Reinactment of the Battle of Cowpens
225th Anniversary
Spartanburg History
A treaty struck with the Cherokee
Indian nation in 1753 opened SC's
frontier to settlers. The county has
a proud Revolutionary War heritage,
boasting more engagement sites
than practically any locale in the
US. After capturing Charleston in
1780, the Redcoats might have
secured victory had they not so savagely violated their own terms for
surrender. Subjected to slaughter,
torture and humiliation, the rebel
patriots fought back with a
vengeance.
The Spartanburg area saw six engagements in four weeks, beginning
in July with the Battle of Cedar
Springs. The battles of Gowen's
Fort, Earle's Ford and Fort Prince
immediately followed, leading to a
second battle at Cedar Spring and
the Battle of Musgrove Mill.
Two critical engagements altered
the course of the war. At the Battle
of King's Mountain 160 loyalists
were killed and 760 taken prisoner.
Three months later, the Americans
led by General Daniel Morgan,
trounced their British opponents in
the monumental Battle of Cowpens.
Following the fighting, more settlements grew up in the area and the
new district began to form its own
government. A new courthouse was
built in the middle of the county and
the town of Spartanburg was born,
named after the Spartanburg
Regiment formed at the beginning
of the war.

...aplace of history
The town incorporated in 1834, and
the city's industry was flourishing
by the middle of the century. It
became known as “Hub City”
because its many railroads gave it a
look of a wheel hub on maps.
Major textile expansion began in
1877 and between 1880 and 1910,
industrialists built nearly 40 textile
mills in the area and, at one time,
the county boasted over a half-million spindles. World War I hit and
over 4,000 of the city's natives
served, nearly 2,897 of whom were
drafted. Over 100,000 men from
across the country trained at Camp
Wadsworth, west of the city.
During the second World War, over
200,000 soldiers were trained at
Camp Croft, just south of the city,
while 18,000 of the county's men
served in battle. The camp's $2.5
million-payroll further strengthened
Spartanburg's economy.
The end of WWII marked the slow
decline of the mill village as rising
wages and the auto-boom of the
1950s spread Spartanburg residents
throughout the city.
By the end of the decade, mill society was pretty much history.
In the 1970s, a new economic boom
arrived in the form of international
industry taking us into the 21st century.
Downtown Spartanburg
Morgan Square
The public square of Spartanburg
dates from 1787, when this location
was designated as the seat of
Spartan District, later Spartanburg
County. It became Morgan Square in
1887, when Congress allocated more
than $20,000 to commemorate the
centennial of the Battle of Cowpens
with a statue of Daniel Morgan.
Every Monday, wagons carrying provisions and goods from the countryside and the North Carolina mountains would gather in Morgan
Square, many camping beside the
spring behind the courthouse.
square date to 1880's and reflect
the Queen Anne Style.

Museum of History for a walking

Spartanburg Cemeteries
Magnolia Cemetery, established on
land donated to the city by Jesse
Cleveland, was active through the
early years of the 20th century.
Notables buried in the cemetery
include William “Singing Billy”
Walker, whose Southern Harmony
and Christian Harmony shape-note
hymnals sold half a million copies
during his lifetime. Among the popular hymns found in this book is the
traditional Southern arrangement of
Amazing Grace.
Other graves include those of several high-ranking Confederate soldiers
and political leaders, as well as
James H. Carlisle, the distinguished
president of Wofford College from
Today's Morgan Square also features
1875 through 1902. The Old City
the town clock, originally located in
Cemetery, near South Church
the old “opera house,” a combination
Street, began with a number of
city hall and auditorium. Many of the
graves displaced from Magnolia
storefronts on the south side of the
Cemetery by the Southern Railway.

"My friend, I have just returned
from Nazareth, where I have been
and heard things which no tongue
can tell, no pen can paint, no language can describe of which no
man can have a just conception
until he has heard, seen and felt."...
This is one observer’s account of a
camp meeting at Nazareth Church
in July 1802. It is said that 8,000 of
the 12,000 population of the county
attended. The local Baptist Association reported gaining more than
2,000 new members in 1801, 1802,
and 1803. Nazareth Church was
established by the “Tyger River
Colony” of Scots-Irish immigrants,
the first Europeans to settle in west
of the Broad River after the
Cherokee War in 1760. Many of the
graves in the cemetery (listed on the
National Register of Historic Places)

Originally known as Trough Shoals,
the Pacolet community has a long
and interesting history. The area was
once sacred hunting and fishing territory for the Cherokee and Catawba
nations.
There are 13 archival sites listed on
the National Register located along
the Pacolet River.
What would become the Town of

A 1790 Greek revival style plantation home fully restored with 800
acres of working farmland is a spectacular site to visit.
Price House
Built prior to 1850, the Seay House
is believed to be the oldest homestead standing in the City of
Spartanburg. Interpretation by the
Spartanburg County Historical
Association focuses on the lives of
women in the late 19th and early
20th centuries, as three unmarried
daughters of Kinsman Seay, Ruthy,
Patsy, and Sarah lived a simple
farm life in this house. The oldest
portion of this dwelling is a typical
Scots-Irish, one room, one and onehalf story, log house. The logs are
hand hewn, and the pipestem chimney, made of fieldstone, is a style
commonly found in Virginia but
quite unusual for Upstate South
Carolina.
Charles Moore, the builder of
Walnut Grove, came into South
Carolina in the 1760's. Moore and
his wife Mary brought with them to
South Carolina eight children, and
two more were born at Walnut
Grove. Margaret Katherine, born in
Ireland in 1752, was their oldest
daughter, and in 1767 she married
Andrew Barry.
After the American Revolution the
area expanded.The first textile mill
was built in 1882 and Pacolet became a thriving town and a showplace for other manufacturing companies. Remaining is a unique mill
village with outdoor amphitheatre,
parks, stone work and over 250 arts
and craft style homes. The interior
of Pacolet Mills Baptist Church is
the finest example of arts and crafts
style interior in the state. The landscape design architect was Earle
Draper.

Operates as a house museum by
the Spartanburg County Historical
Association, the Thomas Price
House was built in 1795. It was a
residence for a wealthy planter and
also served as a tavern and post
office. Its architecture is quite unusual for the Carolina Piedmont.
With a handmade brick veneer laid
in elegant flemish bond, it resembles Pennsylvania homes of the late
18th century.
Visitors can also see an authentic
slave cabin and explore a 100-acre
natural forest tract.

staunch Patriots. Western Spartanburg County became a hotbed of
recruiting activity.
Several Patriot military units were
formed, including the Spartan Regiment, from which the county and
city eventually took their names.
Charles Moore died in 1805, and his
son built a much grander home at
nearby Fredonia, but Walnut Grove
and much of this land remained in
the family for five generations until
1961, when it was donated to the
Spartanburg County Historical
Association for restoration and
eventually, it opened to the public
as a house museum.

Located on the Southern Railroad
about five miles southeast of
Spartanburg, Camp Croft opened in
1940. Activity at the U.S. Army
basic training post wound down
soon after the Japanese surrender
in August 1945; however, it was not
until November 1946 that the camp
was officially closed.
The cantonment area represented a
$12 million investment in land,
structures, water lines and paved
roads. Basic trainees from New
York, Pennsylvania and New
England soon began arriving in
groups of 16,000 to begin the 13-
week cycle of basic training. Some
such as Henry Kissinger and Zero
Mostel became famous. About 500
prisoners of war from Rommel's
Afrika Corps were brought to
Spartanburg to help bring in the
1944 peach crop.
The Germans stayed to work in various on-post jobs such as the bakeries, motor pools and laundries,
making many local friends.
Glendale
Glendale is a historic textile town
on the Lawson's Fork, five miles
southeast of Downtown Spartanburg
and two miles from the Spartanburg
Country Club. The gigantic mill,
which had stopped operating in the
1960s, mysteriously burned in 2004
leaving only the original company
store and the Victorian mill office.
Some village houses were constructed about 150 years ago, and are
typical of worker's houses at other
upstate mill villages. Most have
been modernized. Recent village
revitalizations include converting

which there was a skirmish with
British forces. The old SpartanburgGlendale-Clifton trolley line right-ofways are still evident.

Musgrove Mill State Historic Site
Musgrove Mill State Historic Site's
peaceful setting in the Piedmont
woods stands in sharp contrast to
the bloody struggle waged there on
Aug. 19, 1780. A group of 200 Patriot
militiamen rode to strike what they
thought was an equal number of
Loyalists at Musgrove Mill on the
Enoree River. Instead, they found
themselves badly outnumbered, the
Tories having been joined by 300
provincial regulars from the British
post at Ninety Six.
Retreat was impossible, a frontal
assault suicidal. So the Patriot
forces took a strong defensive position and lured the Loyalists into a
fierce fight that turned into a near
rout after the British attack
collapsed.
The park's visitor center is filled with
interpretive exhibits which focus on
the Battle of Musgrove Mill and also
detail South Carolina's pivotal role in
the Revolutionary War.

The park's nature trail highlights the
Enoree River, Cedar Shoals Creek

Historic Downtown Greer
The Greer Downtown Historic
District is significant for its high
concentration of intact examples of
early twentieth-century commercial
architecture. The commercial buildings in the district signify Greer's
expansion from an agricultural marketplace to include an industrial and
manufacturing economy. Greer was
first established as Greer's Station
in 1873 as a flag station along the
Atlanta Charlotte Air Line Railroad.
The town was officially incorporated as Greer's in 1876, but later
...aplace of history
became known simply as Greer.
From the late 1870's through the
1890's, downtown Greer prospered
in the cotton trade and the streets
were lined with a variety of businesses such as general stores,
physicians, and other essential
services.
With the expansion of the textile
mills, downtown Greer also expanded in the form of new industry and
commerce focused on supporting
textiles. Warehouses, lumber and
fuel production, and the manufacture of cotton byproducts (such as
cottonseed oil and fertilizer) downtown were the outgrowth of the
textile mills. These new businesses
and industries changed the face of
downtown Greer as they replaced
older wood frame buildings with
brick commercial structures, some
as tall as two or three stories.
Greer's downtown commercial
architecture reflects the prosperity
of the town's economy between
1900 and 1930 when textiles and
related industries flourished.
Glenn Springs Historic District
The heyday of Glenn Springs came
between 1840 and 1940, when it
was a popular summer destination
for South Carolinians from the Low
Country who were attracted by
famous sulfate springs and a wonderfully healthy summer climate.
Unfortunately, the large hotel where
noted singer Jenny Lind once performed was destroyed by far, but
many points of interest survive, including the Glenn Springs Academy
(formerly the Spartanburg Boys
Home), interesting Episcopal and
Presbyterian Churches; and the
historic homes built by
John C. Zimmerman,
Charles W. Zimmerman,
Dr. Maurice Moore (Cedar Grove),
and Dr. John Winsmith (Camp Hill).
Pacolet Historic Mill District
The Mill Village recaptures the history and culture of the Pacolet Mill
community. The village was built
with the "vision of providing cultural, spiritual, recreational, educational and jobs for the people who
agreed to move here." Although the
industry has been removed from the
area, the footprints still remain. Designed by landscape architect Earle
Draper in the early 1900's, these
footprints contain paved infrastructure, an amphitheater that seats
2,500 people on the river and
unique concrete pergola's. The present Town Hall once the business
office for the industry has been
beautifully restored with a mural
welcoming people to Pacolet showcasing the entire planned community. Within the historic district
there are over 250 arts and craft
style homes which is the largest
concentration of this architecture in
SC. Dating back to 1927, the finest
example of arts and crafts style
interior is located in Pacolet Mills
Baptist Church.
Please call for a day tour or weekend at 864-474-9504.

Historic Neighborhoods
Hampton Heights
The Hampton Heights Historic
District is a significant collection of
120 residences in the central city
that retains its historic and architectural integrity from the early twentieth century. Developed between
1890 and 1930, it was the home of
numerous middle and upper class
citizens of Spartanburg. It is representative of the prevalent urban and
suburban house types of the era, and
of the nature of suburban development in a growing city. Architectural styles represented in the neighborhood include Queen Anne,
Bungalow, Craftsman, Four-Square,
and Neo-Classical. Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places
in 1983, the neighborhood has benefited greatly from the revitalization
efforts of the Preservation Trust of
Spartanburg, and a strong, diverse
homeowners association.

The Cowpens railroad depot was
built in the 1870s for the Southern
Railway. Local citizens saved the
depot from destruction, and moved
it to its current location to serve as
a community center and museum.
An excellent example of a mediumsized depot from the golden age of
American railroads, it was placed
on the National Register of Historic
Places in 1997.
The museum also houses items
donated by crewmen and local citizens emphasizing the naval history
of several U.S. Navy warships
named for the Battle of Cowpens in
the American Revolution.

Pacolet River Heritage Preserve
BikeTrails/HikingTrails
A green retreat in the heart of fast
growing Spartanburg County, the
park offers more than 12 miles of
biking and hiking trails, a playground, picnicking, primitive camping, as well as 50 campsites with
water and electrical hookup, and
fishing and boating in two lakes,
including 150 acre Lake Craig for
bass, bream, catfish and crappie.
Croft is also known around the region for its equestrian facilities hosting shows in its arena and boasting more than 20 miles of equestrian facilities and 50 stalls.
The diverse park was once an Army
training base and covers nearly 12
square miles of rolling, wooded terrain that also provides habitat for a
wide variety of flora and fauna just
five miles from bustling downtown
Spartanburg.

Pacolet River Heritage Preserve
covers 278 acres in Spartanburg
County. Come to bird-watch, photograph, fish or simply enjoy the
woods and river. Leave with a sense
of awe sparked by visiting a site
important to people thousands of
years ago. As you sit watching the
river, imagine the lives of the Native
Americans who stopped here on
their seasonal migrations between
the coast and the uplands of the
state.
What to look for:
The preserve protects two Native
American soapstone quarries. Early
residents of the state came here
between 3000 and 1100 B.C. to
obtain material from which they
made bowls, pipes and other
necessities.

Mountain Biking - Spartanburg
When to go:
The preserve is open from daylight
to dusk. Spring and fall are the best
times for migrating songbirds, and
the hardwoods should produce good
fall color.
Peters Creek Heritage Preserve
The soapstone outcrops are fragile
and should not be touched. Two
uncommon plant species, a moss
and a leafy liverwort, are also protected within the preserve.

Less rare, but no less interesting,
are the pine/hardwoods along the
Pacolet River. In summer, the forest
shelters wood thrushes, red-eyed
vireos, eastern wood pewees and
yellow-billed cuckoos, along with
more commonly-seen songbirds.
Reptiles and amphibians love the
woods, too. Look for harmless black
rat snakes and Eastern kingsnakes,
as well as gray treefrogs, toads and
other amphibians.
Peters Creek Heritage Preserve
covers 160 acres in Spartanburg
County. This piedmont cove forest,
with its rolling topography, an old
mill dam, two creeks, and walking
trails, is a pleasant and peaceful
place to visit.
Allow about 20 minutes to walk the
short trail from the parking area to
the river.
What to look for:
The Preserve includes hardwood
bluffs and slopes along Peters
Creek, Mineral Springs, and an
unnamed stream. These hardwoods
provide stream and bluff-side conditions suitable for the second largest
known population of dwarf-
flowered heartleaf, Hexastylis naniflora, a threatened species.
Songbirds and wildlife make their
home in these hardwood forests,
the pine woodlands, and scrub land.
Volunteers have constructed almost
four miles of trails throughout the
preserve.
Volunteers help maintain the trails
and improvements. Visitors seeking
a quick outdoor experience can hike
a short twenty-minute loop trail
from the parking area through a
hardwood forest. More ambitious
trekkers can see all of the preserve.
The longer trip requires a couple of
stream crossings - might get your
feet wet - and can take about two
or three hours. A 300-year flood
caused by a tropical storm washed
two large footbridges away. Efforts
are underway to replace those
bridges. In May, the dense clusters
of pink flowers on mountain laurel
reflect spectacularly on Peters
Creek.

water quality buffer in a fast growing region as well as providing

Glendale Outdoor Leadership, or
GOLS, goal is to target the people
who would not otherwise be in the
outdoors and help find them an
avenue with which they can enjoy
the outdoors, be it hiking, recreational kayaking or more extreme
activities like mountain biking and
white water kayaking.
The driving force behind GOLS is
the belief that when individuals
conquer outdoor challenges such as
kayaking, rock climbing, cycling,
mountain biking, trail running and
wilderness survival, they learn problem-solving skills, determination
Kayaking - Glendale Shoals
and perseverance that are vital for
women and teens to develop self
esteem and confidence while
promoting active living and healthy
life-style choices.
The mission of these programs is
strengthening the courage, confidence, and leadership qualities of
individuals through the challenge
and support of group wilderness
and community-based experiences.
As people begin to find their own
personal avenue for enjoying the
outdoors, they will also become
more aware of stewardship and
preserving our natural spaces.

loud noise of many voices.
Launched on the unsuspecting city
of Spartanburg in a guerrilla marketing campaign in 2004, HUB-BUB.COM
has brought together many of the
city's cutting-edge artists, musicians,
and activists.
HUB-BUB Showroom
Together they produce a constant
stream of programming that has
something for everyone-from the
annual Green Screen Film Series to
national music acts, from “Bring
Your Own Art” nights to poetry
slams. Check out the online event
calendar to see what HUB-BUB is
up to this week, or drop by the
gallery, 9-5 weekdays.
One of the most innovative programs of its kind in the country, the
HUB-BUB Artist-in-Residence program
brings three young visual artists and
one creative writer to Spartanburg
to live in roomy apartments above
the Showroom. These young artists
spend 11 months in Spartanburg,
assisting with HUB-BUB events and
performing a variety of community
service art projects. The AIR program, now a member of the Alliance
of Artist Communities, is funded by
private donors, including the Nimoy
Foundation of Los Angeles.
The Hub City Writers Project is an independent, community-based press that
has published more than 35 titles,
sponsors literary contests, and hosts
creative writing conferences, workshops, and readings. Modeling the
organization after the Depression-era
Federal Writers Project, Hub City has
marshaled the talents of writers
across South Carolina to create a
series of books characterized by a
strong sense of place. A bookstore
selling Hub City titles is on site and
open 9-5 daily.
Together these great organizations
form HubCulture, “building community though dynamic arts and ideas.”
The Showroom is located at 149 S.
Daniel Morgan Avenue in downtown
Spartanburg.
