History
Founder’s Message
T
hrough the vision of private camp directors from the American Camp
Association, New York (ACA-NY), SCOPE was founded in 1991 as
a signature program to raise funds to provide all children, regardless
of their socio-economic background, with the same educational
and developmental benefits of camp derived by their more affluent
counterparts. Through grassroots fundraising efforts, 26 children were
provided with SCOPE camperships in 1992. Since that time, more than
15,000 children have attended camp through SCOPE funding.

In 2005, SCOPE was established as a 501c3 charitable organization in order to expand its fundraising capacity.
Allocations to partner camps have steadily increased with additional support from individuals, corporations and
foundations.
When over 50% of the children served by SCOPE never finish high school,
SCOPE was established as the antidote to the despair and cycle of failure
now rampant in our underperforming communities. SCOPE rewards
children for staying in school with a summer at camp. And, once in camp,
they are embraced by the strong supervision of camp professionals
working to instill solid values, build their social skills and enhance their
self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience – all key building blocks to
becoming a successful, contributing member of society.
hat SCOPE does is very simple: SCOPE provides hope. For
thousands of economically disadvantaged children living every
day in parts of our community that few of us dare to walk through, the
promise of a summer away at camp provides a measure of hope that
maybe, just maybe, tomorrow might be a better day. And, it’s not
just the “tomorrow” spent away at camp that SCOPE brings, but the
possibility of many brighter tomorrows one can achieve when they strive
for something better.
In 2007, SCOPE embarked on a national expansion initiative to enable regions throughout the United States to launch
campership programs. In partnership with camp directors and supporters from the Chicago area, SCOPE-Midwest was
established as the first affiliate. SCOPE administers the program and allocations to Midwest camps with the funds raised
in that region. Through local fundraising events, individual gifts, and foundation and corporate support, SCOPE-MW
has enabled hundreds of children in Chicago and other Midwest cities to derive the benefits of summer camp.
SCOPE continues to seek ways to expand the program to other regions throughout the United States. Affiliates receive
administrative and fundraising resources through SCOPE in order to provide camp experiences to children in their region.
SCOPE has gained recognition for its work with children and camps and in 2003, was the recipient of the American
Camping Foundation’s prestigious Eleanor P. Eells Award for Program Excellence, presented at the American Camp
Association’s National Conference in San Francisco, California.

The camp community, and those who understand and embrace the
values that a camp experience can provide, have through SCOPE, made
a commitment to improving our future, one child at a time. Over 1500
children each summer benefit from a camp experience that SCOPE
provides. Together, we have created hope for thousands of children over
the years and, I trust, for most, a better life reaching for the American
dream that we all cherish so much.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I am delighted that 2009, my first full year as the President of the SCOPE Board, was extremely successful. SCOPE again sent
record numbers, more than 1600 children, to ACA-accredited, not-for-profit camps in the Northeast and Midwest. SCOPE campers
make new friends, see new things and discover parts of themselves and the world that they did not know existed. For millions of
children, summer camp is a wonderful, character and skill building experience. For SCOPE campers, it can be so much more. It
may be a child’s first experience in a physically and emotionally safe environment surrounded by natural beauty and caring adult
role models.
During 2009, we continued to work hard to send more and more deserving children to camp, and several new initiatives were
intended to expand our footprint and effectiveness.
In particular, our Midwest affiliate continued to make great strides. I was honored to attend SCOPE Midwest’s inaugural gala at the
Sheraton Hotel in Chicago. The SCOPE-Midwest team sent 150 children to camp in 2009.
With guidance from board member Herb Lowe, we surveyed all of our participating SCOPE camps to determine the effectiveness
of our funding. We were pleased to find that the majority of SCOPE campers attend camp for several years, and 90% of returning
campers graduate from high school.
SCOPE’s expansion and growth will continue to be fueled by a tremendous group of volunteers, hard working and generous board,
and professional staff, led by Executive Director, Michele Friedman. Their dedication to SCOPE’s mission has enabled us to provide
over 15,000 children with a camp experience since 1992.
Special thanks as well to those who organized this year’s major fundraising events –
Golf Event chair Michael Corpuel; Benefit Dinner chair Ross Coleman; and Winter
Event chairs Justin Mayer and Jessica Jacobs. SCOPE events help us connect with
our donors and raise funds and awareness.
Despite economic challenges, our donors continue to keep their commitments
to SCOPE and the children we serve. SCOPE’s future is a bright one, and we are
delighted to have all of our friends and supporters along for the journey.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
T
he success of SCOPE’s fund-raising during fiscal 2009 enabled the organization to become financially secure and to engage
many of our major funders to expand and solidify their commitment. The generosity of our individual contributors and corporate
and foundation partners is greatly appreciated. I am proud to report some of the major highlights for 2009.
The Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz, expanded the Camp Brooklyn funding to provide camperships for 400 Brooklyn
children in 2009. The partnership with Camp Brooklyn has grown significantly over the years and continues to be a mainstay of
SCOPE’s fund-raising success. The board of the Heckscher Foundation for Children increased their strong support to provide
camperships for 300 children from New York City, and the NYMEX Charitable Foundation renewed their grant for 2009. Their belief
in the benefits of summer camp is evident in their unparalleled and long term support.
The Turn 2 Foundation funded camperships for 80 children who are enrolled in their after school programs. Many of the campers
were returning for a third year through the generosity of the foundation. The feedback from parents and campers was outstanding.
The camp experience is part of the continuum of year-round support that is a key element of Turn 2’s mission.
The Brooke Jackman Foundation provided funding for 15 children who take part in their literacy programs during the school year to
attend camp for 4 weeks. This partnership has expanded to a long term commitment to the children and to SCOPE.
The board leadership of the Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund continued its partnership with the Carver Center in Port
Chester, New York, and “Fred’s Kids” returned to camp through SCOPE funding this past summer. The Gabler Fund seeks to make
a multi-year commitment to these children, who will be followed up year-round at the Carver Center.
Many new partners provided support and others increased their gifts. The New
York Yankees Foundation sponsored 100 children from their local community;
the Jerricho Cotchery Foundation, the Cohn Family Foundation, the Old Oaks
Foundation, and Slomins, Inc. were warmly welcomed as new supporters. We
were also extremely grateful to the Henry Nias Foundation for increasing their
gift to provide 50 inner-city children with the wonders of a camp experience.
We wish to thank all of our foundation and corporate partners for their generous
and continued support and for their belief in SCOPE’s mission.
And, to all of you who supported SCOPE, your generosity is greatly appreciated
by all of the children whose lives you have changed forever!

How SCOPE Works
Partner Organizations

COPE provides camperships for economically disadvantaged children to attend resident nonprofit camps,
accredited by the American Camp Association. The funding of $500 per child covers approximately half the actual
cost of a two week camp program.

SCOPE, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has provided
camperships for more than 15,000 children from low-income communities
since 1991. Each year more than 1600 children receive the benefits of
summer camp through funds raised from foundation and corporate partners
as well as individual gifts.
Residential, not-for-profit camps that are accredited by the American Camp
Association (ACA) apply annually for participation in SCOPE. By working
with only accredited camps, SCOPE ensures that all partner camps commit
to maintaining a high level of quality in administration, facilities, program
and staff to provide a safe and enriching camp experience to children.
Allocations to participating camps are made upon submission of required
documentation for each camper. The eligibility guidelines require that
children are enrolled in public school and qualify for the Federal free or
reduced lunch program. Camps recruit and enroll campers in partnership
with schools and community agencies which work with the eligible children
year-round. Parents may also apply directly to participating camps.

Brooke Jackman Foundation Camp Brooklyn Fund
T
he children served by SCOPE are low-income youth whose families cannot afford to provide them with a summer
camp experience. Through SCOPE, children escape from the urban setting to secure environments which foster
positive self-esteem, strong self-confidence, and appropriate social skills. Summer camp affords these children the
opportunity to leave the boredom, pollution, and potential dangers of a city summer and instead experience a
supervised, caring community surrounded by positive adult role models.
In order to participate in SCOPE,
campers must:
Be 7-16 years old
Meet family income eligibility requirements established by the United
States Department of Agriculture for free or reduced-price school lunch
Complete an application essay expressing their desire and motivation
to go to resident camp
Be enrolled in a public school
Agree to comply with the registration procedures and rules and
regulations of the chosen camp

SCOPE CAMPS – Eligibility
S
COPE was developed not only to help children, but also as a response to the increased need for funding and support for
camps in the not-for-profit sector. In an effort to provide a valuable experience for economically disadvantaged children
through the provision of “camperships”, SCOPE continues its dedication to fundraising and program designs which promote camp
as a complementary adjunct to formal education. Camps are chosen based on their adherence to these ideals, as demonstrated in
their written materials, organizational goals or mission statements, and their expressed commitment to providing quality summer
camp experiences.
Camps must demonstrate that they provide safe opportunities for their campers to benefit from an enriching, character-building
and educational experience. Only not-for-profit, resident camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) may apply
for participation in SCOPE. Camps that are accredited must meet national standards in camp operation, quality of program and
facilities, staff qualifications, and health and safety.

Participating camps must verify that they:
Have current 501c3 status as issued by the Internal Revenue Service
Have a valid Operating Permit as issued by the state Department of Health
By providing camperships for eligible campers, SCOPE is supporting the
participating not-for-profit camps that are facing funding challenges. Despite
SCOPE’s success, most not-for-profit camps continue to operate well below
capacity. Our goal for the future is to place a child in need in every empty bunk.

2nd Annual Backpack Drive
T
he Annual Pack-a-Backpack for Camp Backpack Drive provided SCOPE
campers with backpacks filled with essentials for camp such as toiletries,
towels, and other gear. Many thanks to SCOPE volunteer, Michael Arnold,
and the Summer Associates at his law firm Mintz Levin, who raised funds and
spearheaded this project.

ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER
SCOPE GOLF OUTING
The 2009 SCOPE Benefit Dinner, held at the Sheraton Hotel in
Atlantic City, raised $200,000 to provide children in need with an
opportunity to attend camp. The evening would not have been
possible without the hard work and dedication of dinner chair,
Ross Coleman and the outstanding dinner committee, as well as the
leadership of Michele Friedman, Stephanie Abrams, and the SCOPE
board of directors.
On September 21st, 100 camp directors,
camp staff, friends, relatives and corporate
sponsors enjoyed a great day on the links
in support of the 12th Annual SCOPE
Golf Invitational at the Glen Head Country
Club on Long Island. The event was sold
out, and featured an impressive brunch,
cocktail party and dinner; over 60 raffle and
tournament prizes; opportunities for golfers
at all ability levels; and most important....
event proceeds that broke the record to
support SCOPE’s goal of providing camp
experiences for children in need.
We were pleased to honor the 2009 Ben Appelbaum Advocate
for Youth Award recipient, Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz, founder of Camp Brooklyn, which raises funds that
provide camp opportunities for low income children residing in
Brooklyn, NY. In partnership with SCOPE, which administers the fund,
the Camp Brooklyn program provided 400 camperships in 2009.
We also recognized the inductees to The Legends of Camping: David Silverstein, Marvin Domsky, and Ray Diamond. Each of these
camp icons has enhanced the camp profession by their example, while impacting countless children’s lives.
