Prsrt Std. U.S. Postage PAID Bend, OR Permit No. 473 Volume 32, No. 5 JANUARY 2010 Of ficial Publication of the Oregon State Snowmobile Association www.oregonsnow.org P.O. Box 6328 Bend, OR 97708 Avalanche: When the Snow Slides left to right: The bowl at Pelican Butte, There is a sled down there, debris, and Kevin Geaney being dug out. by Mike Lancaster Wesley Amos a 28 year old man from La Pine died January 2nd while snowmobiling the Roller Coaster area on Paulina Peak. A 200 yard wide slide caught Amos and witnesses feared the worse. Deschutes County Search and Rescue was called immediately for help. Amos was found dead before Search and Rescue arrived. Search and Rescue checked the area and verified that no one else had been caught in the slide. Further to the south on the same day on Pelican Butte another rider, Kevin Geaney, was luckier. He took a 600 foot ride on an avalanche down the side of Pelican Butte. He ended up face up with one hand sticking out of the snow. A different unrelated party of snowmobilers further up the butte were videoing the action. (warning strong adult language) youtube.com/watch?v=ijpH7KuauE8 After watching the above video anyone should have a new and stronger respect for how quick and powerful an avalanche is. The eight photos to the right show time lapse of the first 10 seconds of the video. Oregon does not have publicly funded, state or federal, avalanche program. There are back country users in central Oregon that have set up a website and are collecting user reports on avalanches here in Oregon to make the case to the state and federal government that resources are needed here. It is absolutely critical that all witnessed avalanches in Oregon, regardless of size, are reported. Oregon has very few resources for avalanche forecasting and such, outside of Mt. Hood. We have to collect data in order to make the case that Oregon needs these resources as well. Unfortunately, this has been somewhat difficult in the past, and there has been little to no coordination. Ben Hansen has been working closely with a group that is spearheading the efforts to get these resources, the Central Oregon Avalanche Association (COAA). www.coavalanche.org We have created a simple online reporting system that anyone can use to submit avalanche data. It is very basic right now, as we wanted to get it out there. It will mature and evolve over time. Even if you do not have all the information that is requested PLEASE send in what you have. You can access the Oregon EARS (Electronic Avalanche Reporting System) at: ears.sledspace.com If you do witness a slide, please try and document it as completely as possible, photos and a thorough description of the snow and conditions are important to have. By making reports you very well could be saving lives down the road. All photos provided by Sledspace.com, Kevin Geaney, and Ronn Boehlke. from left to right, top to bottom, what 10 seconds looks like. Peggy Sez... A Message From Your President John Vogel, OSSA President Happy New Years to all. I hope a good share of you will be attending the 2010 OSSA Convention in John Day the week of January 19-24 with me. Looking at the calendar of events it should be a full week of fun. I will get the pleasure of seeing some of the trails in the seat of the Grant County Snowballers groomer. Ron Greb tells me it will be an experience I won’t forget. If you can’t make it to John Day for the OSSA Board/membership meeting, try to attend one of the other two board meetings (April or August) this year. Attending a board meeting helps you to better understand the purpose and workings of OSSA. The Oregon State Snowmobile Association (OSSA) was formed many years ago to serve the interest of snowmobile owners, to defend such owners against discriminatory legislation, and promote regulations for the betterment of snowmobilers. OSSA has worked for many years to provide an image of safety, protect and enhance all natural and environmental resources, and pro- tect land usage by working with the Regional and local Forest Service to keep riding areas open. OSSA works very hard to develop a fraternal spirit among local snowmobilers and other winter recreationalist to provide a medium for the exchange of snowmobiling information. OSSA participates in the annual Fly-In to Washington D.C. to discuss snowmobile related issues with your congressional representatives and national land managers. OSSA represents snowmobilers on the State and Federal level with a voice in the American Council of Snowmobile Association and the International Snowmobile Council. The Oregon State Snowmobile Association Board, local club officers, and members participate in a wide variety of volunteer projects and charities to promote the image of snowmobilers across the state. OSSA is there to insure that snowmobilers in the state of Oregon can continue to enjoy their sport. Your membership dues makes this happen, but your participation is even more important. See you in John Day By: Peggy Spieger OSSA Executive Director The Oregon State Snowmobile Association offers our thoughts and prayers to the family of Wesley Amos of La Pine who lost his life in an avalanche January 2nd. The avalanche occurred in the Newberry Crater in an area known as the roller coaster when a 200’ wall of snow came down through the trees. Nearby snowmobilers dug him out but by the time they found him it was too late. This is not an area that is commonly thought of as high risk avalanche territory but it is a reminder that people should use caution and think about the way the weather can impact the terrain. Avalanches can be triggered by significant snowfall followed by rain or major temperatures changes creating an unstable snowpack. The Central Oregon Avalanche Association, a group formed last fall, aims to provide more information for snowmobil- ers and other winter recreationists. Be prepared – carry the essentials with you – and ALWAYS practice safe snowmobiling. Never ride alone. Be aware of other hazards that may be out there. Winter logging operations are in progress in some areas. The snow groomers may be out there as well as non motorized users such as skiers or sled dog teams. Expect the unexpected. The Grant County Snowballers, the Chamber and all the people of Grant County are looking forward to hosting the OSSA Convention in John Day. Rides start January 19th. The Board meeting will be on Friday and the General Membership meeting will be on Saturday January 23rd. There is a Friday night hospitality and the banquet on Saturday night. Also present on Saturday will be several of our snow patrol deputies from the various Sheriff’s departments. Many clubs have a lot of activities scheduled in the next couple continued on page 2 Page 2 Oregon Snowmobile News www.oregonsnow.org Central Oregon Snowbusters by Barb Allwardt HAPPY NEW YEAR to all, from the Snowbusters! The snow conditions were very poor, but over 15 members showed up to enjoy the sunny day on the prairie. Everyone in attendance enjoyed hot dogs, chili, smores and cocoa. Morrow County Grain Growers, the local Polaris Dealer, brought up two snowmobiles and gave demo rides. The beautiful weather and fun conversations made the day a success. Any one interested in becoming a member of the 4-Corners Snowmobile Club contact Mike Gorman at 541-676-9623 or Cliff Dougherty at 541-676-5491. We have a lot we need to get accomplished this year. The Cub Scouts Snow Capades are to be held at Lake of the Woods on 01-15 & 01-16, 01-22 & 01-23, and 01-29 & 01-30. This is where the Cub Scout Troops come from all over to play in the snow, do all kinds of snow activities & spend the night. Anyone that can volunteer time to help make this a success would be greatly appreciated. For more information please contact Bruce Cullen @ 541-892-5424. The Candlelighter’s event which is approaching fast will be February 02-20-10 at Lake of The Woods. This involves all District 5 clubs and we need a lot of club involvement to make it successful! It involves all kinds of activities, games including a radar run. All proceeds will go to the Candlelighter’s Cancer Children’s fund. The Snowmobile Convention is up coming in John Day on 01-1910 to 01-24-10, with the Dinner on 01-23-10. We hope to see you there! The OSAA Calendar’s are for sale & are $20.00 each. This event is used to raise needed money for our Club, the Klamath Basin Snowdrifters. We are trying to groom the trails, but finding it is very difficult, with the current level of snow. We are looking to do some grooming at Pelican Butte soon! We had a good turnout for the Medicine Lake New Years Snowmobile camp out. We were able to ride all over and found lots of fresh snow each day! Unfortunately I (Bruce Cullen) was not able to ride because the day before departing for Medicine Lake, I fell in the drive way & broke my wrist! But we still went & I was the camp host. I did get one ride in, thanks to my wife! Somehow she was able to steer my snowmobile (which was new to her) and keep me on behind, at least keep me on most of the time! All this was accomplished while maneuvering through fresh powder!! Please keep signing those Petitions for the Crater Lake Wilderness & keep writing to your representatives in expressing your opinions on this proposal. It’s extremely important that we don’t lose sight of this. A bad outcome will affect all who enjoy using our natural surroundings, now & future generations. The next General Club meeting is Tuesday 01-12-10 @ 6:00pm. Hope to see everyone at Mia’s Pia’s unless otherwise announced. Think snow! Bruce Cullen (President) Klamath Basin Snowdrifters Note from VP Jeff Ranger I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended our annual Snowdrifters Christmas Potluck! Despite the cold temperatures and icy roads, we had a great turn out. There was lots of good food, plenty of gifts and loads of laughter. We were able to dine with many of our current members as well as get to know several new members. A good time was had by all! With any luck we will be able to have a repeat at the Crab Feed later this month. January 2010 Oregon Snowmobile News www.oregonsnow.org www.ORSnowmobileNews.com Page 5 Page 6 Oregon Snowmobile News www.oregonsnow.org Panhandlers by Big Al Anybody need some extra snow?? We have been getting pounded with the stuff over here on the east side. I have been so busy with a nasty cold and plowing snow out of my driveway and other places that I have not even been for a ride yet. We had one storm that was predicted for like 4 to 8 inches the next morning that winter storm warning was canceled, then about 11:00AM it started snowing, it snowed all night ending up with 12+ inches of new, and then rain came in on it for the next 12 hours – talk about a www.ORSnowmobileNews.com January 2010 Lodgepole Dodgers mess. I sometimes wish I had a job like a weather forecaster – it wouldn’t matter if I was right or wrong. One thing about it - there should be a good base by now with the promise of much better weather ahead, YA. BOO, as I write this it is snowing again, Agahhhhhh! I never thought I would complain about too much snow. had a great turnout. Thanks goes to Mary Ann and the crew at Wild Bills that fixed up a great dinner for us. Thanks to the Panhandle Club, members that made all the arrangements and took the time to pick out door prizes for us, we all had a great time. When in town throw some business at Wild Bills as they always support our club and its functions to the max. Our December meeting was well attended and all enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner and it seems like all we could talk about was wishing that the extreme cold weather would end and we would get some snow. Did I just say that?? Yah - the cold ended after 3 weeks and did we ever get snowed on! Then it was way cold for another week then more snow and rain. It’s just typical Halfway weather wait 10 minutes and it will change. It looks like the Eagle Cap Sled Dog Race is the week of January 10th through the 15th with teams arriving in Halfway maybe late Thursday and early Friday morning on the 15th. We will be starting setup on the Halfway side on the 19th. The club is arranging for a refresher First-Aid class to take place in the first part of January it’s time for a review that’s needed to keep our search and rescue people up to date. We held our annual X-Mass party at Wild Bills & Co. and we Poker Run Presidents Day/Valentines Day on February 14 is the time to be in Halfway for our annual $4000.00 Poker Run. Sign up and first card draw will be at the Halfway Lions Club house tell noon here in Halfway. Second card at the Clear Creek Snow Park north of town and Snow Park permits will be required. That’s about it this time looking to see you on the mountain. by Sherry Larson On December 12th we held our Christmas party up at 10 Miles Snopark. A few hardy souls went out snowmobiling on skimpy snow, but all of the action was at our “house.” With a roaring fire, beautiful decorations complete with a tree and surrounded by gifts, bountiful food provided by the 40 plus attendees, it was fun, fun, fun. With prez Tammy mc’ing, gifts were handed out to those lucky enuf to hold winning tickets – 19 in all. Then we did our gift exchange, numbers 1 thru 37. No 1 got 1st choice, (Judy Bice). Everyone thereafter could exchange the gift they opened for any of those preceeding. A gift could only be exchanged 3 times. Saying something about our club, the gifts exchanged the most seemed to be homemade Kalhua, Boston Creme, etc! There were so many gifts I won’t mention them all, but in the end Judy got her choice of any gift and chose the knife (with a lot of extras) set that had passed through 2 other hands. Sadly my Santa snowblower got stolen and I got the Victoria Secret prefume which I intend on wearing. Tammy and her mom, Bev, did all of the purchasing of the door prizes and all of the wrapping. Good job ladies. On December 17th we held are Christmas Dinner at the Moose – prime rib and all the trimmings. To show our appreciation to the women of the Moose, we presented them with a check and a big Thank You. Fifty Six hungry people enjoyed the meal. Business items Check our website to find out about rides, what trails are groomed or any other club info. The 8000 maps are ready, which include the re-route of trail 80. The race is from 10AM to 2PM, and racers will keep to one side of the trail. So if you plan to ride around the lake at that time, please be aware of congestion or plan your ride to avoid the loop around the lake at that time. Unfortunately, this month’s RADAR RUN at the Crescent Lake For our club activity in February, we will be having a club ride to Elk Lake for lunch on February 6th. We will leave the Crescent Lake Junction Snow Park at 9AM. That evening at 6:30PM we will have our club meeting at KJ’S Restaurant in the Junction. Remember WE NEED YOUR HELP! 541-388-1480 EX 3# [email protected] January 2010 Oregon Snowmobile News www.oregonsnow.org Rogue Snowmobilers of Southern Oregon by Kim Greenwaldt I would like to start my letter this month by saying Thank You to everyone who voted for me as Snowmobiler of the Year. I feel like it is a real honor and you affirmed that all the work that we have been putting in during the last year was truly going in the right direction. So once again Thank You! For those of you that missed the Winter Banquet, we had a great banquet as usual. Thank you to the folks at Diamond Lake. They once again came through for us, they even provided snow! I had three great days of riding with a bunch of good friends. As for the awards. Mike Rose was the lucky recipient of the Golden Helmet, Mike please stay on the trail and stay away from the ice/lake. Leslie Bowman won the Outhouse award, the next time you see Leslie give her a thumbs up, she will know what you mean. The Groomer of the Year went to the VERY deserving Brian Watson. Thank you Brian for all of your hard work all of the time. A reminder about the OSSA convention in John Day, please register for that now. Before we go to the convention we have a Turkey fry (I will NOT be cooking) and ride on January 16th at Hamacker. Scott Downing will be doing the cooking (and the rest of the club gives thanks)Remember that we have invited CC Riders (Roseburg club) to join us this year, they will be coming via snowmobile so we may need a little extra potluck food. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the two clubs to be able to interact. Mark your Calendars for the Bailey $3000 in February and make reservations as needed. In closing I have 8 days on the snow this year so far, if you haven’t taken advantage of the great snow in the Diamond Lake and 1000 Springs areas, remember the worst day of snowmobiling is better then almost any other day. Please remember to write to your Representatives in opposition to taking public lands and locking them up to wilderness. As you will receive this after Christmas I hope each and everyone of you had a joyous and wonderful Christmas. (Thanks for your special giving to our Christmas families) I would also like to wish all A Happy New Year! See you on the SNOW!! - Dennis Jordan Rogue Snowmobilers Involved In The Community Here we are at the beginning of our season with barely enough snow to go riding, and the club has already been involved in two great community events. In the November general meeting the club voted to adopt two Christmas families to shop for who could use our help to have a Merry Christmas. The families were selected by Lisa Duncan who through her work connection was able to qualify families that truly needed our help. With the funds that the club allocated, Sheyla Hildebrand and Elysia Gabaldon spent many hours shopping (they enjoyed it) and wrapping presents for each of the families. One of the families included two children who were sleeping on the couch because they did not have beds to sleep on. When the club heard about this, several people jumped in to help find beds that could be donated to the family. Gene Bowling was able to get a set of twin beds donated and Sheyla Hildebrand donated two bedding sets so the family would not need to shop for bedding. Your club also decided to step in and purchase two bed frames to complete the set. Thank You to all the club members as the dues you pay each year just helped two families have a Merry Christmas. At the same time we were working on the Christmas family project, the club also was helping D & S Harley get toys for the Toys for Tot program. A special thank you goes out to Water World Boating Center, Central Equipment and Medford Power Sports for stepping up and having collection sites at their locations. The club also donated $200 to shop for toys which Jan Guthmiller spent time doing. Thank you to Jan, our local dealers and all the club members who helped out to make this happen. I want to say it one more time, THANK YOU to all the club members as your dues just made a difference in our local community. Brian Gabaldon December Events: Getting Out!! The season has officially started for most of us! I got my first ride in this year before Thanksgiving and it was a blast. All members of the Tollgate Trail Finders should be very proud of their club as I have never seen better events or a better group of volunteers! The month started out with free hot dogs at Bone Springs warming shelter, the riding must have been good, because I viewed a few snowmobilers working on their fourth hot dog. The next weekend a group of riders went on a ride led by Glenn Warren that took them over the Milk Shakes and down towards Blue Wood, Thanks Glenn for your time, it was much appreciated. Dec 19th was the Christmas party at the Trailfinders clubhouse, great food and a fun time had by all playing the card game 31. Dec 26th was a family ride led by Gary Woods, what a great time! The sun was shining and the snow glimmered like diamonds. Thanks Gary for the tour of Balloon Tree. Dec 27th The Radar Run at Target Meadows was a huge success. Jay and Amy Hamman put on a first class event. I’m sure at one time there were well over 100 snowmobilers watching the action. The sun was shining and the snow was almost perfect. The New Year started out as good or better then it ended. January 2nd was the the Annual Silver Run with a $1,000.00 in prize money and a chance to win a 32’’ Flat Panel TV, again the day was perfect, probably one of the best poker runs I’ve been on. Followed by great fun, great food and great fellowship with club members. Jeff Smith was the lucky club member that walked away with the TV! If you haven’t figured it out yet, Tollgate is the place to ride and the Tollgate Trail Finders is the club to be involved in! If your interested in visiting our area, go to [email protected] click on weather and scroll down to the Tollgate Trailfinders list of upcomming events and see what’s happening on the mountain. The snow is perfect (most of the time), the members are a fine bunch of folks, and the trails are well maintained by our groomers. January 2010 16th 18-23rd 19th 30th annual Christmas Tree Ride and Chili Feed. This is the first time for me that we have had snow for this event. After dodging a few four wheel drives, we headed up to high country to find the perfect trees and perfect snow. I thought we might have to call in a helicopter logger to pull Rene’s tree out but he got it down the mountain on his own! Afterwards we all hung out and visited while enjoying Lynette’s famous chili. Thanks to Lynette and family for providing us with this awesome meal! Next up was the Christmas Banquet weekend. There was plenty of snow for riding all weekend. I saw plenty of stuck sleds with happy, grinning riders! And just because I don’t have a picture doesn’t mean you got away with it (Jeff Hoxsey)!! As always, Lori Jordan and Diamond Lake did an awesome job with the banquet and the food was absolutely delicious. Thank you Lori!! This was followed up by plenty of prizes and awards. This year’s award winners were: Golden Helmet: Mike Rose, Outhouse Award: Leslie Bowman, Groomer of the Year: Brian Watson and Snowmobiler of the Year: Dennis Jordan. Be sure to ask Mike and Leslie what they did to win those awards! And keep your eyes open for future winners this season. Be sure to thank our local dealers for their generous donation of prizes as well as Pacific Diamond Jewelers, Cascade Glass Carving and Bob Guthmiller Repair. The banquet was followed by more riding on Sunday as our Snowmobiler of the Year abandoned half his group (the women, children and old men) to fend for themselves, lost and alone in the wilderness…..way to go Mr. President!!!!! There are lots of fun events coming up in January so be sure to check the schedule to join in the fun including a Rose Bowl Party on the 1st!
