Dear Friend,
All of us at KLJC-FM/Life 88.5 are deeply honored to carry forward the faithful Kingdom-building
work of KLJC in the Kansas City area—work that you have made possible through your prayers and
loyal support.
KLJC-FM/Life 88.5 has become an outreach of Northwestern College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Northwestern began its broadcast ministry in 1949 when Rev. Billy Graham, then president of the college,
signed our flagship station KTIS-FM on with a prayer of dedication. Since then, God has opened doors
through a total of 15 music and talk stations across the Midwest and through resources available online,
reaching millions of people with the love of Jesus Christ.
The ministry strategy we’ll use in the Kansas City area will be based on Jesus’ own strategy. In
Mark 4:33–34 we learn, “With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could
understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own
disciples, he explained everything” (niv).
Here at KLJC-FM/Life 88.5, we use music in the same way Jesus used parables. Music can share the
Gospel in a way that’s attractive to a broad audience, from people who are simply scanning the radio dial to
committed Christ-followers.
Then by live-streaming our talk (Faith Radio) network through our Web site and providing other
resources online, we draw listeners into a further knowledge of Christ through solid Bible teaching. It is our
hope that you will turn to these resources when you need encouragement during challenging times, wisdom
about family relationships or even help to grow spiritually. And you can share these with others!
Our most important commitment to you is that we will be deeply involved in the local Kansas City
community. We will:
• Carefully tailor the uplifting music for the tastes of local listeners
• Create community events, concerts and other outreaches
• Seek local staff who are eager to invest themselves in your churches and events
• Give the many outstanding Christian ministries in the area a platform on our
station to raise awareness, support and volunteers
In the end, we view this mission in your community as an opportunity both to serve God and to
serve you. If you have more questions about Northwestern Media or Life 88.5, please read more online at
www.life885.com. I also want to invite you to visit our teaching ministry at www.myfaithradio.com today.
We hope and pray that you will join us for exciting days ahead!
Until the whole world hears,

A Ministry of Northwestern College
Dear KLJC Listener,
Forty-plus years ago, KLJC began its broadcasting ministry. Over the years
many listeners were encouraged by this ministry through Bible teaching and Christian
music. KLJC reached out to and partnered with churches, para-church ministries, and
businesses in the Kansas City metro area. As a result of the Christian Broadcasting major
established by Calvary Bible College, 200 graduates of that program are ministering
today through Christian radio in the USA and around the world.
KLJC sponsored concerts, benevolent ministries, and an online prayer ministry
that reached out to the community to give encouragement. Truly, throughout the years
KLJC has been the station many faithful listeners have turned to for positive Christian
radio. With such a history, why would we sell our station? There are several reasons.
Allow me to share two of them.
First, we no longer offer a broadcasting major. Over the years we went from a
major to a minor and then eventually discontinued the program due to lack of student
interest and enrollment.
In addition, KLJC had been our primary recruiting tool for the Nontraditional
Studies Department. Today this is no longer the case. Young people are turning to the
Internet to research colleges and are turning to media systems other than radio to listen
to music.
Much thought and prayer over the past year went into the decision to sell KLJC.
The president’s cabinet and the board of trustees together came to the conclusion that
this was the right time to sell the station. Several buyers showed interest, but in the end,
Northwestern College (St. Paul, MN) has purchased our station.
The leadership and governing board of Calvary Bible College are very
encouraged by this transaction. The format of KLJC under the new management will
become music only, but the style of music will continue to be similar. Our listeners will
be pleased to know that KLJC will continue to minister to them with the same positive
sound of contemporary Christian radio.
KLJC is a station that our audience can trust and support with their prayers and
finances. May God truly bless this new station in the Kansas City area as it shares the
Gospel and continues to minister to the spiritual needs of the listening audience.
Because of Calvary,
James L. Clark, Ph.D.
President
Northwestern Media
A New Opportunity to Change
Lives in Kansas City
T
o fulfill the mission of leading people to Christ and nurturing them in their spiritual
growth, Northwestern Media (NWM) has purchased radio station KLJC-FM 88.5 in
Kansas City. The station will be known as Life 88.5 with new call letters, KJNW-FM.
Goals:
(1) To minister to a much broader audience of radio listeners by increasing
Life 88.5’s current weekly listenership from slightly less than 100,000
to 300,000 or more in the next four years
(2) To generate enough revenue from listeners and businesses to break
even financially within four years
Rationale:
4 As you have discovered in your own community, people’s lives are changed
by listening to Christ-centered music on the radio
4
People are most likely to listen to music that reflects their tastes
4
ost Christian radio listeners want to serve others in their communities
M
but often are not aware of needs. Christian radio stations often encourage
listeners to come alongside local, faith-based nonprofit organizations to
help them meet critical needs
4
Like you, most Christian radio listeners want to grow deeper in their faith
Solution:
4 Life 88.5 will help change lives through music chosen by Kansas City listeners
4
Life 88.5 will help transform its community by encouraging listeners to meet the
needs of hurting people through financial gifts and by volunteering with local faithbased ministries that serve the poor, homeless and others in need
4
Life 88.5 will assist listeners in coming to faith in Christ and growing in their
faith through the on-air programming and through (1) The best of teaching and
interactive talk programs “live-streamed” from our own Faith Radio network
through Life 88.5’s website and (2) Many ministry resources made available on
Life 88.5’s website
Requirement:
NWM requires each of its stations to cover their capital and operating expenses
as quickly as possible. Our financial forecast indicates that Life 88.5 should be
self-sustaining in four to five years
Request:
4 Thanks for helping to change lives in your city by supporting your local Christian
radio station
4
ould you also be willing to consider helping change lives in Kansas City with an
W
over-and-above, one-time gift for seed money to help Life 88.5 get off to a strong
start? We would like to use your gift this fall to challenge Kansas City listeners to
support this new station in their area
4
The goal is to raise $200,000 to “jump-start” this new venture and to encourage
local people to support their own station
Northwestern College/Northwestern Media FAQ
What is Northwestern College?
Northwestern College is a comprehensive Christian college located in Saint Paul,
Minnesota. It was started as a series of evening Bible and missions classes at First
Baptist Church of Minneapolis in 1902 and gradually evolved into a Bible college
and seminary. Today, as a comprehensive Christian college, Northwestern educates
more than 3,000 students in traditional residential, adult continuing education and
graduate classes.
What is Northwestern Media?
With its most recent acquisition in Kansas City, Northwestern College, doing business
as Northwestern Media, owns 15 radio stations (10 FM and 5 AM stations) in eight
Midwestern markets. Northwestern Media began in 1949 when then-president Rev.
Billy Graham signed KTIS-AM on the air with a prayer of dedication. Northwestern
College students provided the initial funding for the radio ministry.
Most of our nine music stations play almost exclusively contemporary Christian
music, while six air Christian talk and teaching programs. More than 800,000
different people listen to these stations in the average week. In the two markets
(Des Moines and Kansas City) where we have no terrestrial talk/teaching stations,
our Faith Radio network is live-streamed through the music stations and crosspromoted on the air.
What is the mission of Northwestern Media?
The mission is to lead people to Christ and to nurture them in their spiritual growth
through Christ-centered media. Given the twofold mission of Northwestern Media,
we need to reach out not only to a broad audience that includes non-Christians or
those on the “fringes” of the faith but also to a narrower audience that is made up
primarily of Christians.
Given our mission, we make serious attempts to replicate the ministry strategy of
Jesus as recorded in Mark 4:33–34: “With many similar parables Jesus spoke the
word to them [Matthew 13:34–“crowd”], as much as they could understand. He
did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone
with his own disciples, he explained everything” (niv). We substitute “music” for
“parables” in these verses as we reach out with the Gospel.
What is Northwestern Media’s vision?
We have stated our vision in two ways:
4
s part of the Northwestern College community, we define our vision as
A
reaching a broad audience (with music) looking for those who want to be
taught (talk/teaching programs).
4
e have also defined our mission as using multiple media platforms to engage
W
and empower audience members to transform their communities for Christ.
What is unique about Northwestern Media’s stations?
Northwestern Media’s stations share some commonalities with other Christian radio
stations—we play contemporary Christian music, we air many nationally syndicated
talk/teaching programs, etc. However, we have positioned our stations differently
than other media ministries in a number of ways:
4
ll our music stations are programmed locally to fit the music tastes (measured
A
by continuous testing) of local audiences, but our stations do share a master
music playlist.
4
ecause talk/teaching stations typically attract much smaller audiences, our talk/
B
teaching stations are largely programmed centrally by our Home Office staff
with brief cutaways throughout the schedule for local content.
4
e attempt to “super-serve” the communities where we own stations.
W
We promote and partner with other local nonprofit organizations (including
churches and para-church ministries), provide a calendar of local events
and so on.
4
e attempt to engage and empower our listeners by soliciting their comments
W
on-air, encouraging listeners to pray for each other (PrayerWorks), recruiting
listeners to get involved in a variety of volunteer and community activities, serve
others in the community by “paying it forward” etc.
4
e create pathways through our music Web sites to lead listeners to content
W
(generated by our talk/teaching stations and other sources) that will help them
solve problems they face every day and assist them in growing deeper in their
faith through Bible studies, etc.
4
e build strong relationships with other media partners (other radio and
W
TV stations) to share content (especially weather news), but we also give
a voice to Christians who are working in secular radio and TV stations to
express their faith.

What is the potential audience for Life 88.5?
There are 2,050,000 people who live within listening range of Life 88.5.
About how many people does Life 88.5 actually reach in the average week?
When Northwestern Media took over the station, it was reaching about 92,000
people in the average week. Our goal is to increase the number of listeners in the
average week to 300,000 or more in the next four years
What is the annual budget for Life 88.5?
We have established a very conservative budget in the $1 million dollar range for
the first year, but actual operating costs are higher than that. This means other
Northwestern Media Stations will have to help bear some of the costs of operating
the station. As support increases, Life 88.5 will bear an increasingly larger share of
actual costs of operation.
What makes Life 88.5 different from other Christian radio stations?
Life 88.5 is all about building up families and believers in the Kansas City area. We
are in Kansas City, serving Kansas City. Our music is selected by listeners in Kansas
City. We’re working hard to be a different kind of station, one where you’re
welcome no matter what you’ve done, how much you know, how much money you
earn, how you vote, or absolutely anything else. God’s love, forgiveness, and hope
is here for you- and we are too. Welcome, to Kansas City’s NEW home for uplifting
Christian music- Life 88.5. Where is Life 88.5 located?
Life 88.5 is currently located on the south side of Kansas City at Calvary College
campus. However, we are currently preparing new facilities in Overland Park. All
of our programming comes from our local studios and our staff all live here as
well. We have staff who live in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Overland Park, Shawnee
and beyond. We may even attend church with you!
May I visit Life 88.5?
We would LOVE for you come see us at our new location following our move in late
July, 2013! Just drop by. Our office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. We will
soon be located at 8717 W. 110th Street in the Corporate Woods area of Overland
Park. If you would like to schedule a group tour, please in advance and ask for our
Community & Listener Engagement Director, T.J. Jackson.
Do you offer group tours of Life 88.5?
Absolutely. We do great tours! If you would like to schedule a group tour, please
call in advance and ask for our Community & Listener Engagement Director, T.J.
Jackson. Based upon the size of the group, please allow 30-45 minutes for the tour.
How can I support Life 88.5?
We need your help in three very important areas. We need your prayer support,
your financial support and your time. Please pray for our team of employees and
volunteers who are called to create opportunities to reach people in the Kansas City
region for Christ and strengthen the church. Please support Life 88.5 generously
with your financial gifts throughout the year. You and others make it possible to
keep Life 88.5 on the air each day. And, please volunteer for Life 88.5 events
throughout the community and at the studios. This includes encouraging your
family, friends and co-workers to listen to Life 88.5.
How do I schedule a speaker from Life 88.5 for my church or organization?
We have several speakers on the Life 88.5 team. Please call to schedule a
speaker. We do not charge for appearance. However, gifts of support to the
ministry of Life 88.5 are always welcome.
