During the course of the night, Richard Forgason
of J.D. Hudgins, Inc., along with others, mentioned the
Brahman clinics of yesteryear, and how they were excited
to see the tradition brought back.
On Saturday morning, convention attendees were
treated to a delicious breakfast bar, and at 8 a.m. a general
session was led by Dr. Jim Sanders, professor of Animal
Science at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Sanders gave a fascinating presentation on the
History and Development of the American Brahman
Breed, where he traced the early importations of cattle
from India to North America. He highlighted the trade
routes and areas of India where the different types of
Bos indicus cattle were purchased. He also discussed the
breeders and bloodlines that were instrumental in the
foundation of both Red Brahman and Gray Brahman cattle.
Following the general assembly, attendees had their
choice of breakout convention workshops, which featured
panels of industry leaders and specialists who shared
their expertise and insights during the presentations.
The breakout sessions covered topics including:
ABBA Member Programs; Overview of Ranch
Management Practices; Marketing Opportunities
both Foreign and Domestic; Overview of ABBA
Performance Programs; Feeding and Development of
Brahman Cattle; Procedures for Collecting, Shipping
and Marketing Semen; Opportunities Available to
better Promote your Cattle; and New Technologies in
the Beef Industry.
"We found the workshops to be very informative
and educational,” Bill and Connie Nettles of Summit,
Mississippi said.
In the interest of informing members of the latest
ABBA programs and projects, the workshop sessions
concluded with ABBA Committee reports. Members
heard from Committee Chairmen who gave reports on the
various activities and projects that each of their respective
committees are working on and invited everyone to
become more actively involved in the association.
"I was a little apprehensive about attending the
convention because I'm a new member and didn't know
anyone - but I am glad we decided to attend,” Rebecca
Benally of Montezuma Creek, Utah said. “My daughter
and I truly enjoyed the convention. Everyone was very
friendly and kind.”
The Convention events concluded with a banquet,
where sponsors were recognized and presented with
specially commissioned bottles of wine with the ABBA
Convention logo.
The Keynote speaker, Aaron Alejandro, Executive
Director of Texas FFA Foundation literally left everyone
with food for thought at the Closing Banquet. He gave an
informative presentation on the future of the agriculture
industry and alarming statistics that left everyone in awe
of what the future could hold if we do not become more
actively involved in agriculture affairs and laws.
"I have attended hundreds of conventions and trade
shows during my lifetime, and I commend you, because
this is definitely one of the best conventions I have ever
attended,” Carl Rugg of Bovine Elite said.
Bob Hudgins explained that this is the first modern
ABBA membership convention, but hopefully not the
last. He expressed that the ABBA would like to pass the
convention around to different states in the future, and
he hopes another state steps up and plans one in 2012.

as well as expand the marketing of Brahman
influenced cattle into other areas based on
their needs.
It goes without saying that the Brahman
breed is truly a global breed and ABBA
understands the importance of promoting
the breed around the world as well as assisting
our fellow breeders in these countries. The
ABBA International Committee is renowned
for doing an outstanding job of promoting
the breed globally. Just as in the past, this
committee has represented ABBA at a number
of events by taking delegations of ABBA
members, presenting awards, providing judges
and speakers as well as sponsoring receptions,
having display booths, and promoting through
ads in international publications. Although it
might seem glamorous to travel abroad
and look at Brahman cattle, which many
times it is, this committee really works
hard at promoting the breed and inviting
interested parties to attend events in the
USA. The International Committee does
a great job and has some new and exciting
ideas to better facilitate the relations
between ABBA members and breeders in
other countries.
Last but certainly not least is the Youth
Activities Committee. This committee is
charged with the duty of overseeing the
American Junior Brahman Association
and its many activities. This year the
All American was held in Ft. Smith,
Arkansas, and just like the previous
shows it was a great event with a large
attendance and over $50,000 in prizes
and awards being given away to deserving
young people. The Youth Activities
Committee has taken a critical look at the
All American and the contests associated
with this activity. The committee has
revised the rules as well as changed up
the host responsibilities placing more of
these responsibilities back on the AJBA
staff. The objective of this is to create
more consistency in all elements of the
All American. The recently adopted
rules will become effective immediately
while the AJBA taking over the hosting
responsibilities will take place beginning
in 2013 when a two venue rotation will
begin between Lufkin, Texas and West
Monroe, Louisiana.
As you can see 2011 has been a busy,
beneficial, and productive year for
ABBA, and you might ask what does the
crystal ball predict for 2012? Although,
it is a bit cloudy I think we should expect
things to be much of the same as 2011.
With the decreased cow numbers due
primarily to the drought, I would expect
that registrations will likely be down.
Nevertheless, I think everything else will
be bright for ABBA and its members. I think
that with the decreased cow numbers, many
producers restocking, and high calf prices
will only increase the demand for our cattle
providing a great market and increased prices.
We have received some inquiries from several
international countries in regards to securing
some large shipments of cattle. It is expected
that we should have some information in the
first quarter of 2012 and once we have more
details we will pass them along to you. If
this comes to fruition this too would provide
an additional market. All of the increased
demand will only strengthen sales, thus
increasing transfers for ABBA. Based on the
increase in memberships the past two years, it
is expected that we should see an increase in
activity fees paid and hopefully a continued
increase in new members due to the demand,
enthusiasm, and services that ABBA provides.
All of this will result in ABBA continuing to
remain strong and viable.
ABBA will continue to pursue new traits
and tools to further improve the breed. It is
expected that over the next year we should
be able to launch one of the first Genomically
Enhanced EPD’s for Tenderness as well as
possibly introducing evaluations for other
traits that might benefit our breeders. On
the marketing front, ABBA will continue to
provide marketing efforts for both Brahman
and F-1 cattle. Much of this will be done in
cooperation with our state affiliates who are
very important to ABBA. We will remain

himself by taking me to the Blue Angels hangar to
meet the fl ight crews and get up real close. You see
to me the Blue Angels are a link to the past and a
“gateway to the future”! They make any little boy
dream big!
To walk up to these 50 million dollar, bright blue,
Boeing F/A 18 Hornets makes your knees weak. Th is
is a high performance, tactical aircraft designed to
operate from either aircraft carriers or land bases.
These twin jet engines deliver 36,000 pounds of
combined thrust and a top speed of more than mach
1.8! In case you cowboys are wondering, that’s a little
stronger than my new Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel!
The Blue Angels operate with a crew and support
staff of around 130 people. I tried to convince them
that since I could operate a tractor and drive a six
speed straight shift truck, that they should let me
try my hand at one of these F/A 18 Hornets. They
laughed and said for me to stick with something I
knew, a wheel barrow. The professionalism of the
whole Blue Angel squadron will make a lasting
impression on you, just like quality Brahman cattle.
The common denominators between the
Brahman breed and the Blue Angels are many. We
are both branded with pride, recognized the world
over, command much attention, draw people to
them, have a strong stature and presence, put on a
great show and we both make lasting impressions.
Blue Angels even have a show season just like our
Brahman cattle! You see, 2011 is being celebrated
as the centennial of naval aviation and their home
base is Pensacola, Florida Naval Air Station.
Th is experience defi nitely makes one proud to be
an American! We are so proud of all who serve in our
armed forces and I want to personally thank each
and everyone who made this a once in a lifetime
experience for me. Special thanks go to Rick Haun,
Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor, Shelly Ragsdale,
Director of Marketing for the Naval Aviation
Museum, Buddy Macon, Deputy Director of the

DIETER PLASSE (1934-2011)
This past October, the Brahman
Breed lost one of the most progressive
geneticists that ever worked with this
breed. Dr. Dieter Plasse was the brain,
soul, and engine for a sire-selection
program in Venezuela and Paraguay
(Seprocebu) who produced a tremendous
amount of information for sire selection,
proving the superiority of the Brahman
breed in the tropics.
A native of Germany, Dr. Plasse had
a PhD in Genetics from the University
of Göttingen, Germany. In 1964, Dr.
Plasse went to the University of Florida
to conduct research in beef cattle, and
from there he moved to Venezuela.
Since 1964, Dr. Plasse has been teaching
generations of veterinarians at the
Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias (UCV).
During his career, he designed and developed 13 different long-term research
programs. He was the coordinator for the different research stations and was in
charge of genetics programs in over 35 operations in Venezuela and Paraguay.
During his multiple trips, Dr. Plasse visited 19 different countries.
He was a former president of the Latin American Animal Production
Association; was a committee member for FAO and USA Science Academy; and
was part of the editorial committee for the following journals: Animal Breeding
Abstracts, Livestock Production Science, and Animal Breeding and Genetics.
He was author and co-author of multiple books, scientific papers, congress
abstracts, theses, and published articles. All this knowledge was always in
pursuit of the most efficient animal; time after time, he proved that Brahman
animals selected based on progeny performance were the key to achieving
genetic improvement.
He will be deeply missed by his disciples, but his knowledge will live in the
Venezuelan “llanos” for generations to come.
Graduado como Ingeniero Agrónomo (Especialidad Producción Animal)
en 1959 en la Universidad de Göttingen (Gotinga), Alemania, recibió el
doctorado de Ciencias Agrícolas (Dr. sc. agr.) en Genética Animal de esta misma
Universidad en 1964 luego de haber trabajado tres años bajo un convenio
con la Universidad de Florida en investigación en genética y reproducción de
bovinos de carne en el trópico. Ingresó como profesor a la Facultad de Ciencias
Veterinarias (UCV) en 1964, donde trabajó desde ese año en investigación,
docencia y asistencia técnica. Desde 1979 es Profesor Titular.
Diseñó y desarrolló 13 programas de investigación a largo plazo en genética
de bovinos de carne, fue coordinador de programas de investigación en dos
estaciones experimentales y desarrolló investigación y asistencia técnica en 35
rebaños particulares de ganado de carne en Venezuela y Bolivia.
Visitó en viajes profesionales 19 países y participó activamente en 91
congresos, cursos y seminarios nacionales e internacionales. Fue presidente de
la Asociación Latinoamericana de Producción Animal, miembro de comisiones
de la FAO y de la Academia de Ciencias de USA y formó parte del consejo
editorial de las revistas Animal Breeding Abstracts, Livestock Production
Science and Animal Breeding and Genetics. Publicó como autor y coautor 55
trabajos científicos, 124 compendios de trabajos presentados en congresos
internacionales, 68 trabajos en seminarios nacionales e internacionales y 109
artículos de divulgación. Editó o contribuyó en 38 libros y memorias. Fue tutor
de varias tesis de maestría y doctorado, fue un gran tutor, su nivel de exigencia
y dedicación a la formación de sus tutoreados es invalorable para todos los que
fuimos sus alumnos.
Como ser humano fue un hombre humilde, honesto, responsable, leal a sus
principios, solidario, sincero. Amó y trabajó por Venezuela y por la UCV hasta
el último día de su vida. Su legado siempre estará presente en esta y las futuras
generaciones de docencia, investigación, extensión y producción animal en
Latinoamérica y particularmente en Venezuela.

TV Agro filmed ot HK Cattle, world renowned Red Brahman Breeders
In October 2011, a crew from the Colombian agricultural
television station TV Agro visited the Sexing Technologies®
facilities in Texas, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Their goal was to
showcase the role of American livestock on their audience of 13
different countries in Central and South America.
During their stay in Texas, TV Agro (http://www.canaltvagro.
com) visited a couple of the premier Brahman breeders in the
world to illustrate the valuable product that ST provides to these
elite breeders. Their footage of HK Cattle and Heritage Cattle
Company exemplified the attributes of the Brahman breed in
all these countries and emphasized the importance of using
advanced biotechnologies in order to be ahead of the curve.
The next stop for TV Agro was the Sexing Technologies feed lot
in Ohio, which has a capacity for 10,000 heads and is used as a
premier quarantine and selection facility for cattle exports.
After Ohio, they headed to Madison, Wisconsin, to be part
of the 2011 World Dairy Expo. They visited several ST facilities
in the area, a semen collection bull stud, an IVF lab, as well as
Vaughn Farms, which is also used for export capabilities.
The filming process was a very good experience for everybody,
and their TV programs will highlight several aspects of the
American livestock industry and its impact on food production
for the world.

Why We Castrate
Randy L. Stanko, Ph.D. Texas A&M University-Kingsville
Several published research studies have evaluated growth
performance and feed efficiency, both pre- and post-weaning, and
the value at marketing of bull versus steer calves. There is no doubt
that bull calves gain faster (10-15%) and convert feed into gain more
efficiently (15-20%) than steer calves. None the less, castration is
an essential management procedure performed on most cow-calf
operations. Why? Because the U.S. commercial beef marketing
system has been developed to feed out, process, and retail sell beef
from steers and heifers at ≤ 30 months of age. Simply put, we do
not feed nor consume much graded (quality/yield) beef from young
bulls. Feed yard managers do not like to feed bulls because they
can be hard to handle, ride and(or) fight with pen mates, and can
be tough on equipment. Commercial packers do not like to process
young bulls because they tend not to quality grade and carcasses
would have limited marketability. Moreover, if bulls were fed to an
endpoint at which they would quality grade (select/low choice) their
carcasses would be difficult to process due to size and the subsequent
retail cuts would be too large for most folks to afford their purchase.
Given all the negatives that would result from growing and
finishing bulls rather than steers, one may speculate that steer calves
should, therefore, have more value/lb. at marketing. In general that
is usually the case in the weekly market reports from around the
country. The price difference between bull and steer calves can vary
between zero and $10+/cwt depending on supply and demand. In
a 2010 Arkansas study, Dr. Tom Troxel and colleagues evaluated
the selling prices of over 79,800 head of feeder calves as affected
by management practices. These calves were marketed through 14
Arkansas livestock auctions and the data revealed that steer calves
sold for $6.31/cwt more than bull calves, or about a $35 premium
for a 550 lb. steer calf.
In most markets, annual castration of bull calves prior to
marketing is a profitable practice. Most importantly, we must realize
that if we don’t castrate our bull calves the buyer is going to castrate
our calves, and, more often than not, charge us for the procedure,
the increased risk, and temporary decrease in performance by
discounting the purchase price.
Castration should be done sooner than later, younger is better
than older, pre-weaning is preferred to “at weaning” or postweaning, and cooler weather is better than hot weather because of
the stress and set back in performance which can occur. Utilizing
an approved, steer-calf growth implant at castration can overcome
most of loss in growth performance observed in steers vs. bulls with
minimal added cost or labor. Method of castration, surgical or nonsurgical, is best determined by the owner/manager, in consultation
with their veterinarian, and is dependent upon calf age and weight,
facilities, individual preference, and time of year. Non-surgical or
“bloodless” castration involves application of a strong elastrator
band above the testicles. The band constricts the blood supply to
the testicle and causes the testicles to degenerate and the scrotum
to drop off in about 2 to 3 wks. Administration of a long acting
penicillin and tetanus antitoxin at castration is recommended. If
desired, the degenerating testicles and scrotum can be knife removed
after several days. Surgical castration involves removal of the lower
1/3 of the scrotal skin with a sharp knife or scalpel to ensure proper
drainage post-surgery, finger pressing testicles (one at a time)
through the opening in the scrotum, and severing the spermatic
cord with a knife or scalpel as high up the cord as possible. Novice
castrators can obtain step-by-step instructions from a veterinarian
or extension livestock specialist and remember, cleanliness and cold
sterilized equipment is a must.
ABBA SHOW COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES WEIGHT & MEASUREMENT
PARAMETERS & RULES FOR THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL BRAHMAN SHOW
In an effort to comply with the demands of the American beef
industry and to improve the uniformity of the showring the
ABBA Show Committee recently met and approved the Weight &
Measurement Parameters for the 2012 International Brahman
Show to be held during the Houston Livestock Show. In addition to
the formulation of the parameters the committee also revised the
guidelines and rules for the process and enforcement of the weight
& measurement procedure.
The weight & measure parameters were derived by a Weighing &
Measuring Sub-Committee who reviewed weights from previous
International & National Shows. The parameters were then
reviewed by the entire Show Committee and the Board of Directors
and the feeling was that the parameters were quite liberal but would
effectively eliminate those cattle that are too large or too small to
conform to todays industry standards. The Show Committee will
continue to monitor the weights and hip heights at the conclusion of
each show and has the option to adjust these as needed.
The following are the rules associated with the weight &
measurement program:
1. Any animal that does not meet the weight & measurement
requirements at the International Brahman Show, National Brahman
Show or any other designated show where weights & measurements
are taken will be in-eligible to show at any future ABBA Approved
Shows until they reach the Junior Division. Any animal that
exceeds the parameters and is shown at an ABBA Approved Show
before reaching the Junior Division will be in-eligible to show their
remaining career. Both the exhibitor and owner of the previously
disqualified animal that is shown before reaching the Junior
Division will be in-eligible to show animals for 13 months following
the infraction.
2. All animals who have previously met the weight & measurement
requirements are eligible to show for their remaining show career.
All previously qualified animals must be weighed & measured at
any designated show where weights & measures are taken for
the collection of data only. Once animals have met the weight &
measurement parameters they must have their original registration
certificate or original ABBA Copy denoted as such by ABBA. Only
the Original Registration Certificate or Original Copy (Blue with
“COPY” across it) will be accepted for check-in and weights &
measures at the International & National Shows.
3. Any animal that does not meet the weight or measurement
parameter must be re-weighed or re-measured immediately after
coming off the scale only one time at the scale previously weighed/
measured on for qualification.
4. The hip height measurement will be taking directly over the hook
bone.

Gluten and were on free choice Bermuda grass hay.
Each bull was tagged with an EIA tag and divided into closely monitored
contemporary groups. By using the GrowSafe system, the feed efficiency of
each bull in every group was calculated. Ford Farms Brahman Bull, 103 ET983,
outperformed all of the other bulls in the feed efficiency division by only needing
17.62 pounds of feed to gain 3.06 lbs/day.

he NFREC, North Florida Research &
Education Center, was the site for the
recent 2011 annual Bull Test. The facility, under the
oversite of Dr. Cliff Lamb, is located in Marianna,
Florida and is a division of IFAS, Institute of Food &
Agricultural Sciences.
Not since the days of Florida’s US Sugar Corp
and the W.H. Stuart Ranch, have Brahman breeders
feed tested their bulls. This year not only did they
participate, but a Ford Farms Brahman Bull won the
feed efficiency division of the test. The All-Breeds
Bull Test had a total of 63 bulls from 7 different
breeds that were fed for 112 days. The bulls were
fed a Beef Premix that included Soya hulls and Corn
Larry Ford outside of University of Florida with David Thomas, Manager of North
Florida Bull Test
66TH ANNUAL GUAYAQUIL CATTLE FAIR AND BRAHMAN SHOW
The 66th annual Guayaquil Cattle Fair and Brahman Show was
held October 7 to 9, 2011. This is the largest Brahman show in
Ecuador.
At the 2011 fair there were 189 head of Brahman cattle entered
with 15 breeders being represented.
The Best Breeder, or Premiere Breeder award went to Mr. Ulises
Aguayo.
The judge was Dr. John Edwards, who did an excellent job of
judging the cattle. The fairgrounds received over 80.000 visitors
during 4 days.

our traditional markets as well as emerging
markets. The ABBA plans to be represented
well at the 2012 World Brahman Congress in
Panama City, Panama, July 2-7 by taking a
large delegation of breeders.
ABBA will continue to promote the breed
through our traditional communication
efforts of print ads, trade show booths, and
our website in addition to a show on the
“American Rancher “on RFD-TV in February.
By the time you read this, ABBA will have
likely hired a Director of Communications/
Youth Activities. This person will oversee
and increase our communication efforts and
ultimately ensure we are telling our story
and achieving the most visibility within the
industry.
You will also be able to continue to utilize
the programs and opportunities that
ABBA provides such as shows, the Annual
Membership Convention, junior activities and
other educational, enjoyable and rewarding
activities in the coming year.
I believe 2012 could be a banner year for
ABBA and its members. Much of this success
is due to the continued efforts you have made
by improving the cattle and supporting
the Association. ABBA is blessed to have
dedicated leadership and a great group of
breeders that support the Association and as
a result the future will continue to be bright.
