are local, with one in Cincinnati and one in Dayton. For more information, visit www.cshco.com. But improving quality is a hallmark at Clark Schaefer Hackett, an accounting firm with six Ohio offices that specializes in audits, taxes and consulting. So it’s no surprise that this organization would be on the cutting edge of process innovation. Arin Singer-Bonk The firm’s tax group is recognized for its proactive advisement, as CSH associates work with their clients to strategically position them for tax efficiency. Of course, CSH tax professionals also complete compliance work such as tax returns. And it’s in this area that the firm applied the innovative concept of translating Lean Six Sigma from the factory floor to the accounting firm desktop. Follow the West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance Venue Lifestyle and Event Guide Like us on Facebook Last fall, with the help of a Lean Six Sigma black belt, the firm closely examined the process it uses to complete business tax returns, and it noticed some inefficiencies. In response, CSH spent the time necessary to strategically streamline and standardize its practice across all offices, eliminating wasted time and effort. February 2014 | THE VOICE 9 January Luncheon Recap Chambernomics Wouldn’t it be wonderful for our businesses if we had a crystal ball that could peek into the region’s economic future? At The Chamber Alliance’s annual “Chambernomics” luncheon, Dr. Julie Heath, Director of the Economics Center at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati, disavowed us all of that possibility. Her first PowerPoint slide, a twisted, knotted purple line graph, represented just “how good we’re getting at predicting the economy,” she joked. And yet, Dr. Heath’s clear, data-driven examination of current economic indicators did indeed shine a light on how recent trends might impact future experience. With a teacher’s skill, she made complicated graphs and information-packed tables tell an understandable story. SPEAKER - Julie Heath, Carl H. Lidner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati And while the narrative is, unfortunately, one of a long and slow recovery, the resilient U.S. has reason to be hopeful. Here are the take-aways from Dr. Heath’s speech: • • • • • • • • The unemployment rate in our region, 6.8% in Cincinnati and 7.5% in Dayton, is statistically speaking, on par with the national unemployment rate of 7.0%. The Ohio median wage has fallen since the recession, because the jobs we’ve regained pay less than the jobs we lost. This follows a national trend. In the U.S. nearly half of the jobs lost in the recession were mid-pay positions; but only 2% of all jobs gained have been mid-pay. Low-pay employment has made up 70% of jobs gained. The Cincinnati region specializes in aerospace and aviation, financial services, and biohealth, making these sectors more influential on our local economy. The health of these industries directly affects the health of our regional economy. Ohio’s education and health services industries have added significantly to the region’s employment. These sectors continue to have a bright job outlook. Housing starts are up, and this is important because housing played such a role in the recession. The S&P 500 is up. Fewer than half of households participate in the stock market, but it’s a bell weather that tends to make consumers believe brighter days are around the corner. Consumer confidence is up. When consumers feel confident and act on it by making purchases, the country’s current slack in demand will lesson. Significantly increased demand is an economic event that will trigger employers to hire. The purchasing manager’s index is also trending up. EMCEE - Rosemary Haddad, Merrill Lynch Rosemary Haddad, Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch, emceed Chambernomics, and noted in her introduction that Julie Heath is passionate about education. So it is unsurprising that Dr. Heath pointed out that our long-term growth depends on the education of our future workforce. She indicated that one reason this recovery has been so slow is because there has been a change in the nature of work. “The link between skills, jobs and economic growth has become much tighter than ever before,” she said. February 2014 | THE VOICE 13 Update on Lakota Local Schools With a budget of more than $145 million annually, the Lakota School District does a lot of business locally, and we have longestablished relationships with many of our fellow Chamber members. We work hard to be a good business partner. We want to make it as straight-forward as possible to do business with the schools, although we still have to have to follow a myriad of laws and regulations in our own business operations. One tool that’s helped is our district website, at www.lakotaonline.com. In the list of quick links on the left side of the home page, you’ll see one for “bid opportunities.” That will take you to the page where there’s information about any products or services we’ll be seeking to purchase in the near future. Even if there are none at the time that apply to your business, you can also leave your company name and email so you’ll be notified when there are bidding opportunities in your business line. Just like any well-run business, we work to get the best price we can, while still making sure we’re purchasing goods or services of acceptable quality. We have policies in place that spell out when we’ll obtain multiple price quotes. For large purchases, our policies Working For You Sharon Peters is the newest member of the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance team. Prior to joining the staff of the Chamber, she was a top performing sales executive with 20+ years’ experience. After joining the Chamber team in 2013 she has already made a huge impact. On a daily basis she interacts with businesses of all sizes to discuss the benefits they receive as part of their Chamber membership. Then she ensures that each sustaining sponsorship or membership package is tailored to meet the members’ business needs. Why the Chamber? After spending the majority of her career in the IT industry, Sharon wanted to experience a new market and find an enjoyable job that leveraged her vast business-to-business sales experience. The technology infrastructure upgrade will involve purchasing both hardware and software to build out the framework that our digital networks operate on. Ann Farmiga West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance Volunteer [email protected] CONNECTIVITYGrow Your Business with Digital Talent Digital trends are creating new business models, and positioning technology as a revenue builder, market maker and customer finder. Does your staff have the knowledge and skills to help your company capitalize on these trends? If not, it could be bad news for your company. According to research analysts at Gartner, Inc., digital business incompetence will cause a quarter of businesses to lose competitive ranking by 2017. To successfully compete in a changing marketplace, you need assemble, develop and deploy an agile, multi-disciplined team that can take the “digital ball” and run with it. To do this, you are going to have to think beyond traditional recruitment and retention strategies. Build Your Digitally Competent Team Assess your current staff’s digital capabilities and determine where the gaps lie. Start filling those gaps using strategies such as the following: • Build digital expertise quickly. Work with your HR leaders to find qualified experts and talented people, and bring them into your work streams - no matter where they are based or what their employment arrangements are. • Explore new ways of building digital business capabilities, such as social sourcing, global networks and small-company acquisitions. • Redesign your existing learning programs to build digital business expertise. Consider offering things like “digital business boot camps.” • Develop a digital practice community within your organization, or assemble a team of digital experts to focus on trends such as cloud technologies, mobiles apps and smart machines. • Get creative with employee engagement strategies to increase talent retention, as well as to make your company more attractive to prospects that possess digital expertise. Digital transformation — using technology to radically improve your company’s performance and reach — comes with cultural and organizational challenges. But it also opens opportunities to use digital technology to work differently and more successfully. Is your team ready?
