FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS
Maak vóór de start en landing uw stoelriemen vast. Maak ze niet los, zolang het bordje
'fasten seat belts' is verlicht. Uit voorzorg kunt u uw riem de gehele reis losjes omhouden.
FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS
ONTSPANNING
Wij kunnen u voorzien van kranten en tijdschriften. Op de mid-Atlantische route
(Paramaribo-Amsterdam v.v.) kunt u met uw koptelefoon genieten van films en aangename muziek.
Door de atmosfeer in de cabine en het stilzitten kunnen uw voeten opzwellen.
Draag daarom ruimzittende schoenen of slippers.
SPECIALE MAALTIJDEN
Gebruikt u op doktersvoorschrift of uit geloofsovertuiging speciale maaltijden, dan serveren
wij die graag. Maak uw verzoeken duidelijk kenbaar bij de reservering van uw vlucht.
GEZONDHEID
In het vliegtuig is de lucht droger dan daarbuiten. Drink daarom zoveel mogelijk tijdens een
vlucht. Alcohol, koffie en thee onttrekken vocht aan het lichaam, beperk daarom het
gebruik. Beweeg (zeker op lange vluchten) zoveel mogelijk. Op pagina 78 staan oefeningen
die u in uw stoel kunt doen. De boordapotheek bevat medicijnen voor de meest voorkomende
kwaaltjes. Gebruikt u medicijnen, neem die dan altijd mee in uw handbagage.
KINDEREN
Reist u met een baby? De steward(ess) maakt graag het flesje klaar.Waarschuw op tijd, dan
hoeft uw kleintje niet te wachten. Op de mid-Atlantische route (Paramaribo-Amsterdam v.v.)
kunnen wij ook voor babyvoeding en luiers zorgen. Voor grotere kinderen hebben wij op die
route speelgoed en boeken beschikbaar. Laat kinderen veel drinken. Geeft u borstvoeding,
drink dan zelf ook meer dan normaal. Geef de baby eventueel extra (lauw) mineraalwater.
Geef uw baby bij start en landing een fopspeen of flesje met drinken, om de druk op de
trommelvliezen te verminderen. Een ouder kind geeft u een zuigsnoepje of stukje
kauwgum. Zelf kunt u eventueel ook geeuwen of slikken om de druk te verminderen.
ELECTRONISCHE APPARATUUR
In het vliegtuig mag u geen apparaten gebruiken waarin een zender of ontvanger zijn
verwerkt. Radio's, mobiele telefoons, laptops en televisies werken namelijk storend op het
gevoelige navigatiesysteem van een vliegtuig.
HANDBAGAGE
Iedere passagier mag één (1) stuk handbagage meenemen. Dat moet van een dergelijk formaat
zijn dat u het kwijt kunt onder uw stoel.
De bergplaatsen boven uw hoofd zijn alleen bestemd voor lichte artikelen, zoals hoeden,
mantels, bloemen en andere lichte artikelen. Open de klep voorzichtig, zodat er geen
spullen uit vallen.
BAGAGE
Volwassenen en kinderen vanaf 2 jaar mogen tussen Paramaribo en Amsterdam maximaal
1 stuk van maximaal 25 kilo (54 lbs) meenemen in de Tourist Class. In de Business Class geldt
2 stuks van elk maximaal 32 kg (70 lbs). Op vluchten van en naar de Verenigde Staten geldt een
andere regeling. Daar mag elke passagier twee stuks bagage meenemen, met een afmeting van
maximaal 158 cm (62 inch) (lengte + breedte + hoogte) en een gewicht van maximaal 23 kg (50 lbs).
Heeft u meer bagage, dan moet u bijbetalen.
Voorzie zowel de binnen- als buitenkant van uw bagage van adresstickers. Deze hoeven
aan de buitenkant niet voor iedereen leesbaar te zijn.
HERBEVESTIGING
Verblijft u ergens langer dan 72 uur, dan moet u tenminste 72 uur vóór vertrek uw gereserveerde
door- of terugreis opnieuw bevestigen. Op de vluchten Paramaribo-Amsterdam v.v. is deze regel
niet van toepassing. Wenst u een aangepaste maaltijd, rolstoelservice of andere bijzondere
dienstverlening, dan is het verstandig om dit verzoek opnieuw te bevestigen.

RELAXATION
A selection of international newspapers and magazines is available on the mid-Atlantic
route (Paramaribo-Amsterdam v.v.). And you can also enjoy music and films via headsets.
Because of the cabin pressure and enforced sitting for several hours, your feet may become
swollen. Wear, therefore, roomy shoes or slippers.
SPECIAL MEALS
Special meal requests, either because of medical or religious reasons can be fulfilled.
Please advise us of this when making flight reservations.
HEALTH
The atmosphere inside the aircraft is dryer than that on the ground, therefore you should
drink as much as possible during a flight. Alcohol, coffee and tea however, remove fluids
from the body. Use these stimulants as little as possible. Move about as much as possible
(especially on longer flights). On page 66 you will find exercises which you can do while
sitting in your aircraft seat. The medical dispensary on board contains medicine for the
most anticipated minor complaints. If you take medicine regularly, be sure to always place
this in your hand baggage.
CHILDREN:
Are you traveling with a baby? The steward(ess) will gladly prepare the baby bottle for
you. Please give sufficient advance notice so that your baby does not have to wait. On the
mid-Atlantic route (Paramaribo-Amsterdam v.v.) we can also provide baby food and diapers.
For older children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must
drink a lot. If you are breast-feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give the
baby also, extra tepid mineral water. By take off and landing, give your baby a pacifier or a
bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give an older child either candy
or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or swallow to lessen the pressure.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use electric equipment with transmitters
and receivers. In addition, radios, cellular phones, laptops and televisions disrupt the sensitive
navigation system and are not allowed.
HAND LUGGAGE
Every passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry on hand luggage that fits easily under the
aircraft seat. The luggage bins above your head are only intended for light articles such as hats,
coats, flowers etc. Open the flap carefully so that items do not fall out.
LUGGAGE
On the route between Paramaribo and Amsterdam, adults and children from the age of
2, are allowed 1 piece of maximum 25 kilo (54 lbs) luggage in Tourist class, and 2 pieces of
32 kilo (70 lbs) maximum in Business class. Different luggage regulations apply on flights
to and from the United States. On this route every passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of
luggage with a maximum dimension of 158 cm. (62 in.) (Length + width + height) and a
maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs). If you have additional luggage then there is an excess
baggage fee. Please place address stickers on both the interior and exterior of your luggage.
On the exterior, these don’t have to be readable for everyone.
RECONFIRMATION
If you are staying for longer than 72 hours, then at least 72 hours before your departure,
you are asked to reconfirm your flight. On flights between Paramaribo and Amsterdam this
rule is not applicable. If you require adjusted meals, wheelchair service or other special
services, then please place your requests when reconfirming.

Ervaar de betekenis van een gastvrij onthaal. Haast betekent in Suriname niet ‘geen tijd hebben
voor een ander’. Integendeel. Idyllische plekjes zijn vooral in de districten, waar,

Jovialiteit is voor iedere Surinamer een tweede natuur.
Je zult je als gast dan ook heel gauw ‘thuis’ voelen.
Kunst kijken in Suriname is een belevenis. Bouwkunst,
houtsnijwerk, beeldende kunst en schilderkunst.
Land van water is de betekenis van het oud Indiaans
woord Guaiana, waar Suriname deel van uitmaakt.
Muziek, zang en dans zijn een trits. De Surinaamse
muziek wordt gekenmerkt door een grote verscheidenheid in toon en in ritme, waar onmiskenbaar tonen in
door klinken die hun oorsprong hebben in Afrika, Azië
en Europa. Geen nood; laat je meeslepen, gooi gerust
de beentjes los.
Natuurlijke grenzen markeren het Surinaams territoir,
met in het oosten Frans-Guiana, Guyana in het westen,
Brazilië in het zuiden en in het noorden de Atlantische
Oceaan.
Openlucht recreatie is in Suriname precies wat
daarmee bedoeld wordt. Het klimaat leent zich daar
ook voor en er zijn mogelijkheden te over.

Palmenstranden zul je in Suriname niet vinden.
Behalve dan bij Galibi, een Indiaans dorp aan de
monding van de Marowijnerivier. Op ongeveer een uur
gaans van dit dorp ligt het unieke natuurreservaat
Babunsanti waar jaarlijks tussen februari en augustus
duizenden reuzenzeeschildpadden op de ongerepte
zandstranden hun eieren komen leggen.
Quarteronen, halfbloeden in Latijns-Amerika, van
wie één van de grootouders van een ander ras is, kom
je in Suriname overal tegen. Maar...you’ll see friends

yourself “what a wonderful world.” En dat is het ook.

Uniek in de wereld zijn de naast elkaar gelegen moskee
en joodse synagoge in het centrum van Paramaribo.
Verdraagzaamheid en respect voor elkaar, elkaars cultuur, elkaars geloof, elkaars politieke overtuiging zijn
wezenskenmerken van de multi-etnische samenleving
van Suriname.

Kabalebo. waar je een verkwikkende douche kan

Al jaren worden wereldwijd spirituele en magische reizen georganiseerd.
Zo kan in India onder begeleiding van begaafde Guru’s worden gemediteerd
aan de Ganges. Op Bali kan een bezoek worden gebracht aan de eilanden
van de Goden, in Peru kan men tegen betaling een spoedcursus volgen
aan de leerstoel van een wijze Sjamaan. En in Occitanië (een deel van zuid
Frankrijk) kan men een speciale ode brengen aan Moeder Aarde. Deze met
spirituele franje omhangen reizen worden natuurlijk niet zonder doel aangeboden.

Een ander soort toerisme dat enigszins lijkt op
spiritueel toerisme (en er eigenlijk mee verweven is) is mystiek toerisme. In tegenstelling
tot spiritueel toerisme, waar alles draait om
het geestelijk welbehagen, staat bij mystiek
toerisme het mysterieuze, het raadselachtige,
centraal.
De term mystiek verwijst ook naar de achterliggende leer over kennis en persoonlijke ervaringen van toestanden van bewustzijn voorbij
de normale menselijke perceptie. Er bestaan
natuurlijke en religieuze mystieke ervaringen.
Natuurlijke mystieke ervaringen zijn bijvoorbeeld het gevoel dat ervaren wordt één te zijn
met de natuur tijdens een lange boswandeling.
Onafhankelijkheidsplein in Paramaribo, is een

en parfums gemaakt voor een gezamenlijke
wasi.
Je hoeft je daarbij niet per se een te voelen met

There are natural and mystical religious experiences. Natural mystical experiences include
the feeling that is experienced to be one with
nature during a long walk in the woods. These
kinds of experiences are of an entirely different
nature than the religious mystical experiences,
especially because they are passive. It usually
‘happens’ to someone not actively pursuing
the experience. Natural mystical experiences
are not regarded as religious experiences because they are not associated with a particular
tradition. They are of course spiritual experiences that can have a profound impact on the
individual. Religious mystical experiences are
often more active than passive natural experience.
The mystical experience can be evoked
through prayer, contemplation or meditation.
You do not thereby necessarily feel one with
the Gods, with hidden forces or with the center
of the earth, but just out of curiosity you visit
a site that has to do with mystery. And such
places are to be found in Suriname!
Mysticism in the interior
For years spiritual and magical tours have been organized worldwide. It is
possible for instance to meditate at the River Ganges in India under the
guidance of gifted gurus. On Bali a visit can be organized to the islands of
the Gods. In Peru it is possible to attend a crash course at the chair of a wise
shaman. And in Occitania (a part of Southern France, Monaco, Italy and
Spain) one can bring a tribute to Mother Earth. These travels adorned with
spiritual frills are of course not offered without a purpose.

ccording to the Hyves* website of spiritual travels, trips abroad that have a
strengthening influence on the experience of the spiritual, are on the rise.
This data is confirmed in the thesis of B.A.
Simon (Faculty for Social and Behavioral
sciences at the University of Amsterdam,
2007) which indicates that the number of
tourists traveling to South-America for a spiritual experience is significantly rising.

Spiritual travels to our country take place as
well. Among many Dutch from Surinamese
descent for instance, taking part in a Winti
pré and the taking of a Wasi, especially at or
around the turn of the year, is a well-known
travel destination.
The word mysticism comes from the Greek
adjective ‘mustikos’ that means ‘connected
to the secrets. It is associated with the verbs
‘muoo’, closing eyes and mouth and ‘mueoo’,
initiated in the Mysteries. For starters, the
medicine of the Maroons and Amerindians,
which often can not be explained by conventional medicine, offer a range of options for
mysticism tourism. Treatment methods and
Winti pré is a ritual dance evening in honor of
the Gods, the Winti. During such a dance participants get into trance and the spirits take
possession of their bodies. The swietwatra
wasi, which is gradually becoming a tradition,
is held on New Year’s Eve at the Independence
square in Paramaribo, is a (purification) bath
with delightfully smelling herbs and perfumes
made for a collective wasi.
Another kind of tourism that somewhat resembles spiritual tourism (and is actually interwoven with it) is mystical tourism. Unlike
spiritual tourism, where everything revolves
around the spiritual well-being, the focus point
for mystical tourism is the enigmatic.
The term also refers to the underlying doctrine
of knowledge and personal experiences of
states of consciousness beyond normal human perception.

traditional rites that accompany it can be
demonstrated in a flamboyant manner, without losing the authenticity of the uses.
The Tampioca Rock in Corneliskondre is probably a meteorite that came down somewhere
in the history of our country. Presumably, because it was never officially confirmed. The
date of impact is not known either, only that
it is a huge rock that could not originate from
this planet. The rumor goes that on the ridge
of the Tumak Humak Mountains, which forms
the southern border with Brazil, an ancient
“gate” must exist. Where that gate could lead
to is all mystery.
Enough reasons to awaken the interest of
the mysticism tourist, so he decides to come
in person to get convinced. That means right
away an expansion of Suriname’s tourism
product.
In the wake of the Hippies
Mysticism tourism exerts significant global
appeal to a fairly wide audience. The basis for
this form of tourism was in the seventies of the
last century by the then growing popularity of
the so-called “hippie trail”, the overland route
from Europe to India and Nepal. The Hippies
are youngsters from the sixties to seventies
who wanted to live in their own way.
They wore colorful, loose clothes that were
often decorated with flowers. Therefore the
hippie culture was also called ‘Flower Power’.
Some hippies spoke of themselves as the
“flower children”. Both boys and girls had long
hair. That generation went to India late sixties
and early seventies and took the mysticism,
spirituality and the cultural diversity of India to
the attention of large groups staying at home,
resulting in a rapidly increasing interest in that
country.
Mysticism is not a theory, not a doctrine nor
rational conviction but an experience of the
Transcendent: that which is outside the world
of experience, the supernatural, the transcendental and the extrasensory.
If the mysteries Suriname holds are well
mapped and added to the other already
known attractions, we can offer a tourist product that few countries in our region can match.
This is now underway.
Suriname lures ...
Meanwhile mystical tourism has moved from
India and Nepal to among others South America
where Shamanism draws a lot of attention.
The target group no longer consists of longhaired pot-smoking backpackers who are
looking for themselves in others, but of people
who have a special interest for, and are very
curious about the inexplicable.
Mysticism tourists are seeking spiritual forces
in the Andes. In the book ‘Mystical Tourism:
Parody or Meaning’ writer Ruben Villa Pilares
looks for an explanation for the rise of mysticism tourism since the beginning of the seventies of the 20th century. After the first hippies first surrounded the East with a mystical
aura, the ‘spiritual supermarket’ slowly moved
to the Andes when more books there referred
to it.

Mystiek in het binnenland
Het woord mystiek komt van het Griekse bijvoeglijke naamwoord ‘mustikos’ dat ‘met de
geheimen verbonden’ betekent. Het wordt in
verband gebracht met de werkwoorden ‘muoo’,
sluiten van ogen en mond en ‘mueoo’, inwijden
in de mysteriën.
Om te beginnen bieden de geneeswijzen van
de marrons en inheemsen, die dikwijls niet te
verklaren zijn door de reguliere geneeskunde,
een scala aan mogelijkheden voor mystiek
toerisme. Behandelmethoden en de traditionele riten die daarmee gepaard gaan kunnen
op zwierige wijze worden gedemonstreerd,
zonder de authenticiteit van de gebruiken te
verliezen.
De Rots van Tampioca in Corneliskondre is
vermoedelijk een meteoriet die ergens in de
geschiedenis van ons land daar is neergekomen. Vermoedelijk, want officieel is dit nooit
bevestigd. Ook de datum van de inslag is niet
bekend, alleen dat het gaat om een enorm gesteente dat niet van deze planeet afkomstig is
of kan zijn.
Het gerucht doet de ronde dat zich op de bergrug van de Tumuk Humak, die de zuidgrens
met Brazilië vormt, een eeuwenoude ‘poort’
moet bevinden. Waar die poort naartoe zou

leiden is een en al mysterie. Redenen genoeg
dus om de belangstelling van de mystiek toerist te wekken, zodanig dat hij besluit om zich
daar persoonlijk van te komen overtuigen. Dat
betekent dan gelijk een verruiming van het
toeristisch product van Suriname.
In het spoor van de Hippies
Mystiek toerisme oefent wereldwijd grote
aantrekkingskracht uit op een vrij brede doelgroep. De basis voor deze vorm van toerisme
werd in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw
gelegd door de toen groeiende populariteit
van de zogeheten “Hippie trail”, de reisroute
over land van Europa naar India en Nepal.
De Hippies zijn jongeren uit de jaren 1960/70
die op hun eigen manier wilden leven. Ze droegen kleurrijke, losse kleren die vaak versierd
waren met bloemen. Daarom noemde men de
hippiecultuur ook wel de ‘Flower power’. Dat
betekent letterlijk: ‘bloemenkracht’. Sommige
hippies spraken over zichzelf als de ‘bloemenkinderen’.
Zowel de jongens als de meisjes hadden lang
haar. Die generatie trok eind jaren zestig en
begin jaren zeventig naar India en bracht de
mystiek, de spiritualiteit en de culturele pluriformiteit van India onder de aandacht van
grote groepen thuisblijvers, met als gevolg dat
de belangstelling voor dat land in rap tempo
steeg. Intussen heeft mystiek toerisme zich
verplaatst van India en Nepal naar onder
andere Zuid Amerika waar het Sjamanisme
veel aandacht geniet.
De doelgroep bestaat ook allang niet meer
uit langharige wietrokende backpackers die
in anderen op zoek zijn naar zichzelf, maar
uit mensen die een speciale interesse hebben voor, en heel erg nieuwsgierig zijn naar,
het onverklaarbare. Mystiek toeristen zijn op
zoek naar spirituele krachten in de Andes.
In het boekje ‘Mystiek Toerisme: Parodie of
Betekenis’ zoekt schrijver Rubén Pilares Villa
een verklaring voor de toename van mystiek
toerisme sinds het begin van de jaren zeventig
van de 20ste eeuw. Nadat de hippies eerst het
Oosten met een mystiek aureool hadden omgeven, verplaatste de ‘spirituele supermarkt’
zich langzaam naar de Andes toen steeds
meer boeken daar naar verwezen.
Mystiek is geen theorie, geen doctrine en ook
geen rationele overtuiging maar wel een ervaring van het Transcendente: datgene dat zich
afspeelt buiten de ervaringswereld, het bovenaardse, het bovenzinnelijke, het boven- en het
buitenzintuiglijke.
Als de mysteries die Suriname herbergt goed
in kaart worden gebracht en gevoegd bij de
andere al bekende attracties, dan kunnen wij
een toeristisch product aanbieden waar maar
weinig landen in onze regio aan kunnen tippen.
Daar wordt nu hard aan gewerkt.
Kunst
leeft in
Suriname
Kunst is een breed begrip en kan
op velen manieren gecreëerd,
geuit en bewonderd worden.
Het draagt bij tot de ontwikkeling
van gemeenschappen en brengt
vrolijkheid, plezier, discussies,
nieuwe ervaringen en zienswijzen
met zich mee. Er wordt wel eens
gezegd dat kunst een luxe product
is en meer leeft in de Westerse
wereld. Niets is echter minder
waar. Kunst in Suriname is al jaren
in ontwikkeling en overal terug te
vinden; in galeries, op straat, op
de Nationale Kunstbeurs en op
goed georganiseerde exposities.
Jong en oud brengen kunst in ons
land tot uitdrukking en bereiken
daarmee eveneens internationale
hoogten.

ij de opening van de Nationale Kunstbeurs, in oktober 2012 al weer voor de
47ste keer gehouden, werd in een samenwerking van George Struikelblok
met de Sana Budaya Dance Company een schilderij tot leven gebracht. De
dansers geheel in kleurige pakken gestoken, gezichten beschilderd, lijkend op bodypainting, gleden voor het doek over en om elkaar heen in sierlijke, trage bewegingen.
Na de toespraken komt een stroom mensen langzaam op gang door het gebouw
van Ons Erf in de Prins Hendrikstraat. De toeschouwers bekijken de diverse werken
in hun afzonderlijke kabinetten. Zo af en toe wordt een praatje gemaakt met de
kunstenaar zelf, wat het geheel een extra dimensie geeft. De beurs is een jaarlijks
terugkerende expositie die heel wat bezoekers trekt en niet meer is weg te denken
uit onze samenleving.
Artiesten uit de Surinaamse kunstwereld tonen hun werken; hetzij schilderijen, hetzij
keramiek, beeldhouwwerken of andere vormen van kunst. Het aanbod aan schone
kunsten,is groot. Gevestigde namen en opkomende kunstenaars wisselen elkaar af.
Kunstenaar Amat Mohamadissa koos voor zijn kleurrijke schilderijen als thema de
Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij. “Ik heb de SLM vanwege haar 50 jarig bestaan deze schilderijen geschonken,” verklapte hij.
Het zijn meerderen modellen vliegtuigen van de maatschappij in volle vlucht. Bij het
onderdeel Art in process konden de bezoekers tijdens de avonduren kunstenaars
bewonderen, die ‘live’ werkten aan hun kunstwerken in wording. “Een prima manier
om mijn favoriet aan het werk te zien,” vertelt één van de bezoekers.

Art is alive and well in Suriname
A
t the opening of the National Art Fair, in October 2012 and already
for the 47th time, a collaboration between George Struikelblok
and the Sana Budaya Dance Company, brought a painting to life.
The dancers, completely dressed in colorful suits, painted faces, resembling body painting, slid across the canvas, over and around each other
in graceful, slow movements.
Street Art is primarily an art movement whereby the artists use the
street as an exhibition space. The immediate result is a more beautiful cityscape. With Legal Street Art (for which official permission is
granted) bare and drab walls in the beginning of Jessurun Street were
painted by the young artists: Ramon Kuster, Tiara Spalburg, Priya Jewan
and Ernesto Saldi.
After the speeches, a stream of people started coming slowly through
the building of Ons Erf in the Prins Hendrikstraat. The spectators were
examining the various works in their
separate cabinets. Occasionally, a
chat with the artist himself, giving
it an extra dimension. The fair is
an annual exhibition that attracts
many visitors and it is impossible to
imagine life without it.
Headly: “This way the public gets the chance to know the artists. The
painting develops before the eyes of passersby, something rarely seen
in public”. The works of art these artists have produced are a high class
act. The entire painting process was
captured on film. These movies are
broadcast on local television and released on the Internet. So persons
outside Suriname can enjoy its art as
well.
Besides the project in Jessurun Street,
Sweet Raw has also delivered true works of art at the Neumanpad and
Lobi Foundation. Each time general themes that spotlight the positivity
of art, are used. Positive emotions make people healthier, happier, more
creative and productive. Positivity broadens awareness and our action
potential.

Artists from the Surinamese world
of art display their work, either paintings or ceramics, sculptures and
other art forms. The supply of fine arts is large. Established names and
emerging artists alternate.
Artist Amat Mohamadissa chose for his colorful paintings the Surinam
Airways theme. “I have donated these paintings to the SLM because of
its 50th anniversary”, he tells us. They are several aircraft models of the
company in full flight. In the section Art in process, visitors could admire
in the evening artists who worked live on their art in the making. “A great
way for me to see my favorite artist at work”, says one of the visitors.
Sweet raw Street Art
Another way to lower the threshold and make art accessible to a wider
and foreign public, is the art initiative Sweet Raw developed by Kevin

Laughter is the best medicine
Another rewarding project was decorating the children’s ward of
‘s Lands Hospital. The theme that was used there was love and the idea
of “Laughter is the best medicine”. Love for the sick children in the ward.
For the parents and the children it became a much more pleasant environment become to be in. Even though this was not a real street art project, the artists wanted to respond to the proposal of Marcel Pinas, who
wanted to accomplish this goal with his volunteer organization Global
Shapers. As a team they worked with volunteers from Sweet Raw and
the Nola Hatterman Institute.

Street Art Switi Rauw
Een andere manier om de drempel te verlagen en kunst voor een
breder èn buitenlands publiek toegankelijk te maken, is het door
Kevin Headley en Hedy Tjin ontwikkelde kunstinitiatief Switi Rauw.
Een prachtig Street Art project: “Rauwe” muren in onze binnenstad
worden tot ware kunstwerken omgetoverd. Switi dus! Street Art is
vooral een kunststroming waarbij de makers de straat als expositieruimte gebruiken. Het gevolg is ook meteen een fraaier stadsgezicht.
Met Legal Street Art (waarvoor dus officiële toestemming is verleend)
werden kale en vervallen muren in het begin van de Jessurunstraat beschilderd door de jonge kunstenaars: Ramon Kuster, Tiara Spalburg,
Priya Jewan en Ernesto Saldi.
Headly: “Op deze manier krijgt het publiek ook de kans om de
artiesten beter te leren kennen. Het schilderij ontwikkelt zich namelijk
voor de ogen van voorbijgangers, iets wat zelden zichtbaar is in het
openbaar.”
De kunstwerken die deze kunstenaars hebben neergezet, zijn één
voor één van grote klasse. Het proces van de totstandkoming hiervan is vastgelegd op film. Deze filmpjes worden op de lokale televisie
uitgezonden en via het internet verspreid. Zo kunnen ook personen
buiten Suriname genieten van kunstwerken in Suriname.
Naast het project in de Jessurunstraat, heeft Switi Rauw ook ware
kunstwerken opgeleverd aan het Neumanpad en bij Stichting Lobi.
Telkens worden algemene thema’s gebruikt, die de positiviteit van
kunst naar buiten brengen. Positieve emoties maken mensen gezonder, gelukkiger, creatiever en productiever. Positiviteit verbreedt het
bewustzijn en verruimt ons handelingspotentieel.

Lachen is de beste medicijn
Een ander dankbaar project was het verfraaien van de kinderafdeling
van het ’s Lands Hospitaal. Het thema dat daar gebruikt werd, was
liefde en het idee “Laughter is the best medicine”. Liefde voor de zieke
kinderen op de afdeling. Het is voor de ouders en de kinderen op deze
manier een veel prettigere omgeving geworden om in te zijn. Ook al was
dit geen echt Street Art project, de kunstenaars wilden graag inspelen
op het voorstel van Marcel Pinas, die dit doel wilde uitvoeren met zijn
vrijwilligersorganisatie Global Shapers. Als team werd gewerkt met
vrijwilligers van Switi Rauw, het Nola Hatterman Instituut en Global
Shapers.
“Uiteindelijk is het een wens van ons om naast werken met lokale kunstenaars in de loop van de tijd ook met kunstenaars uit andere landen
samen te werken. Met Carifesta in 2013 werken we daar naar toe. Dit is
een nieuwe fase van kunst in Suriname. Het zou mooi zijn als we een eigen Street Art style voor Suriname kunnen creëren,” zegt Kevin Headly.
georganiseerd, bij welke activiteit een aantal Surinaamse kunstenaars
in de grote vakantie van 2012 met kinderen nieuwe kunstwerken hebben gemaakt. In de toekomst zal het art camp herhaald worden in de
vakanties. In speciale workshops nam telkens een andere kunstenaar
of kunstenaarsduo een groep van twintig kinderen onder zijn of haar
hoede. Het waren weliswaar geen echte lessen, maar de basis van
kunsttechnieken werd de kinderen wel bijgebracht. De op zinkplaten
vastgelegde kunstwerken kregen een plaats bij het door brand verwoeste deel van de Jodenbreestraat.
In december 2012 werd ook een mooie expositie gehouden onder de
titel 18 Talented Young Artists. Achttien kinderen tussen 7 en 10 jaar
kregen de gelegenheid creaties uit hun eigen gevoels- en belevingswereld tentoon te stellen in de expositieruimte de Hal aan de Grote
Combéweg. Ze mochten ieder 3 werken uit hun repertoire presenteren
en maakten op die manier hun debuut in de kunstwereld.
Internationale grootheden
Jong geleerd
Dat kunst al van jongs af ontwikkeld kan worden, blijkt uit de diverse
projecten waar Surinaamse kinderen bij betrokken werden. Samen met
het Kindermuseum Villa Zapakara werd een ‘SWITI RAUW Art Camp’
Suriname kent ook kunstenaars die grote hoogten hebben gehaald
en internationale faam hebben verworven. Erwin de Vries, Rinaldo
Klas, George Struikelblok, Marcel Pinas, Soeki Irodikromo en George
Ramdjiawansingh, om maar een aantal te noemen, zijn kunstenaars
met een gevestigde reputatie. Marcel Pinas is bezig zijn prestigieuze project het internationale Art Park te Moengo in het oosten van
Suriname, verder te ontwikkelen. ‘Zijn’ Moengo wilde hij nieuw leven in
blazen door middel van kunst voor zowel de lokale bevolking als voor
buitenlandse bezoekers.
Het Artist in Residence project, trekt telkens een beroemde buitenlandse kunstenaar aan, die als gast verblijft in de ‘residence’ van
Marcel te Moengo. Zo wordt gestaag toegewerkt naar de eerste art
biënnale in Suriname. Er worden tevens tours georganiseerd naar het
Contemporary Art Museum Moengo in het oude EBS gebouw en de
Tembe Art Studio, die onderdeel zijn van het plan van Pinas om Moengo
het echte art centrum van Suriname te maken.
Kunstboeken van Suriname
Op gebied van kunst in Suriname gebeurt nog veel meer. Voor wie graag
op de hoogte wil zijn van de Surinaamse Kunstwereld, met de jaren is
een aantal mooie concepten ontwikkeld. De kunstwereld is namelijk digitaal te volgen via het Sranan Art Xposed magazine, waar men zich via
het internet voor kan aanmelden. Dit digitale tijdschrift verschijnt drie
keer per jaar in het Nederlands en Engels. Daarnaast is ook het ‘Young
Art Magazine’ nieuw op de markt verschenen, dat verkrijgbaar is in alle
boekhandels en kunst op een frisse manier belicht.

Art is alive and well in Suriname
Ultimately it is a wish of us not only to work alongside local artists but
in the course of time with artists from other countries as well. With
Carifesta in 2013 we are working towards this. This is a new phase of art
in Suriname. It would be nice if we could create our own Street Art style
for Suriname”, says Kevin Headly.
Taught young
That art can be developed from childhood on is apparent from the
various projects where Surinamese children were involved. Together
with the Children’s Museum Villa Zapakara a SWEET RAW Art Camp
was organized where during the 2012 summer holydays a number of
Surinamese artists made together with children new artworks. In the
future, the art camp will be repeated during the holidays. In special
workshops each time a different artist or group of artists took charge of
twenty children. They were indeed not real lessons, but the basic techniques of art are taught to the children.
The works of art captured on corrugated sheets were given a place at
the fire-ravaged part of the Jodenbreestraat. In December 2012 a nice
exhibition with the title 18 Talented Young Artists was also held.
Eighteen children between the ages of 7 and 10 were given the opportunity to exhibit creations out of their own experiences and emotions in
the exhibition space the Hall at the Grote Combéweg. They were each
allowed three works from their repertoire and made their debut in the
art world that way.
International celebrities
Suriname has also artists who have achieved great heights and international fame. Erwin de Vries, Rinaldo Klas, George Struikelblok, Marcel
Pinas, Soeki Irodikromo and George Ramdjiawansingh, to name but a
few, are artists with an established reputation.
Marcel Pinas is engaged in further developing his prestigious international project Art Park Moengo in eastern Suriname. He wanted to revive
‘his’ Moengo through art for both local and foreign visitors.
The Artist in Residence project consistently attracts a famous foreign
artist, who stays as a guest in the ‘residence’ of Marcel in Moengo.
Thus steadily working towards the first art biennale in Suriname.
There are also organized tours to the Contemporary Art Museum
Moengo in the old EBS building and the Tembe Art Studio, which are
part of Pinas’ plan to make Moengo the real art center of Suriname.
Art books of Suriname
In the field of art much more happens in Suriname. For those who wish
to be informed about the Surinamese art world, a number of nice concepts have been developed over the years. The world of art can in fact
be digitally followed with Sranan Art Xposed magazine, where people
can log in via the Internet. This digital magazine is published three times
a year in English and Dutch. In addition, the “Young Art Magazine is ‘new
on the market, available in all bookshops and exposes art in a novel way.
The blog Sranan Art from Marieke Visser, keeps up with the latest developments in Surinamese art (srananart.wordpress.com). And for the
reading enthusiasts a number of interesting books on Surinamese art
and artists has been published over the years. In 2005, the Surinaamsche Bank’s published the book ‘Visible’, written by Chandra Binnendijk.
In 2007 the book, “Talent”, written by Marieke Visser was published, as
a result of an exhibition with the same name held by the Central Bank
of Suriname.
In 2009 followed - Hobo Drawing lines, connecting dots. Contemporary

ontwikkelingen bij op kunstgebied van Suriname (srananart.wordpress.com). En voor de leesliefhebbers is in
de loop der jaren een aantal interessante boeken over
Surinaamse kunst en kunstenaars gepubliceerd. In 2005
werd door de Surinaamsche Bank het boek ‘Zichtbaar’
uitgegeven, geschreven door Chandra van Binnendijk. In
2007 werd het boek; ‘Talent’ van Marieke Visser gepubliceerd, naar aanleiding van de door de Centrale Bank van

edurende vijf dagen in de maand
oktober van 2012 kon het publiek
genieten van jazz op hoog niveau. De
jazzgroepen stelden niet teleur en dat resulteerde in avonden die het publiek nog lang na
de laatste tonen zullen bijblijven. Het tiende
jaar werd in stijl gevierd, want maar liefst vier
buitenlandse groepen reisden naar Suriname
om het festijn luister bij te zetten.
Dè publiekstrekkers waren ongetwijfeld
de Braziliaanse groep Choro Livre en
Metta Quintet uit New York. De heren uit
The Big Apple openden het festival in het
Uitgangscentrum van Paramaribo, in een gemoedelijke sfeer. De vele jazzliefhebbers die
erop afgekomen waren genoten met volle
teugen. Toen rond elf uur de laatste tonen
verstierven, smeekte het publiek om meer.
Maar ze zouden toch nog een paar dagen
moeten wachten om weer op goede jazz
te worden getrakteerd. Aan dat verlangen
werd ruimschoots tegemoetgekomen op de
hoofdavond van het festival.
Met Choro Livre liep het jammer genoeg niet
geheel naar verwachting. Door een stroomstoring, die niet ter plekke kon worden verholpen

– en naar later bleek het enige minpunt van
het festival te zijn geweest– kon het goed
opgekomen publiek in de perfect aangeklede
ambiance, niet genieten van de muzikaliteit
van onze zuiderburen.
De teleurstelling was merkbaar, maar dit
werd later goed gemaakt op de laatste avond
van het festival.
Ook daar kwam het publiek goed op om te
genieten van oorstrelende jazzklanken.
Andere groepen die te gast waren op het
festival waren Down Town Dixie Society uit
Nederland, met hun vrolijke dixieland muziek.
Dixieland is een typisch Amerikaanse muzieksoort, ontstaan uit een samensmelting van
Creoolse muziek met ragtime, blues, “negrospirituals”, marsmuziek en de zogenaamde
Tin Pan Alley-muziek.
De laatste groep was een muziekensemble
samengesteld uit muzikanten uit Suriname,
St. Maarten, Duitsland en Venezuela.
Asgar Koster, een lokale gospelartiest, en
zijn vrienden die jazz rap brachten, waren de
uitsmijter en daarmee was het programma
compleet.
Jamming
Met de term jamming wordt vaak muzikaal
samenspel aangeduid. Tijdens het ‘jammen’,
de jamsession, ontstaan vaak creatieve invallen en niet minder vaak nieuw muzikaal
materiaal. Bij jamsessions worden vaak jazz
standards ten gehore gebracht, daar deze tot
het algemeen gangbare repertoire van jazzmuzikanten behoren.
Op de officiële openingsavond van het festival werd het behoorlijk druk bij de jamsession
in hartje Paramaribo. Zowel muzikanten als
liefhebbers van muziek stroomden naar de
jamavond waar er rond negen uur ’s avonds
bijna geen doorkomen meer aan was. De heren van Down Town Dixie Society waren er al
vroeg bij en zetten de toon, die de rest van de
avond zou blijven hangen.
Een mooi moment was zeker toen de MC
de toegestroomde muzikanten onder het
publiek uitnodigde te jammen met de heren
van Metta Quintet die intussen waren aangeschoven. En wat er toen gebeurde, is moeilijk
met woorden te beschrijven.

public could enjoy jazz on a high level.
The jazz groups did not disappoint
and that resulted in nights the audience will
long remember after the last notes have died
down. The tenth year was celebrated in style,
because no fewer than four foreign groups
traveled to Suriname to give added luster to
the event.
The box office draws were undoubtedly the
Brazilian Choro Livre group and Metta Quintet from New York. The guys from The Big Apple opened the festival in the Entertainment
Center of Paramaribo, in a friendly atmosphere. The many jazz fans that had come out
enjoyed to the fullest. When around eleven
o’clock the last notes died away, the audience
begged for more. But they would still have to
wait a few more days to get treated again to
good jazz. That wish was more than fulfilled
during the main night of the festival.
For Choro Livre not everything went entirely
as expected, unfortunately. Due to a power
failure, which could not be solved on the spot
- and turned out to be the only downside of
the festival – the nice attendance was unable
to enjoy the musicality of our southern neighbors in the otherwise nice atmosphere.
The disappointment was noticeable, but this
was later made good on the last night of the
festival. Here, a good turnout as well was able
to enjoy the mellifluous jazz sounds.
Other groups that were guests at the festival were Dixie Down Town Society from the
Netherlands, with their cheerful Dixieland
music. Dixieland is a typical American musical genre, created from a fusion of Creole
music with ragtime, blues, “Negro spirituals”,
marching music and the so-called called Tin
Pan Alley music.
The last group was a music ensemble
composed of musicians from Suriname,
St. Maarten, Germany and Venezuela. Asgar
Koster, a local gospel artist, and his friends
who brought jazz rap, were the final number
of the show and completed the program.

At the official opening night of the festival it was pretty busy at the jam session in
the center of Paramaribo. Both musicians
and music lovers flocked to the jam evening where around nine o’clock in the evening
it was almost impossible to pass through.
The guys from Down Town Dixie Society had
arrived early to set the trend that would linger
for the rest of the evening.
A beautiful moment was certainly when the
MC invited the musicians in the audience
to come and jam with the guys from Metta
Quintet who had made their entrance in the
meantime.
And what happened next is hard to describe
in words.

van hun durf om met gevestigde artiesten te musiceren. Hen werd
dan ook vaker gevraagd om mee te spelen. Al met al een geslaagde
avond, aan het eind waarvan, om één uur in de ochtend, het publiek
voldaan huiswaarts keerde.

with their audacity to make music with established artists. As a result they were asked time and again to join in. All in all a successful
evening, at the end of which, at one o’clock in the morning, the audience went home satisfied.

Een van de hoogtepunten van het festival was dat voor het eerst in
de geschiedenis van dit muziekfeest, twee docenten erbij werden
gehaald voor het verzorgen van workshops. Jazzzangeres Marjorie
Barnes verzorgde vocale lessen voor ruim 25 geïnteresseerden,
terwijl bassiste Adinda Meertins met jongeren ensembles vormde
waarmee verschillende nummers werden ingestudeerd.
One of the highlights of the festival was that for the first time in the
history of this music festival, two teachers were invited to give workshops. Jazz Singer Marjorie Barnes provided vocal lessons for over
25 interested parties, while bass player Adinda Meertins formed ensembles with youngsters and practiced several songs.
Op de laatste avond van het festival waren het de jazzvocalgroepen
die jazz standards als Fly me to the moon en In a Mellotone ten gehore brachten. De sfeer werd verder verhoogd door de ensembles,
die oude Surinaamse kasekonummers als Mi seni a boi en Kaaiman
brachten, gestopt in een latin-jazzjasje. Het publiek genoot zichtbaar, waardoor het een waardige afsluiting werd van de twee weken
durende workshops.
Het was echter Choro Livre uit Brazilië, waar grote delen van het
publiek op stonden te wachten die laatste avond, die de show stal.
Slechts op gitaar en percussie speelden ze jazz zoals dat maar zelden te horen is in Suriname. Uitroepen als “die mannen zijn echt
goed” en “wat een mooie muziek maken ze”, werden dan ook vaak
gehoord. Daarmee gaven ze blijk dat Suriname er kennelijk niet genoeg van kan krijgen.
De toon is gezet
Met een kleine jam van vijftien minuten door lokaal talent, werd de
tiende editie van het SJF 2012 officieel afgesloten. De organisatie
kijkt tevreden terug op een geslaagd festival. Het waren vijf hectische, maar voldoening gevende dagen.
De voorbereidingen voor het festival in 2013 zijn nu al in volle gang.
Het is dan ook een absolute aanrader om in oktober, in elk geval in
het laatste weekend, in Suriname te zijn. Want dan zult u een bijzondere editie van het Suriname Jazz Festival met weer aardig wat
verrassingen live kunnen meemaken. De toon is gezet.

On the last night of the festival it was the vocal jazz groups that
brought jazz standards like Fly me to the moon and In a MelloTone.
The atmosphere was further increased by the ensembles, which
brought old Surinamese kaseko numbers as Mi seni a boi(I sent the
boy) and Kaaiman(Cayman), put in a Latin-jazz jacket.
The audience visibly enjoyed the show, making it a worthy conclusion of the two-week workshops.
But it was Choro Livre from Brazil, awaited by large sections of the public that last night, who stole the show. Only on guitar and percussion,
they played jazz as it is seldom heard in Suriname. Exclamations
such as “these guys are really good” and “what a beautiful music
they make” were often heard, showing that apparently Suriname
cannot get enough of it.
The trend has been set
With a little fifteen minutes jam by local talent, the tenth edition of
the SJF 2012 was officially closed. The organization looks back on a
successful festival. There were five hectic, but satisfying days.
The preparations for the festival in 2013 are already in full swing.
So it is an absolute must to be in Suriname in October, at least
during the last weekend. For then you will experience live a special
edition of the Suriname Jazz Festival with again some nice surprises.
The trend has been set.

diepgang en kwaliteit. Niet alleen in ons land maar
ook buiten onze grenzen bewijzen onze landgenoten
dat ze capabele musici zijn en de muziek op professionele wijze kunnen beoefenen. Een leegte die door
onze muzikanten altijd sterk werd gevoeld, was de
in eigen land zeer beperkte mogelijkheid om kapotte
muziekinstrumenten te repareren.

The practice of music in Suriname is acquiring more

beyond our borders our countrymen prove that they

Zes nieuwe gitaarbouwers en reparateurs opgeleid

espelers van snaarinstrumenten zoals gitaren, violen, mandolines, quatros, harpen bijvoorbeeld, zaten met de handen in het
haar wanneer hun instrument kapot raakte. Het aantal reparateurs kon je op de vingers van één hand tellen. Het bouwen van een
eigen gitaar was slechts aan enkele ambachtelijke vaklieden voorbehouden. Maar sinds kort heeft Suriname er zes gitaarbouwers bij. Ze
leerden gedurende een jaar alle kneepjes van het vak bij meestergitaarbouwer Ronald George Brunings, een vitale 76-jarige gepensioneerde
leraar Spaans en gepassioneerd musicus.
Een kamer in zijn woning aan de Anamoestraaat 37 in ParamariboNoord boordevol snaarinstrumenten die gerepareerd moeten worden,
is het sprekend bewijs dat er grote behoefte in Suriname bestaat aan
reparateurs.
Passie voor muziek
Brunings heeft een passie voor muziek. Geduld, creativiteit en behulpzaamheid zijn de ingrediënten van zijn succes concept. “Hoe druk ik het
ook heb, hoe beschadigd het instrument ook is, ik stuur nooit iemand
die mijn hulp inroept weg”, zegt hij. Terwijl wij dit interview maken komt
een dame een gitaar brengen; total loss en niet meer te bespelen. “Ik
maak het wel in orde”, stelt hij haar gerust. Zijn telefoon staat iedere
dag roodgloeiend van mensen die bellen om een snaarinstrument te
laten repareren.
Brunings zelf bespeelt bijna alle snaarinstrumenten en beoefent verschillende muziekstijlen, van klassieke muziek, tot country and western,
kaseko, spiriuals, soul en Zuid-Amerikaanse muziek en alles wat daar
tussen ligt. Hij heeft in talrijke muziekformaties gespeeld.
Theoretische kennis deed hij op tijdens zijn opleiding tot onderwijzer en de praktijk leerde hij door zelfstudie. In zijn jonge jaren heeft hij
onder andere gespeeld in muziekformaties met de gebroeders Barendz
(Country and Western), George Gomperts, een muziekgroep van de
Troepenmacht in Suriname(TRIS) het Leger van vóór de onafhankelijkheid in 1975. In deze band bespeelde hij de Hawaï gitaar. Aan zijn
muzikale vorming hebben mensen als René ‘Lodi’ Rodrigues en Richenel
Jongbaw, veel bijgedragen. Hij heeft een veelbelovende carrière als
musicus laten schieten. “Af en toe speel ik nog op feestjes”, zegt hij.
Tijdens een studie in Venezuela mocht hij eens meespelen in de
band van de wereldbekende Zuid-Amerikaanse harpist Hugo Blanco.
“Ik bespeelde de quatro (een kleinere uitvoering van de gitaar met vier
snaren…Red).
Het optreden had plaats in een grote muziekhal met een duizendkoppig
publiek. Hugo Blanco kondigde me persoonlijk aan als ‘een begenadigd
musicus uit Suriname’. Het was een grote eer om in de band van zo’n
beroemdheid te mogen meespelen”.
Door zich de laatste jaren intensief toe te leggen op het repareren van
kapot geraakte snaarinstrumenten en zijn kennis over te dragen aan
jongeren, wil Ronald Brunings iets betekenen voor de duurzame muziekbeoefening in Suriname.
”Vroegen stuurden de mensen hun instrument voor reparatie naar het
buitenland of hielden op met muziek maken omdat ze zich geen ander
instrument konden veroorloven. Als ze bij mij komen worden ze geholpen en kunnen daarna muziek blijven beoefenen”.
Gitaarbouwer
Toen hij als onderwijzer in 1980 in Wageningen, Nickerie was gedetacheerd, bouwde hij zijn eerste gitaar. “Van Anthony Walker, die in het
Estherhof te Zorg en Hoop opereert, leerde ik de technische kneepjes
en de gereedschappen had ik van mijn vader die meubelmaker was te
Charlesburg. Sindsdien heb ik 109 gitaren gebouwd en ongeveer 100
quatros. De houtsoort die je gebruikt is heel belangrijk voor de klank
van de gitaar. Ik gebruik alleen Surinaamse houtsoorten zoals ceder,
sumaruba (Simarouba Glauca), purperhout (handelsnaam Amarante,
botanische naam Peltogyne spec.) en watrakanu (Cordia alliodora).
Voor de klankkast wordt hardhout gebruikt, enerzijds voor de stevigheid
en anderzijds om een diepe klank te creëren. Het klankblad wordt van
een zachter soort hout gemaakt. Voor de zijkant en het achterblad werk
ik met hardhoutsoorten. Voor de snaren worden zowel nylon als metaalsnaren gebruikt. Om de gitaar een mooie glans te geven gebruik ik
meestal vernis op oliebasis. De zes cursisten, die ik de kneepjes van het
gitaar bouwen heb bijgebracht, hebben allen een gitaar gebouwd. Een
reparateur en bouwer van snaarinstrumenten kan vanwege de grote
publieke behoefte, goed geld verdienen en daar heel prettig van leven,”
zegt hij tot besluit.

Six new guitar builders and repairmen trained
In his young years he has played among others in musical groups with
the brothers Barendz (country and western), George Gomperts, a music group of the Dutch troops stationed in Suriname (TRIS) before the
independence in 1975. In this band he played the ukulele or Hawaiian
guitar.
People like Rene ‘Lodi’ Rodrigues and Richenel Jongbaw, contributed
much to his musical education. He passed up a promising career as a
musician. “Occasionally, I still play at parties,” he says. During a study
in Venezuela, he was allowed once to play in the band of the world
famous South American harpist Hugo Blanco. “I played the cuatro (a
smaller version of the guitar with four strings ... Ed).
“The performance took place in a large music hall with an audience of
thousands. Hugo Blanco introduced me as ‘a gifted musician from Suriname’. It was a great honor to be playing in the band of such a celebrity”.
By buckling down the last years to repairing broken stringed instruments and transfer his knowledge to youngsters, Ronald Brunings
wants to matter to enduring music making in Suriname.
“In the past people sent their instrument for repair abroad or stopped
making music because they could not afford to buy another instrument.
When they come to me, they are helped and can then continue practicing music “.
Guitar Builder
When as a teacher he was posted to Wageningen, Nickerie in 1980, he
built his first guitar. “From Anthony Walker, who operates in the Estherhof at Zorg en Hoop, I learned the technical tricks and I had the tools
from my father who was a cabinetmaker at Charlesburg. Since then I
have built 109 guitars and about 100 Cuatros. The type of wood you
use is very important for the sound of the guitar. I only use Surinamese
woods such as Cedar, Paradise Tree (Simarouba Glauca), Purpleheart
(Peltogyne) and Spanish Elm (Cordia Alliodora).

layers of stringed instruments such as guitars, violins, mandolins, Cuatros, harps for example, were at a dead loss what to do
when their instrument became broken. The number of repairers
could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Building your own guitar
was reserved only to artisan craftsmen. But since recently, Suriname
has six guitar builders. During one year they learned all the tricks of
the trade from master luthier George Ronald Brunings, a vital 76-yearold retired teacher of Spanish and passionate musician. A room in his
house in Anamoestraaat 37 in Paramaribo North is packed with string
instruments to be repaired; it is clear proof that there is a great need in
Suriname for repairers.
Passion for music
Brunings has a passion for music. Patience, creativity and helpfulness
are the ingredients of his success concept. “It does not matter how busy
I am, how damaged the instrument is, I never send anyone away who
called upon me for assistance,” he says. While we make this interview a
lady brings a guitar, total loss and not playable anymore. “I’ll be fine,” he
assures her. His phone is ringing every day from people calling to have a
stringed instrument repaired.
Brunings himself plays almost all string instruments and practices
different musical styles, from classical music to country and western,
kaseko, spirituals, soul and South American music and everything in between. He has played in numerous musical groups. He acquired theoretical knowledge during his training as a teacher and the practice he
learned through self study.
The sound box is made of hardwoods, for strength on one hand and to
create a deep sound on the other hand. The soundboard is made of a
softer type of wood. For the side and the back cover, I work with hardwoods. The strings are both nylon and metal. To give the guitar a nice
sheen I usually use oil-based varnish. The six students I have taught the
tricks of guitar building have all built a guitar. A builder and repairer of
stringed instruments, due to high public demand, can earn good money
and lead a very pleasant life “, he concludes.

Pluraal toerisme
Het toerisme is bezig zich te ontwikkelen tot een van de
levensaders van de Surinaamse economie en meer in het
bijzonder de economie van het achterland. Dat is ongetwijfeld
toe te schrijven aan de diversiteit van ons toeristisch product.
Men houdt ervan om op alles een etiket te plakken, zodat we
de dingen op een bepaalde manier zien en tot een bepaalde
categorie rekenen. Dat geldt niet alleen voor allerlei producten,
maar ook voor mensen. Want onderscheid moet er zijn, niet
waar? Neem nou toerisme. Is dat iets nieuws? Het antwoord
is…nee. Het is gewoon een oud product van een nieuw label
voorzien. De wereld lijkt wel een toeristische supermarkt. Je
ziet door de labels het product niet meer.
Eerst was er de reiziger: iemand die zich verplaatst van een
herkomst naar een bestemming. Gewoon recht toe, recht aan.
Dat kon een ontdekkingsreiziger, een handelsreiziger of een
wereldreiziger zijn.
Later kwam de vakantieganger: iemand met vakantie die
erop uittrekt. Veelal was dat of gewoon thuis blijven en lekker
luieren, of op zijn best naar een andere stad of ander dorp
trekken…in eigen land. Toen deed de toerist zijn intrede. Toerist
is iedereen die een andere dan zijn eigen woonomgeving
bezoekt en zich daar recreatief bezig houdt.
wat hij daar allemaal heeft meegemaakt. Hoe verder weg, hoe
beter en het ene verhaal is nog sterker dan het andere.
En nu de toerist. Die is altijd op zoek naar de overtreffende
trap. Want anders dan de gewone vakantieganger die veelal
niet eens weet waarom hij op vakantie gaat, gaat de toerist
op zoektocht. Goed beschouwd is hij een ontdekkingsreiziger.
En het wordt hem makkelijk gemaakt door alle toeristische
producten van een etiket, van een label te voorzien.
Een greep uit het uitgebreide scala: Avontuurtoerisme,
Cultuurtoerisme, Stedelijk toerisme, Duurzaam toerisme,
Ecotoerisme, Extreem toerisme (dat aan hoge risico’s verbonden is), Genealogietoerisme (reis met het doel om zijn voorgeslacht te vinden, de geboorteplaatsen van deze voorvaderen
te bezoeken en soms verre familie trachten te ontmoeten),
Gezondheidstoerisme en…Mystiek toerisme. De mystieke ervaring kan vaak niet helemaal in woorden uitgedrukt worden.
Net zoals met alle ervaring moet je dat zelf hebben meegemaakt om te weten hoe het is.
Reizigers die op pad gaan terwijl de rest thuis blijft bestaan
niet meer. Tegenwoordig blijft vrijwel niemand meer thuis.
Sterker nog, je màg niet eens meer thuis blijven!
Nu doet zich het wonderlijke verschijnsel voor dat het
merendeel van de mensen weliswaar op vakantie gaat maar
slechts een klein deel zichzelf als toerist beschouwd. Ze
voelen zich eerder reiziger. Mijn verwarring is nu compleet,
want het woordenboek geeft voor vakantieganger de volgende begripsomschrijvingen 1) Iemand die op vakantie is 2)
Persoonsbenaming 3) Reiziger 4) Recreant 5) Toerist.
Vakantie houden is uitgegroeid tot een nieuw soort statussymbool; iedere vakantieganger probeert de andere de loef af
te steken met verhalen over plaatsen die hij heeft bezocht en
En het Surinaams toeristisch product? Divers als onze bevolking. Ik breng het daarom allemaal onder één label: Pluraal
toerisme. Voor het gemak van de toerist.

Tourism is rapidly developing into one of the arteries of the
Surinamese economy and more particularly the economy of
the hinterland. This is undoubtedly due to the diversity of our
tourism product.
One likes to stick a label to everything, so we see things in a
certain way and count it to a certain category. This applies not
only to all kinds of products, but also to people. For distinction there must be, is it not? Take tourism for example. Is that
something new? The answer is ... no. It’s just an old product
with a new label. The world looks like a tourist supermarket.
You cannot see the products from the labels anymore.
First there was the traveler: a person who moves from an
origin to a destination. Just head straight on. That could have
been an explorer, a salesman or a world traveler. Later came
the holidaymaker: someone who sets off on a holiday. Often
this was just staying home and laze away, or at best travel
to another city or another village ... at home. Then the tourist
arrives. Tourist is anyone visiting a place other than his own
environment and engages in recreational activities.
Travelers who set off while the rest remains at home are
extinct. Today practically nobody stays home anymore. In fact,
you can not even stay home anymore!
Going on holidays has become a new kind of status symbol;
every holidaymaker is trying to outdo the other with stories
about places he has visited and what he has been through. The
further away the better, and the tall stories better each other.

And now the tourist. He is always looking for the superlative.
Because unlike the ordinary holidaymaker who often does not
even know why he’s on vacation, the tourist goes on a quest.
All things considered, he is an explorer. And it is made easy for
him applying a label to all tourist products.

The mystical experience can often not be completely
expressed in words. As with all the experience you have to
personally experience it to know how it is. Now arises the
strange phenomenon that the majority of people go indeed
on vacation but only a small proportion considers themselves
tourists. They rather feel like a traveler.
My confusion is now complete, because the dictionary gives
the following definitions for holidaymakers 1) A person who
is on holiday 2) Person Name 3) Traveler 4) vacationer 5)
Tourist.
And the Surinamese tourism product? Diverse as our population. I therefore place it all under one label: plural tourism.

et kleine project belooft echter ook een

Vanaf een houten bruggetje dat zich
tussen de toppen van het hoog opgeschoten
struikgewas heen kronkelt, hebben natuurliefhebbers een vrijwel onbelemmerd uitzicht
rondom.
Binnenkort verrijst er trouwens ook een uitkijktoren uit het bos, zodat de fanatieke birdwatchers, vogelspotters, ook aan hun trekken kunnen komen. Het plattelandsdistrict
Coronie staat vooral bekend om haar honing
en kokospalmen. Het is maar dun bevolkt en
de meeste bedrijvigheid komt van de over de
Oost-Westverbinding voorbijrazende auto’s,
trucks en andere motorrijtuigen. Toerisme is
dus ook niet iets waar het gebied snel mee geassocieerd wordt.
Wie echter open staat voor verrassingen kan in
het district enkele mooie schatten ontdekken.
De oude, houten huisjes, bijvoorbeeld, vormen
idyllische plaatjes langs de weg, evenals de
vele monumentale en goed onderhouden kerken. Wie daar oog voor heeft kan niet anders
dan stil worden van de overweldigende pracht
van het mangrovebos. Dit vloedbos is sinds
kort toegankelijk voor recreanten. De strook
kustbomen is een project van de Anton de
Kom Universiteit van Suriname (Adek) en eigenlijk bedoeld als ‘groene dijk’.

Mangrove Splendor
T
he small project also promises to deliver a beautiful piece of nature. From
a wooden bridge that snakes between
the tops of the overgrown bushes, nature
lovers have a virtually unobstructed view all
around. Soon a watchtower will arise in the
forest, so the avid bird watchers can come into
their own.
The rural district of Coronie is known for its
honey and coconut palms. It is only sparsely
populated and most of the activity is on the
east-west route from speeding cars, trucks and
other motor vehicles. Tourism therefore is not
something the area is quickly associated with.
Those receptive to surprises can discover
some beautiful treasures in the district. The
old wooden houses, for example, are idyllic
pictures along the way, as well as the many
monumental and well maintained churches.
Anyone who has an eye for it can only be silenced by the overwhelming beauty of the
mangrove forest.
This tidal wood has recently become accessible for vacationers. The coastal strip of trees
is a project of the Anton de Kom University
of Suriname (Adek) and actually intended as
“green dam”.
Access to the wooded area is appropriately
situated at the old Bellevue plantation. Slightly inland the Dutch MNO Vervat is building a
kilometers long stone weir. It should protect
the houses and farmlands of Coronie against
the violence of the ocean and later the rising
sea levels caused by climate change. Many
however fear that the special and important
coastal ecosystem will disappear with this artificial dam.
Ally against the ocean
For several years the soft, more ecological approach has found a new ally in the dynamics of
nature itself: the mangrove forest. The coast is
subject to erosion, the coastline is continuously pushed inland by the sea. The main strength
of the sea lies in the displacement of a huge
body of water. That movement is facilitated by
currents, tides and wind.
Hydrologist Prof. Sieuwnath Naipal is coordinator of the study and conservation project.
In July 2010 he planted with his local ‘mangrove man’ Remie Amattarmoedj the first
trees. In just two years they have become
strong mangrove trees.

zich, heel toepasselijk, bij de oude plantage Bellevue. Ietwat landinwaarts werkt het
Nederlandse MNO Vervat aan een kilometerslange, stenen waterkering. Die moet de huizen
en landbouwgronden van Coronie gaan beschermen tegen het geweld van de oceaan en
later ook tegen de stijging van de zeespiegel
als gevolg van de klimaatverandering. Velen
vrezen echter dat het bijzondere en belangrijke
ecosysteem van de kust met die kunstmatige
dam zal verdwijnen.

prof. Sieuwnath Naipal. In juli 2010 plantte
hij met zijn lokale ‘mangroveman’ Remie
Amattarmoedj de eerste boompjes. In nauwelijks twee jaar tijd zijn die kleintjes al uitgegroeid tot sterke mangrovebomen.
Bondgenoot tegen de oceaan
Die ‘canopy walk’ alleen al is een belevenis.
Onder je zie je vooral zompige modder, maar
als je goed kijkt, ontdek je daar ook krabbetjes.
Om je heen alleen maar de indringende, frisgroene kleur van de bladeren. (“Lik eens aan
de achterkant van een blad”, oppert Naipal,
“Die proeft echt lekker zout.”)
Al enkele jaren heeft men bij de zachte, meer
ecologische aanpak een nieuwe bondgenoot
gevonden in de dynamiek van de natuur zelf:
het mangrovebos. De kust is onderhevig aan
erosie, de kustlijn wordt aanhoudend door de
zee landinwaarts teruggedrongen. De voornaamste kracht van de zee schuilt in de verplaatsing van een enorme watermassa. Die
verplaatsing wordt in de hand gewerkt door
stromingen, getijden en wind. Coördinator van

Samen met enkele inwoners van het nabijgelegen dorp Totness bouwden zij ook een
‘canopy walk’. Die houten brug enkele meters
boven grond slingert van de eenvoudige, open
studentenhut dwars door de boomtoppen.
Het bruggetje loopt tot aan de rand van het
parwabos, zoals de mangrove ook wel wordt
genoemd, waar plots een indrukwekkend
panorama opdoemt uit al het groen. Een
bruine modderbank reikt tot in de verste verte.
Daar kun je misschien nog net een eenzame
vissersboot onderscheiden. En welke richting
je ook opkijkt, overal zie je kustvogels. De modder is namelijk een belangrijke voedselplaats
voor veel dieren, waarbij de mangrove een
essentiële rol speelt als broedplaats en bescherming. Watersnips komen er bijvoorbeeld
in grote getale vanuit Canada overwinteren. In
vergelijking met andere landen in de regio strijken bovendien zeer veel rode ibissen neer op
deze voedselrijke modderbank.
Daar tussendoor lopen parmantige blauwe
reigers of sabaku’s en in de bomen achter je
wil er nog wel eens een buizerd of aasgier opduiken.

Vogels van allerlei pluimage
De lijst van vogels die vanaf deze plek te spotten zijn, is lang. Aan de Surinaamse kust leven
er volgens Naipal’s documentatie meer dan
118 soorten watervogels, waarvan een groot
deel de relatief veilige en rustige Coroniekust
opzoekt.
Die diversiteit aan watervogels is veel rijker
dan die van naburige landen. De kust van
Guyana, bijvoorbeeld, wordt beschermd door
kilometerslange zeedijken, die onvoldoende
bescherming, geen broedplaatsen en bovendien geen voedsel voor de vogels bieden.
Ook in Suriname wordt dit rijke ecosysteem
echter bedreigd. De in aanbouw zijnde zeedijk
van MNO Vervat maakt het bos kwetsbaar,
omdat er nu nauwelijks zoetwater vanuit
het achterliggende moeras naar de zee toestroomt.
Hoewel de parwa met zijn voeten in het zoute
zeewater staat, heeft het zo af en toe wel een
goede spoelbeurt met zoetwater nodig om te
overleven. De vraag is dus of alle inspanningen
van Naipal, Amattarmoedj en hun studenten
de mangrove in leven kunnen houden.
In ieder geval kunnen natuurliefhebbers nu
nog genieten van het prachtige uitzicht en alle
bijzondere dieren die de mangrove herbergt.
Gewapend met fototoestel en verrekijker kun
je vanaf de hoge brug, en binnenkort vanaf
de houten uitkijktoren bij het studentenkamp,
alle pracht dichterbij halen.

Het steeds wisselende beeld van dansende
golven, de einde- en einderloze verten van de
watervlakte, het onuitputtelijke natuurschoon
van de zee bekoort niet alleen vogels, maar
ook mensen van diverse pluimage.

village Totness they built a ‘canopy walk’. The
wooden bridge, several meters above ground,
winds from the simple, open student hut
through the treetops.
That ‘canopy walk’ alone is an experience. Below you can see mostly swampy mud, but if
you look closely, you can also discover crabs
there. You are surrounded by the penetrating,
fresh green color of the leaves. (“Lick once the
back of a leaf”, suggests Naipal, “It tastes really salty.”)
The bridge runs to the edge of the parwa wood
as the mangrove is sometimes called, where
suddenly an impressive panorama emerges
from all the green.
A brown mud bank extends to the farthest distance. There you may just discern a lonely fishing boat. And in whichever direction you look,
you see shorebirds. The mud is an important
feeding site for many animals, whereby the
mangrove plays an essential role as a breeding and protection area.
Common snipes migrate in great numbers
from Canada to overwinter. Compared with
other countries in the region many scarlet
ibises alight on this nutrient-rich mud bank.
In between jaunty blue or white herons walk
around and in the trees behind you a buzzard
or vulture might suddenly emerge.
Birds of different feathers
The list of birds that can be spotted here
is long. According to Naipal’s documentation over 118 species of waterfowl live on the
Surinamese coast, many of which look up the
relatively safe and quiet Coronie coast. This diversity of waterfowl is much richer than that
of neighboring countries. The coast of Guyana,
for example, is protected by miles of sea walls,
with inadequate protection, no nesting sites
and no food for the birds.

In Suriname, this rich ecosystem is threatened
as well. The seawall under construction by
MNO Vervat makes the forest vulnerable because there is hardly any fresh water from the
swamp behind that can flow towards the sea.
Although the Parwa stands with his feet in
salty seawater, it needs occasionally a good
rinse with fresh water to survive.
The question is whether all the efforts of
Naipal, Amattarmoedj and his students can
keep the mangrove alive. In any case, nature

De tijd van Saramaccaanse
vrouwen is gekomen
Suriname heeft veel meer te bieden dan
alleen de adembenemende schoonheid
en ongerepte natuur die de meeste toeristen bij een bezoek aan het land zien. Zij
die het binnenland en de dorpjes aan de
Surinamerivier hebben bezocht, hebben
er vaak geen weet van dat sommige van
de vrouwen die ze ontmoet hebben in werkelijkheid slimme ondernemers zijn.
Een groep nijvere vrouwen heeft de koppen bij elkaar gestoken om haar liefde voor
de Surinaamse natuur te combineren met
businessplannen. Deze groep, genaamd de
Saamaka Muje Ting Kisi (staat voor de tijd
van Saramaccaanse vrouwen is gekomen),
heeft een coöperatie opgezet van vrouwen
die natuurlijke producten maken en verkopen bij de toeristenverblijven aan de bovenloop van de rivier.
Het begon in 2010 toen de Stichting Women’s
Business Group (WBG), een Surinaamse ngo
die vrouwen ondersteunt door middel van
trainingen in businessvaardigheden, een programma lanceerde om vrouwen in moeilijk
bereikbare gebieden in Suriname te trainen
in ondernemerschap. Omdat de vrouwen
in deze gebieden alleen met hun kinderen

achterblijven wanneer hun echtgenoten
naar de stad, Paramaribo, gaan op zoek naar
werk, zouden zij zonder de trainingen van
WBG niet in staat zijn hun vaardigheden te
ontwikkelen. Veel van deze vrouwen hebben,
anders dan gelegenheidsarbeid per dag,
geen bron van inkomsten om hun gezin te
verzorgen.
Het geld dat hun echtgenoten sturen is niet
voldoende om in de behoeften van het gezin te voorzien. Daarom hebben de vrouwen
WBG benaderd om ze te helpen bij het vinden van een manier waarop ze het gat in hun
inkomen zouden kunnen dichten en waardoor ze hun gezinnen een beter leven kunnen
geven.

De vrouwen wisten al van de heilzame werking van deze natuurlijke hulpbronnen en
met de training leerden ze er consumptieartikelen van te maken. Ze realiseerden zich
dat ze een inkomen konden genereren waarmee ze niet slechts zichzelf maar ook hun families en gemeenschappen konden helpen.
Met de kennis en vaardigheden die ze hebben opgedaan in de WBG-training hebben
ze de coöperatie Saamaka Muje Ting Kisi opgezet en waren ze in staat hun producten te
vermarkten in de lodges in de omgeving. Dit
heeft erin geresulteerd dat elke vrouw in de
groep haar inkomen met 80 tot 100% heeft
kunnen verhogen.
De in totaal 25 vrouwen hebben een training gekregen in het vervaardigen van geneeskrachtige producten, denk aan zeep,
lichaams- en massageoliën en body scrubs.
Een body scrub is een soort romige zeep
waar kristallen in zitten die dode huidcellen
(kese gibi) verwijderen wanneer je je daarmee afschrobt. Deze producten kunnen met
voortbrengselen van de natuur uit hun eigen
leefomgeving worden gemaakt, zoals kokosnoot, awara- en maripaolie, podosiri (açaibes afkomstig van de palissadepalm) en

Suriname offers so much more than the
breathtaking natural beauty and pristine
environments that most people see when
they visit the country. Those who visit
the interior and the villages that dot the
Suriname River have no idea that some
of the women they may see in the villages
are actually savvy entrepreneurs. In fact,
an industrious group of women who live in
these villages has come together to combine their love of natural Suriname with
their business ideas.
The group, known as the Saamaka Muje Ting
Kisi Women’s Group (in English, “the time for
Saramaccan women has come”), has formed a cooperative of women who make natural products, which are available at tourist
lodges along the upper part of the river.

their families.
The women, 25 in all, received training in how
to produce spa products such as soaps, body
and massage oils, and body scrubs from the
natural products found in their communities

berry and soursop fruit. They already had
knowledge of the benefits of these natural
products, and with the training they received
in making goods from these resources, they
realized they could make an income which
would benefit not just themselves, but also
their families and communities.
With the knowledge and skills obtained
through the WBG training, the women formed their cooperative, Saamaka Muje Ting
Kisi Women’s Group, and were collectively
able to market their products to lodges in
the area, leading to each woman in the group
increasing her income by 80-100%.

sells natural products at tourist lodges all
along the upper Suriname River. If you are

Djanur
Bloemen zijn het slachtoffer van hun eigen succes. Letterlijk zelfs, want steeds als
mensen hun emoties (voor elkaar) willen uiten moeten bloemen het ontgelden,
eraan te pas komen, opgeofferd worden. De mensen hebben er een ontroerende
vergoelijking voor: ‘zeg het met bloemen’. Begrijpelijk, want de betovering waarmee
bloemen spreken in de universele talen van vorm, kleur en geur is niet te evenaren.
Bloemstukken worden ook wel ‘ruikers’ genoemd vanwege hun vermogen geuren af
te scheiden.

bevallen moeder en de boreling, een
bloempje voor de juf op school, een enkel
bloempje of juist een grote bos om verliefdheid/liefde te betuigen, bloemen bij jaardagen,

bevorderen, gewoon een bloemetje om kamer
of kantoor op te vrolijken en bloemenkransen

En niet te vergeten de bloemen in de natuur,
langs de weg, in de tuin die het landschap
kleuren en vergezichten onvergetelijk maken.
De bloem is zowel symboliek van bloei als van
vergankelijkheid. Kundige bloemschikkers maken de teerheid en schoonheid van bloemen
tot verheven uitdrukkingen van emoties in
sierlijke combinaties en decoraties waarmee
zij ons steeds weer weten te verrassen.
Verschillende culturen hebben typische vormen van bloemschikken voortgebracht zoals
hoofdkransen, bloemslingers om beelden of
gelovigen mee te omhangen en andere decoraties die vaak ontsprongen uit de eredienst in
tempels of andere plaatsen en momenten van
aanbidding.

Flowers are a victim of their own success. Even literally, because whenever people's
want to express their emotions (for each other) flowers are the victims, they come
in handy, they are sacrificed. People explain it away poignantly: 'Say it with flowers'.
Understandable, because the spell those flowers speak in the universal languages of
form, color and fragrance is unmatchable. Flower arrangements are also
called bouquets.

grave, a flower arrangement for the
mother who just gave birth and the
newborn, a flower for the teacher at school,
a single flower or just a big bunch to declare
one’s love, flowers at birthdays, anniversaries
and other milestones, a flower arrangement
for recovering patients to promote recovery,
just a flower to cheer up the room or office and
garlands at the funeral of a deceased loved
one.
And not to forget the flowers in nature, along
the way, in the garden that colors the landscape and makes vistas unforgettable.
The flower is symbolic of both prosperity and
of transience. Knowledgeable flower arrangers make the delicacy and beauty of flowers
to elevated expressions of emotions in graceful combinations and decorations with which
they always manage to surprise us.
Different cultures have typical forms of flower
arranging produced as head wreaths, garlands
to cover sculptures or believers and other decorations that often originated from the worship in temples or other places and times of
worship.

Ambassadeur van de bloemschikkunst in Suriname
Djanur
De vorm van bloemschikkunst waarbij als
basis het jonge, pas ontloken blad van de
kokospalm, wordt gebruikt heet Djanur. De
kokospalm is een van de meest fascinerende
bomen in de natuur. In de tropen staat hij bekend als de ‘levensboom’, omdat hij voorziet
in talrijke levensbehoeften zoals eten, drinken,
olie, brandstof, schaduw, hout, touw, onderdak, kleding en bekers.
Djanur betekent trouwens jong/vers cocosblad en het gedroogde (bruine) blad, waarmee ook wordt geschikt, heet blara.
Djanur bloemschikken komt oorspronkelijk uit
Midden Java en Bali en is in Suriname geïntroduceerd door Siti Nursijah Sunardi Atmodjo.
Na haar aankomst uit Indonesia in Suriname
in 1971, heeft ze vanaf 1979 tot 10 jaar geleden
aan honderden geïnteresseerden deze bloemschikkunst geleerd. Ze mag dan ook met recht
‘de moeder van de Djanur in Suriname’ genoemd worden. Het fotoalbum van eerdere
creaties van deze bloemschikkunstenares
doet met elke pagina de verbazing over haar
artisticiteit toenemen.
Hoe is het toch mogelijk om met jonge, verse
nerven van het kokosblad en verschillende soorten bloemen tot zulke indrukwekkende eindprestaties te komen? Symmetrische en asymmetrische composities, metershoge en heel
kleine maar daarom niet minder imposante?
Vaardige vingers en snelheid
De opmerking dat zij een website zou moeten
hebben waarop dat allemaal te zien is, schijnt
geen indruk op haar te maken. Toekijken hoe
het er van het begin af bij het schikken aan
toegaat, onthult voor een deel het geheim.
Er komt een nietmachine aan te pas om de
krullen en lussen van de kunstig geknipte en
gevouwen nerven van het jonge cocosblad op
hun plaats te houden.
Maar de vingervaardigheid, de snelheid en de
vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee één en ander
in het atelier van Siti Nursijah Sunardi Atmodjo

aan de Anamoestraat 11 gebeurt, is ronduit
verbazingwekkend.
Ben je even afgeleid door een prachtige orchidee in haar plantenkas vlakbij, of door een
bontgekleurde vlinder die langs fladdert, als je
weer kijkt is het djanur bloemstuk al een heel
eind naar een sierlijk eindproduct gevorderd.
In haar djanur album staan ook creaties met
vruchten, snoepgoed en origami, de kunst
van het tot bloemen vouwen van papier en
bankbiljetten, afkomstig uit Japan. De één nog
mooier dan de ander.
De djanur, het basismateriaal, krijgt de kunstenares sinds jaar en dag wekelijks aangeleverd uit Bakkie in het district Commewijne,
vertelt ze terloops.
Waardige ambassadeur
De houdbaarheid of levensduur van een
djanur bloemstuk kan heel lang zijn; veel langer dan van verse bloemen. In menige woonkamer kan het intussen droog en bruin geworden geraamte van sierlijk gevouwen
en gewonden kokosbladnerven worden
gevonden, het felicitatiekaartje nog eraan,
terwijl de bloemen en het opvulgroen al lang
zijn verwelkt. Blara geworden? In elk geval nog
te mooi om bij het vuil te zetten.
Met haar wonen en werken in Suriname
heeft Siti Nursijah Sunardi Atmodjo
een juweel toegevoegd aan het diadeem van onze multiculturele samenleving.
Elk djanur bloemstuk is een bloemenhulde aan ‘hoe wij hier samen
kwamen’ en ‘wansi o pe tata komopo’
(waar de voorvaderen ook vandaan
kwamen).
Een djanur bloemstuk dat een passagier aan
boord van het vliegtuig bij zich heeft, oogst
bewonderdende blikken van medepassagiers.
Djanur is een waardige ambassadeur van de
bloemschikkunst in en de cultuurschat van
Suriname.

Djanur
The form of flower arranging art taking as
basis the young, newly hatched leaves of the
coconut palm, is called Djanur. The coconut
palm is one of the most fascinating trees
in nature. In the tropics, it is known as
the "tree of life" because it provides many necessities such as
food, drink, oil, fuel, shade,
wood, rope, shelter,
clothing and cups.

which is also suitable for floral arrangements,
is called blara.
Djanur flower arranging is originally from
Central Java and Bali and introduced in
Suriname by Siti Nursijah Sunardi Atmodjo.
After her arrival from Indonesia in Suriname
in 1971, she has taught from 1979 on until 10
years ago to hundreds of interested people this
flower arrangement art. She can justifiably be
called ‘the mother of the djanur in Suriname'.
The photo album of previous creations of this
flower arrangement artist makes the amazement about her artistry increase with every
page.
How is it possible to use young, fresh veins of
the coconut leaves and different kinds of flowers to come to such impressive performances?
Symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions,
foot high to very small but no less impressive?
Deft fingers and speed
The comment that she should have a website
where all of this can be seen does not seem
to impress her. Watching it from the beginning
when the arranging is proceeding reveals in
part the secret. A stapler is needed to get the
curls and loops of the artfully cut and folded
veins of young coconut leaves in place.
But the finger dexterity, speed and ease with
which things happen in the studio of Siti Nursijah
Sunardi Atmodjo to 11 Anamoestraat, is quite
astonishing.
If you are momentarily distracted by a beautiful orchid in her greenhouse nearby, or a
brightly colored butterfly that flutters along,
and you look back the djanur arrangement has
progressed quite well towards a graceful end
product.
In her djanur album are creations with fruits,
sweets and origami, the art of folding paper
and banknotes into flowers, from Japan. Each
more beautiful than the other.
The djanur, the base material, has been delivered for many years to the artist on a weekly
basis from Bakkie in the district Commewijne,
she says casually.
Worthy ambassador
The durability or longevity of a djanur flower
arrangement can be very long, much longer
than one from fresh flowers. In many a living
room the dry and brown skeleton of gracefully
folded and wound coconut leaf veins can be
found, with the congratulatory card still attached, while the flowers and greenery have
long ago wilted. Became a Blara? In any case,
still too beautiful to be trashed.

et aantal bezoekers voor deze gebeurtenis staat
al jaren op meer dan twee miljoen! Belém is dan
ook heel trots op haar patroonheilige. In 1700 vond
een caboclo, een halfbloed indiaan, genaamd Plácido
José de Souza, nabij een kreek waar nu de wijk Nazaré
ligt, het beeldje van de Maagd. Hij bracht het beeldje naar
huis, maar de volgende dag was het verdwenen. Het leek
onwaarschijnlijk, maar toen de caboclo terug ging naar de
kreek, zag hij het beeldje op dezelfde plaats. Dit wonder
herhaalde zich toen hij het opnieuw bracht naar huis. Op
de plek bouwde Plácido een kapelletje dat in 1852 werd
vervangen door de Basílica Santuário, een replica van een
kerk in Rome, overgoten in goud en marmer.
Hier wordt de madonna veilig bewaard boven het
heiligdom. Wie deze van dichtbij wil zien, krijgt hiervoor de
kans in oktober. ‘Onze Vrouwe’ staat dan naast het altaar
in een glazen kast. Het beeldje dat bij de verschillende
processies wordt gebruikt, is namelijk een replica.

he number of visitors for this event has stood for
years at more than two million! Consequently Belem
is very proud of its patron saint. In 1700 a caboclo, a
half-breed Indian, called Plácido José de Souza, found near
a creek where the neighborhood Nazaré is currently situated, the statue of the Virgin. He brought the statue home,
but the next day it had disappeared. It seemed unlikely, but
when the caboclo went back to the creek, he saw the statue on the same place. This miracle repeated itself when
he brought it back home again. On the spot Plácido built a
chapel that was replaced in 1852 by the Basílica Santuário,
a replica of a church in Rome, covered in gold and marble.
The Madonna is kept safe here above the sanctuary.
Those wanting to see it up close will get the chance in
October. ‘Our Lady’ then stands in a glass case next to the
altar. The figurine used for the various processions, is in fact
a replica.

In 1793 werd de eerste bedevaart gehouden, nu bestaat Círio uit meer
dan één processie! De eerste vindt plaats op vrijdag, rijdend door
de verschillende woonbuurten in Groot-Belém. Mensen staan dan
langs de weg of volgen de grote stoet op fietsen en bromfietsen. In de
avond is er Auto do Círio, een drama- en muziekshow, op Praça Frei
Brandão, een bekend plein in de historische wijk Cidade Velha. Op de
tweede dag zijn de activiteiten geconcentreerd op de rivier. Pontons,
vissersboten, jachten en andere feestelijk versierde vaartuigen doen
dan mee aan deze grote rivierprocessie, die vanuit Estacão das Docas
vertrekt naar het plaatsje Icoaraci. Daar wordt het beeldje onder grote
publieke belangstelling opgehaald en teruggebracht naar Belém.
Vuurwerk en helikopters bepalen dan de skyline aan de waterkant.
Om meer mensen de gelegenheid te geven voor de straatprocessie,
wordt er in de avond een ‘mini’ processie gehouden van de Basílica
naar Catedral Da Sé. Op zondag vindt dan de grote processie plaats,
nu van Catedral Da Sé naar het plein van de Basílica waar men de
replica tot einde van de maand oktober kan bewonderen. Círio de
Nossa Senhora de Nazaré is een geweldige belevenis. Op blote
voeten loopt men door het centrum van Belém, sommigen doen
dit op hun knieën. Zieken vragen om genezing en mensen maken
hun wensen kenbaar door bijvoorbeeld met een maquette van een
huis te lopen. Tijdens Círio bestaat de gastronomie uit traditionele
inheemse gerechten van Pará. Belém behoort tot een van de vaste
bestemmingen van de SLM.

Procession
In 1793, the first pilgrimage was held; Cirio now consists of more than
one procession! The first takes place on Friday, driving through the
different neighborhoods in Greater Belem. People are standing along
the way or follow the big parade on bicycles and mopeds. In the evening Auto do Cirio is performed, a drama and music show, at Praça
Frei Brandão, a famous square in the historic neighborhood Cidade
Velha. On the second day, the activities are concentrated on the river.
Pontoons, fishing boats, yachts and other vessels festively decorated
participate in this great river procession, which departs from Estacao
das Docas to the town Icoaraci. There the statue is picked up and under great public interest returned to Belem. Fireworks and helicopters
define the skyline on the waterfront.

To allow more people the opportunity to see the street procession, in
the evening a ‘mini’ version is held from the Basilica to Catedral Da Se.
On Sunday the large procession takes place, this time from Catedral
da Sé to the square of the Basilica where the replica can be admired
until the end of October. Cirio de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré is a great
experience. Barefoot people walk through the center of Belem; some
do it on their knees. Sick people ask for healing and some make their
wishes known by walking with a model of a house. During Cirio the
gastronomy is composed of indigenous traditional dishes from Para.
Belem is one of the established destinations of the SLM.

Suriname in feiten
Ligging
Suriname ligt in Zuid-Amerika, net iets ten noorden van de evenaar. In het zuiden grenst het
aan Brazilie, in het noorden aan de Atlantische Oceaan, in het oosten aan het Franse overzeese departement Frans-Guiana en in het westen aan de voormalige Britse kolonie Guyana.
Hoofdstad
Aan de linkeroever van de brede Suriname rivier ligt de hoofdstad Paramaribo. De naam
zou afgeleid zijn van Parmurbo, een inheemse dorpje uit de zeventiende eeuw. Paramaribo
is een uitgestrekte stad met weinig hoogbouw. Het historische stadscentrum kenmerkt zich
door witgeschilderde monumentale houten panden met een onderbouw van rode bakstenen.
Vanwege de historische waarde plaatste de VN-cultuurorganisatie UNESCO de binnenstad in
2002 op de Werelderfgoedlijst.
Naam
In de drie Guyana’s woonde ooit de inheemse stam ‘Surinen’.Naar deze stam zou Suriname
genoemd zijn.
Oppervlakte
Suriname heeft een oppervlakte van zo’n 164.000 vierkante kilometer (circa vier keer
zo groot als Nederland!). Een groot deel van het land is bedekt met ongerept tropisch
regenwoud.
Bevolking
Suriname heeft ongeveer een half miljoen inwoners met voorouders uit alle windstreken.
De gevarieerde samenstelling van de bevolking vindt haar oorsprong in de koloniale tijd.
De oorspronkelijke bewoners, de inheemsen, kregen te maken met Europese (vooral
Nederlandse) overheersing. Vanaf 1650 stuurden de koloniale machthebbers Afrikaanse
negers als slaven naar Suriname. Hun nakomelingen worden tegenwoordig aangeduid als
afro-Surinamers of creolen. De Marrons zijn afstammelingen van weggelopen slaven. Rond
en na de afschaffing van de slavernij, in 1863 kwamen contractarbeiders uit India , Indonesie
en China naar Suriname om te werken op de plantages. In de koloniale tijd vestigden zich
ook Joden, Libanezen en Europeanen zich in Suriname. Na die tijd kwamen er ook Haitianen,
Brazilianen, Chinezen en Guyanezen.
Talen
De officiële taal is het Nederlands, maar Suriname kent nog zo’n een twintig andere talen.
De lingua Franca, de algemene omgangstaal, is het Sranan Tongo, met woorden van
Afrikaanse, Engelse, Portugese en Nederlandse oorsprong. Het Sarnami is een Surinaamse
variant van het Hindi die veel wordt gebezigd door de Hindostanen, de Surinamers van
Indiase afkomst. Ook veel Javanen, Chinezen, Marrons, en Inheemsen spreken nog hun eigen
taal of een variant daarvan.
Het Surinaamse wegennet bestaat uit verharde en onverharde wegen met een totale lengte
van 9.000 kilometer. Het verkeer rijdt links. Het Nationaal Vervoer Bedrijf en particuliere
lijnbussen verzorgen openbaar busvervoer. Daarnaast zijn er veel taxibedrijven. Ook zijn op
verschillende adressen in Paramaribo fietsen te huur. Internationale vluchten landen op de
Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, zo’n 45 kilometer ten zuiden van Paramaribo.
Van de luchthaven Zorg en Hoop in Paramaribo vertrekken vliegtuigjes en helicopters naar
airstrips (kleine vliegveldjes) in het binnenland. De rivieren van Suriname zijn in het algemeen
goed bevaarbaar.
Telecommunicatie
In Paramaribo, de kuststrook en in sommige binnenlandse dorpen staan telefooncellen.
Belkaarten zijn te koop bij het telecommunicatiebedrijf Telesur, bij poskantoren en bij de
meeste buurtwinkels en supermarkten. U kunt zich ook laten(terug)bellen in zo’n telefooncel;
het nummer staat op de gele overkapping. Het internationale toegangsnummer tot Suriname
is 00597. Collect belt u via 156(naar de Verenigde Staten)en 157 (naar Nederland). Doet u
dat met een mobiele telefoon, dan worden lokale gesprekskosten afgetrokken van Uw beltegoed. Het gebruik van een buitenlands gsm-toestel kan, maar is erg duur. Wilt u tegen binnenlands tarief bellen, dan kunt u de eigen SIM-kaart tijdelijk vervangen door een Surinaams
exemplaar. Het is dan wel handig om een regiovrij (SIM-lockvrij) toestel mee te nemen. Een
SIM-kaartje koopt u voor 5 US –dollar bij Telesur en bij telefoonwinkels. U dient zich wel te
legitimeren. Wilt u internetten? In Paramaribo bevindt zich in elke wijk of meer internetcafe’s.
In sommige districten kunt u eveneens een bezoekje aan cyberspace brengen.
Vereisten voor binnenkomst
Een geldig paspoort en eventueel een geldig visum. De vreemdelingendienst van de politie
vindt u op de hoek van de Mr.J Lachmonstraat en Dr.Ir.H.S Adhinstraat, in het gebouw van het
ministerie van Openbare Werken. Telefonisch bereikt u de vreemdelingendienst via 532109.
Een vaccinatiebewijs tegen gele koorts en cholera is alleen nodig als u uit een besmet gebied
komt.
Accommodatie
Paramaribo heeft verschillende grote hotels met goed voorziene kamers en airconditioning.
De kwaliteit van kleinere hotels, pensions en guesthouses is doorgaans redelijk. Verder is er
een groeiend aanbod van vakantiewoningen en appartementen. Ook het westelijke stadje
Nieuw-Nickerie beschikt over hotels, pensions, guesthouses en huurwoningen. Elders in de
kuststrook staan eveneens enkele hotelletjes en guesthouses. In het binnenland is de accommodatie doorgaans iets eenvoudiger. Sommige dorpen beschikken over een logeergebouw,
maar er zijn ook lodges in fascinerende natuurgebieden. Dichterbij de stad kunt u terecht in
verschillende vakantieparken.
Cuisine
Klimaat
Suriname heeft een tropisch, vochtig klimaat, met temperaturen die varieren van 23 graden
(’s nachts) tot 37 graden Celsius (’ s middags). Er zijn droge en natte seizoenen.
Het aanbod van de vele restaurants en eethuisjes is bijzonder gevarieerd. Geniet van
smakelijke Javaanse, Chinese , Creoolse , Hindostaanse, Koreaanse en Europese gerechten of
kies voor de internationale kaart.
Staatsbestel
Kleding
Een democratische republiek met een president aan het hoofd. De Nationale Assemblee, het
hoogste politieke orgaan, telt 51 volksvertegenwoordigers.
Munteenheid
In het vochtige klimaat is lichte, katoenen kleding bijzonder aan te bevelen. De meeste
bezoekers vinden het prettig om dagelijks een aantal keren te douchen en schone kleren aan
te trekken.
De Surinaamse dollar (SRD) is gelijk aan 100 centen. Sommige hotels en grote winkelzaken
accepteren vreemd geld en creditcards. Vreemde valuta kunt u veilig wisselen bij de handelsbanken en cambio’s. Geldtransacties op straat zijn af te raden. Met sommige bankpasjes kunt
u Surinaamse Dollars pinnen bij de geldautomaten.
Drinkwater
Elektriciteit
Suriname beschikt over moderne ziekenhuizen, goed opgeleide artsen en gezondheidswerkers. Diverse apotheken in stad en district zorgen voor voldoende aanvoer van medicamenten. Bent u van plan, het diepe binnenland te bezoeken, informeer dan tijdig naar de juiste
malariakuur! Recente informatie vindt u bij het Buro voor Openbare Gezondheidszorg, Rode
Kruislaan 22, Paramaribo.
Vrijwel overal 110/127 volt/60 hertz. Grote hotels beschikken doorgaans ook over aansluitingen voor 220 volt.

Suriname is situated on the continent of South America just North of the Equator. The country

Capital
On the West Bank of the broad Suriname River lies the Capital city Paramaribo. The name is

Name
In all three Guyanas there once lived the indigenous people named ‘Surinen’. From this world,

The original inhabitants, the indigenous Amerindian people had to deal with European
domination, with particular reference to Dutch dominance. Ever since 1650 the colonial rulers
forced Africans into slavery and sent them to Suriname. Their descendants are known as AfroSurinamers or Creoles. The maroons are descendants of runaway slaves. After the abolition
of slavery in 1863, contract laborers from India, Indonesia and China came to work on the
Suriname plantations. During the colonial period Jews, Lebanese and Europeans immigrated
to Suriname and long afterwards, Haitians, Brazilia , Chinese and Guyanese decided to make
Suriname their home.
Language
The official language is Dutch, but Suriname recognizes about twenty other languages.
The ‘Linga Franca’, the colloquial is Sranan Tongo, with words originally from Africa, English,
Portuguese and Dutch. Sarnami is a Surinamese variant of Hindi that is freely spoken by the
Hindustanis (Surinamese descendants of Indian immigrants). Javanese, Chinese, Maroons, as
well as the indigenous people speak their original languages or a variation thereof.
Climate
Suriname has a humid, tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 23 degrees Celsius at
night up to 37 degrees Celsius in the afternoons during some months of the year. There are
dry and wet seasons.
Government
Suriname is a democratic republic headed by a President. The National Assembly has 51
Parliamentarians.
Currency
The Surinamese Dollar (SRD) is equal to 100 cents. Some hotels and large department
stores accept foreign currency and credit cards. Foreign currency can safely be exchanged in
commercial banks and cambios. Money transactions on the street are not advised. With some
bank passes, one can acquire Suriname dollars at the automatic cash machines.

Transport
The Suriname road network consists of asphalted as well as sand roads, with a total length
of 9,000 kilometers. There is left-hand traffic. The National Transportation Company as well
as private bus operators provide public bus transportation. In addition, there are several
taxi companies and several places in Paramaribo also have cycles for hire. Foreign aircraft,
in general, use the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport Located about 45 km. South of
Paramaribo. From the local Zorg –en Hoop airport in Paramaribo, small aircraft and helicopters depart regularly to interior airstrips. Suriname’s rivers are navigable.
Telecommunications
In the city of Paramaribo, along the coastal area and also in some interior villages, telephone
booths are located. Calling cards can be bought at the Telephone company Telesur, post
offices and in many neighborhood shops and super markets. You may also be ‘called back’
at any of the telephone booths; the number is painted on the roof. The international code
for Suriname is: 00597. You can also call collect via 156(U.S.A) and 157 (Holland). However,
if you do that with a mobile telephone, the local telephone call costs will be deducted from
your telephone card balance. Usage of a foreign gsm cellular phone is possible, but is very
expensive. If you desire to call using the local rate, you’ll have to exchange your SIM card
temporarily for a Surinamese calling card. It is therefore a practical idea to bring along a
regional free (SIM- lock free cell phone). A SIM card costs $ 5.00 US at Telephone stores.
Be sure to have some form of identification handy. Do you want to go online? Every area of
Paramaribo has a few internet cafes. In some areas you can even enter cyberspace.
Entry Requirements
A valid passport is needed, and if required a valid visa. The Police administered Department
for foreigners is located in the building of the Ministry of Public Works on the corner of the
Mr. J.Lachmonstraat and the Dr. Ir.H.S.Adhinstraat. This office can be reached by telephone:532109. A vaccination certificate against yellow fever and cholera is only required when
you arrive from infected area.
Accommodation
Paramaribo has various large hotels with well-appointed comfortable air-conditioned rooms.
The quality of smaller hotels, pensions and guesthouses is passable. In addition, there is an
increasing number of vacation houses and apartments. The western town of Nickerie also
has hotels, pensions, guesthouses and vacation houses for rental. Elsewhere on the coastal
area smaller hotels and guesthouses can be found. In the interior, the accommodation is
somewhat simpler. Some villages have a simple guesthouse, but there are also tourist lodges
in fascinating nature areas. Near the city you will also find several vacation park areas.
Cuisine
There is a wide variety of restaurants and eating houses. You can enjoy tasty Javanese,
Chinese, Creolese, Hindi, Korean and Dutch food, or choose from the international menu.
Clothing
In the humid climate, light cotton clothing is highly recommended. Many visitors find it a
good idea, to take a shower several times daily, then change into clean clothing.
Drinking water
In Paramaribo, tap water is clean and safe. Good quality bottled Surinamese natural water is
also available everywhere.
Health
Suriname has modern hospitals, well-trained and skillful doctors and health care workers.
Several pharmacies in the city and districts ensure regular and adequate supply of medicines.
If you are planning to visit the deep interior, please seek advice in advance about the correct
anti-malaria medicine. Up to date information can be obtained from the Bureau of Public
Health, 22 Rode Kruislaan, Paramaribo.
Almost everywhere there is 110/127 volt hertz. The larger hotels generally also have 220 volt
connections.
