“People say that lovers of fine cars also have a great weakness for fine
timepieces and vice versa. In both cases, sporting elegance and outstanding
performance are especially important.’’
The words spoken in 1988 by Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele
– himself a dedicated classic car enthusiast – upon launching the first Mille
Miglia collection, ring as true today as ever. The brand’s participation in many
famous classic rallies embodies a unique relationship between Chopard and
racing.
The close ties between these two worlds have been strengthened ever since,
largely due to the impressive number of common denominators that naturally
draw them together. These include constant innovation, a tireless quest for
performance and excellence, unfailing respect for traditions, the supreme
importance of details – and of course a shared passion for mechanical
engineering.
The Classic Racing collection is made up of distinctive product ranges, each
of which pays tribute in its own unique way to the world of automobiles
and motorsports: Superfast, Mille Miglia, Grand Prix de Monaco Historique,
Zagato and Jacky Ickx.
We trust that reading these pages will stir a passionate interest, just as
Chopard has been passionate about excellence since 1860.

racing in style.
As official timekeeper and world sponsor of the Mille Miglia, the
world’s most famous regularity race for classic cars, Chopard has
created a collection of watches bearing the name of this prestigious
event and which has become the brand’s unmistakable sporting
emblem.
Its unique and instantly recognisable design, together with Chopard’s
ability to constantly reinvent it without ever betraying its spirit, have
made this collection one of the greatest classics of contemporary
watchmaking. Since 1988, Chopard has drawn the inspiration for this
collection from the beauty of the wonderful cars which, once a year,
fight with each other to top the rankings in the race leading from
Brescia to Rome and back.

GRAND PRIX

MONACO HISTORIQUE
one man, one machine.
The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is the vintage version of one
of the world’s most famous Formula 1 Grand Prix races. Created
in 1998 on the occasion of the 700 th anniversary of the Grimaldi
family’s accession to the throne of the Principality, this race takes
the same course along the roads of the Monaco state, but is intended
exclusively for classic racing cars, making it an event unique in its
kind.
As official timekeeper of the event since 2002, Chopard has created
a collection of exceptional chronographs paying tribute to the
competition. Inspired by these classic cars in terms of both their
finishing and their performances, all are equipped with a calibre that
is chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing
institute (COSC).

Concentrating intensely and focused on a single-minded objective of
winning the race, the driver is geared up for action. He can already see
himself taking one bend after the other at breakneck speeds of up to
200 km/h. Even at the wheel of an historical F1 car, equipped with far fewer
safety features than their contemporary counterparts, he is determined to
outrank his rivals even at the risk of an accident. His Grand Prix de Monaco
Historique awaits the starting signal. One man, one machine.

a mindset.
The Superfast models are the superlative sports watches. Their
imposing case gives them a powerful presence on the wrist thanks
to a boldly assertive personality. Their contemporary design, their
technical characteristics and their luxurious finishing place them at
the very peak of the Classic Racing collection.
These instinctively competitive timepieces house engines boasting
performances to match their bodywork: mechanical self-winding
calibres beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a chronometer
certificate issued by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute
(COSC), the only official body in Switzerland authorised to guarantee
the precision of a movement.

ZAGATO
a shared passion.
Since 1919, the Atelier founded by Ugo Zagato has been dedicated
to creating distinctively designed bodywork. In almost a century of
history, it has worked with the greatest car manufacturers including
Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley and the brand that most
powerfully contributed to its reputation, Alfa Romeo. Having come to
specialise in extreme high-end and bespoke executions, Zagato has
remained an independent and family-owned company that cultivates
a unique aesthetic approach. Another common denominator with
Chopard is the special relationship Zagato enjoys with the Mille
Miglia, which its cars have won on numerous occasions. The first
was in 1928 and the most recent in 2012, and for both editions of
the event the wins came with the same car, an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500
TF Zagato. It was indeed along the route of this legendary race that
Chopard and Zagato began their cooperation.
Exclusive, sophisticated and inherently technical by nature, the Mille
Miglia Zagato is the fruit of the union between Chopard and the
Milan-based bodywork specialist, as well as a tip of the hat to their
shared passion for the Mille Miglia. The result is a limited edition
imbued with the grand touring spirit interpreted by Zagato and the
rigorous watchmaking standards upheld by Chopard.

JACKY ICKX
only victory counts.
Jacky Ickx is one of the most fascinating racing drivers of the 20 th
century. His career is impressive not only in terms of his many
victories, but also because of the large variety of disciplines in which
this exceptional sportsman distinguished himself. These included
Formula 1 motor-racing, car rallies, and above all the endurance races
that forged his formidable reputation – especially after winning the
Le Mans 24 Hours race six times, a feat that earned him the nickname
“Monsieur Le Mans”.
This gifted driver is also a gentleman who has made his mark on the
automobile world thanks to his fair-play and elegance. It was thus in
tribute to both his human and professional qualities that Chopard
chose to create a collection bearing his name. It is composed of
extremely sturdy models with dials designed to be ultra-legible,
even at speeds of 200 km/h, and powered by movements specially
developed to handle the timing of long-duration sports competitions
of up to 24 hours.

First victory in Le Mans…
down to the wire!
The 240,000 spectators are in the grandstands, the cars are lined up at an
angle on one side of the track and all the drivers are preparing to rush to
their speed machines and hop in. All, except one. To protest against this
type of start that he viewed as dangerous and pointless within the context
of a 24-hour race (with drivers hurtling off at dizzying speeds without
buckling their safety belts, a precaution sometimes not taken until the end
of the first relay stage), the Belgium driver decides to walk to his GT40. For
Jacky remembers only too well the accident suffered by Willy Mairesse
the previous year when he was caught in a hydroplaning tyre spin on Les
Hunaudières straight. Without the restraint of a safety belt, Willy had been
thrown from his car and severely injured. At 2 pm on June 14th 1969, Ickx
therefore strolls across the track of the 24 Hours race, as the other drivers
sprint ahead in order to jump into their cockpits. Two turns of a watch dial
later, the Belgian wins the Le Mans race by the narrowest margin in its
history: 120 metres. Never has the French expression “rien de sert de courir, il
faut partir à point” – literally meaning that there is no point running when
what really counts is a timely start – been so brilliantly demonstrated. A
page in the history of Le Mans was thus turned and the rules were modified
the following year to feature drivers already seated in the lined-up cars.
