Veiligheid is binnen de luchtvaartsector de belangrijkste prioriteit,
zo ook voor de SLM. Veiligheid is niet alleen belangrijk voor de
bemanning en de passagiers maar voor de gehele organisatie. Het is
daarom noemenswaardig te vermelden dat de SLM erin geslaagd is
haar E-IOSA en ISO 9001 certificering te behalen. De E-IOSA staat
voor Enhanced IATA Operational Safety Audit. Deze certificering is
een internationaal erkend en geaccepteerd evaluatiesysteem, dat
ontworpen is om het operationele beheer en de controlesystemen
binnen luchtvaartmaatschappijen te beoordelen. Door het steeds
behalen van de E- IOSA certificering welke 2 jaar geldig is, behoort de
SLM tot de groep luchtvaartmaatschappijen waaraan door de IATA de
status “An IOSA Certified Airline” is toegekend.
Voor het continu verbeteren van de interne organisatie en
daardoor de dienstverlening naar de klant toe, heeft de SLM het
kwaliteitsmanagements de ISO 9001 norm geïmplementeerd. ISO
staat voor International Organization for Standardization en is een
internationaal keurmerk voor kwaliteit.
Het voldoen aan de verwachtingen van de klant is van belang om te
overleven in de markt. Hierdoor kan de klanttevredenheid steeds naar
een hoger niveau worden getild. De beide managementsystemen zijn
de keerzijde van dezelfde medaille.

entire organization. So it’s worth mentioning that Surinam Airways has
succeeded in obtaining its E-IOSA and ISO 9001 certification. E-IOSA
stands for Enhanced IATA Operational Safety Audit, this certification is an

to assess the operational management and control systems within
airlines. By continuing to obtain the E-IOSA certification, valid for 2 years,
Surinam Airways is among the airlines being awarded “An IOSA Certified

For continuous improvements of the internal organization and thus
service to the customer, Surinam Airways has implemented the quality
management system according to the ISO 9001 standard. ISO stands
for International Organization for Standardization and is an international
certification mark for quality.
Meeting the customer’s demands is important to survive in the market.
This way, customer satisfaction can be continually improved. Both
management systems are two sides of the same coin.

spend the holidays in tropical Suriname. And rightly so! The celebration of
New Year’s Eve (Owruyari) in particular is a unique experience, one that
you should have at least once.
The beautiful island of Aruba has been one of Surinam Airways’ regular
destinations for years now, and more and more visitors to Suriname are
combining their stay with a beach holiday on this gorgeous island. And
Aruba’s world famous carnival, in February 2016, is another reason to

“Sabaku” is the name of Surinam Airways’ inflight magazine. It is pronounced “SA-BA-KOO” with the emphasis
on the last syllable. Sabaku is the Surinamese word for
the snowy egret (and some other
species of egrets). Snowy egrets are small, graceful, longlegged birds with a long, pointed, powerful bill.
At sunrise, the birds leave the communal roost and nesting
sites within a short period of time. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At
dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves.
The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with
the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky.
Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus
breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost
of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

moet voortaan een douane passagiersdeclaratieformulier invullen. Het nieuwe
declaratieformulier komt samen met het reeds
van toepassing zijnde immigratieformulier dat
ingevuld en overhandigd moet worden aan de
Militaire Politie.
Het is in de internationale burgerluchtvaart gebruikelijk dat elke passagier zich bij binnenkomst
in een land met zijn of haar bagage bij de douaneambtenaar aanmeldt en een passagiersdeclaratieformulier overlegt.
Met de introductie van het passagiersdeclaratieformulier voldoet de Surinaamse Douane aan
een internationale verplichting, aangezien hierdoor wordt voorzien in het optimaliseren van de
controle op de legale of illegale invoer van: verdovende middelen, bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten, alsook vuurwapens
en munitie, persoonlijke- en handelsgoederen en vreemde
valuta.
Everyone who enters Suriname needs to complete a customs passenger declaration form
from now on. The new declaration form is
filled in together with the already applicable
immigration form that needs to be completed
and handed to the Military Police.
In international civil aviation, it is customary
for every passenger to report to the customs
officer with his or her baggage on arrival, and
to hand over a passenger declaration form.
With the introduction of the passenger declaration form, Surinamese Customs will adhere
to an international obligation, seeing how this
provides optimization of inspection regarding
the legal or illegal import of: narcotics, endangered animals and plants, as well as firearms
and munition, personal effects and commodities, and foreign
currency.

Sabaku, zo heet dit inflight magazine van Surinam Airways. Je spreekt het uit als ‘sabbakoe’, met de klemtoon
op de laatste lettergreep. Sabaku is het Surinaamse
woord voor reiger. In Suriname leven achttien soorten
reigers, waarvan er vier ‘sabaku’ worden genoemd. Deze
kleine, sierlijke vogels zijn uitgerust met lange poten en
een lange, krachtige snavel. De verschillende soorten leven vaak met elkaar samen.
Bij zonsopkomst verlaten de sabaku’s collectief de gemeenschappelijke slaapverblijven in de mangrovebossen langs de
rivier. Een kolonie vliegende reigers biedt een indrukwekkende aanblik. Aan het eind van de dag keren de vogels opnieuw in groepen
terug naar hun onderkomens voor de nacht. Het wit van hun veren
steekt dan mooi af tegen het roze of purper van de avondhemel.
Sabaku’s zijn sociale vogels: ze slapen en broeden gemeenschappelijk. In Paramaribo vinden we een broedkolonie en slaapplaats
van sabaku’s langs de Surinamerivier aan de monding van de Van
Sommelsdijckskreek.

TRANSIT TO PARADISE...
Waar de weg na een drie uur durende bus- of autorit vanuit Paramaribo simpelweg ophoudt, ligt het Marron dorpje Atjoni.
Where the road simply stops after a three-hour bus or car ride from Paramaribo, you’ll find the Maroon village of
Dit dorpje kan gezien worden als de transit naar het paradijs.
Atjoni. This village can be considered the transit to paradise.
Het is de tussenstop naar eco-toeristische dorpen. Hier begint een
spetterend avontuur of ultieme rust (of een combinatie van beide).
Het is maar waarvoor je kiest! Omdat er in Atjoni zelf niet al te veel
te beleven is, moet je verder de rivier op. Neem plaats in één van de
tientallen korjalen die afgemeerd liggen op de rivier en geniet van de
onmetelijke schoonheid van de door het Amazonewoud stromende
Boven-Surinamerivier. Met een beetje geluk kun je in de bomen hele
families apen of exotische vogels spotten. De korjalen zijn gemaakt
van uitgeholde boomstammen en worden bestuurd door de meest
ervaren bootsmannen. De korjalen brengen je via wilde sula’s
(stroomversnellingen) naar de dorpen langs de rivier.
Je bevindt je in het gebied van de Marrons en met name van de
Saramaccaanse stam. Maak kennis met de cultuur, de taal en gewoontes
van deze mensen. In de dorpen kun je met toestemming van de
dorpsoudsten of een gids een kijkje nemen en de leefgewoonten

ervaren of een voettocht maken naar de kostgrondjes die veelal
enkele kilometers verwijderd zijn van het dorp. In de avonduren
kun je verrast worden met een Awasa dansopvoering waarbij
je niet kunt weigeren om te participeren. In de eco-toeristische
dorpen, speciaal opgezet voor het ontvangen van toeristen, kun je
overnachten in traditionele hutjes en cabana’s waarvan de inrichting
toch enigszins geriefelijk genoemd kan worden. Er is zoveel nieuws te
beleven. Laat je verwennen met smakelijk bereid wild-vlees of diverse
vissoorten als je een liefhebber bent van vis. Ga liggen in een woeste
sula, een uniekere massage kun je je niet voorstellen. Ga hengelen
naar gigantische rivier ‘monsters’. Ook vogelliefhebbers zullen zich
gezegend voelen wanneer de zon in de ochtenden ontwaakt. Geniet
van het gezang en het bekijken van zoveel unieke vogels.Transit vanuit
Atjoni naar het paradijs om er heerlijk in een hangmat te liggen en
vergeet voor enkele momenten het hectische stadsleven.
Here, a smashing adventure or ultimate relaxation begins (or a
combination of both). It’s your choice! Because there’s not a lot to
do in Atjoni itself, you’ll have to go down the river. Take a seat in one
of the dozens of corials that are moored on the river, and enjoy the
immeasurable beauty of the flowing Upper Suriname River through
the Amazonian forest. With a bit of luck, you can spot entire families
of monkeys or exotic birds in the trees. The corials are made from
hollowed-out tree trunks and are captained by the most experienced
of boatswains. The corials take you to the village along the river
through wild sulas (rapids).
You are in the area of the Maroons, namely the Saramaccan tribe.
Get acquainted with the culture, the language and customs of these
people. In the villages, with permission from the village elders or a
guide, you can take a look and experience the habits, or make a trip on
foot to the agricultural plots that are usually a few kilometres away
from the village. In the evening, you can be surprised with an Awasa
dance performance that you just cannot refuse to participate in.
In the eco-tourism villages, especially established in order to host
tourists, you can stay the night in traditional huts and cabanas, the
decoration of which can be described as reasonably comfortable.
There are so many new things to experience. Allow yourself to be
treated to tastily prepared game or various types of fish if you’re
a fish lover. Lie down in a wild sula, it’s hard to imagine a more
unique massage. Go fishing for gigantic river ‘monsters’. Bird lovers
will also feel blessed when the sun awakes in the mornings. Enjoy
the singing and the watching of so many unique birds. Transit from
Atjoni to paradise, to lie down comfortably in a hammock, and
forget about the frantic urban life for a few moments.

The following travel advice will make your journey more comfortable:
STOELRIEMEN Maak vóór de start en landing uw stoelriemen vast. Houdt
deze om zolang het ‘fasten seat belt’ -lichtje aan is. Ervaren reizigers houden
de riemen de gehele reis losjes om. Dit uit zorg voor plotselinge turbulentie.
YOUR SEATBELTS Before take off and landing, fasten your seatbelts and keep
these fastened until the ‘fasten seat belt sign’ is turned off. As a precaution, you
may keep your seatbelt loosely fastened during the entire flight.
ONTSPANNING Wij kunnen u voorzien van kranten en tijdschriften. Op de
Mid-Atlantische route worden tijdens de reis films vertoond, terwijl u met behulp van uw koptelefoon kunt genieten van films en aangename muziek. Door
de atmosfeer in de cabine en het stilzitten kunnen uw voeten opzwellen. Draag
daarom ruimzittende schoenen of slippers.
RELAXATION A selection of international newspapers and magazines is available
on the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v.v). And you can also enjoy
music and films via headsets. Because of the cabin pressure and enforced sitting
for several hours, your feet may become swollen. Wear, therefore, roomy shoes
or slippers.
SPECIALE MAALTIJDEN Gebruikt u op doktersvoorschrift of uit geloofsovertuiging speciale maaltijden, dan serveren wij zolang het kan, die graag. Maak uw
verzoeken duidelijk kenbaar bij de reservering van uw vlucht.
SPECIAL MEALS Special meal requests, either because of medical or religious can
be fulfilled. Please advise us of this when making flight reservations.
GEZONDHEID In het vliegtuig is de lucht droger dan daarbuiten. Drink daarom zoveel mogelijk tijdens een vlucht. Alcohol, koffie en thee onttrekken vocht
aan het lichaam, beperk daarom het gebruik. Beweeg (zeker op lange vluchten)
zoveel mogelijk. In de magazine staan er oefeningen die u in uw stoel kunt doen.
De boordapotheek bevat medicijnen voor de meest voorkomende kwaaltjes.
Gebruikt u medicijnen, neem die dan altijd mee in uw handbagage.
KINDEREN Reist u met een baby? De steward(ess) maakt graag het flesje voor
de baby klaar. Waarschuw op tijd, dan hoeft uw kleintje niet te wachten. Op
de Mid-Atlantische route (Paramaribo – Amsterdam v.v.) kunnen wij u ook bij
noodgevallen voor babyvoeding en luiers zorgen. Laat uw kinderen veel drinken. Geeft u borstvoeding drink dan zelf ook meer dan normaal. Geef uw
baby bij start en landing een fopspeen of flesje met drinken, om de druk op de
trommelvliezen te verminderen. Een ouder kind geeft u een zuigsnoepje of een
stukje kauwgum. Zelf kunt u eventueel ook geeuwen of slikken om de druk te
verminderen.
ELEKTRONISCHE APPARATUUR In het vliegtuig mag u geen apparaten gebruiken waarin een zender of ontvanger zijn verwerkt. Mobiele telefoons en
laptops werken namelijk storend op het gevoelige navigatie systeem van het
vliegtuig.
HANDBAGAGE Iedere passagier mag één (1) stuk handbagage meenemen.
Het moet van een dergelijk formaat zijn dat u het kwijt kunt onder uw stoel.
De bergplaatsen boven uw hoofd zijn alleen bestemd voor lichte artikelen, zoals hoeden, mantels en andere lichte artikelen. Open de klep voorzichtig en
kijk bij het opendoen van de hat-rack uit dat de spullen erin niet eruit vallen.

HEALTH The atmosphere inside the aircraft is dryer than that on the ground ,
therefore you should drink as much as possible during a flight . Alcohol , coffee
and tea however, remove fluids from the body . Use these stimulans as little as
possible. Move about as much as possible ( especially on longer flights ). In the
magazine you will find exercises which you can do while sitting in your aircraft
seat. The medical dispensary on board contains medicine for the most anticipated
minor complaints . If you take medicine regularly , be sure to always place this in
your hand baggage.
CHILDREN Are you traveling with a baby? The steward(ess) will gladly prepare the
baby bottle for you. Please give sufficient advance notice so that your baby does not
have to wait. On the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v. v.) we can in
case of emergency also provide baby food and diapers(limited available). For older
children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must drink a
lot. If you are breast- feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give your
baby a pacifier or a bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give
an older child either candy or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or
swallow to lessen the pressure.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use
electronic equipment with transmitters and receivers. The use of cellular phones,
laptops and other electronic equipment can disrupt the sensitive navigation system
and are not allowed during take-off and landing.
HAND LUGGAGE Every passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry on hand luggage that fits easily under the aircraft seat. The luggage bins above your head
are only intended for light articles such as hats, coats , flowers etc. Open the flap
carefully so that items do not fall out.
BAGAGE Voor volwassenen en voor kinderen vanaf 2 jaar mogen tussen Paramaribo en Amsterdam maximaal 1 stuk van maximaal 25 kg (54 lbs) meenemen
in de Tourist Class. In de Business Class geldt 2 stuks van 32 kg (70 lbs). Op
vluchten van en naar de Verenigde Staten van America en de Regionale Route
geldt als bagageregeling : 1 (een) stuk met een totale afmeting van maximaal
158 cm (62 inch) (lengte+breedte+hoogte) en een gewicht van maximaal 23
kg (50 lbs.
Heeft u meer bagage, dan moet u bijbetalen.
Voorzie zowel binnen- als buitenkant van uw bagage van adresstickers. Deze
hoeven aan de buitenkant voor voor iedereen leesbaar te zijn.
LUGGAGE On the route between Paramaribo and Amsterdam , adults and children from the age of 2, are allowed 1 piece of maximum 25 kilo ( 54 lbs ) luggage
in Tourist class, and 2 pieces of 32 kilo ( 70 lbs ) maximum in Business class.
Different luggage regulations apply on flights to and from the United Statesand
the other Regional Destinations. On before mentioned routes each passenger is
allowed 1 (one) piece of luggage with a maximum dimension of 158 cm. (62 in.)
( lenght + width + height) and a maximum weight of 23 kg ( 50 lbs ). If you have
additional then there is an excess baggage fee. Please place address stickers on
both the interior and exterior of your luggage . On the exterior, these don’t have to
be readable for everyone.
HERBEVESTIGEN Verblijft u ergens langer dan 72 uur, dan moet u tenminste
72 uur vóór vertrek uw gereserveerde door- of terugreis opnieuw bevestigen.
Op de vluchten Paramaribo – Amsterdam v.v. is deze regel niet van toepassing.

Ze is bedolven onder prestigieuze music awards en wordt beschouwd als één van de grootste muzikale
talenten en heeft als thuisbasis Nederland en Suriname, maar voelt zich vooral ‘muzikale wereldburger’.
We hebben het over de eenentwintigjarige singer/songwriter en muzikant Lady Shaynah (Shanice Dionne

Lady Shaynah werd driemaal genomineerd voor de
Surinaamse ‘Suripoku Award’ in de categorieën Beste
Nieuwkomer, Beste Vrouwelijke Artiest en Suripoku van

diverse prijzen.
Ook Nederland erkende het muzikale talent en beloonde
haar met een flink aantal prijzen zoals de Music Matters
Award en het 2015 Radio 6 Soul & Jazz talent. Bovendien
werd ze uitgeroepen tot Muziekambassadeur van Rotterdam,
de stad waar ze woont en studeert.
Shaynah heeft gekozen voor de titel “DARE” voor haar
debuutalbum omdat ze in het afgelopen jaar veel durf en
moed heeft moeten tonen. Zo emigreerde ze van Suriname
naar Nederland voor haar studie aan het Rotterdamse
Conservatorium (Codarts) en ging ze voor het eerst op
zichzelf wonen. Shaynah durfde het aan om zichzelf muzikaal
opnieuw te (her)ontdekken. En muzikale moed kan de
energieke Shaynah zeker niet worden ontzegd. Zo schrijft
ze haar eigen teksten en muziek en kiest niet voor de meest
voor de hand liggende populaire muziekstromen maar voor
de bijzondere combinatie van soul, funk, pop en jazz.
Shaynah is geboren op Curaçao en heeft een Surinaamse
moeder, de bekende zangeres Helianthe Redan, die tevens
haar manager is. De muzikale appel valt dus niet ver van de
boom. Vanaf haar derde jaar woonde en studeerde Shaynah
afwisselend in Suriname en Nederland. Voor haar optredens
bezocht Shaynah vele landen en daardoor voelt ze zich ‘een
muzikale wereldburger’.
Shaynah weet dat zij een voorbeeldfunctie heeft voor veel
jongeren in Nederland en Suriname en wil graag jonge mensen
stimuleren om al hun talenten te benutten. “Niets is onmogelijk,
al je dromen kun je waarmaken,” zo weet Shaynah zeker. Niet
voor niets is de titel van haar eerste single ‘Werk it’. Groot
dromen en vooral hard werken is een must voor iedereen die
zijn dromen wil nastreven. “Niets komt je vanzelf aanwaaien, hoe
groot je talent ook is,” aldus Shaynah, die zelf keihard werkt en
studeert om alles uit haar talent te halen.
Haar grootste muzikale missie is om te werken aan een eigen,
herkenbare sound: het kenmerk van de grote muzikale talenten
in de wereld.“Ik wil dat mensen na de eerste tonen of het eerste
stemgeluid weten dat ze luisteren naar een Lady Shaynah nummer.
Ik ben nog jong en dus nog op zoek naar mijn eigen sound, waarin
zeker mijn Caraïbische roots zullen doorklinken,” aldus de nu al
uiterst succesvolle singer/songwriter.
Wie de kans heeft om een concert van Lady Shaynah bij te

in Suriname and the Netherlands. For her shows, Shaynah
has been to many countries, making her feel like ‘a musical
global citizen’.
Shaynah knows she is a role model to many young people in
the Netherlands and Suriname, and is eager to encourage
young people to make full use of all their talents. “Nothing
is impossible, you can realize all your dreams,” Shaynah
knows. Her first single is called ‘Werk It’ for a reason.
Dreaming big and hard work in particular is a must for
anyone who wants to follow their dreams. “Nothing in life
comes easy, no matter how much talent you have,” says
Shaynah, who works and studies very hard to make full use
of her talent.
Her biggest musical mission is to work on her own,
recognizable sound: something all the world’s big musical
talents have. “I want people to know they’re listening to
a Lady Shaynah song after the first notes or vocals. I’m
still young, and so I am still looking for my own sound,
wherein my Caribbean roots will definitely come through,”
the already very successful singer/songwriter says.
Anyone with the opportunity to attend a Lady Shaynah
show shouldn’t pass it up. A concert by this multi-talent is
a great experience, and a unique combination of musical
styles. Lady Shaynah alone behind the piano, playing her
guitar or accompanied by her 10-man band (Le Band): it
will be a night to remember.

EEN STUKJE JUNGLE IN DE STAD
Midden in groengebied ‘De Cultuurtuin’ ligt de Paramaribo
Zoo. Hartje stad maar tegelijkertijd een eerste kennismaking met de bewoners van de Surinaamse jungle; ideaal
voor een dagje uit met kinderen. De dierentuin is elke dag
open, behalve op 1 januari.
Voor wie heel grote dierentuinen is gewend, is deze diergaarde
eenvoudig van opzet. Maar al is de Paramaribo Zoo van
bescheiden formaat, er valt voldoende te beleven voor een
halve dag vermaak. Zo blijven de capriolen van de kwatta-apen
(‘bosduivels’) op het apeneiland vlak bij de ingang, zelfs als je al
eerder naar de zoo bent geweest, een fascinerend schouwspel.
De langharige, zwarte dieren met hun kleine hoofdjes en
enorme grijpstaarten slingeren enthousiast aan de touwen
en boomstammen. Ze gebruiken daarbij hun staart als vijfde
ledemaat, erg leuk om naar te kijken. Sinds enkele jaren is er ook
een tweede apeneiland met kwatta-apen.
Aan de andere kant van de zoo zijn meer apensoorten gehuisvest,
zoals de vertederende doodshoofdaapjes en de kapucijnerapen.
En wat deze dierentuin zo bijzonder maakt, is dat ook wilde apen
er een kijkje komen nemen. Ze slaan bezoekers vanuit de bomen
nieuwsgierig gade, en gooien soms met vruchtjes om aandacht
te trekken.
Een paar jaar geleden is de dierentuin flink opgeknapt.Verschillende
diersoorten hebben een groter verblijf gekregen, waarin hun
natuurlijke omgeving zo veel als mogelijk is nagebootst. Zo kan
de reuzenotter lekker badderen in zijn eigen ‘meertje’, en hebben
ook de spinnen, slangen en reptielen hun eigen gebouw. Diverse
tropische vissen zwemmen rond in het aquarium.
De dieren in deze dierentuin komen hoofdzakelijk uit ZuidAmerika. Er zijn dan ook verschillende dieren te bekijken die in
het bos van Suriname leven, maar die de gemiddelde bezoeker
aan het binnenland zal ze daar niet snel tegenkomen. Naast de
eerder genoemde dieren zijn er onder meer capibara’s, (reuzen)
miereneters, pingo’s en pakira’s (bosvarkentjes), een bijzondere
zwarte arend, diverse kleurige vogels en grote en kleinere
katachtigen, waaronder drie jaguars.
De Paramaribo Zoo heeft naast een recreatieve ook een
educatieve functie. Midden in de dierentuin liggen bijvoorbeeld

een paar nagemaakte reuzenschildpadden. Hier wordt met
teksten en objecten het verhaal verteld van de zeeschildpadden,
die elk jaar met duizenden naar de Surinaamse kust komen om
er hun eieren te leggen.Veel schildpadden raken echter verstrikt
in de netten van vissers of krijgen plastic afval binnen, en hun
eieren worden geraapt en opgegeten. De dieren worden op
die manier met uitsterven bedreigd. De zoo hoopt hierin met
voorlichting verandering in te helpen brengen.
Bij alle verblijven staan verder duidelijke borden met informatie
over de dieren, zoals de wetenschappelijke en Surinaamse naam
van de diersoort en haar leefgebied. In het amfitheater worden
soms films vertoond, lezingen of voorstellingen georganiseerd en
educatieve of gewoon gezellige kinderactiviteiten gehouden. Ook
het educatiecentrum wordt regelmatig, vooral door groepen,
gebruikt voor educatieve activiteiten.
Even uitrusten kan bij de kleine bar, waar versnaperingen en
drankjes verkocht worden. Vlak ernaast ligt ook de grote
speeltuin. Op zondag en bijzondere feestdagen worden hier
vaak extra kinderactiviteiten georganiseerd, zoals schminken,
meerijden met een treintje, paardrijden en trampolinespringen.
De weg naar de uitgang loopt door de kinderboerderij. Hier
staan enkele karakteristieke Surinaamse houten huisjes, waarin
geiten, schapen, maar ook konijnen en cavia’s verblijven. Buiten
grazen een paar ezeltjes en twee hertjes, die zich soms laten
aaien. Samenvattend geeft de Paramaribo Zoo een goed beeld
van Suriname en de dieren die er leven. Een aanrader voor
iedereen, met of zonder kinderen.

De Paramaribo Zoo is, sinds de sluiting van twee kleine
privé-dierentuintjes, de enige dierentuin van Suriname.
De dierentuin bestaat sinds 1972, en was een initiatief van
oud-premier Johan Adolf Pengel. Hij richtte zes jaar eerder
de Stichting Dierentuin op.Tot de officiële opening van de
Paramaribo Zoo, Pengel was inmiddels overleden, liepen
de tijgers en andere dieren gewoon rond in zijn achtertuin.

A BIT OF JUNGLE IN THE CITY
In the middle of green area ‘The Culture Garden’, you
can find Paramaribo Zoo. In the heart of the city, a first
meeting with the inhabitants of the Surinamese jungle;
ideal for a day out with children. The zoo is open every
day, except on January 1.
For those used to very large zoos, this one has a simple design.
But even though Paramaribo Zoo is modest in size, there is
plenty to do for half a day of amusement. The antics of the
black spider monkeys on the monkey island near the entrance
always make for a fascinating show, even if you’ve been to the
zoo before. The long-haired, black animals with their small head
and huge grabbing tails swing enthusiastically from the ropes
and tree trunks. They use their tails as a fifth limb, very cool to
watch. A few years ago, a second monkey island with black spider
monkeys was added.
The other side of the zoo is home to more species of monkeys,
like the endearing squirrel monkeys and the capuchin monkeys.
And what makes this zoo so special, is that wild monkeys also
come to take a look. They watch the visitors from the trees with
curiosity, and sometimes throw pieces of fruit to attract attention.
A few years ago, the zoo was renovated significantly. Various
animals got a bigger enclosure, in which their natural environment
is emulated as much as possible. For instance, the giant otter
can splash around in its own ‘lake’, and the spiders, snakes and
reptiles also have their own building. Various tropical fish swim
around in the aquarium.
The animals in this zoo mainly come from South America. That
means several of the animals live in the Surinamese forest, but
the average visitor to the inland won’t quickly encounter them. In
addition to the previously mentioned animals, there are, among
others, capybaras, (giant) ant eaters, collared peccaries (forest
pigs), an extraordinary black eagle, various colourful birds and
large and smaller felines, including three jaguars.
In addition to providing recreation, Paramaribo Zoo also serves
to educate. In the middle of the zoo, for instance, there are a few
models of giant tortoises. Here, with texts and objects, the story

is told of the sea turtles that come to the shores of Suriname by
the thousands each year, to lay their eggs. Many turtles, however,
get caught up in the nets of fishermen, or ingest plastic waste,
and their eggs are collected and eaten. Due to this, the animals
are threatened with extinction. Through education, the zoo is
hoping to help change this.
Also, all the enclosures have clear signs with information about
the animals, such as the scientific and Surinamese name of the
animal and its habitat. From time to time, films are shown in
the amphitheatre, lectures or shows are organized, and activities
are held for children, educational or just for fun. The educational
centre is used regularly, especially for groups, for instructive
activities.
You can take a short break at the small bar, where snacks
and drinks are sold. Right next to it, you’ll also find the large
playground. On Sundays and holidays, extra activities are often
organized for children, such as face painting, going on a train
ride, horse riding, and trampolining.
The way to the exit leads through the petting zoo, which contains
some characteristic Surinamese wooden houses, home to goats
and sheep, but also rabbits and guinea pigs. Outside, a few
donkeys and two deer graze, which can sometimes be petted. To
sum up, Paramaribo Zoo provides a good overview of Suriname
and the animals that live there. Highly recommended for anyone,
with or without children.

De grote carnavalsparade in Oranjestad is de ‘grande finale’ van het carnavalsseizoen ( 7 februari 2016) en de grootste parade
van alle carnavalsoptochten op Aruba. Zowel deelnemers als publiek zetten elk jaar Oranjestad volledig op z’n kop. Geweldige
plekken om naar de grote parade te kijken zijn langs de L.G. Smith Boulevard en de Vondellaan. Onder de gloeiende zon hullen
de deelnemers aan de parade zich in prachtige verentooien en glitterende carnavalskostuums.
Aan de massa van vaak honderden deelnemers gaan enkele
bijzondere, individuele pronkstukken en originele praalwagens vooraf.
Het schouwspel van langslopende en dansende carnavalgroepen
in alle kleuren van de regenboog is een ervaring op Aruba die je
meegemaakt moet hebben. Over het hele parcours van de grote
parade in Oranjestad staan vele trailers en tribunes in alle maten en
gewichten. Als toeschouwer van het carnaval zul je je op geen enkel
moment vervelen. Er heerst een gemoedelijke sfeer en iedereen kan
zich naar hartenlust vermaken.
Carnaval op Aruba staat ook synoniem voor krachtige
carnavalsmuziek. Op grote trucks rijden tientallen bands met mobiele
muziekinstallaties voorbij. Het carnavalslied, ofwel ‘roadmarch’, met
de meest pakkende tekst en de leukste melodie is gedurende het
hele carnavalsseizoen te horen. Tegen de tijd dat de grote finale van
het carnavalsseizoen is aangebroken met de grote carnavalsparade
in Oranjestad op carnavalszondag, kent iedereen dit carnavalslied uit
z’n hoofd. Jaren na dato hoor je ook nog steeds de verschillende
winnende carnavalsnummers van voorgaande jaren. Ze gaan niet
meer uit je hoofd; van ‘do the wiper’, tot ‘hit the floor’ en ‘jump with
your towel’.

Tijdens de carnavalsperiode, die maar liefst een maand duurt, wandel je
van straatfeest naar straatfeest (de zogenaamde jump-ups) en kun je je
laten verrassen door één van de vele spectaculaire carnavalsoptochten
op Aruba. Carnaval op Aruba is zo leuk dat je er gewoon niets van wil
missen. Doe mee met het grootste feest van het jaar op Aruba! Bekijk
snel de mogelijkheden voor een heerlijke carnaval op Aruba!
Deelnemers van alle leeftijden zetten hun beste beentje voor tijdens
de vele carnavalsverkiezingen. Carnaval op Aruba is ook synoniem voor
krachtige muziek, zang, dans en een groot feest in de zinderende zon.
De grote carnavalsparades in San Nicolas en Oranjestad zetten elk jaar
deze steden volledig op z’n kop. De deelnemers aan de carnavalsparades
hijsen zich in de meest prachtige verentooien en glittergewaden,
waarbij kosten noch moeite worden gespaard. Ook zijn er kleurrijke
praalwagens te bewonderen, waar veelal een prachtig uitgedoste
carnavalskoningin op staat te pronken die onvermoeibaar het massaal
toegestroomde publiek toewuift. Sommige carnavalsgroepen op Aruba
tellen wel honderden deelnemers en als kijker naar het carnaval zal
je je geen enkel ogenblik vervelen. Er heerst een ontspannen sfeer
waarbij iedereen zich naar hartenlust kan vermaken met lekkere hapjes,
drankjes en feestelijke taferelen.

Enkele hoogtepunten van het komende
carnavalsseizoen op Aruba:
Het carnavalsseizoen wordt elk jaar officieel ingeluid met de
Fakkeloptocht die begin januari door de straten van Oranjestad trekt.
Samen met de beroemde lichtjesparade is dit fonkelende spektakel de
enige carnavalsparade die ‘s avonds plaatsvindt. Kleine lampjes worden
in prachtige kostuums genaaid en creëren een magisch effect op het
paradeparcours. Ook de kleinschaligere kinderparades in de namiddag zijn
een lust voor het oog. Er doen vele schattige kinderen mee, uitgedost
in uiterst creatieve en kleurrijke kostuums. Elke buurt heeft zo z’n eigen
kinderparade zoals Noord, Oranjestad en de kinderparade in San Nicolas.
De grote parade in San Nicolas begint om middernacht al met ‘Jouvert
Morning’, een eigenzinnige mengeling van een pyjamaparty en een jump-up,
die duurt tot zonsopgang. De grote parade gaat rond 12 uur ‘s middags van
start. De sfeer langs de route wordt door ervaren carnavalliefhebbers en
deelnemers omschreven als de beste op het eiland.
De grote carnavalsparade in Oranjestad vindt de volgende dag plaats,
op zondag 7 februari 2016. Je kan er dus een bijzonder lang en feestelijk
weekend van maken! Dit is de grootste en langste van alle parades, met
de meeste toeschouwers en deelnemers. De parade start rond 11 uur ‘s
ochtends en het is aan te raden al vroeg je plekje langs de route te zoeken
aangezien het naarmate de dag vordert bijna te druk is in de stad om nog
door de mensenmassa’s en afgesloten straten te laveren.

The big carnival parade in Oranjestad is the ‘Grande Finale’ of the carnival season (7 February 2016), and the biggest of
all carnival parades on Aruba. The participants as well as the audience turn Oranjestad upside down. The best places to see
the parade are at the L.G. Smith Boulevard and the Vondellaan. Under a blazing sun, the participants dress up in beautiful
feather headdresses and glittering carnival consumes.
The mass of often hundreds of participants is preceded by some special,
individual showpieces and floats. The experience of the parading and
dancing carnival groups in a variety of colours is one you have to see
with your own eyes. There are many trailers and stands in all weights
and sizes along the route of the parade. As a visitor of the carnival, you
won’t get a chance to get bored. There is a friendly atmosphere and
enough fun to be had for everyone.
The carnival on Aruba also means powerful carnival music. Dozens of
bands drive around on big trucks with portable music installations. The
carnival song, or ‘road march’, with the best catchy lyrics and melody is
played the whole season.When it’s time for the big finale of the carnival
season with the big parade on carnival Sunday, everybody knows this

The big carnival parade in Oranjestad takes place the next day, on
Sunday the 7th of February 2016. You could enjoy a very long and
incredibly festive weekend! This is the longest and biggest parade, with
the highest numbers of participants and spectators. The parade starts
around 11.00 in the morning, and it is advised to take you place along
the route early on, because it will only get more crowded during the day.
In the end it will be too busy to use the streets due to crowds and road
blocks.
The last parade, where King Momito will be burned, traditionally takes

Saamaka Marron Museum
In het dorp Pikin Slee aan de Boven-Surinamerivier staat het
hartveroverende Saamaka Marronmuseum. Dit museum is
gewijd aan het cultureel erfgoed van de Marrons, die zich
wisten te ontworstelen aan de slavernij op de plantages aan
de kustvlaktes, en diep in het Surinaams regenwoud eigen
leefgemeenschappen vestigden. De oude Saramaccaanse
cultuur bloeit nog steeds, ook in onze tijd. Hier, op deze
bijzondere plek, komt het verleden tot leven en krijgt de
toekomst de ruimte.
De museumcollectie van Saamaka geeft een goed beeld
van de leefwereld van een gemeenschap vol eeuwenoude
tradities, rituelen en gebruiken die tot op vandaag in Suriname
springlevend zijn. Cultuur en natuur gaan hand in hand: nabij
het museum is een beeldentuin opgericht en een botanische
tuin.

De collectie van het museum neemt de bezoeker mee door de
leefwereld van man, vrouw en kind van de Marrongemeenschap. Er is
ruime aandacht voor religie en rituelen en voor de unieke Saramaccaanse
bestuurscultuur. Rondom deze thema’s is een prachtige collectie fotoen beeldmateriaal te zien. Tijdens de persoonlijke rondleiding hoort
u het verhaal van de Marroncultuur en krijgt u een toelichting op de
traditionele gebruiksvoorwerpen. Een wereld gaat voor u open.
Beeldentuin
Buiten het museum is een beeldentuin opgericht met kunstwerken uit
het culturele erfgoed en met hedendaagse kunstwerken van Totomboti,
Roberto Tjon A Meeuw en Christel van Hoeckel. Ook kunt u een
boswandeling maken in de botanische tuin van het museum.
Op het schaduwrijke museumterras kunt u heerlijk en ontspannen
lunchen en/of genieten van een vers lokaal sapje. Naast de traditionele
gerechten uit de Saramaccaanse keuken, staat op het menu Ital-food, het
natuurlijke dieet van de Rastafari.

In de galerie kunt u de houtsnijwerken bewonderen van deTotomboti en
andere Marronkunstenaars. De museumwinkel biedt fraaie, betaalbare
en nuttige Saramaccaanse kunstnijverheidsproducten die natuurlijk
door de dorpsbewoners zelf zijn gemaakt. Elk voorwerp is handgemaakt,
uniek en daarom veel meer dan een souvenir.
De rivier is de belangrijkste ader in het leven van de Saramaccaners.
Het vervoer loopt grotendeels via de rivier: per boot ga je naar de
andere dorpen en richting Paramaribo. De rivier is de plek waar men
zich wast en de was doet, en het is de plek waar het grootste gedeelte
van het sociale leven zich afspeelt. Het is altijd een gezellige boel aan de
rivier. Iedereen is er bezig, mensen komen en gaan en er wordt van alles
besproken.
Pikin Slee is één van de grootste dorpen aan de Boven-Surinamerivier.
Het is prachtig gelegen en heeft zijn authentieke karakter goed bewaard.
In en rond het dorp zijn diverse prima overnachtingsmoglijkheden
voor een verblijf van enkele dagen of langer. Daarmee is Pikin Slee een
veelzijdige toeristische bestemming.
Pikin Slee is bereikbaar via land, rivier en door de lucht. U kunt natuurlijk

Je kunt het museum ondersteunen door lid te worden van de Tyangaa.
Dit is de Saramaccaanse naam voor vriendenkring. Het museum is jong
en wordt enthousiast gerund door mensen uit het dorp. De eerste
jaren is echter nog veel support nodig. De Tyangaa wil deze support
organiseren door de inzet van vrienden. Er zijn diverse werkgroepen
waar je, als je dat wilt, een bijdrage kunt leveren aan het maken van
projectvoorstellen, organiseren van fundraising voor het museum, PR
en communicatie, de ontwikkeling van het museum, of het opzetten van
een webshop voor de winkel. Leden die liever niet actief willen worden
in een werkgroep zijn ook van harte welkom!
De contributie is €25 per jaar, maar je mag vanzelfsprekend meer geven.

Saamaka Marron Museum
In the village Pikin Slee on the Upper Suriname River, you’ll
find the charming Saamaka Marron Museum. This museum,
dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Maroons, who
managed to escape slavery on the plantations at the coastal
plains, establishing their own communities deep within the
Surinamese rainforest. The old Saramaccan culture is still

The museum collection takes the visitor on a journey through the
social environment of men, women and children of the Maroon
community. There is ample focus on religion and rituals, as well as the
unique Saramaccan administrative culture. A beautiful collection of
photos and footage is on display regarding these themes. During the
personal tour, you’ll hear the story of the Maroon culture, and will be
given an explanation of the traditional utensils. A whole new world will
open up to you.
In the gallery, you can admire the woodcuttings made by the Totomboti
and other Maroon artists. The museum shop offers lovely, inexpensive
and useful Saramaccan crafts products, which were made by the
villagers themselves, of course, and not “Made in China”. Every item is
handmade, unique, and thus much more than just a souvenir.
The river is the main aorta in the life of the Saramaccans. Transport
mainly takes place through the river, and you can visit the other villages
and Paramaribo by boat. The river is where people wash themselves
and do their laundry, and it’s where most of the social life takes place.
There’s always a great atmosphere at the river. Everyone is busy,
people come and go, and all sorts of things are being talked about.
Pikin Slee is one of the biggest villages on the Upper Suriname River.
It’s beautifully located, and its authentic character has been preserved
well. In and around the village, you’ll find great lodging possibilities
to stay a few days or longer. That makes Pikin Slee a versatile tourist
destination.

Tyangaa. This is the Saramaccan name for a circle of friends. It’s a
new museum, enthusiastically run by people from the village. During
the first years, however, a lot of support is needed. The Tyangaa
looks to organize this support by mobilizing friends. There are
various workgroups where, if you want to, you can contribute to
making project proposals, organizing fundraising for the museum,
PR and communication, the museum’s development, or setting up a
web shop for the store. Members who don’t want to become active
in a workgroup are also very welcome!

Moksi Aleysi. Er zijn wel 18 verschillende soorten. Iedereen maakt eigenlijk
zijn eigen variant met wat hij/zij persoonlijk lekker vindt. Een bezoek aan
Suriname is niet compleet tenzij u dit heerlijke gerecht heeft gegeten.

Ingrediënten:

* 200 gram Black Eye Pesi
* 200 gram kipfilet
* 200 gram zoutvlees
* 1 warme vis
* 400 ml kokosmelk
* 500 grams of rice
* 200 grams black-eyed peas
* 200 grams chicken breast
* 200 grams salted meat
* 1 smoked fish
* 400 ml coconut milk
* 4 tablespoons oil
* 4 eetlepels olie
* 1 ui fijngesneden
* 1 tomaat
* 1 eetlepel Smaakmaker of 2 Maggi blokken
* Zout
* Peper
* 1 onion, finely cut
* 1 tomato
* 1 tablespoon of seasoning
or 2 Maggi cubes
* Salt
* Pepper
De bereiding:
De black eye pesi wassen en in ongeveer 40 min. gaar koken. Het
zoutvlees wassen, ontzouten en in stukjes snijden. Kipfilet wassen en in
stukjes snijden. Ontvel de warme vis, haal de kop eraf, de graten er uit
en verdeel het in stukken. De uien fruiten in verhitte olie en vervolgens
de kipfilet goudbruin bakken, zoutvlees en warme vis toevoegen en goed
omscheppen, de gesneden tomaat erbij doen. Daarna de kokosmelk.Voeg
nu de gekookte black eye pesi met het vocht toe en laat het even opkoken.
Op smaak afmaken met peper, smaakmaker, of maggi blokken en eventueel
een snufje zout. De gewassen rijst erbij doen. Het geheel goed mengen, als
het vocht 1 vingerkootje boven de rijst staat, dan weet u dat er voldoende
water in zit. Laat de rijst met het deksel erop koken.Af en toe roeren zodat

het niet aanbrandt. Als het water opgedroogd is, het vuur dan op de
laagste stand zetten. Laat het nog ongeveer 15 minuten gaar koken.
Daarna even proeven of de rijst goed is gekookt.
Dan: smullen maar!
TIP: Serveer de Moksi Aleysi met gestoofde kip en bakbanaan.
Wash the black eye peas and cook for about 40 minutes. Wash
the salted meat, desalt and cut into pieces. Wash the chicken
breast and cut into pieces. Skin the smoked fish, remove its
head, remove the bones and cut it up. Fry the onions in hot
oil, the chicken breast until golden brown, add the salted meat
and warm fish, stir well and add the cut tomato. Then add the
coconut milk. Now add the cooked black eye peas with the
liquid, and let it cook for a while. Add pepper, seasoning or Maggi
to taste, and a bit of salt if you like. Add the washed rice. Mix
everything well, and if the liquid is 1 finger bone above the rice,
you know there’s enough water in it. Let the rice cook with the lid
on it. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. When the water is dried
up, turn the fire down to the lowest setting. Let it finish cooking
for about 15 minutes. Then taste if the rice has been cooked well.
Then: enjoy!

Maar ook deze dorpen gaan mee met de tijd. Kajana heeft een school
en een polikliniek en ook in Ligolio staat een school. De hoofdkapitein
van Langu woont in Stonhuku en het gebied telt verder nog meerdere
regionale bestuurders als kapiteins en basja’s.Veel Saramaccaners, vooral jonge mannen, werken tegenwoordig in Paramaribo, in Frans-Guyana
of bij de goudzoekers. Als ze hun dorp weer bezoeken brengen ze
gebruiksgoederen uit de stad mee.
Deze historische feiten maken Awarradam een ideale plek om te bezoeken, niet alleen voor natuurliefhebbers, maar ook voor degenen die
meer willen weten over de West-Afrikaanse cultuur zoals het is gebleven in Suriname. Een onvergetelijke ervaring tijdens deze tour is een

De individuele lodges op Awarradam zijn in traditionele stijl gebouwd met een balkon voor een prachtig uitzicht op de rivier. De
bouwmaterialen komen grotendeels uit de omgeving, voor uw
complete jungle-ervaring. Elke lodge heeft twee bedden met klamboe, een eigen toilet en douche met “koud” stromend water. De
“privé” hangmatten op het balkon worden voor de meesten heel
snel het favoriete plekje. Voor de sfeervolle verlichting wordt gebruik gemaakt van zonne-energie. In de traditionele eetzaal naast
de gezellige jungle bar-lounge worden alle maaltijden geserveerd.
Activiteiten en excursies
Tot het vaste programma horen onder meer boswandelingen, met
uitleg over het lokale gebruik (bouwmaterialen, medicijnen) van
verschillende planten, wandelingen door verschillende dorpen met
presentaties van lokale zang en dans. De dorpsbewoners zullen
handgemaakte souvenirs demonstreren en verkopen. Van de gids

Awarradam Jungle Lodge & Spa was built by a number of local
villagers. This small idyllic island, hidden away in the Amazon

in Suriname. The Maroons are descendants of slaves who fled
the plantations, and succeeded in establishing living communities in the Amazon rainforest. The locals pronounce the name as
“Awaadan”. Awaa (Awara) is an orange, edible palm tree fruit,
and “dan” means rapids.

they visit their village again, they bring back utensils from the city.

materials were mostly locally sourced, for a true jungle experience.
Every lodge has two beds with a mosquito net, an own toilet, and
shower with “cold” running water. The “private” hammocks on the
balcony quickly become many people’s favourite spot. For the atmospheric lighting, solar energy is used. In the traditional dining
hall next to the cosy jungle bar lounge, all the meals are served.
Activities and excursions
The regular programme includes walks in the forest, with an explanation about the local use (building materials, medication) of
various plants, and walks through various villages, with presentations of local song and dance. The villagers will demonstrate and
sell hand-made souvenirs. The guide will give you more detailed
information about the programme. If you prefer going out alone
for a walk, to watch birds, go fishing, paddle or go along to the agricultural plots, the guide can arrange that for you. If an additional

NATIONALE KUNSTBEURS SURINAME
De grootste trekpleister voor kunstliefhebbers in Suriname is de Nationale Kunstbeurs (NK). Het evenement
is niet meer weg te denken uit de Surinaamse kunstwereld. Het vormt al jaren een platform voor bestaande en
nieuwe kunstenaars om hun werk te exposeren. De expositie herdenkt dit jaar haar 50-jarig bestaan.
Suriname prijst zich gelukkig met beeldende kunstenaars die sinds jaren op een internationaal hoog niveau kunst maken. De Surinaamse
beeldende kunst mag tot het hoogste niveau van de Americas worden
gerekend. Dit blijkt uit de prijzen die de kunstenaars in het buitenland
winnen en de internationale erkenning die verschillende generaties
kunstenaars hebben gekregen. In het Caribisch gebied, maar zelfs ook
wereldwijd. Om er enkele te noemen: Erwin de Vries, Paul Woei, Soeki
Irodikromo en Hans Lie van de oudere generatie.Verder maken Kitling
Tjon Pian Gi, George Struikelblok, Rinaldo Klas, Sri Irodikromo, Marcel
Pinas en Jhunry Udenhout van de huidige generatie veel furore in de
kunstwereld. In de Surinaamse kunst is uiteraard veel van de achtergrond terug te vinden van de vele culturen die Suriname rijk is. Daarnaast is er ook duidelijk beïnvloeding over en weer te zien in de verschillende vormen, een proces dat speciale kunst oplevert en nog zeker
niet ten einde is.
De Nationale Kunstbeurs werd op initiatief van de heer Richard (Dick)
de Keyzer voor het eerst gehouden op 12 november 1965. De eerste
beurs was een openlucht expositie en werd georganiseerd door een
comité van kunstliefhebbers uit de particuliere sector, het bedrijfsleven
en de overheid en vond plaats in de Palmentuin. Hierna was het complex van ‘Ons Erf’ de thuisbasis van het evenement en wel tot en met
2013 toen het aan derden werd verhuurd. De NK heeft ook een internationaal karakter. Kunstenaars uit de regio zijn ook in de gelegenheid
mee te doen aan de jaarlijkse expositie en daar wordt met regelmaat
gebruik van gemaakt.
De stichting Nationale Kunstbeurs heeft het beheer over de NK en de
organisatie daarvan. De stichting heeft als doelstellingen het stimuleren
van de beeldende kunst in Suriname, de kennis en belangstelling van de
jeugd voor beeldende kunst en het ondersteunen van de beeldende
kunstenaars. Ook de interesse van de schoolgaande jeugd voor de
kunst, en het presenteren van recente werken aan een zo breed mogelijk publiek, vindt de organisatie belangrijk.
De NK heeft zich vanaf 1988 met de medewerking van de Rotary
steeds mogen verheugen in een goede ondersteuning door het Surinaams bedrijfsleven. De Surinaamsche Bank NV is al enige jaren de
Platinum sponsor en de slogan die zij voordragen: “Wij dragen kunst
een warm hart toe” is dan ook volledig terecht.
De NK is een verkooptentoonstelling. Hierdoor werd in de loop der
jaren de belangstelling van particulieren en bedrijven gestimuleerd om
in Suriname geproduceerde Beeldende Kunst aan te kopen en werd op
deze wijze een markt gevormd voor professionele kunstenaars.
Surinaamse kunst is vooral mooi en bijzonder en een bezoek aan de
beurs die in 2015 van donderdag 29 oktober tot en met zaterdag 7 november wordt gehouden, is daarom een must. U zult uw hart ophalen
en heeft de kans om een prachtig Surinaams werk tegen goede prijzen
aan te schaffen!

The Surinamese are very proud of the visual artists born on Surinamese soil conquering the world of art internationally. The notable awards and distinguished honors bestowed upon its artist
are proof of the fact that Surinamese artists and their work are
ranked among the best of the Americas and all around the world.
Erwin De Vries, Paul Woei, Soeki Irodirokomo en Hans Lie are part
of the group of pioneers of Surinamese art while Kitling Tjon Pjan
Gi, George Struikelblok, Rinaldo Klas, Sri Irodikromo, Marcel Pinas en
Jhunry Udenhout are making waves in the contemporary art scene.
Surinamese Art is usually inspired by the rich and diverse culture
that’s key to the beauty and fabric of this country. Suriname artists
and its art get inspired by each other, the country and its people.
This inspiration is an ongoing process that has yet to see its end.
The National Art Fair was initiated by Richard (Dick) de Keyzer and
was first held on November 12th of 1965. It came to life through
collaboration between the government, local businesses, private initiatives and many lovers of art and was held in the ‘Palm Garden’
rubbing shoulders with the presidential palace. Very shortly after the
first Fair ‘Ons Erf ’ a national art gallery became the Fair’s new home
until 2013. It is very common for artists from the region to participate which gives the Fair the international character it deserves.
The Foundation for the National Art Fair is responsible for the an-
nual continuity. The Foundations objectives are to support the Art
community nationally and inspire the next generation of artists to
take their place among the great ones Suriname has known so far.
Young artists are the primary ingredient for the future that’s why the
foundation targets youngsters in school as well as many other parts
of society to expose as many people as possible to the potential
power of art.
The Rotary has expressed their support for the National Art Fair in
many ways, which resulted in the excellent support of local businesses. De Surinaamsche Bank, one of the largest banks of Suriname,
has been a Platinum (highest order) benefactor for years which is
expressed in their message “A warm heart for art.”
An exceptional amount of art is purchased at the fair every year.
This triggered the curiosity of many businesses which in turn resulted in a very successful business platform for visual art in its many
forms in Suriname and kick started many professional careers.

Met anderhalf miljoen inwoners behoort Belém tot de vijftien grootste
steden van het sterk geürbaniseerde Brazilië. Dankzij de strategische
ligging in de monding van de Amazonerivier is het uitgegroeid tot een
echte handelsstad. Aan het begin van de 19e eeuw floreerde de haven,
na de ontdekking van de rubberbomen, met het natuurlijke rubber als
belangrijkste exportproduct.Tegenwoordig passeren er vooral schepen
met hout, aluminium en ijzer.
Vanuit de stad heb je toegang tot de vele eilanden in de rivier en reis je
makkelijk af naar de noordelijker gelegen zandstranden. Maar ook de
stad zelf heeft genoeg te bieden. Tegen de achtergrond van moderne
hoogbouw prijken diverse monumentale gebouwen die de toenmalige
rijkdom in herinnering brengen. Zowel de Portugese als Franse invloeden zijn in de architectuur nog goed zichtbaar. Een bezoek aan het koloniale fort, dat een mooi inkijkje geeft in de geschiedenis en uitzicht biedt
over de stad en de rivier, mag ook niet ontbreken. Een wandeling door
de stad brengt je tussen de vele mangobomen langs pleinen en parken
die vooral in het weekend opleven.
Ook nu nog is Belém een handelsstad. Zo blijkt ook tijdens een bezoek
aan de Ver-o-peso markt.Vroeger deed het terrein dienst als douanekantoor waar de binnengekomen handelswaar werd gewogen.Ver-opeso betekent “kijken wat het weegt”. Nog steeds worden hier dagelijks de verse producten als vis, lokale groenten en fruit via het water
aangeleverd en verder verhandeld. Je kijkt er je ogen uit.
Boek na een dagje stad ook één van de vele dagtripjes over de rivier.
Deze nemen je mee langs vele onbewoonde en idyllische eilanden. Heb
je iets meer tijd te besteden bezoek dan Ilha da Marajo, het groot-
ste riviereneiland ter wereld. Bijzonder is het afwisselende landschap
met tropisch regenwoud, savannes, weidegronden, waterrijk gebied,
stranden, palmen en mangrovebossen. Een must voor natuurliefhebbers.Wil je echt tot rust komen reis dan af naar Ilha da Algodoal. Dit
autovrije eiland, honderdzestig kilometer ten noorden van Belém, waar
paardenkarren het straatbeeld kleuren, is werkelijk een verademing. Je
vindt hier kilometerslange ongerepte zandstranden waarvan Praia da
Princesa, het prinsessenstrand, één van de bekendste is. Dit favoriete
toevluchtsoord voor vele Brazilianen werd eerder verkozen tot één
van de tien mooiste Braziliaanse stranden. Met een verse caipirinha in je
hand blijft er dan nog weinig te wensen over.
Ook als je de stad maar even kunt aandoen liggen de schatten van het
Amazonegebied binnen handbereik. Het Emilio Goeldi museum, dat
ruim vijf hectare bos midden in de stad bestrijkt, bestaat uit een botanische tuin, dierentuin en een onderzoekscentrum. Hier maak je kennis
met vele plantensoorten, dieren en (vruchten)bomen. Zo vind je er

Hoewel de straten van historisch Belém niet echt onderhouden worden gaat dit niet ten koste van de atmosfeer en energie van de stad.

With one and a half million inhabitants, Belém is in the top fifteen
largest cities of heavily urbanized Brazil. Thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of the Amazon river, it has developed into a true
trading city. At the beginning of the 19th century, the port flourished,
after rubber trees were discovered, with natural rubber being the most
important export product.These days, it’s mainly ships with wood, aluminium and iron that pass through.
From the city, you’ll have access to the many islands in the river, and
it’s easy to reach the sandy beaches up north. But the city itself also
has enough to offer. Against the background of modern high-rise buildings, you’ll see various monumental buildings that remind one of the
wealth of old. Both Portuguese and French influences are still clearly
visible in the architecture. A visit to the colonial fort, providing a good
overview of history and of the city and the river, is also a must. A walk
through town takes you through many mango trees, along squares
and parks that come alive in the weekend.
Even today, Belém is still a city of trade, which a visit to the Ver-o-peso
market will also show.The terrain used to function as a customs office,
where the merchandise that came in was weighed.Ver-o-peso means
“see what it weighs”. These days, fresh products like fish, local fruit
and vegetables are still brought in by water and sold on here. It’s a
feast for the eyes.

was previously named one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil.
With a fresh caipirinha in your hand, what more do you want?
Even if you’re only able to pay the city a brief visit, the treasures of
the Amazon are within reach. The Emilio Goeldi museum, covering
over five hectares of forest in the middle of the city, consists of a
botanic garden, zoo and research centre. Here, you’ll get acquainted
with many plant varieties, animals and (fruit) trees. You’ll encounter
monkeys, jaguars, alligators, snakes, rare birds, fish, turtles and other
plants and animals from the forests and rivers of the Amazon.
You can take a stroll along the five-hundred metre quay of the “Estacao das docas”. Three port warehouses here have been turned into
a modern entertainment centre, retaining the old steel constructions.
In addition to fashion, handcraft, music performances and exhibitions, you can also find various restaurants here. During your stay, get
acquainted with the typical Brazilian Amazon dishes as well. “Pato

Een kilometers lang strand in de achtertuin, dat is Scheveningen voor
Den Haag.Vier seizoenen per jaar een heerlijke plek om te vertoeven.
Met een glas wijn op een loungebank in de zon of juist met zeiljack vol
in de wind. Onveranderd, welk jaargetijde het ook is, blijft het effect

Ook bij slecht weer is het aan het strand goed toeven: de verschillende
