GOL FH Summer Newsletter - Gift of Life Donor Program
UPDaTe SUMMER 2012 www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org ONE year. One mission. One family at a time. It all starts with you. 2012 Summer Fundraising Campaign Happy 1st Birthday Gift of Life Family House! Help us celebrate by supporting transplant families this summer. In Gift of Life Family House’s first year of operation, members of the community have come together to help us fulfill our mission to support transplant families. As of June 2012, the Family House has provided over 2,000 nights of care to transplant patients and their families. Through our volunteer training programs, 105 guest services volunteers have been trained, accumulating over 5,500 hours of service, dedicating themselves to making transplant families feel at home. Community members have also aided in the success of providing a “home away from home” to our families by participating in our Home Cook Heroes program, which has provided over 7,500 meals to our guests! To celebrate the one-year birthday of our opening, and to ensure we can continue to provide comfort to families, we have launched our 2012 summer fundraising campaign: ONE YEAR, ONE MISSION, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME – and it all starts with YOU to support our Adopt-A-Family Program. continued on Family House page 2 A Day of Dedication On Sunday, May 6, 2012, close to 400 members of Gift of Life’s community of contributors, volunteers, and advocates were reunited for a special celebration to formally dedicate Gift of Life Family House. continued on Family House page 2 Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley (l) with President and CEO of Gift of Life Donor Program, Howard M. Nathan (c) and Founders’ Circle Member and volunteer, Sandi Petrelli of Haddonfield, NJ. Non-profit Org. U.S. Postage Paid Philadelphia, PA Permit No. 862 ONE YEAR, continued from Family House page 1 The transplant process usually requires weeks or months of treatment and long-term access to physicians and hospitals for follow-up care. Many families cannot afford even the minimum payment of $40.00 per night. The Family House is committed to providing a “home away from home” for all eligible families regardless of their ability to pay. This requires a collaborative and community-focused approach to funding. The Adopt-A-Family Program provides support for those families who are unable to pay the nightly fee – especially for an extended period of time. In addition, funds raised through the Adopt-A-Family Program are used to offset the difference between the actual operating costs ($150) and the amount families are asked to pay ($40) for a night’s lodging and services. the warmth and comforts of home to transplant patients and their families receiving treatment in the Philadelphia region. Please help make our birthday wish come true: our wish that we can support each family who needs the Family House, regardless of their ability to pay. Through your continued generosity, we will be able to help support transplant families – one night at a time. Each $40 contribution helps support one night of lodging for a family staying at the Family House. To make a tax-deductible contribution, visit www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org Without the outpouring of support from our families, friends, and volunteers, the Family House would not have been able to provide or use the donation envelope included in this newsletter DEDICATION, continued from Family House page 1 Join in the The program’s emcee was former Gift of Life board member and bone marrow donor, Dave Huddleston, and included special guest speakers: President and CEO of Gift of Life Donor Program, Howard M. Nathan; Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley; Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Director of Commerce, Alan Greenberger; and Family House Guest, Julie Keeton. A Citation from the City of Philadelphia was presented by Philadelphia City Councilmen, Mark Squilla and Jim Kenney. Family Circle and support Transplant Families We invite you to partner with us in supporting the families of transplant patients who call the Family House their “home away from home”. The Family Circle is an annual giving program composed of generous contributors who donate $250 or more annually to support Gift of Life Family House. Following an exciting Family House construction time lapse video presentation, the beautiful Primary Contributors Wall was unveiled for everyone to see. Gift of Life Family House is grateful to its Founders’ Circle members, Family Circle members, and volunteers for their support, and extends a very special thank you to all of the donor families and living donors who have given the gift of life – without them, transplantation could not be possible. Financial contributions to the Family House annual fund ensures the circle of care is complete for transplant families by easing the financial stresses through complimentary services and creating a nurturing environment of care and support. Among other benefits, Family Circle members will have their name displayed on the Gift of Life Family House Primary Contributors Wall located in the lobby of the Family House for one year and an invitation to a special yearly President’s Reception. Your gift can underwrite several weeks’ accommodations or sustain the Family House in many meaningful ways...become a Family Circle Member today! If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to join the FAMILY CIRCLE today, visit www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org. Temple University Fox School of Business professional organization Gamma Iota Sigma raised money for Gift of Life Family House by holding numerous events throughout campus, ranging from a date auction to bake sales. The $25,000 raised will be used to underwrite a guest room at Gift of Life Family House in memory of Eric Smith and Kevin Kless. The Kless and Smith families were on hand for the check presentation, along with representatives from Gift of Life Family House and members of Gamma Iota Sigma. Families of Eric Smith and Kevin Kless pose with members of Temple’s Gamma Iota Sigma as they present a check to Gift of Life Family House to help underwrite a guest room in memory of the two alumni. COOKING FOR A CAUSE The Home Cook Heroes program at Gift of Life Family House is one of the best ways for members of the community to get a firsthand look into the everyday happenings at the House. Volunteer groups, who many times have a direct connection to organ transplantation, can meet the families that their time, hard work, and contributions directly benefit, and it has proven to be a worthwhile and heartwarming experience for both volunteers and the families staying with us. Not only do they provide a delicious meal almost every month, but they usually choose a theme for the evening and bring decorations to liven up the kitchen and dining room! Their themes have ranged from Backyard Summer BBQ to Mardi Gras night – and their spirit and excitement about the mission always makes for a great night of fun! Team Spiers includes the family and friends of Kevin Spiers, a young man who died suddenly at the age of 22. According to his family, Kevin was an “outstanding young man who loved his family, friends, and life itself. His vibrant personality was infectious. Kevin had many special qualities; one of those qualities was his willingness to help others, whether it was a family member, friend, or someone he just met.” When Kevin passed away, he left behind the ultimate gift – the gift of life – when his organs and tissue were donated. To keep Kevin’s memory alive and to reflect on the importance of organ and tissue donation, ‘Team Spiers’ chose to become Home Cook Heroes at the Family House. They are able to speak face-to-face with families of transplant recipients and caregivers of people awaiting their life-saving transplant, which, according to them, has been a “gratifying and rewarding” experience. 3 Lila Kaplan & Friends Minds Matter of Philadelphia Missy Gurmankin Mount Carmel Teenshop Omni Hotel at Independence Park Pat’s Wings PCP Operation Heart Penney Girls Foundation Project Management Institute Quadira and Jamie Queen of Hearts Foundation Queen of the Universe Youth Group Randon Family Riesenbach Family Rowan University Volunteers Rutger’s Gang Ryan Sheffer & Friends Sinkus & Vendetti Families Starbucks Philadelphia SuperFresh Markets Taste the Difference Team C Transplant Coordinators Team Spiers The Lawrenceville School The Otto Family Thomas Jefferson Heart Transplant Thomas Jefferson Respiratory Department Thomas Jefferson University Hospital MCCU/SCCU University City Kiwanis UPenn Circle K UPenn Physical Therapy Department West Chester Circle K West Chester Kiwanis Are you interested in the Home Cook Heroes program? Getting exercise also seems easier, since warmer weather allows for more outdoor activities like walking or playing games. A special recipe to help transplant caregivers stay healthy this summer. However, with summer months also come BBQs and parties, where healthy foods are not always available. When attending a party you can certainly eat the food you love, but stick with smaller portions to avoid overeating and excess. Below is a great healthy and fun summer recipe you can try. Bring it to your next gathering – that way you know you’ll have something healthy to snack on while you’re out!
