TEHRAN – Cabinet Spokesman, Mohammad
Baqer Nobakht, has noted that the resignation
and dismissal of thirteen managers by the
government in relation to unconventional
salaries, has been accepted.
According to Mehr news agency, in an address
to a news conference, in Tehran on Tuesday
morning, Cabinet spokesman said that the
so-called astronomical salaries led many of the
accomplishments of the government, especially
in relation to civil servants’ pay raises, to go
unseen, resulting in discontent. Meanwhile, he
pointed out, the government would not allow
any imbalance in payrolls, or the emergence of
unconventional payments.
In further remarks, the Cabinet spokesman
said that the government has dealt with the
said unwanted phenomenon in a responsible
manner, and has not solely resorted to an
official apology.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he noted that our
current problem in banking affairs is that the
financial statements of our banks should become
transparent.
Furthermore, he noted that American hardliners
and Zionists have been against the JCPOA
which has been concluded between Iran and

Principlists Will Be Winner
NAMEHNEWS* - A former principlist Majlis
TEHRAN (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani underlined that Iran can provide
lasting security for Europe’s energy field.
Larijani, in a meeting with Bulgarian Prime
Minister Boyko Borissov on Tuesday, said the
situation in the region is critical, adding the issue of
terrorism is not a simple and tactical topic to be
resolved with a few aerial bombardment.
Stating that today the region and even
Europe are involved in terrorism, Larijani
said the fight against terrorism requires
international cooperation.
Pointing to the long history of relations
between Iran and Bulgaria, Larijani noted
that the visit of Bulgarian delegation to Iran
could be a turning point in relations between
the two countries and today is a good time to
strengthen bilateral ties.
Iran’s trade relations with EU has traditionally
been deep and Iranian businessmen are interested
in engaging with most countries, Larijani said
pointing to the current obstacles including banking
problems which are not completely resolved after
the removal of sanctions.
Borissov, for his part, said terrorism is a global
crisis, adding European countries unfortunately
consider terrorism and Islam the same.
“No religion certainly supports the actions of
terrorist groups, however, some major countries
support terrorists,” he noted.
Pointing to Brexit, Bulgarian PM said the move
divided the country into two parts providing the
grounds for the collapse of British pound which
has made the nation 10 per cent poorer.
Differences Narrowing Tehran, Bucharest Underscore
Developing Bilateral Ties
Among Caspian States
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who
is in Kazakhstan for a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea
littoral states, said the Caspian countries have reached a consensus on many
topics, but noted that a number of issues still remain to be settled.
It would be relatively optimistic to think that participants in the Astana
meeting will be able to resolve the outstanding issues and reach a conclusion,
Zarif told reporters upon his arrival in the Kazakh capital on Tuesday.
Though the differences have been widely narrowed, there still exist issues
that need to discussed and settled, he added.
As regards the common grounds, Zarif said the Caspian littoral countries have
developed good cooperation to conserve the environment and protect the flora and
fauna of the lake, adding that there is also a consensus that Caspian Sea should
remain the “sea of peace and friendship” without the presence of outsiders.
Accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, including legal and political
experts, Zarif is joining his counterparts from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan,
Turkmenistan and Russia for talks on the legal status of the lake.
Two days ago, a special working group from Iran arrived in Astana to
participate in the expert-level talks ahead of the ministerial meeting.
The working group’s sessions were part of efforts to draft the convention
on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.
The 45th meeting of the special working group of the Caspian Sea
concluded in Russia’s capital of Moscow on June 10 with a communiqué.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed water body on earth by area,
variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea.

IRGC Plays Down Media Hype over
Naval Patrol Near U.S. Warship
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Lieutenant commander of the Islamic Revolution
Guards Corps Navy played down reports that the IRGC boats in the
Strait of Hormuz have maneuvered dangerously close to a U.S.
military vessel, saying the patrol boats are always in the region as part
of routine operations.
Following reports by an American reporter aboard the USS New
Orleans military vessel claiming that 5 IRGC boats have maneuvered
dangerously close to the amphibious ship in the Strait of Hormuz, IRGC
Navy Lieutenant Commander General Alireza Tangsiri said on Tuesday
that maintaining a watch over foreign vessels is not unusual and that the
IRGC forces in the country’s southern waters are constantly engaged in
such round-the-clock operations.
The commander underlined that the IRGC naval forces are vigilantly
monitoring the sea traffic involving any foreign vessel, particularly those of
the ultra-regional forces and the U.S., whose existence in the region is a
potential threat and spells trouble.
The general also stressed that Americans have been complying the IRGC
warnings in the southern waters for years, saying the hue and cry in foreign
media outlets was a result of misunderstanding the issue.
According to a report by Gordon Lubold, five IRGC boats including four
small patrol craft and a larger fast-attack craft, maneuvered “dangerously”
close to the US military vessel.
General Joe Votel, head of U.S. Central Command, was also on board the
USS New Orleans during the encounter.

LONDON (Dispatches) - Beijing “does not
accept and does not recognise” the ruling by a
UN-backed tribunal on its dispute with the
Philippines over the South China Sea, the foreign
ministry said Tuesday.
The declaration in a statement on its website
followed a ruling by the Permanent Court of
Arbitration in the Hague that China has no
historic rights to its claimed “nine-dash line”.
“The award is null and void and has no binding
force,” the ministry said. “China neither accepts
nor recognises it.”
Beijing “does not accept any means of third
party dispute settlement or any solution imposed
on China,” it added, reiterating its long-standing
position on the dispute.
China has repeatedly denied the tribunal’s
authority to rule on the dispute with the Philippines
over the strategically vital region, claiming that
the court’s actions are illegal and biased against it.
Beijing refused the opportunity to defend its
position before the body.
“China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime

under no circumstances be affected by those

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Clinton is
struggling to make inroads among young
Americans who overwhelmingly supported
Bernie Sanders during the Democratic
presidential primary, a worrisome sign as
she tries to reassemble the coalition that
twice propelled Barack Obama into the
White House.
Opinions of Clinton among young Americans
vary by race and ethnicity, according to a new
GenForward poll of adults ages 18 to 30. The
majority of the nation’s younger blacks and
Asian-Americans have a favorable impression
of Clinton, but the presumptive Democratic
nominee struggles with whites and Hispanics.
Just 26 percent of young whites and 49
percent of Hispanics have a positive opinion of
the former secretary of state. Both groups
overwhelmingly say she is not trustworthy.
“I just don’t see her being honest and
straightforward,” said Alexander Tomas, an
18-year-old Hispanic from Fort Worth, Texas.
A recent high school graduate, Tomas
supported Sanders in the state’s Democratic
primary, but says he’s now undecided about
his choice in November’s general election.
GenForward is a survey by the Black Youth
Project at the University of Chicago with the
Associated Press-NORC Center for Public
Affairs Research. The first-of-its-kind poll
pays special attention to the voices of young
adults of color, highlighting how race and
ethnicity shape the opinions of the country’s
most diverse generation.
The survey polled all young adults, not
necessarily registered or likely voters, but the
findings suggest Clinton may struggle to turn
out people 18 to 30 to support her candidacy.
While Clinton emerged victorious in her
unexpectedly tough primary with Sanders, the
contest revealed a stunning weakness with
such young voters.
The GenForward poll found that among those
who preferred Sanders in the primaries, only
half are prepared to say they’ll back Clinton in
her general election face-off with presumptive
Republican nominee Donald Trump. About a
quarter say they won’t support Clinton, and
nearly a quarter say they’re not sure.
Clinton has made moves in recent days to
attract some of Sanders’ loyal young supporters,
including unveiling a college affordability
plan that would make in-state tuition free for
families making $125,000 or less per year.
Sanders proposed free tuition at public higher
education institutions for all, a plan supported
by three-quarters of young adults, according to
the survey.
BAGHDAD (AP) — A suicide car bomb ripped
through an outdoor market in a Shiite-dominated
northeastern district of Baghdad on Tuesday,
killing at least 11 people, officials said, as
government forces deployed across much of the
Iraqi capital in preparation for a major military
parade later this week.
The developments came on the heels of two large-scale
attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that killed more
than 300 people last week. On Monday, visiting U.S. Defense
Secretary Ash Carter said Washington will send 560 more
troops to Iraq to help battle IS.
In Tuesday’s bombing, the explosives-laden
pickup truck exploded during the morning rush
hour at a vegetable and fruit market in the
al-Rashidiya district, a police officer said. The
blast killed 11 and wounded up to 32, and also
damaged several cars, he added.
A medical official confirmed the casualty figures.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as
they were not authorized to talk to the media.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for
the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of the Islamic
State group. The Sunni extremists, who consider
Shiites heretics, swept across northern and western
Iraq in the summer of 2014, capturing large chunks
of territory and plunging the country into its worst
crisis since U.S. troops left at the end of 2011.

Moscovici Urges Britain’s May to Accelerate Brexit
BRUSSELS (Dispatches) - The European Commission’s economy chief
Pierre Moscovici urged Britain’s prime minister in waiting Theresa May on
Tuesday to accelerate the process towards Brexit.
Moscovici, France’s European commissioner, said further delays following
the June 23 referendum in which Britons voted to leave the EU would
prolong damaging uncertainty for the economy.
Boeing, Airbus Duel for $12b
Order From Revived SpiceJet
LONDON (Bloomberg) - Two years ago, SpiceJet Ltd. was
fighting for survival as creditors retreated and oil companies
refused to refuel its airliners. Today, the world’s biggest
planemakers are wooing the recovering Indian budget carrier
for a potential blockbuster order worth about $12 billion.
Boeing Co. and Airbus Group SE are locked in a battle to
supply SpiceJet with as many as 100 planes, and both are
offering aggressive discounts in negotiations that have
intensified in the past few months, according to people with
direct knowledge of the talks, who asked not to be identified
as the discussions are private.
A win would be key for Boeing, with the U.S. manufacturer
lagging behind its European rival in India’s burgeoning
budget-airline market, one of the key sources of industry
growth globally. Segment leader IndiGo and the local units
of Singapore Airlines Ltd. and AirAsia Bhd., which fly only
Airbus jets, have squeezed Boeing’s prospects in a market
where air travel is growing at a pace faster than in China or
the U.S.
“Losing SpiceJet would be a big blow to Boeing,” said
Amber Dubey, a New Delhi-based consultant heading
aerospace at KPMG. SpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh “knows this and hence
is perhaps having interesting conversations with both.”
The Indian discount airline needs to ramp up its 43-plane fleet quickly to
pose a meaningful threat to IndiGo, which controls 38.5 percent of the
market and flies 108 aircraft. IndiGo’s owner, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., has
placed orders for 430 Airbus A320neo planes, with a target to build a 1,000jet fleet eventually.
A SpiceJet spokesman confirmed that Singh is attending this week’s
Farnborough Air Show in the U.K., but declined to say whether an order
announcement is imminent.
“We will continue to work with them on the fleet needs and look forward
to delivering their first 737Max,” Dinesh Keskar, Boeing’s senior vice
president for sales, said in an e-mail.
“Airbus enjoys 70 percent market share in India and most Indian carriers
are growing their business with us,” said Airbus spokesman Justin Dubon.
“We’d be delighted to help SpiceJet too.”
Bombardier Inc., which is enjoying a revival with its C Series narrow-body
jet starting service and winning a benchmark deal with Delta Air Lines Inc.,
is in a separate race for more than 50 smaller planes that SpiceJet is buying.
The Canadian aircraft producer will be competing against Brazil’s Embraer
SA and the Avions de Transport Regional, or ATR, joint venture of Airbus
and Italy’s Leonardo-Finmeccanica SpA.
At least eight budget carriers dot the skies of India, where air travel grew
more than 20 percent last year, according to the International Air Transport
Association. In comparison, passenger traffic in China rose about 10 percent
and less than 5 percent in the U.S., IATA said in December.
A boom in Asian air travel may provide the bright spot that the planemakers
are looking for as last month’s so-called Brexit referendum for the U.K. to
leave the European Union adds to uncertainty clouding the global economy
while low fuel prices sap demand for new, more efficient jets. On Monday,
the first day of the Farnborough expo, Asian airlines were set to give the
biggest boost to both Boeing and Airbus.
Italy’s Economy Faces 2
Completely Lost Decades
ROME (Dispatches) - The Italian economy faces
almost two decades of stagnation and pain, and
will not see a return to its pre-financial crisis
levels until at least 2025, according to new
analysis released by the International Monetary
Fund on Monday night.
In the IMF’s latest report on the state of the
Italian economy, the organization forecasts
growth of less than 1% in 2016, down from
1.1% at its last estimate, and growth of just
1% in 2017, when previous expectations had
been of growth around 1.25%.
Those numbers are just part of a longterm trend that has seen the country
undershoot all of its major European
competitors in economic growth terms.
Everything from productivity growth to
unit labor costs are worse in Italy than
they are in the rest of Europe’s major
economies, and that is having a huge drag
on the country.
“The economy has started to recover from a
prolonged recession. The recovery, however, is
modest and fragile, against the backdrop of
long-standing structural rigidities, strained
bank balance sheets, and high public debt that
leave very little room to cope with shocks. On
current projections, the economy is not
expected to return to its pre-crisis (2007)
output peak until the mid-2020s, implying
nearly two lost decades, a growing income gap
with euro zone partners, and a protracted
period of balance sheet vulnerability,” the IMF
report claims.
It added that growth may be pretty stagnant in
the country, but Italy remains the third-largest
economy in the eurozone, and the eighth
largest in the world. As a result, concerns that
the country’s stuttering economy could drag on
the rest of Europe are rife.

Single Parity Rates for Foreign Currencies on Agenda
TEHRAN - Single parity rates for foreign currencies will
take effect from next month, head of Tehran Chamber of
Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture Masoud
Khansari said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks in his statement to the 16th meeting
of representatives of Tehran Chamber of Commerce.
Iran to Severely Confront Bids
Hampering Missile Work
TEHRAN (PressTV) - A senior official says Iran will “severely confront”
any measure taken to hamper the country’s missile activities.
“We will severely confront any move — be it political, legal,
or technical — that hinders our missile program,” Abbas
Araqchi, a deputy foreign minister, said on national television
on Monday night.
His remarks came in reaction to a report by UN chief Ban Ki-Moon last
week, claiming that Iran’s missile tests were not in the spirit of the country’s
landmark nuclear deal with world powers.
In his first six-monthly report to the Security Council on implementation
of a UN resolution endorsing the landmark deal, Ban called on Iran to stop
conducting ballistic missile launches.
Araqchi said Ban’s report about Resolution 2231 elicited a harsh response
from Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
“Zarif had a very harsh telephone conversation with Mr. Ban Ki-moon”
right after, Araqchi said, adding that Iran however did not take an official
stance because the draft was not official.
He said Iran hopes Ban will revise the report for publication, “otherwise,
it will entail a harsh treatment from the Iranian Foreign Ministry.”
Araqchi said the claims in the draft report are “certainly made under
pressure from the US and Europe.”
Earlier, the Western military alliance of NATO also expressed concern
about Iranian missile tests, linking them to Resolution 2231.
In his live interview with the IRIB on Monday, Araqchi said that through
the nuclear agreement, Iran managed to set the two issues of the missile
program and that of the nuclear program apart.

FROM PAGE 1
He said a previous United Nations Security Council resolution —
Resolution 1929 — had prohibited Iran from engaging in ballistic missile
activities, a prohibition that he said was “dangerous.”
“One of our achievements in the JCPOA was that, by whatever means at
hand, we managed to end the state of the missile and nuclear [activities]
being intertwined,” Araqchi said.
“This was a huge feat and took a lot of effort,” he said.
Araqchi pointed out that, following Iran’s first test-firing of a missile after
the deal, US officials acknowledged that the JCPOA had not been breached,
testimony to the fact that missile activities were no more associated with the
nuclear program by the Americans.
However, he said, the U.S. continued to be “worried about our capabilities.”
“Our missile tests were taken to the Security Council; yet, the U.S. failed
to get even a press release,” the Iranian deputy foreign minister said. “We
have pushed them way back.”
Araqchi cautioned, however, that Iran should always be prepared for
hostile action on the missile issue.
“We should always expect them to try and come forward regarding the
missile issue at whatever opportunity [they can find], and we should push
them back,” he said.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Araqchi said Iran will continue to support the
Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah.
“Supporting the resistance axis is always stressed by the Leader [of the
Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei], the administration, and
the entire establishment, and this is an unchangeable policy from which we
will not derogate,” he said.

FARNBOROUGH, U.K. (Dispatches) - Japan’s
Mitsubishi Aircraft is in talks with Iran to supply
the Mideast country with its regional passenger
jet currently under development, and also landed
a deal with a Swedish leasing firm here during
one of the biggest airshows in the world.
The unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries began
market surveys into Iran last September, four
months before the U.S. lifted sanctions. The
Japanese company has been touching base with
flag carrier Iran Air and Iran Aseman Airlines, as
well as the country’s aviation authorities.
Mitsubishi Aircraft and the Iranian carriers are
discussing purchase orders during the Farnborough
Air Show, which kicked off on Monday in the
London suburb.
Iran Air is weighing purchasing 80 70-seat
Mitsubishi Regional Jets and using them for
domestic routes. Executives from both sides
also discussed a possible deal last month during
the International Air Transport Association
conference in Dublin.
Mitsubishi Aircraft is partnering with the
Japanese government in this endeavor, aiming to
make use of state-backed financing. Because
Mitsubishi Aircraft is developing the 90-seat
model first, the company plans to deliver the
70-seater in 2019 at the earliest.
Rivals Embraer of Brazil and Canada’s
Bombardier are also marketing their aircraft
in Iran. Europe’s Airbus has reached
agreement with Iran for the purchase of
118 planes. U.S.-based Boeing announced a
deal with Iran Air in late June.
Because of economic sanctions, Iran had been
unable to replace aging aircraft. The government
said it needs between 400 and 500 passenger
planes over the next decade. Airlines based in
Qatar and Dubai had monopolized that demand
up to now. Tehran is also planning to expand its
airports and transform the city into a Mideast hub.
However, several American legislators maintain
a hard line against selling commercial aircraft to
Iran. Both Airbus and Mitsubishi Aircraft procure
many parts from the U.S.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Aircraft announced it
has entered into a letter of intent with Rockton, a
Swedish regional aircraft leasing company, for up
to 20 MRJs. Deliveries to Rockton are set to
begin in 2020. The Japanese company has already
secured orders for 407 jets, mainly in Japan and
the U.S., but this would be the first order from
Europe. Demand has picked up after the MRJ
made its maiden flight last November. Despite the
stagnation in new sales due to the global
economic slowdown, Mitsubishi Aircraft is
stepping up its sales operation toward the goal of
selling 1,000 planes.

finance ministers meeting.
The Seoul government is now in the process of
selecting a bank to manage the new system. The
two candidates are the Industrial Bank of Korea
and Woori Bank.
Partner banks in Europe will also be selected
following further talks with Washington.
Euro is the currency that the Iranian government
and companies prefer, but the South Korean
currency won must first be converted into dollars,
meaning the new payment system requires the
cooperation of Washington.
Trade with Iran has been widening, especially
following President Park Geun-hye’s visit to the
Islamic republic in May.
Park came home with corporate memoranda of
understanding worth US$45.6 billion, but the
problem is the lack of channels for handling the
financial transactions.
South Korean firms are currently obligated to
make all monetary transactions via their Korean
currency accounts at the Iran Central Bank.
South Korean firms have been requesting Seoul
to open a euro-based payment system for a while,

Some Arab States Fear
Democracy in Iraq
TEHRAN (PressTV) - A senior adviser to
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah
Seyed Ali Khamenei says some regional
states fear the prospect of democracy taking
root in Iraq and thus setting a model for other
Arab nations.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a former foreign
minister who advises the Leader on
international affairs, made the comments in a
meeting with Ammar al-Hakim, the leader of
the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq political
party, in Tehran on Monday.
He was remarking on the key victory
secured by Iraqi forces last month, when they
pushed the Takfiri terrorist group of Daesh
out of the city of Fallujah, and the prospect
of further victories to follow.
Fallujah had been held by Daesh for more
than two years. The terror group started its
campaign of terror in Iraq in June 2014.
“What is feared by some reactionary
regional states is that democracy finds itself
a secure footing in Iraq, causing other Arab
countries to start rejecting tribal rule,”
Velayati said.
“Therefore, the victory of the people and
the army under the leadership of religious
authority has had a great role in bringing
about a transformation in the region and the
Arab countries,” he added.
The Iraqi military’s most important victory
against the terrorists ever since they launched
their campaign in Iraq has been its liberation
of the central city of Ramadi, the capital of
western Iraq’s Anbar Province, last December.
Baghdad said at the time that the army
would use Ramadi’s liberation as a “launch
pad” to free Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest
city, and the headquarters of Daesh in Iraq.
Velayati, however, said Fallujah was
strategically more important than Mosul and
voiced hope that Mosul be freed of terrorist
presence over the upcoming months, too.
Opining on the trend of victories, he said,
“What we interpret from the developments in
Iraq is that the country is indubitably the
most important Arab country concerning the
capacity it holds.”
Tehran, Sofia Agree on
Nuclear Cooperation
IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK
TEHRAN - Iran and Bulgarian officials have
agreed to exchange experience in nuclear energy,
the Bulgarian cabinet says.
The announcement comes after a meeting of
Bulgarian Energy Minister Temenuzhka
Petkova and Deputy PM Tomislav Donchev
with Ali Akbar Salehi, who heads the country’s
nuclear watchdog.
It is not immediately clear whether common
ground was reached during the talks on
Bulgaria’s plans to sell to Iran a nuclear reactor
and other equipment made for a plant project
that it abandoned.
Bulgaria ditched Belene Nuclear Power Plant
(NPP) project it had pursued with Russia. In June,
an arbitration ruled that it will have to pay EUR
550 to Russian energy company Atomstroyexport,
but will also be handed the reactor and other
devices that were manufactured for Belene.
Since then Sofia has been looking for options to
sell it to third countries.
“Minister Petkova informed Salehi about the
decision of the arbitration court in Geneva [the
Commercial and Industrial International
Arbitration Court of Geneva, CARICI] on the
commercial dispute between the National
Electricity Company and Atomstroyexport with
regard to the Belene NPP project,” the Bulgarian
government’s statement says.
No mention is made of deals involving a
nuclear reactor.
Bulgaria, however, has offered to provide Iran
with expertise in the storage of spent nuclear fuel
and other issues, considering its decades-long
experience with Kozloduy NPP.

ONDON (Dispatches)
- Lewis Hamilton
and Nico Rosberg’s
in-house rivalry could
soon be a thing of the
past for Mercedes
judging by their views
on Fernando Alonso at
the British Grand Prix.
Alonso finished in
13th
place
at
Silverstone after
spinning off course
during lap 25 but
performed a quick
recovery from the error during his battle with
Felipe Massa, which caught the attention of
McLaren-Honda’s rivals.
Mid-race, Mercedes hailed the Spaniard’s
composure in a beaming message on their
official Twitter feed after he avoided the car
colliding with a wall.
The German manufacturers’ public admiration
for Alonso comes at a time when the internal
rumblings between Rosberg and Hamilton
have continued to escalate.
Mercedes’ racing director Toto Wolff
has publicly warned the pair that they
risk suspension if the recent collisions
caused at the Spanish and Austrian races
were to be repeated.
That friction may soon open the door for
Alonso, who was the second-fastest lap at
Silverstone behind Rosberg, to succeed one of
the feuding drivers.

EWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Defending champion
Rajeev Ram beat fellow American
Mackenzie McDonald, 6-2, 6-3, in the opening
round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
on Monday.
Ram, a two-time winner on Newport’s grass
courts - also in 2009 when he won his only other
ATP title - needed just 65 minutes to get past the
21-year-old McDonald, making his tour debut.
The 32-year-old Ram won the first set in 33
minutes on a new-look center court area in the
shadows of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
He said he enjoys coming back to Newport.
‘’For me, yeah, I’ve won two titles, they’ve
both been here,’’ he said. ‘’I’ve played here
every year since I’ve been a pro. A lot of things
make it really special.’’
After last year’s event, wooden bleachers at
center court behind the south baseline were
replaced by stadium seats. An electronic
scoreboard was installed, which gave the players
the option of challenging calls for the first time
at the tournament, which is celebrating its 40th
anniversary.
Up 4-0 in the second set, Ram doubled-faulted
twice in three points to lose the first of two
straight games.
‘’That probably shouldn’t have happened
from 40-love up,’’ he said. ‘’Thankfully, I was
up two breaks.’’
He won the match when McDonald hit a
forehand return wide.
ONDON (Dispatches) - New Manchester
United boss Jose Mourinho does not want a
season to settle in before pursuing major trophies
and is eyeing immediate results.
Mourinho’s targets for Manchester United
will be “aggressive” in his debut campaign at
Old Trafford.
The former Chelsea boss has started his
three-year contract at United having replaced the
sacked Louis van Gaal.
United have finished seventh, fourth and fifth in the Premier League since Alex Ferguson’s retirement
in 2013, but Mourinho is immediately setting the bar high.
He told adidas Front Row: “I am not humble when I talk about targets, I’m quite aggressive on that.
“I want everything and everything is to win matches, play well, score goals, don’t concede goals everything. I want everything.
“I know that we are speaking about a hypothetical situation which is very difficult to reach but I want
everything.”
Mourinho called on United’s supporters to show togetherness with him and his squad over his tenure
as manager.
He said: “I understand that they expect a lot from me but I also expect a lot from them.
Ram feels better prepared to defend his title
this year.
‘’It feels a little bit different than it did in 2010
when I was defending it,’’ he said. ‘’I feel a little bit
more confident in my game and what I can do.’’
McDonald captured an NCAA singles and
doubles title at UCLA before turning pro.
Top seed Steve Johnson, now ranked a careerbest No. 25, received a bye in first round.
In other first-round play, No. 8 seed Donald
Young beat fellow American Jared Donaldson,
6-1, 6-3; Dudi Sela of Israel ousted Lukas Lacko
of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2; and Marco Chiudinelli of
Switzerland advanced when fifth-seeded Vasek
Pospisil of Canada withdrew with a back injury.
The Hall of Fame Championships are played in
conjunction with induction ceremonies into the
International Tennis Hall of Fame. Justine Henin,
a former WTA world No. 1 and seven-time major
champion, and Marat Safin, a two-time major and
former world No. 1, are scheduled to be enshrined
Saturday during a center-court ceremony.
Amelie Mauresmo, who was enshrined last
year but missed the ceremony for the birth of her
son, is also scheduled to be on hand.
In Hamburg, Maximo Gonzalez upset fifth-seeded
Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) in the first round of
the German Open on Monday.
Other seeded players in action advanced.
Third-seeded Pablo Cuevas beat Halle champion
Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3 as he looks to add to his
titles in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

ADRID (Dispatches) - Former Real Madrid
defender Alvaro Arbeloa slammed France
coach Didier Deschamps for not calling up Karim
Benzema at Euro 2016.
Arbeloa criticised France coach Didier
Deschamps’ decision not to call up former Real
Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema following the
nation’s Euro 2016 final defeat.
Hosts France went down to Portugal 1-0 in
Sunday’s decider, with Eder finding the net in the
second half of extra time in Paris.
Forwards Andre-Pierre Gignac and Antoine Griezmann both had chances for France, with the former’s
stoppage-time effort coming off the post, but the side were unable to find the net after 120 minutes.
It was only the second time France were kept scoreless in the tournament after playing out a 0-0 draw
with Switzerland in the group stages.
Arbeloa believes it could have been a different story had Benzema been given a spot in the 23-man
squad, left out by Deschamps due to a sex-tape scandal involving he and international team-mate
Mathieu Valbuena.
“That is what happens when you leave the best number nine in the world at home,” tweeted Arbeloa,
in reference to Benzema.
