Sabaku...
Sabaku, zo heet dit inflight magazine van Surinam Airways. Je spreekt het uit als ‘sabbakoe’, met de klemtoon
op de laatste lettergreep. Sabaku is het Surinaamse
woord voor reiger. In Suriname leven achttien soorten
reigers, waarvan er vier ‘sabaku’ worden genoemd. Deze
kleine, sierlijke vogels zijn uitgerust met lange poten en
een lange, krachtige snavel. De verschillende soorten leven vaak met elkaar samen.
Bij zonsopkomst verlaten de sabaku’s collectief de gemeenschappelijke slaapverblijven in de mangrovebossen langs de
rivier. Een kolonie vliegende reigers biedt een indrukwekkende aanblik. Aan het eind van de dag keren de vogels opnieuw in groepen
terug naar hun onderkomens voor de nacht. Het wit van hun veren
steekt dan mooi af tegen het roze of purper van de avondhemel.
Sabaku’s zijn sociale vogels: ze slapen en broeden gemeenschappelijk. In Paramaribo vinden we een broedkolonie en slaapplaats
van sabaku’s langs de Surinamerivier aan de monding van de Van
Sommelsdijckskreek.
“Sabaku” is the name of Surinam Airways’ inflight magazine. It is pronounced “SA-BA-KOO” with the emphasis
on the last syllable. Sabaku is the Surinamese word for
the snowy egret (and some other
species of egrets). Snowy egrets are small, graceful, longlegged birds with a long, pointed, powerful bill.
At sunrise, the birds leave the communal roost and nesting
sites within a short period of time. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At
dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves.
The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with
the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky.
Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus
breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost
of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

Anno 2015 treedt Re-Play weer op in de originele bezetting
– dus met Mark Dakriet – en is succesvol bezig met een
comeback, hoewel de groep eigenlijk nooit is weggeweest. Op 18
december treedt Re-Play in Suriname op in de Anthony Nesty
Sporthal, een optreden dat ongetwijfeld zal uitlopen op een
enorme happening gezien de populariteit van deze 4-koppige
pop/soul band. De leden (Alwin Burke, Henk Waarde, Samuel
de Wit en Mark Dakriet) van Re-Play kijken nu al reikhalzend
uit naar hun optreden in Suriname. Voor Mark Dakriet wordt
het kennismaking met zijn geboorteland dat hij op zijn derde
jaar heeft verlaten. “Ik kijk er enorm naar uit om Suriname te
bezoeken”, vertelt Mark Dakriet.“De andere jongens zijn al een
paar keer naar Suriname geweest zowel op vakantie en om op
te treden en hebben er schitterende verhalen over.”

“Ik word er altijd mee gepest dat ik als geboren Surinamer nog
nooit na mijn vertrek als peuter voet op Surinaamse bodem
heb gezet en eigenlijk heel weinig van Suriname weet behalve

genieten van mijn verblijf en de sfeer opzuigen. Ook ben ik blij
dat ik met Re-Play onze fans kan ontmoeten want ik weet dat

De band Re-Play wordt in 1990 in Rotterdam opgericht
door Alwin Burke, Henk Waarde en Samuel de Wit. Drie
muzikale vrienden, die al eerder als ‘The Pasadenas’ met elkaar
deelnamen aan de Soundmixshow en zelfs twee Engelstalige
singles uitbrachten in Duitsland.

de TMF Awards in de categorie ‘Beste Nederlandse R&B-groep’ was bij voorbaat kansloos tegen de band uit
Rotterdam die bestond uit 4 sympathieke en goed uitziende jongens van Surinaamse afkomst. Nadat Mark
Dakriet in 2003 aankondigt te willen werken aan zijn solocarrière, richt Re-Play zich onder andere met een
verzamelalbum steeds meer op Suriname, waar het opnieuw successen kent.

Tijdens het luisteren naar de Spaanstalige versies van nummers
van Toni Braxton en Boyz II Men kwam de band op het idee om
ook in de eigen taal te gaan zingen. Dit werd door het publiek
met open armen ontvangen. Na de toetreding van Mark Dakriet
in 1995 was een Nederlandstalige R&B sensatie geboren.
In 1996 bracht Re-Play de eerste Nederlandstalige single ‘Ik
Denk Aan Jou’ uit, die twee jaar later werd opgevolgd door de
Top 40-hit ‘Kijk Om Je Heen’. Niet veel later dat jaar verscheen
van het debuutalbum ‘Re-Play’ ook de hitsingle Ala Day (Ik Leef
Alleen Voor Jou), waarmee de band een top 10-notering in de
belangrijkste hitlijst scoorde.
Nadat Mark Dakriet in 2003 aankondigt te willen werken aan
zijn solocarrière, richt Re-Play zich onder andere met een
verzamelalbum steeds meer op Suriname, waar het opnieuw
successen kent. In 2006 komt de band met een nieuw album,
‘Op Eigen Benen’, en start het een eigen theaterprogramma
waarin het bekende soul- en Motown-nummers ten gehore
brengt. ‘De Trip’ is een dusdanig succes, dat er in 2007 zelfs een
verzamelalbum met de naam ‘Dancing The Night Away’ verschijnt.
Op het album vinden we de beste nummers uit de succesvolle
voorstelling.

Het enthousiasme en de ambitie die de mannen van Re-Play nog
na ruim 20 jaar uitstralen is aanstekelijk en bewonderenswaardig.
Deze jongens leven voor de muziek en maken van elk optreden
nog een feest. De bewondering, het respect en waardering van
collega muzikanten in Nederland en Suriname is groot voor
de godfather(s) van de Nederlandstalige R&B die ook in het
Surinaams en Engels muzikaal prima uit de voeten kunnen.
De muzikaliteit en het vakmanschap van alle 4 de leden plaatsen
de groep op eenzame hoogte, en het knappe is dat de band zich
heeft weten te vernieuwen zonder dat de onmiskenbare Re-Play
sound geweld wordt aangedaan. Een nieuwe generatie fans dient
zich aan, en de ‘oude’ fans verwelkomen Re-Play 4.0 met open
armen.

In 2015, Re-Play once again performs in the original lineup – with Mark Dakriet – and is working on a successful
comeback, although the group was never really gone. On
December 18, Re-Play performs in Suriname in the Anthony
Nesty Sporthal, a performance that will no doubt be an
immense happening, judging by the popularity of this 4-man
pop/soul band. The Re-Play members (Alwin Burke, Henk
Waarde, Samuel de Wit and Mark Dakriet) are already very
much looking forward to their performance in Suriname. For
Mark Dakriet, it will be a renewed introduction to his native
country, which he left at the age of three. “I am very much
looking forward to visiting Suriname,” says Mark Dakriet.
“The other guys have been to Suriname a few times, both on
holiday and to perform, and they tell great stories about it.”
“They always tease me that, having been born in Suriname,
I never went back there after I left as a toddler, and I really
know very little about Suriname apart from the stories family
and friends have told me. I will enjoy every second of my stay,
taking in the atmosphere. I’m also happy that I can meet our
fans with the band, because I know Re-Play has many loyal
fans in Suriname.”

The band Re-Play was established in 1990 by Alwin Burke,
Henk Waarde and Samuel de Wit. Three musical friends, who
had already participated in a Dutch talent show as ‘The
Pasadenas’, and even released two English-language singles
in Germany.
Re-Play: makes comeback,
but was never really gone…
The band Re-Play had its heyday during the nineties, when they stormed the Dutch charts with their Dutch-language
R&B songs, and performed in sold-out venues. The competition for the TMF Awards in the category ‘Best Dutch R&B
Group’ didn’t stand a chance against the band from Rotterdam, consisting of 4 sympathetic and good-looking guys
of Surinamese origin. After Mark Dakriet announced in 2003 that he wanted to work on his solo career, Re-Play has
focused more and more on Suriname, where it has seen renewed success, for instance with a compilation album.

While listening to the Spanish version of songs by Toni
Braxton and Boyz II Men, the band got the idea to start
singing in their own language as well. This was a huge hit with
the audience.When Mark Dakriet joined the band in 1995, a
Dutch R&B sensation had been born.
In 1996, Re-Play released the first Dutch single, ‘Ik Denk Aan
Jou’ (‘I Think of You’), followed two years later by Top 40 hit
‘Kijk Om Je Heen’ (‘Look Around You’). Not much later that
year, the hit single ‘Ala Day - Ik Leef Alleen Voor Jou’ (‘I Only
Live for You’) from debut album ‘Re-Play’ was released, which
got the band a place in the top 10 of the most important
song chart.
After Mark Dakriet announced in 2003 that he wanted to
work on his solo career, Re-Play has focused more and more
on Suriname, where it has seen renewed success, for instance
with a compilation album. In 2006, the band releases a new
album, ‘Op Eigen Benen’ (‘On My Own’), and starts its own
theatre show, in which it plays well-known soul and Motown
songs. ‘De Trip’ is such a big success, that a compilation album
is released in 2007, with the title ‘Dancing The Night Away’,
with the best songs from the successful show.
In 2015, we see Re-Play return to the stage in its original lineup: Alwin, Henk, Sam & Mark. Together with Glennis Grace, the
band wins the hearts of the audience during ‘Ladies of Soul’,
showing it can still lay claim to the title ‘Best Dutch-language
Pop/Soul Group’.
The new single, Mona Lisa, premiered live during DJ Edwin
Evers’ show, and was received with open arms. It’s clear: RePlay’s comeback is a major success.
The enthusiasm and ambition still displayed by the men of
Re-Play after more than 20 years, is infectious and admirable.
These guys live for music, and turn every performance into a
party. The admiration, the respect and appreciation from fellow
musicians in the Netherlands and Suriname is great for the
godfather(s) of the Dutch-language R&B, who also do just fine
when making music in Surinamese and English.
The musicality and skill of all four members makes the band
unrivalled, and the great thing is that the band has been able
to keep evolving, without losing that unmistakable Re-Play
sound. A new generation of fans is emerging, and the ‘old’ fans
welcome Re-Play 4.0 with open arms.

Dit jaar is het 125 jaar geleden dat de eerste
contractarbeiders uit Java in Suriname voet aan wal
zetten. Stichting Comité Herdenking Javaanse Immigratie
(STICHJI) organiseert sinds 2000 jaarlijks een viering en
herdenking om stil te staan bij dit moment. Daarnaast zet
STICHJI zich in om de geschiedenis en het erfgoed van
Javaanse Surinamers levend te houden. Dat doet zij met
projecten die gericht zijn op het vastleggen van de wijze
waarop Javaanse Surinamers, in de context van migratie,
hun erfgoed beleven, vorm geven en uitdragen.

STICHJI presenteert de resultaten van haar projecten op of rondom
9 augustus, de dag waarop het begin van de Javaanse immigratie wordt
herdacht. Dit jaar gebeurt dat onder andere in de vorm van een boek
en een culturele manifestatie. Daarnaast coördineert STICHJI de
Werkgroep 125 Jaar Javaanse Immigratie. Deze werkgroep heeft het
idee van filmmaker Jeffrey Salimin om een documentaire te maken
omarmd. De film is bedoeld om de Surinaams Javaanse cultuur en zijn
ontwikkelingen bij een breed publiek onder de aandacht te brengen.
De Haagse documentairemaker Jeffrey Salimin is de afgelopen periode
intensief bezig geweest met deze film waarin hij vastlegt hoe het nazaten
van de Javaanse immigranten is vergaan (in Suriname en Nederland),
wat ze anno 2015 doen, wat hun maatschappelijke positie is en welke
culturele voetstappen ze hebben achtergelaten.Vanzelfsprekend reisde
Jeffrey Salimin ook af naar Suriname voor opnamen en research. Om de
film financieel mogelijk te maken is een crowdfundingstraject gestart.
Op de vraag waarom hij persé de geschiedenis van 125 jaar immigratie
op film wil vastleggen antwoordt Jeffrey Salimin:
“De Javanen zijn 125 jaar geleden vanuit Indonesië naar Suriname gegaan.
De ontwikkeling bij de Javanen van toen tot nu, is nooit vastgelegd
door de Javaanse gemeenschap. Deze is zich zelf vaak niet bewust van
bepaalde ontwikkelingen. Ik wel, en ik vind het zonde als deze verloren
zou gaan. Als je het vastlegt, kun je tien jaar later ook terugkijken hoe
de Javanen er in 2015 voorstonden. Dus die documentaire wordt een
soort meetpunt. Zo wil ik vanuit mijn vakgebied als filmmaker bijdragen
aan alle activiteiten die worden georganiseerd in het kader van 125 jaar
Javaanse immigratie.”
Jeffrey Salimin vervolgt:“Ik wil dat mensen nieuwsgierig worden van de
documentaire en vragen gaan stellen over hun cultuur en geschiedenis.
Hopelijk doen ze er dan ook wat mee. Als ze bijvoorbeeld een
poppenspeler zien die vertelt dat zijn kunst er over een aantal jaar
misschien niet meer is, hoop ik dat ze zich daar verder in gaan verdiepen
en misschien wel proberen om dit wel voort te laten bestaan. Dat er
in het heden en de toekomst wordt gekeken in plaats van steeds naar
het verleden. Uiteindelijk wil ik de kennis die ik heb opgedaan bij het
maken van de documentaire, overbrengen naar Suriname door mensen
daar te leren hoe ze filmproducties moeten maken,” aldus de JavaansSurinaamse filmmaker uit Nederland.
Javanen geven de indruk een bescheiden bevolkingsgroep te zijn. Ze
treden niet graag op de voorgrond en lossen hun eventuele problemen
zelf op. Zowel in Suriname als in Nederland startten de Javanen vaak
eigen ondernemingen: toko’s en warungs. De laatste decennia hebben
de Javanen in Suriname hun bescheidenheid van zich afgeschud en laten
zich steeds meer gelden op cultureel, economisch en politiek gebied.
Men is trots op hun geschiedenis en cultuur en wil dit ook uitdragen.
De documentaire besteedt niet alleen aandacht aan de 35.000 Javanen
die uiteindelijk in Nederland terecht zijn gekomen, maar ook aan
die in Suriname. De filmmaker wil in de film op zoek gaan naar wat
is overgebleven van het gevoel van lotsverbondenheid dat heel sterk
leefde onder de eerste generatie Javaanse immigranten in Suriname. Dit
zogeheten jajigevoel (‘jaji’ betekent letterlijk ‘scheepsgenoot’) kwam tot
uiting in veel aspecten van het dagelijks leven.
Eén van de personen die gevolgd wordt, is orthopedisch chirurg dr.
Steven Samijo. Zijn Paulus Kasim Samijo-stichting maakt het al vijf jaar
mogelijk om minder bedeelde patiënten in Suriname kosteloos te
opereren. De makers van de documentaire achtten het van belang hem
in de film op te nemen, omdat het enerzijds het beeld weergeeft van
die lotsverbondenheid, anderzijds omdat het laat zien dat Samijo een
succesvolle Javaanse Surinamer is, zoals er zovelen zijn.
STICHJI/Fonds 1818
Om de totstandkoming van de documentaire mogelijk te maken loopt
er een crowdfundingstraject. STICHJI (Stichting Comité Herdenking
Javaanse Immigratie) helpt Docu125 om aan de middelen te komen.
JAVANESE IMMIGRATION
Fonds1818 heeft ingestemd met het verzoek van STICHJI, het bedrag
dat uit crowdfundingsactiviteiten wordt ontvangen te verdubbelen (tot
max. € 5000). Hiermee zijn de productiekosten echter nog niet gedekt.
Alle steun is daarom nog welkom!
STICHJI is aangewezen om alle initiatieven rond de herdenking in
Nederland te coördineren en neemt de verantwoordelijkheid om
de financiën te beheren, de voortgang daarvan te monitoren en de
filmmakers te ondersteunen met advies en begeleiding. STICHJI zal
de documentaire delen met partners in Suriname en Indonesië in het
kader van uitwisseling van gedeeld erfgoed.
De première van de documentaire staat gepland in het voorjaar van
2016, zowel in Nederland als in Suriname.

Warungboek
Begin 2013 is STICHJI gestart met het spoorzoekersproject
Javanen in de (Nederlandse) Polder. Wat zijn de sporen
van vestiging van Javaanse Surinamers in Nederland, en
welke verhalen gaan achter deze sporen schuil? Deze
vraag staat centraal dit meerjarenproject. Samen met
vrijwilligers documenteert STICHJI tastbaar erfgoed via foto’s
gecombineerd met persoonlijke verhalen. Binnen dit project
bleek culinair ondernemerschap een
belangrijk thema. LM Publishers en STICHJI
besloten dit thema extra te belichten in dit
herdenkingsjaar. Het boek Saoto, berkat
en dawet: een kijkje in de keuken van
Javaans-Surinaamse warungs, is daarvan het
resultaat.
De verhalen achter de toko’s, afhaal- en
eetgelegenheden,meestal aangeduid als‘warung’,staan centraal
in het boek. Diverse warungs werkten mee, onder andere
Warung Mini XL in Den Haag, Javaans eethuis Surimaribo in
Delfzijl,Warung Subur inArnhem enToko Sodiro in Rotterdam.
De samenstellers Hariëtte Mingoen en Lisa Djasmadi geven
een inkijk in het culinair ondernemerschap van Javaanse
Surinamers, evenals de bijdrage van de warungs en toko’s aan
het behoud van cultureel erfgoed. De verhalen worden rijk
geïllustreerd met foto’s en portretten van fotograaf Matte
Soemopawiro.
Op 9 augustus komt het boek uit. Dan is het precies 125 jaar
geleden dat de eerste Javaanse contractarbeiders in Suriname
aankwamen. Deze herdenking heeft dit jaar een bijzonder
karakter omdat het samenvalt met 40 jaar vestiging van
(Javaanse) Surinamers in Nederland.

STICHJI presents the results of its projects on or around August 9, the day on
which the start of the Javanese immigration is remembered.This year, there
will be a book and a cultural manifestation. STICHJI also coordinates the
Workgroup 125 Years Javanese Immigration.This workgroup has embraced
film maker Jeffrey Salimin’s idea to make a documentary.The film is intended
to draw the attention of a large audience to the Surinamese Javanese culture
and its developments.
Documentary film maker Jeffrey Salimin from The Hague has been working
hard on this film recently, in which he records how descendants of the Javanese
immigrants have fared (in Suriname and the Netherlands), what they do now,
what their position in society is, and the cultural footprints they’ve left behind.
Naturally, Jeffrey Salimin also travelled to Suriname for recording and research.
To make the film possible financially, a crowdfunding campaign has been
started.
JAVANESE IMMIGRATION
Asked why he was determined to record the history of 125 years of immigration
on film, Jeffrey Salimin says:
“The Javanese people left Indonesia for Suriname 125 years ago. How the
Javanese developed between then and now, has never been recorded by
the Javanese community. They often aren’t aware of certain developments
themselves. I am, and I think it’s a shame if they would be lost. If you document
it, you can look back on how the Javanese were doing in 2015 a decade from
now as well. So that documentary becomes a sort of benchmark.That way,
as a professional film maker, I want to contribute to all the activities that are
organized in the context of 125 years Javanese immigration.”
Fonds 1818 has agreed to STICHJI’s request, to double the amount received
from the crowdfunding activities (to a maximum of 5000 euros).This doesn’t
cover the production costs, however, so any support is still welcome!
STICHJI has been appointed to coordinate all the initiatives surrounding the
commemoration in the Netherlands, and takes the responsibility of managing
the finances, monitoring the progress and supporting the film makers with
advice and guidance. STICHJI will share the documentary with partners in
Suriname and Indonesia, as part of an exchange of shared heritage.
The documentary is planned to premiere in the spring of 2016, both in the
Netherlands and in Suriname.
Jeffrey Salimin continues:“I want people to become curious after watching the
documentary, so they’ll start asking questions about their culture and history.
Hopefully they will do something with it. For instance, if they see a puppeteer
who says his art may not exist anymore in a few years, I hope they will look
into that more, and perhaps find a way to ensure its continued existence.
So that people will look at the present and the future, rather than the past.
Ultimately, I want to convey the knowledge I’ve gathered during the making
of the documentary, to Suriname, to teach people there how to make film
productions,” says the Javanese Surinamese film maker from the Netherlands.
Javanese people give the impression of being a humble population group.
They don’t like being in the spotlight, and solve any problems they might have
themselves. Both in Suriname and in the Netherlands, the Javanese often start
their own businesses: tokos and warungs. In recent decades, the Javanese in
Suriname have rid themselves of their humility, and are asserting themselves
more and more in terms of culture, economy and politics.They are proud of
their history and culture, and want to propagate this.
The documentary doesn’t just focus on the 35,000 Javanese who eventually
ended up in the Netherlands, but also on those in Suriname. In the film, the
film maker wants to look for what’s left of the feeling of solidarity that was
very strong among the first generation of Javanese immigrants in Suriname.
This so-called jaji feeling (‘jaji’ literally means ‘shipmate’) was expressed in many
aspects of everyday life.

One of the people featured in the film is orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Steven
Samijo. His Paulus Kasim Samijo foundation has, for the last five years, made
it possible for less well-off patients in Suriname to undergo free surgery. The
makers of the documentary deemed it important to include him in the film,
because on the one hand it shows that solidarity, and on the other hand it
shows that Samijo is a successful Javanese Surinamese individual, one of many.
STICHJI/Fonds 1818
In order to make the realization of the documentary possible, a crowdfunding
campaign has been started. STICHJI (the Foundation Committee
Commemoration Javanese Immigration) helps Docu125 obtain the necessary
funds.
Warung book
In early 2013, STICHJI started the pathfinder project Javanese in
the (Dutch) Polder. What traces have the Javanese Surinamese
left behind who settled in the Netherlands, and what stories are
behind these traces? That is the central question in this multi-year
project. Working with volunteers, STICHJI documents tangible
heritage through photos, combined with personal stories.Within this
project, culinary entrepreneurship turned out to be an important
theme. LM Publishers and STICHJI decided
to put this theme in the spotlight during this
commemorative year, resulting in the book
Saoto, berkat and dawet: a look into the kitchen
of Javanese Surinamese warungs.
The stories behind the tokos, takeaways and
restaurants, usually called ‘warung’, take centre
stage in the book.Various warungs participated,
including Warung Mini XL in The Hague, Javanese restaurant
Surimaribo in Delfzijl,Warung Subur in Arnhem and Toko Sodiro in
Rotterdam.
The makers, Hariëtte Mingoen and Lisa Djasmadi, give an
impression of the culinary entrepreneurship of Javanese Surinamese
people, as well as of the contribution of the warungs and tokos to the
preservation of cultural heritage.The stories are richly illustrated with
photos and portraits by photographer Matte Soemopawiro.
On August 9, the book will be released, exactly 125 years after
the first Javanese indentured labourers arrived in Suriname. This
commemoration has a special character this year, because it
coincides with 40 years of (Javanese) Surinamese people settling
in the Netherlands.

Aan te raden is dan ook om hiervoor meerdere dagen te reserveren (3

Universal Studios Florida & Universal’s Islands of Adventure of de MGM
studio’s zijn zeer de moeite waard om te bezoeken als u in Orlando bent.
Op deze film themaparken treft u vele attracties aan. U zult versteld staan
van de vele immense filmdecors die nog regelmatig gebruikt worden. Het
kan zelfs zomaar voorkomen dat u getuige bent van een opname voor
een werkelijke film of serie!
Hebt u minder met film dan kunt u ook besluiten een bezoek te brengen
aan SeaWorld met haar indrukwekkende orkashows, dolfijnenshows en
de hilarische show van de zeeleeuwen Clyde en Seamore. Daarnaast zult
u nog vele andere waterdieren en attracties aantreffen in dit prachtige
attractiepark. Naast al deze attractieparken beschikt de Orlando regio
ook over een aantal prachtige shoppingmalls, zoals de gigantische Florida
Mall, het zeer luxe Mall at Millenia en een aantal Outlet Shopping Malls.
Omdat winkels tot laat en sommige wel 24 uur open zijn, kunt u bijna op
elk moment besluiten om eens lekker te gaan shoppen!

Het futuristische Kennedy Space Center van waaruit NASA haar
ruimtereizen lanceert is ook een bezoek waard. Per touringcar krijgt u
een rondleiding langs diverse indrukwekkende lokaties op dit terrein.
Opvallend is de gigantische hangaar van de Space Shuttle. Hierop staat de
Amerikaanse vlag afgebeeld die klein lijkt, maar een oppervlakte heeft van
een voetbalveld.
De tour leidt u langs het Apollo/Saturn Center waar u de legendarische
Saturn raket, de Lunar Module en de Service Module uit het
maanprogramma van weleer kunt bekijken. In het Firing Room Theater
beleeft u de lancering van de Apollo 8 alsof het vandaag plaatsvindt. In het
International Space Center kunt u zien hoe NASA werkt aan toekomstige
ruimtereizen. U kunt hier ook een indrukwekkende IMAX film over de
geheimen van het heelal gaan bekijken.
In de verte ziet u het lanceerplatform staan van waaruit alle ruimtereizen
begonnen en nog altijd beginnen. Het is mogelijk om een additionele
tour te boeken, de NASA Up-Close Tour, die u zo dicht mogelijk bij dit
immense platform brengt. Na uw bezoek aan het Kennedy Space Center
is een bezoekje aan het nabijgelegen Cocoa Beach zeker een aanrader.
Hier kunt even lekker uitwaaien op één van de prachtige stranden. In dit
paradijs voor surfers kunt u heerlijk een hapje eten op Cocoa Beach Pier
of genieten van een lekker koel drankje op het terras van één van de vele
bars met vanzelfsprekend een adembenemend uitzicht op de ruwe zee!
Hierna rijdt u terug naar Orlando.‘s Avonds is een bezoek aan de Arabian
Nights Dinner Show eigenlijk een ‘must’! In een mystieke arena wordt u
een onvergetelijke show gepresenteerd met dans en acrobatiek te paard
van ongekend niveau!
Naast de vele attractieparken en winkelcentra kunt u in deze regio ook
genieten van adembenemende natuur! Op ongeveer anderhalf uur rijden
van Orlando ligt het dichtbeboste Ocala National Forest waar u een
heerlijke, rustgevende wandeling kunt maken.
In dit prachtige gebied zijn ook een aantal prachtige meren waarop u
kanoën of waarin u kunt snorkelen om de prachtige onderwaterwereld
van vissen en wuivende onderwatervegetatie te ontdekken. Een andere
natuurbestemming is Wekiwa Springs State Park.
Dit natuurgebied is gelegen aan de bovenloop van de Wekiva River. In
dit park is ruim 20 kilometer aan wandelroutes voor u uitgezet met op
diverse plaatsen geweldige vergezichten! Dit gebied geeft u meteen een
goede indruk van hoe Florida er in de tijd van de Timucuan Indianen moet
hebben uitgezien. Vanzelfsprekend kunt u ook hier heerlijk op en in het
water recreëren! Bent u meer iemand van actie en adrenaline? Rij dan
vandaag binnen dezelfde reisduur naar het wereldberoemde Daytona
Beach met haar Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR Headquarters
en uitgebreide stukken strand waar u overheen mag crossen! U kunt ook
besluiten hier te gaan parasailen of te gaan karten. Kortom: in Daytona
Beach is volop vertier!

Popular holiday destination Orlando in Florida is Surinam Airways’
brand new destination. In the Orlando region, you’ll find many
amusement parks, but you can also enjoy the beautiful nature
there. Many visitors return to this destination regularly, because
Orlando is a city that never gets boring.
The biggest Disney park in the world is still in Orlando: Disney World.
Compared to Disneyland in California, this amusement park is several
times larger. To give you an idea: the whole of Disneyland could fit on
Disney World’s parking lot! Disney World actually comprises 4 theme
parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and
Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There are also two big water fun parks to
choose from, as well as entertainment sections, like Down Town Disney
and Disney’s Boardwalk. If you really want to extensively visit all the
Disney theme parks, it’s impossible to do so within one day. So it would

when travelling with children!
Universal Studios Florida & Universal’s Islands of Adventure, or the
MGM studios, are definitely worth a visit if you’re in Orlando. In these
movie theme parks, you’ll find many attractions.You will be amazed at
the many immense film sets that still see regular use. You could even
witness an actual film or series being recorded!
If you’re not a big film fan, you can also visit SeaWorld with its
impressive orca shows, dolphin shows and the hilarious show with sea
lions Clyde and Seamore. You’ll also find many other marine animals
and attractions in this beautiful amusement park. In addition to all
these amusement parks, the Orlando region also boasts a number
of beautiful shopping malls, like the enormous Florida Mall, the very
luxurious Mall at Millenia and a number of outlet shopping malls.
Because stores have ample opening times, sometimes up to 24 hours,
you can decide to go shopping at nearly every moment during the day!

The futuristic Kennedy Space Center, from where NASA launches its
space travels, is also worth a visit.You can go on a bus tour along various
impressive locations on the grounds. The gigantic Space Shuttle hangar
is particularly striking. It has an American flag on it that seems small, but
is actually the size of a football pitch.
The tour leads you through the Apollo/Saturn Center, where you can
see the legendary Saturn rocket, the Lunar Module and the Service
Module from the old lunar programme. In the Firing Room Theater,
you can experience the Apollo 8 launch as if it’s happening live. In the
International Space Center, you can see how NASA works on future
space travels. You can also view an impressive IMAX film about the
secrets of the universe here.
From afar, you’ll see the launch pad, where all space travel, past and
present, begins. It’s possible to book an additional tour, the NASA UpClose Tour, which takes you as close as possible to this immense platform.
After your visit to the Kennedy Space Center, a visit to nearby Cocoa
Beach is highly recommended. Here, you can get a breath of fresh air
on one of the beautiful beaches. In this surfers’ paradise, you can grab
a delicious meal on Cocoa Beach Pier, or enjoy a nice cool drink on the
terrace of one of the many bars, of course with a fabulous view of the
rough sea! Afterwards, you’ll drive back to Orlando. At night, a visit to the
Arabian Nights Dinner Show is really a must! In a mystical arena, you’ll
be presented with an unforgettable show, with dancing and acrobatics
on horseback taken to new heights!
In addition to the many amusement parks and shopping malls, you
can also enjoy the breath-taking nature in this area! At about a 1.5
hour drive from Orlando, you’ll find the densely wooded Ocala National
Forest, where you can take a lovely, relaxing walk.
In this beautiful area, you’ll also find a number of beautiful lakes
where you can go canoeing, or go snorkelling to discover the gorgeous
underwater world of fish and waving underwater vegetation. Another
nature destination is Wekiwa Springs State Park.
This nature reserve is located at the headwaters of the Wekiva River.
This park has a network of over 20 kilometres in walking routes, with
fantastic panoramas in various places! This area gives you a great
impression of what Florida must have looked like in the time of the
Timucuan Indians. Of course you can have fun on and in the water here

Het begint om zes uur in de ochtend met kanonschoten. Srefidensi Dey;
een nationale vrije dag gevierd door de totale gemeenschap. Jong en
oud maken zich op om naar een centrale plek te gaan, waar de viering
gehouden wordt.Vorig jaar werd gekozen voor het district Wanica. De
locatie hangt af van de voorkeur van de regering. Maar vaker gebeurde
het midden in het centrum van Paramaribo, op het groene grasmat
van het Onafhankelijkheidsplein. Het is een dag van plezier, eenheid en
nationale trots. Regen of geen regen… niets kan deze dag verpesten.
It starts at six in the morning, with cannon fire. Srefidensi Dey, a
national holiday celebrated by the entire community. Young and old
get ready to go to a central location, where the celebration is being
held. Last year, the Wanica district was chosen. The location depends
on the government’s preference. But more often, it has happened in
the centre of Paramaribo, on the green grass of the Independence
Square. It’s a day filled with fun, unity and national pride. Even rain
cannot ruin this day.
Historisch moment
De trots en plezier die iedereen tegenwoordig ervaart over de
zelfstandigheid van het land, was er niet altijd. Bij de onderhandelingen
waren niet alle politieke groeperingen voorstanders van de
onafhankelijkheid.Veel Surinamers vreesden voor onrust en vertrokken
in de periode vlak voor de onafhankelijkheid in grote aantallen naar
Nederland. De oppositie en coalitiepartijen bereikten uiteindelijk
consensus en reikten elkaar de hand. Op 19 november 1975 keurden
de Staten unaniem de nieuwe grondwet en de vlag van Suriname goed
en stemden voor de beëindiging van het Statuut van het Koninkrijk
der Nederlanden. Op 24 november werd ‘s avonds voor het laatst de
Nederlandse vlag gestreken. Een groot feest barstte rond middernacht
los. Op 25 november 1975 werd de onafhankelijke Republiek Suriname,
in aanwezigheid van premier Den Uyl en kroonprinses Beatrix, geboren.
Op deze dag werd voor het eerst de vlag van Suriname, zoals we die
nu kennen, gehesen. Johan Ferrier werd beëdigd tot de eerste president

van de Republiek Suriname. Sindsdien wordt elk jaar deze nationale
feestdag vol overgave en uitbundig gevierd door alle Surinamers.
Feest
Gekleed in hun beste uniformen staan de manschappen van de
verschillende gewapende machten opgesteld. Te voet en te wagen.
Hun gezichten strak en in hun handen dragen ze hun glanzend
gepoetste wapens. Uit solidariteit doen pelotons van bevriende
landen ook mee. Samen vormen ze een prachtig defilé. Aangevoerd
door de pelotonleider, trekt de stoet statig voort. Het hoogtepunt
van het geheel, is het salueren van de troepen naar de president.
Massa’s mensen staan aan de kant om dit spektakel mee te maken.
Voor kleine kinderen een geweldig moment. De wapens, uniformen,
commando’s met camouflage besmeerde gezichten, zijn een reflectie
van hun fantasie.
Wanneer de defilé afgelopen is, begint het feest pas echt. Zo
Surinaams als maar wezen kan. Langs het plein staan eindeloos veel
tentjes met de allerlekkerste hapjes en drankjes. Van teloh, pom,
Roti, koekjes, zuurgoed en ballonnen tot een ijskoude Parbo bier en
verkoelend schaafijs. Uit de boxen dreunt typisch Surinaams muziek,
merendeels kaseko muziek gespeeld door verschillende bandjes. Je
heupen kunnen de gezelligheid niet weerstaan. Mensen gekleed in
prachtige culturele kleren en zelf gemaakte outfits in de kleuren van
de Surinaamse vlag, fleuren de dag nog meer op. Ervaar Suriname op
haar best! Wan switi srefidensi!
Historic moment
The pride and pleasure everyone experiences now, hasn’t always
been a matter of course. During the negotiations, not all political
groups agreed with the independence. Many Surinamese people
feared unrest, and departed to the Netherlands in large numbers,
shortly before the independence. The opposition and coalition
parties finally reached an agreement. On November 19, 1975,
the States unanimously approved of the new constitution and the
flag of Suriname, voting to end the Statute of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands. On November 24, the Dutch flag was lowered for the
last time. A huge celebration erupted around midnight. On November
25, 1975, the independent Republic of Suriname, in the presence of
Dutch Prime Minister Den Uyl and Crown Princess Beatrix, was born.
On this day, the current flag of Suriname was hoisted for the first
time. Johan Ferrier was sworn in as the first president of the Republic
of Suriname. Ever since, this national holiday has been celebrated
passionately and exuberantly by all Surinamese people.
Celebration
Dressed in their best uniforms, the troops of the various armed
forces line up, on foot and in vehicles. With solemn faces, carrying
their shiny, polished arms. Out of solidarity, platoons from allied
countries also take part. Together, they make up an impressive
parade. Led by the platoon leader, the procession solemnly
advances. The highlight is when the troops salute the president.
Crowds of people are lined up to experience this spectacle. For little
kids, it’s a wonderful moment. The weapons, uniforms, commandos
with faces covered in camouflage paint, reflect their imagination.
When the parade is over, the party really starts, as Surinamese as
it gets. Along the square there’s an endless amount of stalls with
delicious snacks and drinks. From teloh, pom, roti, biscuits, pickles
and balloons to an ice cold Pardo beer and refreshing shaved ice.
Typical Surinamese music is blasting from the speakers, mostly
kaseko music played by a variety of bands.Your hips won’t be able
to resist the fun. People dressed in beautiful cultural clothing and
homemade outfits in the colours of the Surinamese flag, brighten
the day even more. Experience Suriname at its best! Wan switi

STOELRIEMEN Maak vóór de start en landing uw stoelriemen vast. Houdt

YOUR SEATBELTS Before take off and landing, fasten your seatbelts and keep
these fastened until the ‘fasten seat belt sign’ is turned off. As a precaution, you
may keep your seatbelt loosely fastened during the entire flight.
ONTSPANNING Wij kunnen u voorzien van kranten en tijdschriften. Op de
Mid-Atlantische route worden tijdens de reis films vertoond, terwijl u met behulp van uw koptelefoon kunt genieten van films en aangename muziek. Door
de atmosfeer in de cabine en het stilzitten kunnen uw voeten opzwellen. Draag
daarom ruimzittende schoenen of slippers.
RELAXATION A selection of international newspapers and magazines is available
on the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v.v). And you can also enjoy
music and films via headsets. Because of the cabin pressure and enforced sitting
for several hours, your feet may become swollen. Wear, therefore, roomy shoes
or slippers.

GEZONDHEID In het vliegtuig is de lucht droger dan daarbuiten. Drink daarom zoveel mogelijk tijdens een vlucht. Alcohol, koffie en thee onttrekken vocht
aan het lichaam, beperk daarom het gebruik. Beweeg (zeker op lange vluchten)
zoveel mogelijk. In de magazine staan er oefeningen die u in uw stoel kunt doen.
De boordapotheek bevat medicijnen voor de meest voorkomende kwaaltjes.
Gebruikt u medicijnen, neem die dan altijd mee in uw handbagage.
HEALTH The atmosphere inside the aircraft is dryer than that on the ground ,
therefore you should drink as much as possible during a flight . Alcohol , coffee
and tea however, remove fluids from the body . Use these stimulans as little as
possible. Move about as much as possible ( especially on longer flights ). In the
magazine you will find exercises which you can do while sitting in your aircraft
seat. The medical dispensary on board contains medicine for the most anticipated
minor complaints . If you take medicine regularly , be sure to always place this in
your hand baggage.

baby bij start en landing een fopspeen of flesje met drinken, om de druk op de
trommelvliezen te verminderen. Een ouder kind geeft u een zuigsnoepje of een
stukje kauwgum. Zelf kunt u eventueel ook geeuwen of slikken om de druk te
verminderen.
ELEKTRONISCHE APPARATUUR In het vliegtuig mag u geen apparaten gebruiken waarin een zender of ontvanger zijn verwerkt. Radio’s, mobiele telefoons, laptops en televisies werken namelijk storend op het gevoelige navigatiesysteem van een vliegtuig.
HANDBAGAGE Iedere passagier mag één (1) stuk handbagage meenemen.
Het moet van een dergelijk formaat zijn dat u het kwijt kunt onder uw stoel.
De bergplaatsen boven uw hoofd zijn alleen bestemd voor lichte artikelen, zoals hoeden, mantels en andere lichte artikelen. Open de klep voorzichtig en
kijk bij het opendoen van de hat-rack uit dat de spullen erin niet eruit vallen.
CHILDREN Are you traveling with a baby? The steward(ess) will gladly prepare the
baby bottle for you. Please give sufficient advance notice so that your baby does not
have to wait. On the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v. v.) we can in
case of emergency also provide baby food and diapers(limited available). For older
children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must drink a
lot. If you are breast- feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give your
baby a pacifier or a bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give
an older child either candy or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or
swallow to lessen the pressure.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use electric equipment with transmiters and receivers. In addition , radios, cellular phones,
laptops and televisions disrupt the sensitive navigation system and are not allowed.
HAND LUGGAGE Every passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry on hand luggage that fits easily under the aircraft seat. The luggage bins above your head
are only intended for light articles such as hats, coats , flowers etc. Open the flap
carefully so that items do not fall out.
BAGAGE Voor volwassenen en voor kinderen vanaf 2 jaar mogen tussen Paramaribo en Amsterdam maximaal 1 stuk van maximaal 25 kg (54 lbs) meenemen in de Tourist Class. In de Business Class geldt 2 stuks van 32 kg (70 lbs).
Op vluchten van en naar de Verenigde Staten geldt een andere bagageregeling,
te weten: 2 stuks; elk stuk met een afmeting van maximaal 158 cm (62 inch)
(lengte+breedte+hoogte) en een gewicht van maximaal 23 kg (50 lbs

place address stickers on both the interior and exterior of your luggage . On the

Aan het woord is Nathalie Oldenstam, oprichter en organisatieleider van de Stichting De Kids van Amsterdam Oost
(KvAO). De stichting KvAO is een community van kinderen, tieners en jongeren in de leeftijd van 5 tot 25 jaar,
waar gefocust wordt op de talentontwikkeling van dans,
theater en muziek. Nathalie Oldenstam is bewoner van
de voormalige probleemwijk Transvaalbuurt in Amsterdam Oost. Zeven jaar geleden heeft zij het initiatief genomen
om kinderen, tieners en jongeren uit Amsterdam Oost een veilige omgeving te bieden waar zij hun talenten kunnen ontdekken, ontwikkelen,
laten zien en hun toekomstdroom kunnen najagen.
So says Nathalie Oldenstam, founder and organizational
leader of the Foundation The Kids of Amsterdam Oost
(KvAO). The KvAO foundation is a community of children, teenagers and youngsters ranging in age from 5
to 25, with a focus on development of talent in dance,
theatre and music. Nathalie Oldenstam lives in former
problem area Transvaalbuurt in Amsterdam Oost. Seven
years ago, she took the initiative to provide a safe environment for children, teenagers and youngsters from Amsterdam Oost,
where they can discover, develop and show their talents, and pursue
their dreams for the future.
Samen met artistiek leider SimoneVrieze als co-founder van dit succesproject, heeft zij in 2006 de ‘Betere Buurt’ prijs van woningcorporatie
Ymere gewonnen. Met het prijzengeld werd onder andere de stichting
De Kids van Amsterdam Oost (KvAO) opgericht. Beide vrouwen hebben hun wortels in Suriname, maar besloten jaren geleden hun koffer
te pakken en een enkeltje Paramaribo-Amsterdam te boeken. Met in
hun hoofd de visie “wonen, leven en groeien in Amsterdam” maar met
Suriname in hun hart besloten zij om hun talenten op het gebied van
artistieke vaardigheden en organisatietalent te bundelen ten gunste

van de jeugd van Amsterdam Oost, die volgens hen best wat
extra ondersteuning kon gebruiken om hun talenten te
ontwikkelen.
Veilige omgeving
“Talent kom je tegen op elke hoek van de straat,” zo
verzekert Nathalie Oldenstam. “In sommige gezinnen
is er echter geen of niet genoeg geld om deze talenten te
ontwikkelen en dat is zonde. Wij vinden dat alle kinderen het recht
hebben om alles uit het leven te halen, hun talenten te koesteren en te
ontwikkelen. Onze stichting biedt kids een veilige omgeving waarin zij
hun talenten kunnen ontdekken, koesteren en natuurlijk ook kunnen
laten zien.”
In november 2014 kwam voor de De Kids van Amsterdam Oost een
lang gekoesterde droom uit. Na jarenlang gebruik te hebben gemaakt
van tijdelijke ruimtes kreeg men een eigen onderkomen in het Hugo
Olijfveld Huis aan de Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam. De populariteit van
de stichting zorgde ervoor dat het aantal actieve deelnemers (vrijwilligers, stagiaires en docenten) groeide van tien naar meer dan honderd.
Er was dringend behoefte aan een eigen locatie waar 24/7 toegang zou
zijn tot dansstudio en werk/repetitieruimte.
Together with artistic leader Simone Vrieze as co-founder of this
successful project, she won the Ymere housing corporation ‘Better Neighbourhood’ award in 2006. Part of the prize money was
used to establish the foundation The Kids of Amsterdam Oost
(KvAO). Both women have their roots in Suriname, but years
ago decided to pack their bags for a one-way trip ParamariboAmsterdam. With the vision “living and growing in Amsterdam”
in mind, but with Suriname in their hearts, they decided to combine their artistic and organizational talents to the benefit of the
young people in Amsterdam Oost, who, they thought,
could do with some extra support to develop their
talents.
Safe environment
“You can find talent on every street corner,” Nathalie Oldenstam assures. “In some families, however, there is no money, or not enough, to develop these
talents, which is a shame. We believe all children have the
right to get everything they can out of life, to nurture and develop their talents. Our foundation offers kids a safe environment
in which they can discover, nurture and of course showcase their
talents.”
In November 2014, The Kids of Amsterdam Oost saw a longcherished dream come true. After having used temporary spaces for years, they got their own permanent home in the Hugo
Olijfveld Huis at the Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam. The foundation’s popularity caused the number of active participants (volunteers, interns and teachers) to grow from ten to more than
one hundred. A permanent location, with 24/7 access to a dance
studio and working/rehearsal room was a dire need.

maar geen geld voor de inrichting.We moesten roeien met de riemen
die we hadden en besloten om geld door middel van een loterij bij
elkaar te sprokkelen. Met de opbrengst hebben we de theatervoorstelling ‘Something’ georganiseerd en de open dagen van het Kvao
Headquarter, de officiële opening en het kindergala. De loterij heeft
ook bijgedragen aan het kunnen inhuren van Michael Mendoza als
rolmodel voor de muzikanten binnen de stichting en de opening voor
de buurt met verschillende workshops door artiesten. Door Surinam
Airways – die de stichting een warm hart toedraagt – werd een retourticket Amsterdam-Paramaribo ter beschikking gesteld wat het
aantal verkochte loten zeer positief beïnvloedde.”
In de maanden daarna werd de ruimte door zelfwerkzaamheid omgetoverd tot een sfeervolle en inspirerende dansvloer en werkruimte.
Veel lokale ondernemingen droegen hun steentje bij in de vorm van
hoge kortingen en gratis werkzaamheden. Ook de ouders van de kinderen droegen flink bij.
Volgens Nathalie Oldenstam, Ingrid Grunwald, SimoneVrieze en Charissa Mitrasing, de 4 sterke vrouwen die deze stichting dragen, is de
KvAO community een perfect voorbeeld van en voor de participatiesamenleving.“Niet altijd de hand ophouden voor subsidie maar zelf
flink aan de slag gaan.”
Nathalie Oldenstam: “Our foundation may have had a nice home,
but there was no money for decoration. We had to make do
with what we had, and decided to gather the necessary funds
through a raffle.With the proceeds, we organized the ‘Something’
theatre performance and the KvAO Headquarter open days, the
official opening and the children’s gala. The raffle also contributed to being able to hire Michael Mendoza as a role model
for the musicians within the foundation, and the opening to the
neighbourhood, with various workshops by artists. Surinam Airways – which has a soft spot for the foundation – provided an

number of tickets sold.”

Omdat er binnen het team van de stichting enkele docenten, vrijwilligers, kinderen en jongeren van Surinaamse afkomst actief betrokken
zijn, heeft het moederland altijd een warm plekje in de gedachten. Een
volgend project van de KvAO is om in het najaar met een groep kinderen en tieners naar Suriname af te reizen en daar één of meerdere
benefietvoorstellingen te geven waarvan de opbrengst ten goede zal
komen aan een lokaal project voor kinderen.

turned into an attractive and inspiring dancefloor and workspace.

Frans-Guyana, of zoals de Fransen hun land noemen, La Guyane, zal niet makkelijk in het rijtje van ultieme
vakantiebestemmingen worden geplaatst. En precies dat is jammer, want met een vlucht van 40 minuten met
Surinam Airways, kom je in een land waar genoeg te bezichtigen en te doen is. En bijzonder is zeker dat FransGuyana een interessante geschiedenis heeft en deze goed heeft geconserveerd.

GESCHIEDENIS
Advies vooraf: aangezien er genoeg te doen is, is het raadzaam om bij
aankomst direct het programma te bespreken. Wij – Kenneth Heesbien (fotograaf) en Pierre Delattre (gids) – besluiten de eerste ochtend
een bezoek te brengen aan de markt. De mensen zijn er vriendelijk
en uitleg wordt graag gegeven: een bekend beeld in Frans-Guyana. De
markt is niet druk en redelijk schoon.Veel tropisch fruit dat een aanrader is om mee terug te nemen naar het hotel. Vietnamees eten en het
kopen van kunst behoort ook tot de mogelijkheden.
Wandeling en Kathedraal
Na het bezoek aan de markt, die aan de rand van de stad ligt, wandelen
wij de stad in. De winkels zijn er veel van hetzelfde. Kleding, schoeisel
en tussendoor wat specialiteiten zoals de stoffenzaak.Veel terrasjes zijn
er niet, maar bij Le Bistro doen wij ons te goed aan koffie en Pomme
Citronsap (appel en citroensap, red.). Daar valt ons op dat wij dichtbij de
prachtige Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur (Kathedraal van de Heilige
Verlosser, red.) zijn. Dat komt ons goed uit, want het is al ver na 13.00
uur en de winkels sluiten hun deuren tussen één en vier uur ’s middags.
De deuren staan open en wij mogen binnen een kijkje nemen. Enkele
gelovigen zitten er in aanbidding en het is er muisstil en sereen. De
bouw van de kerk begon in 1825. Acht jaar later werd het opgeleverd
en in 1934 verheven tot kathedraal. In 1992 kreeg het de status van historisch monument.Veel van de oorspronkelijke architectuur, waarvan
een deel is overgebracht uit een oude gevangenis, is er nog. Zoals de
biechtstoelen, kerkbanken en het glas in lood. Er staat nog een prachtige
pijporgel, je raakt er niet uitgekeken.
Les Palmistes
Tegen het eind van de middag komen wij bij op het terras van Les Palmistes, het bekendste terras in Cayenne. Het ligt namelijk bij de Palmentuin.
De bar en het hotel bestaan al vanaf 1918. Mede door het uitzicht zit je
er zeer prettig. Je kunt er genieten van een snelle hap, maar er zijn ook
muziekavonden.
Op de vrijdagvond staan er langs het plein verschillende eetwagens,
waar je je tegoed kunt doen aan het zogenoemde streetfood. Op het
plein zijn de kinderen aan het spelen, terwijl de ouders vanaf de tribunes
toekijken.

Uit eten
Door de week is het erg rustig in de stad. Bij navraag blijkt dat de FransGuyanezen door de week graag thuis eten en dan is het zelf koken of
het thuis laten bezorgen. De restaurants waar wij binnenstappen hebben dan ook bijna allemaal een bezorgservice. Het lege beeld verandert
wanneer je Restaurant Paris Cayenne binnenstapt. Het is er druk en het
geroezemoes wikkelt zich als een warme deken over je heen. Het is
het duurste restaurant in Cayenne, maar ook de plek waar je het best
Frans kunt eten. De steak met groenten en aardappelen en het dessert Crème brûlée zijn een stukje zaligheid voor de smaakpapillen. De
eigenaar houdt merkbaar veel van kunst. Er hangen ook werken van
Surinaamse kunstenaars, met name van Marcel Pinas en George Struikelblok, alsook van diverse internationale kunstenaars.
Uit eten kan net zo goedkoop of zo duur als mogelijk. Het lokale eten,
waarbij veel wildvlees zoals pingo en kangoeroe wordt gekookt, is er
ook te vinden.Verder is er keus uit een stevig bordje Italiaans of fast
food. Houd er wel rekening mee dat op de vrijdag- en zaterdagavond
de restaurants druk bezocht worden.
Shoppen
Een middagje shoppen kan ook op schema worden gezet.Want naast
de winkels in het centrum zijn er nu ook Malls te vinden. Het zoekwerk
naar de geschikte schoen, tas of kledingstuk kan dan beginnen.Tussen
de units zitten de locals met snuisterijen en typische Frans-Guyanese
koopjes. Er is ook een grote supermarkt Carrefour waar van alles en
nog wat te vinden is tegen redelijke prijzen. Ook grote winkels voor
huishoudelijke apparaten zijn een warme aanbeveling. En wie interesse
heeft in auto’s kijkt er z’n ogen uit met de Franse merken.
Consulaten
Voor wie dringend behoefte heeft aan informatie of een reisdocument
kwijt is, zijn er de consulaten.Veelal gevestigd in mooie gebouwen. Een
bezoekje aan het Surinaams consulaat levert ook de nodige informatie
op. Zo worden er duizenden toeristenkaarten en visa afgegeven aan de
Fransen die op hun beurt graag Suriname bezoeken.Alle informatie is
er te krijgen, en wij begrijpen van de consul-generaal Stephanus Dendoe dat zij er alles aan doen om eenieder die over de vloer komt op
het consulaat van dienst te zijn.

overheerst ontzettend. Je komt er flink wat
monumenten en historische gebouwen tegen.
Echter tonen ook de woonhuizen sterke
historische architectuur.
Centre Spatial Guyanais
In Kourou, ongeveer een uur rijden vanuit Cayenne, ligt het Ruimteveerstation annex ruimteveer museum Centre Spatial Guyanais. Al bij
het oprijden van het terrein staat een immens grote satelliet. De tour
zelf begint zo’n 25 kilometer verderop, waar de bezoekers met een
airco bus naar toe worden gebracht, terwijl er tussendoor uitleg wordt
gegeven. En dan begrijp ik waarom weinig anderstaligen de tour nemen.
Het is volledig in het Frans, helaas geen woord Engels ertussen. Bij de
aanmelding hebben wij aangegeven geen Frans te verstaan en kregen
daarom bij de verschillende tussenstops uitleg. De veiligheidsmaatregelen zijn strang.; zonder paspoort (ook voor de inwoners zelf) kom je er
niet in. In alle gebouwen zijn er veiligheidspoortjes en is er aan het begin
een tassencontrole.
In Kourou worden drie typen satellieten gelanceerd: kleine, middelgrote
en een grote. De Vega, Soyuz en de meest bekende Ariane en hebben
veelal telecommunicatie of meteorologische doeleinden. In Kourou
vinden er geen lanceringen plaats met astronauten. De tour gaat langs
de satelliet stations, de controlekamers, een heuvel met een goed overzicht over het gebied en eindigt bij het ultra moderne controlestation
Jupiter. Het is de plek waar politici en opdrachtgevers plaatsnemen bij
een lancering. Publiek is ook welkom, indien er genoeg plek aanwezig is.
Kourou is ‘een land in een land’, met een eigen ‘regering’.Als Frans-Guyana bijvoorbeeld onafhankelijk zou worden, zou Kourou daar geen onderdeel van uitmaken.Ter vergelijking: de stad is zeven keer groter dan
Parijs en de helft van Martinique. Jaarlijks komen er ongeveer 40.000
toeristen. De tour is gratis, voor toegang naar het museum moet wel
worden betaald. Een warme aanrader.
LA GUYANE
Devil’s Island
In Kourou ligt ook de steiger naar The penal colony of Cayenne oftewel
Duivelseiland.Vanwege tijdgebrek konden wij die helaas niet bezoeken.
Volgens informatie is er niet veel te zien, maar is de aanwezigheid op
het eiland overweldigend. Het doet gelijk denken aan het boek Papillon (1970) en de verfilming daarvan. Het vertelt het verhaal van Henri
Charrière, die samen met een andere gevangene wist te ontvluchten.
In het boek is te lezen wat de gevangenen allemaal meemaakten.Wie
er zat, bleef er voor de rest van z’n leven onder barre omstandigheden.
In 1953 werd het 101 jaar na opening voor eeuwig gesloten en is nu
opengesteld voor bezoekers.
De geschiedenis
De geschiedenis van Frans-Guyana is dominant aanwezig Je komt er
flink wat monumenten en historische gebouwen tegen. Echter tonen
ook de woonhuizen sterke historische architectuur. Er zijn verschillende forten die vaak een kunstexpositie herbergen. En niet te vergeten
musea met diverse historische bezienswaardigheden.Wie niet van de
stad en haar architectuur gecharmeerd raakt, kan een bezoek brengen
aan de Botanische Tuin of aan een van drie natuurreservaten die het
land rijk is. Net even buiten Cayenne, ligt Rémire-Montjoly en daar kun
je goed gebruik maken van het strand.
En dan wil onze reisgids Pierre van Atlas Voyages nog een ding duidelijk
maken.“Frans-Guyana is geen land.Wij zijn een deelstaat.Veel mensen
vergissen zich daarin. Net als Martinique en Guadeloupe staan wij niet
op onszelf en komt letterlijk alles van de centrale overheid in Frankrijk.
Als je dat voor ogen houdt, zal je veel meer begrijpen en genieten van
je trip naar La Guyane.”
En dat zijn we met hem eens. Onze drie dagen durende trip naar La
Guyane was de moeite waard en heeft een blijvende indruk op ons
gemaakt. Met een goede gids, die de taal machtig is, is deze deelstaat van
Frankrijk zeker een bezoek waard. Een ervaring die ook u wellicht niet
zo snel zult vergeten.

French Guiana, or, as the French call their country, La Guyane, won’t quickly end up in a list of ultimate holiday
destinations. And that’s a shame, because a 40 minute flight away with Surinam Airways is a country with plenty
to visit and do. And an extra special aspect is the history of French Guiana, which has been well-preserved.
LA GUYANE
A LAND FILLED
WITH HISTORY
One piece of advice: since there’s enough to do, it would be advisable to arrange your schedule upon arrival.We – Kenneth Heesbien
(photographer) and Pierre Delattre (guide) – decide to visit the
market on our first morning. The people there are friendly, and
happy to explain things, which is typical for the people in French
Guiana. The market isn’t crowded and quite clean. There’s a lot of
tropical fruit, and consider taking some back to the hotel. Vietnamese food and buying art are also among the possibilities.
Walk and cathedral
After a visit to the market, at the edge of town, we walk into the
city. Many of the shops look alike. Clothing and shoes, interspersed
with some specialty stores, like the fabric shop. There aren’t many
terraces, but at Le Bistro we enjoy coffee and Pomme Citron juice
(apple and lemon juice, ed.). We notice that we’re close to the
beautiful Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur (St Saviour’s Cathedral, ed.).
That’s a nice coincidence, because it’s past 1 pm, and the shops
are closed between one and four in the afternoon. The doors are
open, and we’re allowed a look inside. A number of worshipers are
present, and the atmosphere is quiet and serene. Construction of
the church started in 1825. Eight years later, construction was
finished, and in 1934 it was elevated to cathedral status. In 1992,
it was given the status of historic monument. Much of the original
architecture, part of which was transferred from an old prison,
is still there. Like the confessionals, pews, and the stained glass
windows.There is also a beautiful pipe organ, the whole building is
a feast for the eyes.
Les Palmistes
Toward the end of the afternoon, we reach the terrace of Les
Palmistes, the most famous terrace in Cayenne, located close to
the Palm Garden. The bar and hotel have been there since 1918,
and the view is very pleasant.You can enjoy a quick bite there, but
music nights are also organized.
On Friday nights, various food stalls line the square, where you can
indulge in street food. On the square, children are playing, while
the parents watch from the stands.
Eating out
On weekdays, the city is very quiet. It turns out that the French
Guianese prefer eating at home on weekdays, when they either
cook at home or have food delivered to them. The restaurants we
enter, nearly all have a delivery service. The empty view changes
when you enter Restaurant Paris Cayenne. It’s crowded, and the
murmur envelopes you like a warm blanket. It’s the most expensive restaurant in Cayenne, but then, it’s also the place with the
best French food. The steak with vegetables and potatoes and the
crème brûlée dessert are a feast for the taste buds. The owner
visibly loves art. There are works created by Surinamese artists,
namely Marcel Pinas and George Struikelblok, as well as by various international artists.
Eating out can be as cheap or expensive as you like. The local
food, which uses a lot of game, like pingo and kangaroo, can also
be found. Choices range from a good plate of Italian food to fast
food. Do keep in mind that on Friday and Saturday nights, the
restaurants get many visitors.
Shopping
An afternoon of shopping can also be included in the schedule.
Because in addition to the shops in the centre, there are malls as
well now. The search for the right shoe, purse or piece of clothing
can begin. Among the units are the locals with trinkets and typical
French Guianese bargains.There is also the large Carrefour supermarket, where all sorts of things can be found at fair prices. Large
stores for household appliances are also warmly recommended.
And anyone with an interest in cars has plenty to look at with the
French brands.
Consulates
If you urgently require information or have lost a travel document,
there are the consulates, often housed in beautiful buildings. A visit
to the Surinamese consulate also yields plenty of information. For
instance, thousands of tourist cards and visas are given to French
tourists looking to visit Suriname. A lot of information is available,
and Consul General Stephanus Dendoe tells us they’re doing everything to help each visitor to the consulate.

In Kourou, about an hour’s drive from Cayenne, is the Space Shuttle
station aka museum, Centre Spatial Guyanais. Upon entering the
grounds, you’ll immediately notice an immense satellite. The tour
itself starts 25 kilometres away, where the visitors are taken in an
air-conditioned bus, while a guide explains the sights. And then I understand why few foreigners take the tour. It’s completely in French,
without a word of English, sadly. When signing up, we indicated we
didn’t understand French, so at the various stops, we were given an
explanation. Security is very tight; without a passport (that includes
native inhabitants) you can’t enter, there are security gates in every
building, and a baggage inspection at the start.
In Kourou, three types of satellites are launched. A small one, a medium-sized one and a large one.The Vega, Soyuz and the most famous,
Ariane, most of which have telecommunications or meteorological
purposes. In Kourou, no astronauts are launched.The tour passes by
the satellite stations, the control rooms, a hill with a nice overview of
the area, ending at the ultramodern Jupiter control station.This is the
place where politicians and patrons sit down for a launch.The public
is welcome too, as long as there are enough seats.
Kourou is a ‘country within a country’, with its own ‘government’. For
instance, if French Guiana wanted to gain independence, Kourou
would not be a part of that. To compare: the city is seven times larger than Paris, and half the size of Martinique. On an annual basis,
it attracts roughly 40,000 tourists. The tour is free, but there is an
admission fee for the museum. Highly recommended.

Devil’s Island
Also in Kourou is the pier to the penal colony of Cayenne, that
is Devil’s Island. Due to lack of time, we weren’t able to visit it,
unfortunately. According to sources, there’s not much to see there,
but the presence on the island is overwhelming. It immediately
reminds one of the book Papillon (1970), and the film adaptation
of it. It tells the story of Henri Charrière, who, together with a fellow inmate, managed to escape. In the book, one can read what
the prisoners went through.They would all stay there for life, under
barren circumstances. In 1953, 101 years after opening, it was
closed forever, and is now open to visitors.
History
The history of French Guiana is omnipresent. You’ll encounter
many a monument and historic building. The houses also exhibit
great historic architecture. There are various forts, many of which
are home to art exhibitions. And that’s not even mentioning the
museums, with various historical points of interest. If you’re not
a fan of the city and its architecture, you can visit the Botanic
Garden, or one of the country’s three nature reserves. Just outside
Cayenne is Rémire-Montjoly, which has a lovely beach.
And then our guide, Pierre of Atlas Voyages, wants to get one thing
clear. “French Guiana is not a country.We are an overseas department. Many people get that wrong. Just like Martinique and Guadeloupe, we are not independent, and literally everything comes
from the central government in France. When you take that into
account, you’ll understand and enjoy a lot more during your trip
to La Guyane.”
And we agree with him. Our three-day trip to La Guyane was
worthwhile, and has left a lasting impression on us. With a good
guide, who speaks the language, this French overseas department
is definitely worth a visit. An experience that you won’t forget
quickly either.

in Suriname mag verblijven als u niet van Surinaamse herkomst bent?
Verlenging is helaas niet mogelijk.

blijven genieten. Ook bestaan er voor u andere mogelijkheden om er
nog langer te verblijven.
Let wel: Voor stage/studie, vrijwilligerswerk en zaken/werk dient men
een visum aan te vragen op het Consulaat van Suriname in Amsterdam.
Voorbeelden van officiële documenten:
• Een uittreksel uit het Gezagsregister of van de Gemeente
• Een geboorteakte van het kind
• Een kopie van het trouwboekje waarin de minderjarige is bijgeschreven
• Beschikking Rechtbank waarin recent een uitspraak is gedaan over het
gezag of voogdijschap
Voor een vlotte dienstverlening aan u is het noodzakelijk dat u de juiste
documenten heeft.
Surinaamse origine? Ja, als:
- u geboren bent in Suriname of
- u geboren bent uit een moeder die in Suriname geboren is, of
- u erkend bent door uw vader die in Suriname geboren is, of
- u wettelijk gehuwd bent met een persoon van Surinaamse origine.
Opmerking: Om rechten te kunnen ontlenen aan uw Surinaamse
origine, zult u moeten bewijzen tot die categorie te behoren.
De Toeristenkaart, ook voor u
Bent u (vreemdeling) van Surinaamse origine? Dan kunt u in ieder geval
in aanmerking komen. Uw nationaliteit is daarbij niet van belang.

- Op de Visumafdeling van het Consulaat Generaal van de Republiek
Suriname te Amsterdam van maandag t/m vrijdag van 09.00 - 15.00 uur.
- Op Schiphol bij de speciaal daarvoor bestemde Toeristenkaart balies,
in Vertrekhal 3, in het gangpad a/d voorzijde tussen ingang B en C.
Openingstijden: De balies op Schiphol zijn in principe bij elke vlucht
van de SLM en KLM naar Suriname geopend voor dienstverlening
gedurende tenminste 2 (twee) uren van de respectievelijke
inchecktijden.
Voor actuele informatie over de dagelijkse openingstijden van deze
balies kunt u de website www.consulaatsuriname.nl raadplegen.
U wordt gevraagd rekening te houden met wijzigingen die kort van
tevoren bekend zijn.
Buiten Nederland:
- Op de J. A. Pengel luchthaven in Suriname bij aankomst van alle
vluchten;

Visum voor meerdere reizen
De Toeristenkaart is persoonlijk. Na te zijn afgestempeld door de
immigratiedienst van Suriname, wordt de kaart teruggeven aan de
reiziger. De Toeristenkaart is niet geldig voor binnenkomst als deze niet
is voorzien van uw paspoortnummer en een stem van de Surinaamse
overheid.
Let op: u kunt op de JAP luchthaven alleen cash en met gepast geld
betalen
Vreemdelingen die het voornemen hebben om hun verblijf in Suriname
te onderbreken voor een kort bezoek aan andere landen (binnen twee
maanden), worden geadviseerd om een toeristenvisum voor meerdere
binnenkomsten aan te vragen.

vertegenwoordiging van de Republiek Suriname in uw regio/transitland
om na te gaan waar u vooraf een toeristenkaart of een visum kan
verkrijgen.
Machtiging tot kort verblijf
Vreemdelingen van niet-Surinaamse origine of afkomst zijn die langer
dan 90 dagen in Suriname wensen te verblijven dienen te beschikken
over een goedgekeurde Machtiging tot Kort Verblijf (MKV) en een KV
visum.

ARE YOU GOING TO SURINAME FOR A HOLIDAY OR FAMILY VISIT?
YOU CAN EASILY TRAVEL WITH A TOURIST CARD
First, find out if you are eligible, using the list “the Tourist Card, also for you”
in this leaflet.
You can obtain the Tourist Card on the day of departure, but you can also
purchase it well in advance, if you have gathered all necessary travel documents.
The Tourist Card costs 20 euros in Europe, or 25 US$ outside Europe.You
can use it for 1 (one) entry into Suriname.
Forms and passport photos are not necessary.
Fast and… very simple
The travel plans have been made, or the suitcases packed, and you can
imagine feeling the warm sun already.
Definitely keep at hand: a return airline ticket, a passport that’s valid for
at least six months on arrival in Suriname, and last but certainly not least,
additional documents, for instance for minors (children under the age of
18) or to prove your Surinamese origin.
Duration of stay after arrival using a Tourist Card
Please keep in mind that you will not be allowed to stay in Suriname longer than 90
(ninety) days if you are not of Surinamese origin. Extension is not possible, unfortunately.
If you are of Surinamese origin, you can enjoy a 6 (six) month stay.You will also have
options for an extended stay.
Please note:
For internship/study, volunteering and business/work, a visa has to be requested at
the Consulate of Suriname in Amsterdam.
Travelling with minors
What additional documents do you need?
If you plan on travelling with your own child(ren):
- bring along an official document that shows you have legal custody.
In case you do not have legal custody as a parent, you will need
permission from the parent/guardian who has custody.
Examples of official documents:
• an extract from the Custody Register or the municipal
administration
• the child’s birth certificate
• a copy of the marriage book to which the minor has been added
• Court order of a recent judgement on custody or guardianship
For speedy service to you, it’s necessary for you to have the right
documents.
Surinamese origin? Yes, if:
• you were born in Suriname, or
• you were born to a mother who was born in Suriname, or
• you are recognized by your father who was born in Suriname,
or
• you are legally married to a person of Surinamese origin.
The Tourist Card, also for you
Are you (a foreigner) of Surinamese origin? Then you
are definitely eligible. Your nationality does not matter in that case.
Foreigners who are also eligible for the tourist card, are nationals of the
following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
1. a declaration of consent signed by at least 1 (one) parent/
guardian with legal custody;
2. copy of the passport or ID of the parent/guardian in question;
3. official proof of parenthood/guardianship/legal custody

1 - Neem niet te veel kleding mee.
2 - Drink niet zonder het eerst te zuiveren rivierwater, uw
darmen zijn daar niet op ingesteld.
3 - Door het kleurrijke land is het een lust om te fotograferen.
Maar, niet iedereen stelt het op prijs om ongevraagd op de foto
te komen. Dit geldt ook voor hun persoonlijke eigendommen.
Door het spirituele geloof is dit in het binnenland nog sterker
en geldt het ook voor spirituele plekken en afbeeldingen.
Vraagt u dus altijd vooraf of u een foto van een persoon,
de eigendommen of locatie mag nemen. Vaak als hier een
vergoeding tegenover staat, krijgt u die goedkeuring. Personen
die u fotografeert waarderen het extra als zij een afdruk van
de foto mogen ontvangen.
Een portret dat zonder opdracht is gemaakt, mag alleen
worden gepubliceerd als daarmee geen redelijk belang van de
geportretteerde in gevaar komt. In veel gevallen gaat het dan
om een privacybelang. Dit alles geld natuurlijk ook voor het
filmen.

to that stage, in some cases you’ll need to think of the following travel
necessities.
In light of the nature of jungle tours, it would be wise to bring along an
overnight bag or rucksack. Those are easier to stow away in a bus and
on a boat.
Tips:
1 - Don’t bring too many clothes.
2 – Don’t drink river water without purifying it first,
your bowels are not used to that.
3 - The colourful land makes it a feast for photographers.
But not everyone likes to be photographed without
being asked. This also goes for their personal property.
The spiritual belief in the inland strengthens this
notion, and it also applies to spiritual places and
images.
Therefore, always ask beforehand if you’re allowed to
take a picture of a person, properties or a location.
Usually if there’s a reimbursement for this, you’ll get
that approval. Persons you take a picture of, especially
appreciate it if they can get a print of the photograph.
A portrait that’s not made on commission, may only be
published if no legitimate interest of the person portrayed
is endangered by it. In many cases it’s a privacy interest.
This all goes for filming as well, of course.
