High-quality solutions
to meet customer requirements.
Your international packaging and paper company
A responsible business strategy combined with decades of experience enables Mondi to offer high-quality
solutions that meet customer requirements by providing efficient and sustainable packaging solutions for
a variety of applications.
Mondi operates two divisions: Europe & International
and South Africa. Within this structure, Mondi pursues
its strategy of safeguarding leading market positions, a
high-quality, low-cost asset base and a commitment to
continuous operational improvement. The seeds of the
global business that is now Mondi were planted in 1967
in South Africa, when our former owners, Anglo American plc, built the Merebank Mill. Following more than
two decades of growth and consolidation in South Africa,
Mondi came to Europe in the early 1990s to start a long
period of expansion through acquisitions.
During this time, many major companies – often market
leaders in their home nations – became part of Mondi.
These included Austria’s Neusiedler AG and Frantschach
AG, Świecie in Poland and Syktyvkar in Russia and,
more recently, Nordenia International AG.
Innovation
Our goal is to create packaging and paper solutions that
meet our customers’ current and future needs. Our R&D
experts are developing new products and processes
every day through an innovative approach in cooperation with partners. You can experience these solutions by
getting in touch.
Sustainability
Creating sustainable value for our customers, employees,
shareholders, suppliers, business partners and host
communities is a core principle at Mondi. Sustainable
development is therefore an integral part of the Mondi
philosophy, in line with our commitment to tackling
economic, ecological and social challenges.
As an international packaging and paper Group, Mondi
Europe & International stands for:

Your benefits
At Mondi, we aim to create long-term value for our stakeholders by transforming renewable natural resources
into innovative product solutions that meet customer
needs in a responsible, cost-effective and sustainable
way. Mondi recognises the need to integrate sound
principles governing safety, business conduct, social,
environmental and economic activities into business
practices and decision-making.
• History of innovation and success
• Production sites across 30 countries
• Creating successful customer solutions
• Delivering outstanding value
• Commitment to safeguarding the future
• Internationally recognised sustainability performance
Securing access to sustainable fibre in the short, medium and long term, in order to meet the needs of our
business and our customers, is the most significant
issue. The sustainable management of our resources
and assets will ensure this continued access, and that
we are able to meet customer requirements. In 2012
Mondi planted 31 million trees and managed vast areas
of forest equivalent to more than three million soccer
pitches. Committed to optimising power generation,
Mondi also attaches importance to renewable energy
sources. Mondi Świecie uses anaerobic technology, for
example, to produce green biogas energy and reduce
the consumption of fossil fuels, such as coal.
Sustainable development
In view of its public commitment to sustainable development, Mondi provides customers with the cost-effective,
environmentally responsible products they need. The
approach to product stewardship is based on the
Life-Cycle Initiative defined in the United Nations
Environmental Programme, which became a voluntary
commitment in 2009. It supports the management of
the environmental, safety and health impact of products
throughout their entire life cycle. Mondi is also a
member of the World Business Council for Sustainable
Development, a global association of companies that
galvanises the business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment.
Mondi’s sustainable performance is widely acknowledged.

Paper industry myths and facts
With our public commitment to sustainable development, we provide high quality and eco-efficient
packaging solutions for all customer requirements. Mondi Containerboard stands for responsibly sourced
products and internationally accredited quality, environmental, hygiene and safety management systems,
all of which ensures we have the highest possible manufacturing standards.
Green Containerboard
Our Green Containerboard initiative promotes envir
onmentally preferable purchasing and supports our
customers in going green. It includes certified paper
grades that save natural resources and have a low basis
weight. Green Containerboard involves four elements:
sustainable forestry, biodegradability, conserving resources and lightweight solutions.
The Green Containerboard logo provides information at
a glance about which “green” standard the paper grade
corresponds to. The logo is part of every technical data
sheet.
Paper truly is a “green” product, as it is a renewable
resource and completely recyclable. All Containerboard paper grades are certified according to
EN 13432 as biodegradable materials.
Comprehensive certification: from sustainable
forestry to occupational safety
All containerboard paper grades carry either FSC
or PEFCTM certification. We ensure that our business
processes are managed by systems that comply with
ISO 9000 and 14000 series standards. Since a consistent hygiene management system is of vital importance
for foodstuff packaging, our mill in Raubling, Germany,
carries DIN EN 15593 hygiene certification. Moreover,
all Mondi containerboard grades are ISEGA-approved,
verifying that they are qualified for safe food packaging.
TM
To protect our employees’ health, we have introduced
special management systems, including ones that
comply with the OHSAS international occupational
health and safety management system specifications.
Mondi also runs general health programmes on-site.

In the paper business, ecologically sound operations are
crucial. Most consumers consider environmental performance to be an important factor in their choice of brand.
When it comes to the environmental impact of the paper
industry, public debate is often clouded by prejudices.
There are concrete facts that disprove prevailing myths
and misconceptions. In order to dispel the four most
common myths, we have compiled some interesting
facts and figures.
Myth 1: The production of paper contributes to forest
degradation and reduction.
Your benefits
• Savings of natural resources
• FSC™ or PEFC™-certified paper grades
• ISO 9001 and 14001-compliant business
systems
• OHSAS-compliant health and safety

Myth 3: Paper production is an energy-intensive industry.
Facts: The energy required to satisfy the annual con-
Facts: The annual growth in the forested area of Europe
is equivalent to 1.5 million football pitches or approximately 6,500 km2. In the last 50 years, the forested area
of Europe has grown by more than 30 per cent. Today,
forests cover 44 per cent of Europe – and 98 per cent of
these forests are sustainably managed.
tainerboard demand of one person is equivalent to the
energy used by a single 60-watt light bulb in one month.
About 50 per cent of the energy consumed by the paper
making industry originates from renewable fuel: biomass,
primary tree bark and black liquor being used in pulp
preparation.

ful to the environment.
Facts: Properly managed, healthy forests absorb much
more CO2 than forests in which most of the trees are
old. Paper is the most frequently recycled product in the
world. The amount of paper now being recycled in developed countries exceeds 60 per cent. Since 1990, the
paper industry has reduced its emissions of sulphur dioxide by 83 per cent, carbon dioxide by 40 per cent and
nitrogen oxide by 36 per cent for each tonne of paper
produced. It is a little-known fact that the carbon footprint of paper is relatively insignificant. On a global scale,
the paper making industry is responsible for just 1 per
cent of carbon dioxide emissions.

Facts: Recycled paper is an outstanding and ecoefficient material. During the process of repeated
recycling, the fibres in recycled paper become consid
erably weaker. The maximum number of processing
cycles for recycled paper is six to eight. It is estimated
that in order to maintain an optimal level of recycling
and paper production, a 40 per cent input of primary
fibres is required. Without primary fibres, global paper
production would cease within six to 18 months.

ECO7 achieves breakthrough in
recycled containerboard.
ECO-logical leadership from
Mondi Świecie
Investment in the lightweight recycled containerboard machine
ECO7 has made Mondi Świecie an European leader in its field.
Mondi’s paper mill in Świecie, Poland, is ideally placed
to meet customer demand for lightweight, high-strength
fluting and testliner. Thanks to its containerboard machine ECO7, Mondi can now satisfy the corrugated
industry’s demand for cost-effective, lightweight recycled
containerboard, with an annual production capacity of
470,000 tonnes.
Fast, light, central – following this guiding principle,
Mondi invested in ECO7, one of the world’s fastest containerboard machines. Its high-speed technology offers
short production cycles, resulting in briefer lead times
and the fast availability of cost-effective paper grades.
In addition, ECO7’s lightweight product range paves
the way for environmentally sound packaging because
less weight means less waste and thus reduced costs.
The machine’s central location in Poland also eliminates capacity bottlenecks for delivering lightweight
containerboard across Europe.
ECO7 containerboard meets
customer demands
ECO7’s production portfolio includes ProVantage Testliner 3, a two-ply liner made from 100 % recycled pulp,
and ProVantage Fluting WB, which is made from recovered fibre and thus serves as an eco-friendly alternative for boxes.
The short fibres of ProVantage Testliner 3 create a very
clean and smooth surface to ensure high quality when
printing. ProVantage Fluting WB, in turn, offers excellent runnability on corrugators, good printability, and
meets the standards set by VDW, the German Association of Corrugated Board Manufacturers.
In view of the smooth paper surfaces and improved
printability of these lightweight recycled liners and flutings, ECO7 delivers high-performance benefits directly to Mondi’s customers. The entire ECO7 production
operation is FSCTM-certified.

Your benefits
• Cutting-edge technology
• High-quality lightweight recycled
containerboard
• Strategically located in central Europe
• ECO7 premium service – fast delivery option
• Environmentally sound production
•FSCTM-certified
ECO7 premium service
Mondi has also established a new service concept capable of satisfying demanding customer requirements.
As an alternative to classic procurement, customers
opting for the ECO7 premium service benefit from
smaller inventories, less working capital employed, and
short delivery times. It takes only 24 hours to deliver
orders within Poland, and 48 hours to supply neighbouring countries.
Ecological economy
Contributing to a greener future, ECO7’s state-of-theart technology minimises Mondi Świecie’s overall environmental impact. The continuous efforts made in
recent years to protect the environment are reaping
impressive rewards. Although the mill’s total paper production almost doubled between 2003 and 2012, the
mill recorded its lowest-ever CO2 emissions in 2012
ever and further decreased the amount of electricity
consumption.
One of Mondi’s long-term aims is to generate electricity
in-house, self-sufficiently. A new wastewater treatment
plant has already been installed at Świecie. It employs
anaerobic technology to produce green energy in the
form of biogas and thus reduces the consumption of
fossil fuels, such as coal. Thanks to optimised power generation systems and wastewater treatment processes, ECO7 consumes less steam, electricity and
water than other paper machines on the site.

One step ahead
with STEP21.
Stepping up to a
leading position in Europe
Mondi’s pulp and paper mill in Russia’s Komi Republic has successfully
undergone reconstruction in a € 545 million modernisation programme to
reach new levels of quality with white-top kraftliner.
The STEP project – the biggest investment in Russia’s
pulp and paper industry in the last 30 years – has transformed Mondi Syktyvkar into a Russian market leader in
containerboard. The rebuild of PM21, which produces
white-top kraftliner and liquid packaging board, marks
the culmination of this upgrading investment project. In
addition, a new emissions-reducing evaporation plant
and recovery boiler have been installed alongside a
new turbo-generator, lime kiln and wood yard.
The site’s pulp production lines, white liquor plant,
causticising facility and uncoated fine paper machine
PM14 have all been rebuilt too.
• € 545 million mill modernisation project
• State-of-the-art modernisation of PM21
• Strong and versatile white-top kraftliner
• Made of 100% high-quality northern, virgin fibre
• Excellent smoothness profile
• Appealing formation for high-definition printing
•FSC™-certified
Strong, bright, reliable
ProVantage means quality
Strong, bright, reliable – the motto of the modernisation
project for PM21 perfectly describes the advantages of
Mondi’s product range and the services available from
Syktyvkar. The main target of the PM21 rebuild was to
enhance the benefits of the high-quality, strong northern fibres it uses. Due to its excellent SCT properties
and improved stacking strength, this raw material is
ideally suited for coping with the demands of containerboard. Furthermore, bright pulp is used on the top
sheet of ProVantage Komiwhite – the resulting clean
and even surface of the presentation liner ensures brilliant printability.
Among the products produced by PM21 is ProVantage
Komiwhite, a high-quality, virgin fibre board characterised by a smooth surface, good strength, and excellent brightness and formation. It is therefore well suited
to end products whose attributes include a superior,
compelling appearance. ProVantage Komiwhite can be
safely used in packaging for dry, wet or fatty foodstuffs.
Mondi’s liquid packaging board, the double-layer kraftliner ProVantage Komipak, is suitable for combination
with polymer and barrier coatings, offering the best in
product protection together with good runnability and
printability during converting. Made from renewable resources, it is entirely recyclable and biodegradable.
Mondi Syktyvkar also focuses on customer support:
PM21’s total production capacity of 280,000 tonnes
per year makes the site a reliable supplier. Additional
benefits, including competitive lead times, are ensured
by fast and carefully selected logistics routes.

Sustainable STEPs
All the products made on PM21 conserve natural resources, as evidenced by the FSC™ certification. For
environmentally sound energy, the mill has its own
power plant running on natural gas, wood waste and
biomass. In addition, the new recovery boiler collects
and burns odorous gases. Extremely efficient filters in
the new lime kiln trap the dust produced during burning
to avoid air pollution. The new equipment also gives
rise to reductions in the amount of water taken from the
Vychegda River.

The new lightweight
paper brand.
EcoVantage: a lightweight innovation
for the non-corrugated business
Your benefits
• Wide choice of lightweight paper grades
• Smooth and calendered surface for
better printability
• New end-uses for non-corrugated applications
• FSC™ Mix
Mondi has launched three paper grades under
the brand name EcoVantage. Manufactured at
the Polish production site in Świecie, EcoVantage
Kraft X, Kraft Xlite and Kraft Top X broadens Mondi’s
portfolio of lightweight paper grades for noncorrugated application.
• Optimised composition of virgin and recycled fibres
Advantages in various applications
Approved by ISEGA, the EcoVantage grades can be
used safely in food packaging: EcoVantage Kraft X
is suitable for dry and fatty foodstuffs, Kraft Top X
for dry food, and Kraft Xlite for full food contact.
Available in a wide, low substance range, the grades offer
excellent printability because the paper is calendered.
Moreover, the new paper grades offer generally higher stiffness parameters, which improves runnability as
well as production line efficiency. Technical strides forward have allowed for downsizing in weight – resulting
in lightweight packaging solutions without any loss of
product quality.
In view of its versatility, EcoVantage is appropriate for
corrugated as well as non-corrugated applications.
EcoVantage grades can be used as paper for shoppers, as a basis for coating, for cushioning packaging
and wrapping, and many other secondary packaging
applications. All three grades are certified according to
FSC™ Mix.

The lightweight recycled containerboard manufactured
by ECO7, one of the first and fastest machines of its
kind in central Europe, is a response to the corrugated
industry’s demand for cost-effective containerboard.
The use of recycled paper is not only responsible from
a natural resource perspective, but also offers economic advantages. ProVantage Recycled Containerboard
helps to reduce waste and is the best choice for environmentally sound packaging solutions.

Mondi Štӗtí is located on the banks of the River Elbe
near Prague in the Czech Republic. With forests
covering nearly a third of the country, this location
offers an important competitive advantage. The mill
was founded in 1949. Following major investment
to boost capacity, the plant is now able to produce
more than 500,000 tonnes of containerboard, sack
kraft paper, speciality kraft paper and pulp annually.
The high-quality products are used for many purposes in the packaging industry.
Mondi Świecie, Poland
Mondi Świecie in northern Poland was founded
in 1961 as a cellulose and paper mill. Six paper
machines produce high-quality virgin and recycled
containerboard grades. ECO7 came on stream in
2009 and produces lightweight recycled testliner
and fluting grades. The mill is centrally located in
Europe and offers excellent service amenities to
supply customers as fast as possible.

Mondi Raubling, Germany
Mondi Syktyvkar, Russia
Mondi Raubling paper mill, located in Bavaria,
Germany, was established in 1908. Following more
than a century of paper production, the mill is an
established and important regional employer. Mondi Raubling is a medium-sized paper mill with two
new paper machines, a liquid board recycling facility
and a combined heat and power plant. It produces
a kraftliner substitute, as well as testliner and fluting.

Mondi Containerboard’s mill is located in Syktyvkar,
the capital of Russia’s Komi Republic, and is one of
the largest producers in the Russian pulp and paper
industry. It was established in 1969. After Mondi
became the majority shareholder in 2002 and following successive modernisation, the plant’s production output has significantly increased. The mill
produces white-top kraftliner for the production of
corrugated boxes and liquid board packaging, as
well as office, offset and printing paper.

Mondi Richards Bay, South Africa
The Mondi mill in Richards Bay, South Africa was
commissioned in 1984. In 2005, the mill underwent major expansion, which increased its capacity to more than 720,000 tonnes of paper and
market pulp a year. It produces bleached hardwood pulp made from eucalyptus fibre, and whitetop kraftliner, which is well established in both the
South African domestic and international markets.
A modernisation programme has enabled the Mondi
Richards Bay mill to reduce its environmental impact by improving air quality and reducing both
water consumption and solid waste emissions.
