This nationally acclaimed food festival celebrates watercress - the superb
locally grown, delicious and versatile crop - and draws together the local
community and food lovers from far and wide for a day of food and fun.
In Broad Street you will find a huge
food market and award-winning
chefs and food writers giving cookery
demonstrations. A large festival market
in West Street and Station Road
features arts, crafts, jewellery and
clothing, items for house and garden
and much else besides. Many local
charities and voluntary organisations
will be providing an insight into
Alresford’s rich community life.
One of the main highlights of the
festival is the street cavalcade at
10.30am with jazz musicians, Morris
dancers and local school children
accompanying the Watercress King
and Queen atop a horse and cart
distributing the first of the season’s
watercress harvest to festival goers.
Throughout the day, there are activities
for children of all ages, including circus
skills workshops, face painting, a
magician, treasure trails, climbing wall
and a petting farm. Everyone is sure to
enjoy the delights of the many street
entertainers and musicians.
be a starter, main or even a watercress
dessert! See page 14 for more details.
If you would like to find out more about
this local superfood, why not take a
watercress farm tour (as spaces are
limited, you are encouraged to prebook, please see page 4 for details).
If you have time, you might also like
to visit the medieval Soke Bridge at the
bottom of Broad Street and Alresford’s
historic Fulling Mill and Eel House found
on a short walk along the banks of the
picturesque River Arle.
There’s plenty of festival parking in
Alresford and Ropley, from where you
can enjoy a FREE return train ride into
the festival on the famous Watercress
Line heritage railway. See page 10 for
full directions and parking details.
Finally, we look forward to meeting you
on the 16th May and hope that you
will be delighted with what the festival
and the town of New Alresford have to
offer, and that you have a thoroughly
enjoyable day out!
We are also delighted to announce

Watercress has been cultivated in the pure spring waters of southern England since the
early 1800s, earning it the accolade of the UK’s most historic salad leaf, but how much do
you know about this natural superfood?
Watercress has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient times. The Greek general
Xenophon ensured his soldiers ate it as a tonic and Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is
thought to have decided on the location of his first hospital because of its proximity to a
stream so he could use only the freshest watercress to treat his patients.
2
Gram for gram, watercress contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk
and more iron than spinach.
3
A dietary trial conducted by the University of Ulster in 2007 showed that eating watercress
daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells, which is considered to be an
important trigger in the development of cancer. Further research has been undertaken
among breast cancer patients at Southampton University.
4
Alresford is known as the UK’s capital of watercress farming. During its heyday in the
Victorian times, the Watercress Line steam railway used to transport tonnes of the plant
up to the Old Covent Garden Market. Street sellers would make it into bunches and wrap
them in paper so it could be eaten like an ice cream cone – the first “on the go” food.
5
Eliza James, who started selling watercress at the age of 5 to Birmingham factory workers,
went on to become a millionaire, opening up vast watercress beds across Surrey and
Hampshire. She was known as the “Watercress Queen” and despite her wealth still turned
up every morning to work her stall at Covent Garden Market.
6
Watercress is a member of the healthy brassica family and is related to broccoli, cabbage,
brussel sprouts, cauliflower, rocket and radish – it should not be confused with mustard and
cress, a different species.
7
Watercress is a staple food among the Chinese, who believe that it brings the body back
into balance, holistically and nutritionally.
8
Watercress is a semi aquatic plant and grows in the most idyllic of circumstances, alongside
streams and rivers where the springs rise. Farmers harness this water directly from the
spring deep underground and channel it through their shallow gravel watercress beds.
Find out more on free tours running during the Watercress Festival on 16 May at
Pinglestone watercress farm (ring 01264 732034 to book a place on the 11.30 a.m. or 1.30
sessions) or Manor watercress farm (ring 01929 463241 for the 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. sessions).
Both are just a short stroll from Alresford’s Broad Street where the festival is taking place.
9
Watercress literally oozes beta-carotene which is needed for healthy skin and eyes. No
wonder 17th Century philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon claimed it could “restore a
youthful bloom to women.”
10
Liz Hurley is a huge watercress fan and is known to cook up large vats of watercress soup
when she is on one of her famous diets. For the recipe log onto www.watercress.co.uk

The Alresford Watercress Festival owes a huge amount to the many local volunteers who work
tirelessly during the months leading up to the festival and on the day itself.
Teams and individuals will be busy booking performers, children’s entertainers, celebrity
chefs and stall-holders, inviting entries for the Eateries and Food Awards, liaising with the
Emergency Services and licensing authorities, issuing Press releases, designing artwork and
writing copy for the programme, flyer, poster and website. Others will arrange the logistics
including traffic signs, loos, stage, cookery demo unit, power supplies, walkie-talkies, etc.
On the day of the festival, over 100 volunteers will manage car parks, man traffic barriers,
assist set-up the markets, ensure the site is neat, tidy and litter-free, provide assistance to
many of the 10,000 visitors expected and perform numerous other tasks...always striving to
ensure that visitors have a happy, enjoyable and truly memorable time at the festival.
Their efforts ensure that the festival continues to feature as such an important event in
the town’s calendar. They also give a very good impression of a team who are enjoying
themselves!
The organisations involved are
Alresford Rugby Club
Old Alresford Cricket Club
Alresford Young Farmers
Alresford PIGS Association
Alresford Rotary Club
Alresford & Cheriton Scout Group
The same sentiments can also be expressed of the sponsors, partners and advertisers without
