2014 US CORN & SOYBEAN PLANTING PACE AT OR NEAR THE 5-YEAR AVERAGE
BUT…….
The USDA US crop progress report
dated May 18th, 2014 reported that
US corn planting was at 73%,
equivalent to 68 million acres with
about 24 million left to go vs. the 5
year average at 76%. Meanwhile US
soybean planting came in at 33% vs.
the 5-year average of 38%. The state
report from Illinois showed corn was
rated 62% good to excellent. USDA’s
crop progress report for the week of
May 26th, 2014 released complete
U.S. corn conditions report.
CORN
Since the USDA May WASDE report
(the first forecast of 2014/15) corn
futures have fallen on average 9.0 –
9.5% or -$0.45 to -$0.50/bushel after
climbing as much as 17-18% since the
beginning of 2014 on less than
expected 13/14 bushels on better
demand prospects. USDA is now
projecting more global corn bushels
for 14/15 and this is weighing on
futures as the funds decided to take
profits after building a “Putin” risk
premium based on Russian/Ukraine
tensions.
Less worry about the U.S. corn
planting pace was also a factor for
lower futures, but progress continues
to lag in the upper one-third of the
Corn Belt with ND, MN, WI, and MI
still having an estimated 11 million
acres left to plant as of Sunday May
18, 2014. Minnesota is 28% behind
the average pace, while Michigan is
40% behind, North Dakota is 37% and
Wisconsin is 25% behind the 5-year
average. Fortunately, the weather
has turned near ideal for planting,
with plenty of sunshine and intermittent showers. The major “I” states
(Illinois, Iowa and Indiana) have only
about 5.7 million acres left to plant.
However with many U.S. producers
up against their insurance dates, the
markets expect to see some acreage
shifted away from corn to soybeans
in the 2014 June Acreage report to be
released on June 30, 2014.
SOYBEANS
Since the beginning of 2014 soybean
futures have bucked the trend and
climbed higher on higher demand
prospects for old crop 2013/14 US
marketing year as the USDA continues
to report a very tight US soybean
ending stocks at only 130 million
bushels with a stocks to use ratio at
3.8%. Nearby soybean futures are up
on average $2.722 or +21.5% since
the beginning of 2014 hitting new
contract highs while the deferred are
up +$1.44/bushel or 12.68%. Despite
the US importing soybeans and
soybean meal from South America
the markets are still concerned about
the supply tightness as more
rationing of demand will be
needed to ramp up imports and draw
as many soybeans into the pipeline
from farmers as possible.
Northern U.S. states are also behind
for the 2014 soybean planting season
with North Dakota growers at 5%
compared with a typical 25%, while
Minnesota farmers had only 16% of
their crop in the ground, behind the
usual 45%. The November 14 soybean
vs December 14 corn futures spread
hit a 12 session high at $2.66 giving
the farmer every incentive to plant
soybeans if the corn isn’t in the
ground.

WHEAT
After bottoming in late January of
2014 at $5.60/bushel Chicago wheat
futures soared + $1.858/bushel or
33.2% on continued worries about
the hardest hit drought growing areas
of hard red winter wheat country in
the Southern U.S. Plains and
continued tensions between Ukraine
and Russia. However, after the USDA
projected higher global wheat
supplies for 2014/15 in the USDA
2014 May WASDE report, wheat prices
fell on average 12.3% as most of this
news was already factored in by the
end of April 2014. In fact, the funds
after being record short 77,000
contracts at the lows went long
45,000 contracts near the highs at
$7.44/bushel.
The condition of the drought-hit US
winter wheat deteriorated further,
dropping to its lowest rating in 18
years, fuelling concerns that rains
would come too late to foster a
recovery in yield potential. The
proportion of US winter wheat rated

“good” or “excellent” dropped 1 point
to 30%, the lowest rating for this
time of year since 1996, when 27%
of US winter wheat was viewed as
being “good” or “excellent”. Nebraska
was the hardest hit down 7% to 40%
good/excellent. The crop conditions
of the SRW wheat in Illinois and
Ohio actually continue to improve.
Drought conditions in Oklahoma
have farmers expecting only 20% of
their normal wheat yield this spring.
States like Kansas Arizona, Nevada,
New Mexico and Colorado are also
caught in extremely dry conditions.
The lack of rain over the past 4 years
in Texas has climatologists saying the
state is suffering the worst drought
conditions of the past 500 years.
Dozens of Texas communities,
especially in the southern part, are
said to have less than 90 days of
water, putting lives at risk.
