Principal’s Report
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND THANK YOU!
As Principal of Vermont Secondary College I
would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank
our students, staff (teaching and Education
Support), parents and guardians for their ongoing
commitment to our education program and to the
numerous co-curricular programs, many of which
have been highlighted in the weekly newsletter
throughout 2012.
2013 will see the implementation of our new
Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016 which, once finalised,
will be available on the College website.
Throughout 2012, along with community
consultation, we have been developing our new
Strategic Plan. I thank all that have been involved
in this review process and look forward to further
consolidating Vermont Secondary College as an
outstanding school while continuing to implement
refinements which will assist us to further improve
learning outcomes for students.
As always with the writing of the 2013 Annual
Implementation Plan (AIP) and in line with our
four year College Strategic Plan, we will continue
to review our learning and teaching approaches to
ensure that our students have maximum
opportunities to achieve to the best of their ability.
I would like to thank the parents and staff on the
College Council for all their advice and support
throughout 2012. In particular I would like to
acknowledge Mark Swiney, Council President
and Sandra Green, Vice President for all their
work and strong support of the College. Thank
you also to the College community - I am always
extremely appreciative of the hard work,
commitment, dedication and skills of our College
community that assist so much, and so readily, in
supporting such a large educational institution.
Finally a reminder about a few crucial dates for
the start of the 2013 school year:

FINAL VERMONT COLLEGE NEWS FOR 2012
Thank you to all contributors to our weekly
newsletter during the 2012 school year. The
College newsletter is a vital link with students and
parents to ensure that the community is well
informed about College events. The newsletter is
vital in ensuring that the many activities and
events involving our students are publicised and
celebrated.
Our Newsletter, including back copies, is
available on our website. If you prefer the VSC
Newsletter can be emailed to you and you can
sign up for this via the College website. For many
parents this is a more reliable way of receiving the
Newsletter and ensures you receive it on time
rather than it being lost in the bottom of the school
bag!
We welcome feedback about the Vermont
College News as well as ideas for improvement.
We encourage you to let us know of any
newsworthy events in 2013 where students have
achieved outside of the school as well as within
the College. Finally, a special thank you to Jan
Hindmarsh, Kay Clements, Monika Ridley and

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX MORGAN
Cycling - 2013 Oceania Track Championships - Wednesday 28
November 2012
Australia have cleaned up on the opening night of the 2013 Oceania
Track Championships winning eight of a possible 12 gold medals up
for grabs at the Adelaide Super-Drome. In the men’s pursuit team the
Australian quartet of Miles Scotson (SA), Alexander Morgan (VIC),
Mitchell Mulhern (QLD) and newly crowned Subaru National Road
Series winner Luke Davison (SA) posted a time of 4:02.106 to claim
gold over New Zealand’s Cameron Karwowski, Dylan Kennett,
Hayden McCormick and Pieter bulling who finished in 4:10.324 with
silver.
"This win is a great stepping stone for us as a group," said Victoria's
Alex Morgan, who claimed the team pursuit junior world title in August
with Scotson, Jack Cummings and Tirian McManus.
Just prior to the race, London Olympian Alex Edmondson was forced
to withdraw after being struck with food poisoning on the eve of the
championships. Despite the loss, the newly formed team looked very
much the part on the track as they powered to the title.
"Like the women it's the first time we have raced together and we had
a good smooth ride coming in at 4.02 - that is just fantastic,” Morgan
added.
Cycling - 2013 Oceania Track Championships - Thursday 29
November 2012
Australia's dominance on the track continued with all seven gold
medals going to the home team on day two of the 2013 Oceania Track
Championships at the Adelaide Super-Drome.
In the men’s individual pursuit it was senior debutant Alex Morgan
(VIC) who claimed his second gold for the event.
Morgan took the men’s individual pursuit title (4:22:783) over New
South Welshman Caleb Ewan (4:23:200) and Queensland’s Mitchell
Mulhurn (4:25:056), in what he describes as a milestone win in his
career.
"This was an extremely important win for me - getting one against
Caleb (Ewan) is a big ask,” said Morgan following his win in the men’s
team pursuit on the opening night of the championships. "I wasn't sure
how I would perform as I have done a lot of racing in the past two
days, but after my warm up I felt ready. It was pretty much head down
and go as hard as I could, I just ignored Caleb and half way through
the race I couldn't even look at the clock. I knew I had to just keep
pushing to get the result and I couldn’t’ be happier right now,” the
junior world champion said.
These two races are exceptional results for Alex winning for the first
time in the men’s open division. Well done Alex on a fantastic
achievement!

VSC SPORTS REPORT
VSC MUSIC NEWS
On Thursday 22 November the Year 8 Boys Cricket team travelled to
Officer to play against McKinnon College in the State Semi Final.
We lost the toss and were sent out to field. Our opening bowler Damien Tuvey bowled well and took 2 wickets. Ben Joseph our second
change bowler came on and took two quick wickets. At the end of the
innings the opposition made 137 and we were in for a big run chase.
Our opening batsmen Ben Joseph and Matt Stewart got us off to a
good start and we were no wicket down after 10 overs and had managed about 45 runs. In the 12th over Stewie was cleaned up with a
good ball and was out for a very solid 38. In came Aristotle Papailiadis and we needed to get a bit of a wriggle on if we wanted to win
this one. Unfortunately for Ari he was gone for a duck. I then came
out to the middle to join Benny and he was gone within an over with a
score of 13 runs. I was then joined by Jackie Breteler and we put on
a solid 20 before he was out. Then in came the man who hadn’t
scored a run in 4 games - Matt Sevior. He came in in the last over
and we needed a whopping 34 runs. I said to him " Matt make sure we
don’t go out and we are still here at the end." So on the second ball of
the over I got caught behind for 16 and Matt finished the game 2 not
out and let me know about it at the end of the game. In the end I think
we were about 20 runs short.
Well done to the boys for getting through to the finals two years in a
row. Thank you to Michael Downes and "THE" Konrad Bendrups
for assisting with the coaching. Billo for driving the bus down the highway and being a good mascot.
But on behalf of the Year 8 Boys Cricket team we would like to thank
Mr Henderson (Hendo) for taking us to State two years in a row.

University of New South Wales
ICAS Competitions
Earlier this year some of our keen English students completed the University of New South Wales ICAS English, Writing and Spelling
competitions. Our students achieved excellent results across all three competitions. Out of 198 participants, 66 received credits (top 15
percent), 44 received distinctions (top 10 percent) and 12 received high distinctions (top 1 percent). Some students achieved these
fantastic results across two or even three of the competitions.
In particular, Arman Riazati of Year 8 and Dedry Erng of Year 9 are to be congratulated. These students were awarded the UNSW
Medals for their year level in the Writing Competition. This is an outstanding result which means that they achieved the highest score in
the State – truly remarkable. It is important to note that we have never had multiple medal winners across two year levels before so it
really is a demonstration of the high calibre students who attend VSC.
The students receiving distinctions and high distinctions attended a celebratory luncheon during which they were acknowledged for their
achievements.
Due to high number of certificates, all were handed out by classroom English teachers in the last week.
You should all be very proud of your achievements in the competitions and we look forward to some more fantastic results next year.
Congratulations!

2012 ICAS STATE CHAMPIONS
It was with greatest pleasure that I had the privilege of attending this year’s ICAS Medal
Presentation Ceremony on Saturday 24 November to see three of our students awarded with
medals for attaining the highest score in the State at their year level in the International
Competitions and Assessments for Schools conducted by the University of New South Wales.
The venue was abuzz with excitement as proud parents and teachers celebrated with the students
their success.
Sixty seven Victorian students were awarded medals in the competitions this year. Arman Riazati
(Year 8) and Dedrey Erng (Year 9) both received medals for the Writing Competition. Alwin
Wang (Year 11) received a medal for the Mathematics Competition. Alwin was also
acknowledged on the day as being one of 16 recipients this year to have been awarded a medal in
a previous year.
Arman Riazati, Alwin Wang and Dedrey Erng
On behalf of the Vermont Secondary School community, I would like to congratulate
Arman, Dedrey and Alwin on their outstanding achievements.

CHALLENGE FOR YOUNG
AUSTRALIANS
The Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians is a major
problem solving event run by the Australian Mathematics Trust
whose mission is to enable students to achieve their full potential
in mathematics. It provides an opportunity for talented students
and other students who enjoy mathematics, to meet the challenge
of a number of in-depth yet accessible problems and to develop
their problem solving skills.
Students that accept to do the Challenge are given 3 weeks to
solve 6 mathematical problems. To achieve success students
must demonstrate higher order thinking skills and be able to
communicate their results in both a logical and mathematical
sense. Twelve students from Vermont Secondary College took up
the Challenge this year.
Alex Niehof (Year 9), Jakob Smith (Year 9) and Dmitry
Kulshitsky (Year 10) received High Distinctions. Both Alex and
Jakob presented solutions that attained perfect scores. Michael
Leask (Year 9) received a Distinction, whilst Stephen Bottrell
(Year 8) and Zi-En Tan (Year 8) received Credit Certificates.
REAL MATHS IN ACTION DAY
Fifteen of our senior mathematics students attended the Real
Maths in Action Day. The event is hosted by The University of
Melbourne once every two years. Whilst two teams competed in
the Mathematics in Industry and Technology Challenge which
involved solving an optimisation problem, the other two teams
competed in the Short Problem Solving Competition.
Congratulations to Edmund Cheng, Dmitry Kulshitsky, Jayden
MacDowell and Allen Ving in placing first in this statewide
competition.
