MESSAGE FROM GOVERNING BOARD

Dear Temple Members
As of January 1, 2010 no member from this congregation has stepped forward to serve as a member on
the official Board of Directors. A group of interested and concerned members have decided to form a
Governing Board to oversee and ensure that the interests of Cuban Hebrew Congregation are well
represented and protected. We are looking forward to a wonderful year with new programs and new
directions that will lead us to the celebration of our 50th Anniversary.

Salomon Klein Student Leadership Scholarship Fund
We would like to remind our members that this fund was created and donated by Salomon Klein for
the purpose of providing funds for the educational needs of a student to further his/her studies in the
State of Israel. This fund is available on a yearly basis and the recipient must express a desire to
spend time studying in the State of Israel by writing an essay and filling out an application. Funding
is limited to children or grandchildren of members in good standing of Temple Beth Shmuel - Cuban
Hebrew Congregation.
This essay and application must be submitted at the beginning of each calendar year. (Exception is
being made this year as we had not printed this information prior to this publication). The essay
must contain the following information:
1. Applicant must submit a program in Israel where he/she will study, with a list of subjects to be
studied and the length of stay in Israel.
2. Applicant must state how the program in which he/she will participate will foster a greater
awareness of Jewish life and Israel, and what the applicant hopes to gain from his/her study.
3. Applicant must state what commitment, if any, will be made to his/her community upon return to
the United States.
The Board of Directors will consider all applications received and will make a decision before the
summer. All applications and essay must be mailed to our offices at:
Temple Beth Shmuel - Cuban Hebrew Congregation, 1700 Michigan Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida

Mah nish tanah ha’seder
ha’zeh?
Why is this seder
different from all the other
seders?
Do you want your guests
leaving your seder wanting
more? Here are a few tips to
enhance your Passover meal:
1) First of all, remember this: Your Passover
seder is not like the other 363 dinners you eat
during the year. A seder is a special meal
in which we reconnect with our Jewish past. It is
a meal full of conversation dealing with
theological, philosophical, and Jewish matters.
Therefore, so as not to have your guests
“chomping at the bit” for the matzah ball soup,
put hors d’oeuvres out on the table – like nuts,
raisins, dips, vegetables. Allow your guests to
nosh!
2) When you break the middle matzah, one half
you put back on the plate, while the other half,
known as the afikomen, is hidden. For the
seder to come to an end, the afikomen must be
found and put “back together” with its other half
– what was once broken must be made whole
again! A great discussion question could be:
What can we do to fix a broken world?
like to recommend these two books that will
serve as excellent resources, and yes, they are
available on line or at your nearest bookstore:
a) Creating Lively Passover Seders
published by Jewish Lights Publishing
b) A Different Night Haggadah, as well as The
Leaders Guide to A Different Night
Haggadah - both published by Shalom
Harman Institute
**just a note, this Haggadah is filled with
activities, stories, and discussion points. It will
give you and your guests material for years to
come. I highly recommend this Haggadah.
Please, get rid of the Maxwell House Haggadah!
Please call or email me if you have any
questions.
May you and your family have a wonderful
Passover!
Rabbi Richard S. Chizever

3) Four Children: wise, wicked, simple, & one
that doesn’t know how to ask the question.
These four children are all stages of maturation.
Or, the four stages of American Jewry. The
characteristics of these children are great
starting points for discussion.
4) Ten Plagues: You can ask, “If God is
omnipotent (all powerful), why does God need
ten plagues (one would have been sufficient)?
Or if you have children at the table, write out the
ten plagues on ten separate cards. Place them
in a bag and have the children randomly pick
out a card and act out that plague. Let the other
guests guess the plague!
Millefiori produces fragrances for
i nteri ors . Ov er 40 di ffer ent,
delicious fragrances, selected from
the best Italian and French
perfume makers.
5) Elijah’s cup. A great tradition for filling
Elijah’s cup is having everyone pour a little bit of
their wine into his cup. Why? Because all of us
have a part in bringing about the coming of
Elijah – the prophet who announces the
messiah. A great question to ask is, “What can
we do to bring about the messianic era? Or
how can we make the world a better place
(tikkun olam)?
These are just a few ideas to get the
conversation flowing. Additionally, I would also

MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Message from the School Committee
Dear Temple Beth Shmuel Family:
Our school year is quickly coming to an end and we’re proud to say that our children have learned and
grown so much. During the school year, we’ve had many important and successful events, our biggest
being our school Purim Carnival. We had a lot of fun and raised a nice amount of money as well.
We also had many wonderful Mitzvah projects such as Jumpin’ for Justin in which we raised money for
Pediatric Cancer, we had a clothing and food drive for Haiti, and we are currently having a Kosher
Passover Food Drive to name a few.
We are getting ready for summer camp and are also planning a Family Shabbat dinner with the temple
on April 16th at 6:15 p.m. We hope that many of you will join us.
We look forward to Passover vacation and want to wish you and your families a happy Pesach.

WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Message from the Women’s League
We are preparing our homes for Passover and
as we do every year, we are thinking of those
who are less fortunate and cannot afford to have
a Passover table full of food and wine at their
homes. We have mailed out hundreds of dollars
in gift cards to those families in our community
who need it most. As we gather at shul for
services in the upcoming holiday, we need to
thank G_d for our good fortunes and good
health and nice families and always try to instill
Tzedaka as a part of our Jewish lives.
Next month, we will be celebrating Israel’s 62nd
Independence Day with a Kabbalat Shabbat
together with the Montessori School in our
beautiful sanctuary. We would love to have
everyone in our congregation join in the
celebration.
There will be Oneg Shabbat
Services followed by a dinner and music.
Please try to attend and call the office to make
your advance reservations. There will be a
charge for the dinner.
During the month of May, we will be holding our
Annual Women’s League Luncheon in our
cocktail room. It will be a wonderful get-together
of women, schmoozing and eating and having
fun. Our annual raffle will be held that day.
by Tere Ben-Hain
Please send in your raffle ticket books with your
check as soon as you receive them in the mail.
We have great prizes this year again.
Also, we would like to invite everyone in the
community and especially the Mothers and
Fathers in our congregation to come and join us
during our Special Shabbat Services honoring
Mothers and Fathers on their day. That will be
happening on Saturday, May 8th and Saturday,
June 19th. A special program is being planned
for those days by our Event Chairperson, Tete
Wenguer. She works hard and comes through
with flying colors.
Women’s League or Sisterhood in every Jewish
Congregation throughout the United States is
actively seeking new members and new ideas to
continue their important work in the betterment
of their House of Worship. We, at Temple Beth
Shmuel – Cuban Hebrew Congregation, are
doing just that. We would like to recruit all the
women who are members of our Congregation
to come and join us as volunteers to work
with us and to help us prepare all these
events throughout the year. Your support and
cooperation is greatly needed. Stand up and
be counted!
Look out in the mail for our raffle ticket books soon.
We have a list of great prizes this year and would like all of you to
purchase tickets. Send your stubs with your checks payable to
Women’s League as soon as possible to the office.
The raffle will be held at our Annual Luncheon on May 25th.
You need not be present to win.

THE VALUE OF AN OPINION
On March 9th of this year, at
the time that US Vice-President,
Mr. Joe Biden, was on a
five-day visiting mission to
Israel and two days after
agreeing to indirect talks with
the Palestinian Authority, Israel
announced the approval for the
construction of 1,600 new
homes in East Jerusalem.
This announcement has
provided the enemies of the
State of Israel with enough
ammunition to continue their
attack and even friendly people
in the media have considered
the coincidence with the visit by
Mr. Biden as “irresponsible” or
an “insult”, a “slap in the face”
both to the Vice-President as
well as to the United States. On
Sunday, in an article in the New
York Times, Mr. Tom Friedman,
a friend of Israel, wrote that
Mr. Biden, rather than
continuing with his scheduled
visit with Mr. Netanyahu, should
have turned around and
gone back to his plane and
return to the U.S. in order to
teach the Israelis a lesson.
Also, Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton, did not mince
words for her strong
condemnation
of
the
announcement and “demanded”
cancellation of the project at
Ramat Shlomo in East
Jerusalem. All critics seem to
have either forgotten or
discounted Israel’s assertion
that Jerusalem is the State
Capital, that will always remain
by Salomon Gold
undivided and that everyone of
its citizens, either Jew or Arab,
can build anywhere in the city.
principle of coming out with the
news first and finding the facts
later.
But what do we, who mostly
know what little we know by
reading or listening to the news,
think about this whole incident?
What is our opinion? Did Israel
do wrong? Do we have enough
facts to formulate a correct
and balanced opinion? Do we
have the right to formulate an
opinion?
We have to trust the wisdom of
the Israeli government, for they
know, they have to know better
than we do, better than all
newspaper writers, news
anchors or news sources know,
of what is best for the State of
Israel. And we have to trust and
support their actions and realize
that until we have all the facts
and until we live in the State of
Israel, we have no right to have,
much less to express an
opinion. You may argue that
you have such right and you
might be right. But I think you
don’t. And that is my opinion.
The truth is that we form our
opinion based on what we read
on the news or watch in our
TVs. We have learned to
recognize the friends and the
enemies of Israel and therefore,
value and trust some opinions
better than others. But just as
we may lack full knowledge of
all facts that prompted, as in
this case, Israel to make such
decision and to announce it
when and how they did, for
most part neither does the
media, who is guided with the
But I do have the right to be
offended by Mrs. Clinton's
“demand” towards a sovereign
nation, the only democratic
nation in the Middle East, as is
the State of Israel. One does
not make demands from a loyal
friend.

LA LECCIÓN DE ISRAEL
El anuncio de una agencia
israelí de que se ampliaban los
asentamientos judíos en
Jerusalén Oriental, el mismo
día de la visita al país del
vicepresidente de EE.UU.
Joe Biden, ha sido traducida
por muchos como una
deliberada zancadilla de los
judíos a la mediación
norteamericana y, en particular,
a los esfuerzos del gobierno de
Obama de querer anotarse el
triunfo de un arreglo de paz en
el Oriente Medio. Aunque un
ministro de Israel se excusó por
la extemporaneidad del anuncio
e insistió en que no tenía
ninguna relación con la visita
del vicepresidente, casi nadie
se lo ha creído. Son demasiado
inteligentes y astutos los
israelíes para un acto fallido tan
notorio. Se trata de una
humillación a postas al petulante del Sr. Biden, y tal vez
merecida.
representantes electos apoyan
desde hace años la anexión
formal de la Ciudad Santa y su
designación como capital del
Estado de Israel, hasta el punto
de que el 10 de junio de 1997,
la Cámara aprobó (406 votos
a favor y 17 en contra) el
reconocimiento de Jerusalén
como capital de Israel, así
como la asignación de 100
millones de dólares para el
traslado de la embajada de
Estados Unidos que estaba y,
casi trece años más tarde,
sigue estando, en Tel Aviv.
Sin embargo, ni el presidente
Clinton, ni más tarde el
presidente Bush (a pesar de
sus promesas electorales) ni
mucho menos Obama han
dado los pasos necesarios para
llevar a cabo este mandato
popular. El temor a disgustar
a los árabes ha pesado
más y las consecuencias son
lamentables.
El pobre Obama --ya es hora
de empezar a compadecerlo-- a

bien las cosas (con la posible
excepción del conflicto afgano)

todo parece encaminado, ¡zas!,
los últimos se sacan de la
manga una gigantesca
urbanización en Jerusalén
Oriental como para que nadie
ponga en duda --ni los árabes,
ni los americanos, ni la Unión
Europea-- a quien pertenece la
ciudad ni la falta de disposición
de parte del Estado judío para
negociar sobre su estatus.
Winston Churchill, en una
carta al diplomático Evelyn
Shuckburgh, le decía: ``Debes
dejar que los judíos se queden
con Jerusalén; fueron ellos
quienes la hicieron famosa''. La
razón del estadista inglés, que
no dudo en compartir, es
menos superficial de lo que
podría parecer: se afinca en lo
que bien podría llamarse la
estética de la historia. La
ciudadela de los jebuseos, que
el rey David convirtiera en su
capital un milenio antes de
nacer Cristo, adquirió una
definitiva identidad judía para
todos los que somos herederos
y deudores de esa cultura. Para
los cristianos, Jerusalén fue y
ha sido la metáfora del orden
divino que habría de
instaurarse al final de los
tiempos. Para los judíos fue el
mantra en torno al cual se
conservó, de generación en
generación, a lo largo de un
destierro de siglos, su
aspiración a la soberanía
El gobierno de Estados Unidos
se tiene bien ganada esta
humillación por inconsecuente,
por haber vacilado, más de una
vez, en su política respecto al
estatus de Jerusalén, a pesar
de que la mayoría de nosotros

nacional. Los judíos no sólo
hicieron de Jerusalén una
legendaria ciudad del
mundo antiguo, sino que la
consagraron, en su diáspora,
como la concreción de
una cultura y de una fe y,
ciertamente, de un amor al que
han permanecido fieles a través
de los tiempos. Como bien
dijeran León y Jill Uris, se trata
de ``la más larga y más
profunda aventura amorosa de
la historia''.
Acaso es tarde para corregir los
errores de la partición británica
en esa región del mundo, que
pudo haber creado un hogar
palestino en el actual reino de
Jordania y haber dejado en
manos judías todo el territorio
que alguna vez fuera el Israel
histórico. Eso habría sido más
lógico y, a la postre, menos
traumático. Ya no parece
posible, pero sí lo es el evitar
que una de las ciudades más
emblemáticas de la tierra
vuelva a ser víctima de una
partición, de suyo explosiva,
que sólo contribuiría a hacerla
un sitio más peligroso y menos
habitable.
Al gobierno israelí le tocaría
afirmar, con toda la firmeza y
claridad que sean necesarias,
que Jerusalén está fuera de
cualquier negociación presente
y futura con los palestinos, así
como al gobierno de EE.UU. le
correspondería respaldar
esa posición que es la más
acorde con los deseos del
pueblo norteamericano. Las
conversaciones de paz podrían
quedar entonces, por extraño
que parezca, sobre un terreno
más firme. Entre tanto, la
humillación de Biden debe
entenderse como una merecida
lección.

MA OT CHITTIN AT YOUR SEDER
The Seder begins with the following declaration:
“LET ALL WHO ARE HUNGRY COME IN AND EAT WITH US.”
This is recited when our door is closed and no one can hear our invitation to the poor.
So, why do we make a mockery at the very start of the Seder?
This question was asked in the 9th century to Gaon Nutranai (leader of the Babylonian
Jewish community).
He replied that originally this declaration was publicly made in the market place and in
synagogues when there were peaceful relations between Jews and non-Jews.
However, when pogroms, expulsions, and inquisitions increased, the custom of public
invitations to a Seder ceased.
Ma-ot Chittin -- literally money for wheat -- was established to assure that the poor will
have Pesach food and ample wine to celebrate their Seder.
Thus Ma-ot Chittin has become a treasured custom from the earliest days of Jewish
history.
MA-OT CHITTIN
THERE ARE POOR JEWS IN OUR AREA.
THERE ARE POOR JEWS IN ISRAEL…
BY CONTRIBUTING TO THE MA-OT CHITTIN FUND, YOU WILL
SHARE IN THE MITZVAH OF ENABLING THE POOR JEWS TO
BUY FOOD AND WINE.
THEY, TOO, WILL HAVE A HAPPY AND KOSHER PESACH.
