winner of the year four drawing competition held
at Rauceby School. The winning entry was from
Eloise Gasson of a solitary lamb basking in a
glorious yellow sun, with lush green grass beneath
its feet and a blue sky with fluffy clouds.
Clearly this lamb is experiencing far better weather
than we are at present, but the picture will no doubt
make us all feel that much brighter.

Deviants delights and disarms in equal measure
and provokes many different reactions; a chuckle,
a squirm, a quizzical look. Whatever the reaction,
this subversive face of craft challenges us to look
at objects with new eyes and set our imaginations
free.

ʻDeviantsʼ- Peer into the
subversive world of craft!
Deviants is a Crafts Council exhibition showing at
Hub: National Centre for Craft & Design, Sleaford,
from 26 July – 31 August 2008, 10am – 5pm, Mon
– Sun, admission is free and will be followed by a
UK tour.
Deviants is an exhibition of 16 curious pieces from
the Crafts Councilʼs Collection that deviate wildly
from what we think of as traditional craft. These
pieces are by ten of the UKʼs leading craft makers,
including Jill Crowley, Carol McNicoll, Richard
Slee and Hans Stofer. All of the makers on show
are highly skilled in the age-old techniques of their
particular craft, yet skills in the hands of these
maverick makers become utilised in very different and unusual ways. We are presented with
playful, mischievous and bizarre aberrations of
familiar objects; teapots with legs, an unfurling
jug, a pot with ears or a glove with 25 fingers. The
ordinary becomes the extraordinary and the
functional becomes the dysfunctional.
Time For A Big Picnic
The news that there is not going to be a fete this year
must have been a big disappointment to all. There
is a consolation though, as Mrs Hoare is happy to
announce that she will be opening her gardens to
all between 12 and 5pm on the 22nd of June for a
picnic.

none will be organized. This should be no hardship
as there is plenty of space for the kids to run about
in, thereby letting us old folk relax and enjoy the
afternoon.

Church News
Work has progressed well with the windows with
no unforeseen major problems identified. It is
hoped that the works should be completed with
in the next three weeks or so. The completion of
this project is seen as another important milestone
towards ensuring the well-being of the fabric of St
Peterʼs Church.

Rauceby Village Hall is proud to announce the
launch of its new website.
The site features some history about the hall, and
importantly a calendar of events. We are keen to
have any additional information about the hall,
and photographs of events held in the hall over the
years and any information that current hall users
have about their clubs and organisations. In
addition the village can help us raise funds for

Climate Change Whatʼs The Answer?
Its is a proven statistic that our county has one of
the best rates of recycling in Britain. It seems we
are deeply concerned as to the causes and effects
of climate change. It is disturbing that only a small
percentage of that waste is ever recycled. Much of
it ends up in land fill. The recycling facilities justcan not cope. Perhaps by placing it land fill, with
fifty years of nature doing its bit, the waste could
be mined for recycling.
It is amazing just what nature does for us, cleaning the
air, filtering the water amongst a few. What is the answer? When industry continues to produce accumulative toxins and dumps into the waterways and oceans,
affecting not only the water but all the organisms within
it, not to mention air pollution.
We expect developing nations to listen to the mistakes
that we have already made. Will they listen? Doubtful,
after all they are all fighting for their own economic
growth.
We put up with soaring taxes on fuel and road tax, when
the percentage of pollution of entire planets road vehicles amounts to about 5% of the damage caused to the
environment.

We need to demand that hydrogen powered vehicles are
made affordable and available to all. The fuel industries
have world-wide control of government policies. Their
influence needs to be expunged. What of the factors that
contribute to the other 95% of damage to the environment. Are these being addressed?
If we are going to make a difference, then as consumers
we need to force industry and the worlds economy to
change. Perhaps by the way we consume. Perhaps by
buying locally farmed produce, limiting travel, insisting
on non fossil fuel forms of transportation and energy,
planting more trees, and taking a good look at our consumption and what it means to the planet, then we could
make a difference.

The daylight hours are lengthening and, hopefully,
as warm weather is on the way many villagers will
be spending more time in their gardens. It is now
a good time to check the locks on your sheds and
ensure that mowers and other equipment is stored
securely overnight. Security marking of valuable
gardening tools is always a wise precaution, and
whilst marking doesnʼt guarantee the safety of your
items it does make them a lot easier to identify if
they are recovered later.
If things are going to improve we need to do something.
We canʼt just rely on the politicians. Itʼs everybodyʼs
responsibility. It would be nice for future generations to
look back at this time in our history and see that we all
cared enough to make a difference. To see this as a revolution, a turning point, a new age. Itʼs not about flower
power, its about our survival and that of our planet, as
we know it.
Please remember to cancel newspapers ( including
the Target ) and instruct the Post Office to hold your
mail if you are away on holiday. It is also wise to
ask a neighbour to put out your bins and look out
for any deliveries during your absence. There are
many tell-tale signs that opportunist burglars look
for. Donʼt give them any clues.
We need to do something today, not tomorrow, or next
week, but TODAY!.
Lincolnshire Police are regularly sending

concerning ʻdistraction burglaries.ʼ There have
been several incidences in the surrounding area this
year and we need to be vigilant. As most of you will
know this is the practice where one person keeps a
householder in conversation at the front door whilst
his/her accomplices sneaks around to the rear of the
premises and enters via the backdoor searching for
money and valuables.
Changing a light bulb to a low energy bulb is not enough,
when the energy it uses is produced from fossil fuels.
We need to demand that our energy only comes from
renewable sources.

At our AGM in April Simon Bland joined the
committee and Paula Ireland became the new hall
secretary following retirement of Jean Ward. Simon
has set up a Village Hall website so anyone with
access can now find out all about the hall, our
programme of activities and much more by going to

contribute this piece to the Rauceby Parish News for
those of you, who, like myself have not kept pace with
modern technology. There will of course be far
more information on the website and it will be
regularly updated. SO WHY NOT VISIT OUR

News From The Parish
Council
Simon Frere-Cook - Chairman
CHAIRMANʼS REPORT FOR YEAR
MAY 2007 – MAY 2008
The Council met on 6 occasions throughout the past
year (May, July, September, November, January
and March). I would like to thank the Parish Councillors for the time and effort that they have individually and collectively put in during the year on
behalf of the Parish, and particularly I would like to
thank Mrs Niki Orley, our Clerk, for the work that
she has done on our behalf during the year.
At its meetings, the Council has been well supported by Councillor Mrs Susan Waring, our District
Councillor, and Councillor Barry Singleton, our
County Councillor, and I would like to thank them
for their support.

we received less complaints than usual. As with
all such matters, it is down to resources within the
District Council.
Parish Inspection – we have not received an
annual visit and inspection since Mar 2007, but
I am pleased to report that the points that were
discussed then have all been actioned, particularly
the kerbing of the roadside at the top of Thorpe
Drove and the edge repairs along Rauceby Drove.
We will, I hope, be having a 2008 visit from the
Sleaford District Highways Area Manager for LCC,
Mr Ian Cummings, in the near future.
Parish Partnership – Cluster Group – Cllr Ian
Graham represented the Parish at a District Council
meeting on the subject of Parish Partnerships and
how this might affect Rauceby Parish Council. It
was his recommendation that the Parish Council
need not be actively involved with the group as
there was no benefit to be gained but that we should
maintain contact for future reference. This is what
we are doing.
I would also like to thank on your behalf our Neighbourhood Policing Team Manager, Constable Andy
Ross, and our local Police Community Support
Officer, PCSO Colin Ironmonger, for the support
and advice that they have offered our community
throughout the year. Fortunately we are in a relatively low crime area in Rauceby, but they have
always been available when required and I am
pleased to report that we are involved in the Neighbourhood Policing Model.
Jim Holton Memorial Bench – the Parish
Council were in favour of a hardwood bench being placed on Rauceby Drove in memory of
Jim Holton and accordingly commissioned Peter Tree to make one for an agreed sum of
£350.00. The bench should have been installed
before Easter but this has been delayed slightly.
I am pleased to report that as a council we have not
had to deal with any major issues during the past
year but I would just like to inform you of a few of
the matters that have concerned us:
South Rauceby Drains – the matter of the foul
smelling drains on the corner by The Manor in
South Rauceby is on the Councilʼs agenda as a
priority.
Planning Permissions – The Councilʼs Planning Sub-Committee addressed all applications in
an appropriate manner, making reference to the
full Council and submitting representations when
necessary. We have continued to monitor the
developments at Greylees and Boiling Wells Farm
and we will continue to do so.
To conclude this Annual Report I would like to thank
on your behalf ; Mrs Annie Higginson, for cleaning
our bus shelters throughout the year. Mr Jonathan
Hoare and his team of contributors and helpers for
the Parish Newsletter which is a very commendable
publication. Mr Albert Whitton – trimming verges
around trees/signs in South Rauceby.
Traffic Through The Village – The Council
continues to express its concern at the increasing
volume of traffic that passes through the village
– speed limits and weight restrictions are under
constant review.
Those residents of North Ruaceby who maintain
the area around the Butter Cross in such a neat and
tidy state throughout the year. Without singling out
any individuals, all those members of the parish
who collect ever increasing amounts of litter that
are dumped on the verges and elsewhere.
Road Sweeping – The Council has continually
pestered the District Council about the road
sweeping in the village in the autumn and winter.

Eric Bellamy
04/09/1934 to 20/02/2008
Mr. George Eric Bellamy, aged 73, died suddenly
on 20th February in South Rauceby. He leaves his
wife Stella, daughter Sue, son Colin, daughter-inlaw Nicky and two grandchildren, Alys and Harry.
Eric was born in Rauceby and lived here throughout his life. He attended the village school, moving
on to Sleaford Secondary Modern School before
leaving to work on the family farm. He continued
with this career until his recent retirement.
Laurence Winter
14/09/1942 to 12/04/2008
Laurence Winter or Lol as he liked to be known
was born at Crowland Farm, Ancaster. He went to
Wilsford primary school where he first met Doris
