The Horn Work: Charleston's Tabby Fortress

It was once part of the “Horn Work” fortification that served as the
town gate and the centerpiece of Charleston’s defenses during the
British siege of 1780. Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for an
illustrated history of this fortification from its construction in 1757
until it was demolished in 1784.

The South Carolina Heart Gallery is a collaborative effort of adoption
professionals, photographers and local businesses working together to
help children in foster care find permanent, loving homes. Portraits

Reviving "Apparently Dead" Bodies in 1790s Charleston
In 1793, the City of Charleston passed a law requiring citizens to try
to revive persons who were "apparently dead" or in a state of
"suspended animation." What was the science behind this plan to
reanimate bodies, and was it successful or simply ghoulish? Join
CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for a discussion of the fascinating
experiments that gripped Charleston and the nation in the 1790s.

Art students from St. John's High School present Portraits of
November Referendum
Do you know about CCPL’s Building and Renovation Plan and
what is proposed in your area? In November, voters will
consider a referendum to fund the construction and
renovation plan that effects every area of the county.
The plan includes construction of five new libraries - two new
branches in areas of rapid growth and three to replace
outdated facilities - plus the renovation of 13 existing
facilities and the relocation of support staff out of the Main
Library to open up that space for public use. A major focus
includes upgrading technology at all branches, including the
addition of self check-out kiosks, more public computers and
the latest equipment in public meeting rooms.
