MAYORAL MESSAGE
2014 ORANGE SHOW
It is tremendous to see Orange’ s Annual Show roll around again and for the Showground
to once again become a scene of busy activity and fantastic displays.
From livestock to cakes and the art of school children, the annual Show provides an
important venue for healthy competition as well as a window into the life of many very
different aspects of our community.
During the last twelve months, Orange City Council has reached an agreement with the
Show Society which will guide the future development of the Showground and ensure its
important buildings are maintained. I am looking forward to this partnership continuing to
develop into the future.
I congratulate the members of the Orange Show Society and all the many volunteers who
contribute to making the event so successful.

PRESIDENT MESSAGE
142 ORANGE SHOW
The members of the Orange Show Society are excited and
encouraged by the new working relationship with Orange
City Council. The old dead of covernant has been replaced
by the heads of agreement and we are looking forward to
improvements and new inferstructure at the show ground.
The first task being undertaken is the outside of all the
pavilions will be painted green and cream by showtime this
year. Talks are underway to build a multi purpose pavilion
meassuring 80 by 40 metres. The position that the pavilion
will be built is near the Phillip St side of the show ground
where the old stables used to be.
We also have a new secretary this year. Marg Kennedy has been mostly seen around
the cattle pavilions in recent years and has decided to take on this new challenge. We
also welcome 2 new chief stewards to the show. Kristene Smith is the new vegetable
steward and Harold Munroe will be chief stewarding in the cattle arena. We welcome
them all and know they will do a fantastic job.
This year the show falls on Mothers Day. So I would like to wish all the Mothers and
Grandmothers a happy day. Its a special day best spent with family and friends. In
August last year I became a Grandpop for the first time to a wonderful baby named
Addison Jane. She reminds me everyday of the wonder in a child and the joy they
bring to us.
The attractions this year include The Brophy Circus. They are famous for the wheel of
steel which needs to be seen to be believed. This is the first time the circus has been to
town. The RFS will be doing a fire display before the fire works on Saturday night.
This display will demomstrate the skills and methods used to put out a fire on a car
wreck.
As the arts and crafts section was moved to a larger area last year we have decided to
utalise the area near the secretaries office as a memorbillia area. All the trophies,
photos and ribbons from past have been displayed for all to see. We would appreciate
any donations that you have to add to our display. Next door we have Sue from the
Orange Historical Society with a wonderfull area to take you back in time.
We are also very lucky to have a backdrop from this years Royal Easter Show
depicting the local firefighters in action. They are always exceptional pieces of art
work. The showman guild will be here in force, so try a new ride. So we have
something new and something traditional this year, something for everyone.
I would like to thank all the many people who help in so many ways to make our
show work so well and the be the great success that it is every year.
Thank you.
Peter Naylor
President.

Sample Test – a test of a sample of a flock, in
accordance with the Sheep Market Assurance
Program (SheepMAP) guidelines, and which is
undertaken within the flock’s SheepMAP program.
The number of Sample Tests is the actual number of
negative Sample Tests that contributed to the flock’s
SheepMAP status.
EXPLANATORY NOTES
Approved Vaccinate – a sheep that is
• vaccinated with an approved OJD vaccine by
16 weeks of age; or
• vaccinated with an approved OJD vaccine after
16 weeks of age where, in the written opinion of
a SheepMAP approved veterinarian,
vaccination occurred when there was a low risk
of prior exposure to OJD and is identified as an
approved Vaccinate by an NLIS ‘V’ tag.
Second generation Approved Vaccinate flock – A
flock comprising entirely Approved Vaccinates (except
terminal ‘T-tag’ lambs) which were born when the
whole flock (except terminal ‘T-tag’ lambs) were
Approved Vaccinates.
Abattoir 500 status – at least 500 sheep, over 2
years of age, have been submitted to an abattoir in
the past 24 months, in 1 or more lots, and have been
examined and all found negative for OJD. The sheep
must have been on the property for at least 2 years.
SheepMAP – the Australian Johne’s Disease Market
Assurance Program for Sheep coordinated by Animal
Health Australia.
SheepMAP approved veterinarian – you can search
for SheepMAP vets in your area at
www.animalhealthaustralia.com.au
Abattoir 150 status – at least 150 sheep, over 2
years of age, have been submitted to an abattoir in
the past 12 months, in 1 or more lots, and have been
examined and all found negative for OJD. The sheep
must have been on the property for at least 2 years.
Suspected to be infected flock – a flock is
suspected to be infected with OJD if the owner has
reasonable grounds to believe that it has been
exposed to OJD infection or that OJD may exist in the
flock, based on based on:
• trace back or trace forward contact with an
infected flock;
• contact with OJD contaminated land or
facilities;
• a positive Johne’s disease screening test;
• the flock neighbours an infected flock;
• the flock has introduced sheep with an ABC
score of 0;
• clinical signs of OJD; or
• advice from the relevant state agricultural
department AND the flock has not met the
requirements for resolution of suspicion.
Certified low risk sheep – sheep which are sourced
from a flock that is infected or suspected to be
infected with OJD, and which are certified in writing as
low-risk by a SheepMAP approved veterinarian on the
basis of:
• a risk assessment, and
• an approved Property Disease Management
Program (PDMP) that includes profiling and
strategic culling, being implemented in the
flock. Other strategies such as vaccination of
sheep which are unlikely to have been heavily
exposed may also be appropriate.
Infected flocks – flocks are no longer regarded as
infected when either: (1) the whole flock consists of
approved vaccinates and has undertaken a PFC 350
test, with negative results, at a minimum of 2 years
after the last detected infected animal has been
removed; OR (2) the whole flock is a second
generation approved vaccinate flock which has
undertaken a PFC 350 test, with negative results; OR
(3) a destocking/decontamination program approved
by the CVO of the jurisdiction, has been completed.
Terminal ‘T’ tag lambs – lambs which are to be
slaughtered before they cut their first permanent teeth
and are identified by an NLIS (sheep) ‘T’ tag.
Tested low level Infected flock – an infected flock
which has a history supporting a low level of infection,
an approved Property Disease Management Program
in place, and the most recent flock profile
demonstrating a detection rate of not more that 1 of 7
pools by Pooled Faecal Culture within the previous 2
years. Sheep mobs that contributed to the positive
pool are not eligible for this point.
Prevalence area – There are three Prevalence
Areas: Low, Medium and High. These have been
agreed nationally and are reviewed annually. Details
are available from Animal Health Australia or
www.ojd.com.au
PFC 350 test – a test of 350 representative sheep
over 2 years of age (or all sheep over 2 years of age
in smaller flocks) by Pooled Faecal Culture in pools of
up to 50 sheep.
Although vendors of non-slaughter sheep are
encouraged to complete all sections of the Sheep
Health Statement, legislative requirements vary
between the states. For further information, please
contact your local agricultural department or visit

HINTS & TIPS ON EXHIBITING VEGETABLES:
- It is important that the fruit or vegetable has reached maturity perhaps more
important that it has not past its peak.
- Most fruit and vegetables are best picked on the same day that they will be
judged. This is particularly important with leaf vegetables such as silver beet
as they will wilt quickly.
- Some fruit and vegetables such as onions and pumpkins can be picked when
they are at their best and stored for the show if handled properly.
- When choosing which fruit or vegetables to show remember a good, even
colour that is true to the variety and without blemishes is important.
- For classes where more than one of the same variety is required try to choose
fruit or vegetables with uniform size, shape and colour.
- Stating the name of the variety of fruit or vegetable you have grown is an
advantage as each variety has individual characteristics. Think of the
difference between a Jap and a QLD blue pumpkin or the difference between a
Granny Smith and a Jonathan apple.
OPEN CLASSES:
Open to all individuals and groups
If the variety of an exhibit is unknown, entry will still be accepted to classes
requesting a named variety. Naming the variety is an advantage in classes that
request you to do so.
