Blogging and Democratization in
Malaysia:
Membina dan Meruntuh Malaysia:
A New Civil Society in the Making
Sebuah Imbasan Orang Dalam Tentang
Umno, Razak dan Mahathir
Jun-E Tan and Zawawi Ibrahim
Ahmad Mustapha Hassan
Before the 12th Malaysian General
Election, bloggers were called
numerous, often unflattering,
names by Malaysian government
officials and other unsavoury
characters. Virtually immediately
after the election results, they
were hailed by many, including the
same unsavoury characters, as
“key players” and “prime movers”.
Some have even gone so far
as to blame the dismal election
performance of the Barisan Nasional on bloggers and
blogging. Amidst all this, and the post-March 8 hype, this
original, well-researched and very readable volume, provides
a necessary resource for those who wish to understand
Malaysian blogging more comprehensively within a wider
socio-political context. This volume is certainly necessary
reading for Malaysians who wish to understand how the
new media may or may not be able to contribute to the
expansion of democratic space. And it really ought to
be compulsory reading for the unsavoury characters who
still refuse to understand where Malaysia is heading.
Apakah yang telah dicapai oleh
dua orang Perdana Menteri Malaysia yang lalu, dan apakah warisan
yang mereka tinggalkan? Buku
ini merupakan pengkisahan orang
dalam pertama tentang pentadbiran Malaysia selepas kemerdekaan, iaitu pada tahun 1970-an
dan 1980-an, daripada perspektif
pemerhati di tepi gelanggang. Pengarang, Ahmad Mustapha Hasan,
bukan hanya seorang nasionalis

The Memoirs of a Malayan Communist
Revolutionary
Fong Chong Pik
Fong Chong Pik, or Fang Chuang
Pi or Lee Ping, or “The Plen” as he
variously known, spent his twilight
years, post 1989 Peace Accord,
contemplating and writing about
his life on the flipside of Malayan
history. Longing to return home
at last but never allowed to, he
was acutely aware of how he, and
the Left, had been written out, or
excoriated, in the official accounts
of Singapore’s independence
struggles. The vividly told episodes of courage, treachery,
honour, and loss will leave you wanting to know more
about the true history of Singapore as part of Malaya,
and the men and women who have been forgotten.

Sharing the Nation:
Faith, Difference and the State 50 Years
After Merdeka
Norani Othman, Mavis C. Puthucheary & Clive S. Kessler
Malaysia’s independence and its
Constitution are grounded upon
the political bargaining process
and ensuing “social contract”
that made them possible. Yet
two major questions central to
the “Merdeka process” persist.
Recent controversies now pose
the question whether there has
been any change in the nation’s
formative “social contract” and,
if so, whether it has been openly
negotiated and imposed? These issues are addressed in
this collection of essays. Together they clarify the origins
in political philosophy of the term “social contract”, trace
its largely unacknowledged modification as it was imported
into and adapted to the Malaysian context, and explore
the uses to which in its refashioned form it has been put in
Malaysian politics.

Failed Nation?
The Singapore Judiciary
Francis T. Seow
“Once again, Francis Seow has
revealed, with his usual rigour and
attention to detail, a vital part of
Singapore’s repressive machinery,
this time by placing his spotlight on
its judiciary. Beyond Suspicion? The
Singapore Judiciary is essential to
understanding the true nature
of human rights abuses in that
country. Particularly thorough are
the chapters dealing with the use
of civil defamation suits through
the courts by ruling party leaders against political critics.
Seow’s meticulous treatment of these suits clearly
illustrates that in politically sensitive cases, the Singapore
judiciary has not moved to check the Executive’s misuse of
the law. Human rights campaigners now and the historians
of the future will regard it as required reading”.

Social Roots of the Malay Left
Rustam A. Sani
Concerns of a Malaysian Nationalist
Rustam A. Sani
Here at last are Rustam Sani’s
articles and blog postings from
1986-2006 in English, a keeneyed and passionate sifting
through the organic tailings of this
nation that unearths the many
splendoured-failures of nationcreation in Malaysia since 1957.
This is an essential book
by one of Malaysia’s most
courageous

important

Easy to read, yet provocative, thoughtful, objective—

repay re-reading during this exciting time of change

This is a study of the Kesatuan
Melayu Muda (KMM)—the first
Malay political party, established
in 1938 and led by Ibrahim Yaacob.
KMM is often regarded as the
precursor of the ‘Malay Left’
Modern Malay politics is said to
have divided into a ‘left’ and a
‘right’ stream from the 1930s. This
book makes this largely academic
debate available to a wider
public, contextualising KMM’s
founding within early 20th century transformations of
Malay and Malayan society—especially the emergence of
an elite alienated from, and dissatisfied with, traditional
court-based power. It argues that the Malay Left emerged
within the new elite’s two-pronged struggle: against
colonialism and against the traditional rulers who were
the only ones allowed a ‘voice’. A good read for anyone
wishing to go beyond the generally airbrushed and bland
versions of Malay, Malayan, and Malaysian history.

This book is a welcome compilation
of short but thoughtful pieces by
a prominent sociologist, Collin
Abraham, which indicate his
concerns over issues of everyday
manifestations of social life in
Malaysia ranging from business

What I find to be most moving and
intellectually satisfying here is that
they are the empathic observations

Abu Samah Mohd Kassim:
Pejuang Kiri Kemerdekaan Zuriat Datuk
Bahaman
A much-needed introduction to
the history of a significant minority community in Malaysia, the
Indians, this book was written
several years before the Hindraf
rallies of 2007. It is a balanced,
scholarly yet readable account
of the origins, contributions, and
continuing divisions and problems
faced by this diverse community.
The focus is on those who migrated or were brought to work in
colonial plantations and the civil service in the late 19th
and early 20th century. Both educated and poor labouring classes came to this nation, and were part and parcel
of its growth, prosperity and political upheavals. Readers are also reminded of the important, centuries-old,
precolonial ties between India and Southeast Asia—links
that deeply influenced religion, culture and trade, including in the Malay peninsula. It is hoped that this book will
be the springboard for more rational discussion, and informed public debates and policies about the Malaysian
Indians, including its poorest, most marginalized, sections.

For many people, history is often a boring flurry of dates,
treaties and pompous princes. In Where Monsoons Meet,
Malaysian history is re-presented as a series of amusing
(yet painlessly instructive) cartoons. Stretching from the
Malacca Sultanate in 1400s to the granting of Merdeka and
the Federation of Malaya in 1957.
Some notable highlights include the squabble of colonial
powers over Malacca, the fierce rebellion of the Malayan
people against the establishment of British indirect rule,
the gallant resistance against the Japanese occupation, the
drastic British measures taken to suppress the anticolonial
struggle during the ‘Emergency’ and the formation of
the various political parties forces of the period before
‘independence’.

Malaysian homes and a must read for anyone aged 12 to

This book explores issues, raises
questions and illuminates the
complexities involved in developing
an
indigenous,
culturally
appropriate, social work practice
in a culturally diverse region in
Sarawak. Using border crossings
as the central metaphor, the author
explores the local help-seeking
and help-giving experiences which
provides insightful data leading
to clear articulation of the way
forward to indigenising social
work. The implications raised by this book are not only
relevant to Sarawak, but also to the social work profession’s
grappling with the issue of appropriate practice in
multicultural settings anywhere. The exploration of culture,
research and ways of knowing will also be of great interest
to students and scholars in Social Sciences. The themes of
searching from within, of uplifting indigenous knowledge,
of decolonising research methodologies within the lines
of this book will strike a chord among all those who have
traversed, or are exploring this journey.

The Unmaking of Malaysia
Ahmad Mustapha Hassan
This book represents the first insider
account of the post-independence
administrations of Malaysia in
the 1970s and 1980s. The author,
Ahmad Mustapha Hassan, was
a nationalist and socialist in his
youth as well as an active member
of the student movement and
UMNO youth. Mustapha takes the
reader through the various phases
of his involvement in the country’s
administration and in UMNO
politics during the country’s formative years. In particular,
he focuses on the various facets of the administration of
Tun Razak and that of Dr Mahathir. The author believes
that Dr Mahathir has sown the seeds of hatred and disunity
among the Malays by clinging stubbornly to his perceived
vision and dealing ruthlessly with his opposition during his
22-year tenure.

Towards a Competitive Malaysia:
Development Challenges in the 21st Century
M. Bakri Musa
Malaysia’s foremost challenges
are the fragmentation of its
society and the deterioration of
its institutions. Social stability
is a prerequisite for economic
growth, and effective institutions
are needed for optimizing it. The
deepening polarization of the
Malays poses a far greater threat
than the more readily recognized
divisions between the races, and
Malaysian institutions are fast
losing their integrity and effectiveness through the twin
blights of corruption and incompetence. The author argues
that Malaysia should integrate its economy with those of
Brunei and Indonesia (IMB) instead of the ambitious and
unattainable ASEAN common market.

Economic Liberalization, Globalization,
Poverty & Inequality
Edited by Jomo K.S. with Jacques Baudot
Many mainstream economists
have claimed that globalization
creates worldwide growth, and
that economic liberalization will
lead to economic convergence and
lower inequality. It is now clear that
since the 1980s the world economy
has experienced slower growth as
well as greater inequalities at the
national level. The research in this
volume provides rigorous empirical
analyses of how economic liberalization has actually affected inequality, poverty and
development in recent decades. This book provides
a balanced account of recent trends, the effects of
globalization and liberalization, and the comparative
experiences of countries that have pursued different
economic policies and trajectories.

Beyond Chinatown:
The Resistible Rise of Market
Fundamentalism:
New Chinese Migration & the Global
Expansion of China
Rethinking Development Policy in an
Unbalanced World
Mette Thuno
Richard Kozul-Wright and Paul Rayment
Chinese migration no longer has the exceptional and
ambivalent nature of earlier times when virtual slaves
dreamed of returning home to China as rich men but instead
settled in Chinatowns across the globe. The products of
economic liberalization, most migrants now leave China for
a more promising future and often find ways to bring their
families with them. The rise of China in a globalizing world
is having a major impact on Chinese migrant communities.
Today, China matters—all around the world. Both its
insatiable demand for raw materials and its flood of
exported manufactures affect everyone; distant corners of
the Third World that once had never heard of China now
have a thriving Chinese presence. And third-generation
Chinese living outside China now proudly proclaim their
ethnic identity. A fresh look at Chinese migration and
required reading for anyone interested in today’s changing
global landscapes.
"Stablise, liberalise and privatise"
has, since the debt crisis of the
early 1980s, been the mantra
chanted at developing countries
with quasi-religious conviction by
international financial institutions,
donor countries and newspaper
columnists. Policy debate has
increasingly polarised into the
rhetoric of extremes: trade
liberalisers versus protectionists,
cosmopolitan versus nationalist,
the right-thinking versus the wrong
-headed, and so on. In The Resistible Rise of Market
Fundamentalism Richard Kozul-Wright and Paul Rayment
expose the mix of selective evidence, mythical economic
history, simplistic assumptions and opportunistic bias which
comprise this prescription for economic development.

possibilities for Thai women to
take proactive initiatives that aim
to transform Thai politics into
being more gender aware and equal? In seeking to address
these and related issues, the analysis brings together
a complex interplay of factors, such as traditional Thai
views of gender and politics; the national and local political
context of the new Thai constitution of 1997; and recent
experiences of selected women politicians in the legislative
and executive branches of Thai government.

Creating Laos:
The Making of a Lao Space Between
Indochina & Siam, 1860 - 1945
Soren Ivarsson
The existence of Laos today is taken
for granted. But the crystallization
of a Lao national idea and ultimate
independence for the country was
a long and uncertain process. This
book examines the process through
which Laos came into existence
under French colonial rule through
to the end of World War II.
Rather than assuming that the Laos
we see today was an historical
given, the book looks at how
Laos's position at the intersection of two conflicting spatial
layouts of ‘Thailand’ and ‘Indochina’ made its national form
a particularly contested process.

Income Distribution & Sustainable
Economic Development in East Asia:
Power, Resistance & Women
Politicians in Cambodia:
Ragayah Hj. Mat Zin & Medhi Krongkaew
Mona Lilja
The East Asian region has
experienced high economic growth
for several decades. While this
rapid growth has managed to bring
down poverty incidence in all the
eight countries studied (China,
Indonesia,
Korea,
Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
and Vietnam), income inequality
in these countries seems to be
widening.
Each
chapter
concludes with several policy
recommendations
to
improve
income distribution and achieve sustainable growth.
This book focuses on Cambodian
female politicians and the strategies
they deploy in their attempts to
destabilize the cultural boundaries
and hierarchies that restrain them.
In particular, the book focuses on
how women use discourses and
identities as means of resistance,
a concept only recently of wide
interest among scholars studying
power. The value of this book
is thus twofold: not only does
it give a unique insight into the
struggles of Cambodian women but also offers new insights
to studies of power.

The Sociology of Southeast Asia:
Lost Goddesses:
Transformation in a Developing Region
Victor T. King
One of the main problems faced by
teachers and students who have
a scholarly interest in Southeast
Asia is the lack of general, userfriendly texts in the social sciences.
The absence of an introduction to
the sociology of Southeast Asia
is especially unfortunate. It is the
aim of this volume to meet these
needs. This is, then, the first soleauthored introductory sociology
text on Southeast Asia that focuses
on change and development in the
region, provides an overview of the important sociological
and political economy writings, and considers the key
concepts and themes in the field since 1945. Some multiauthored works do exist but these either are outdated
or focus on specialized topics. Aimed primarily at
undergraduates up to the final year, it will also be a useful
reference work for postgraduates and researchers who lack
such a general work.

The Denial of Female Power in Cambodian
History
Trudy Jacobsen
This is the first study ever to
address the place of women in
Cambodian history. A narrative
and visual tour de force, it
revises accepted perspectives
in the history and geopolitical
organization of Cambodia since
c. 230 C.E. In so doing, the book
examines the relationship between
women and power and analyses
the extent of female political and
economic participation as revealed
in historical sources, including the
ways in which women were represented in art and
literature.
This study will be of interest to scholars working in history,
anthropology, gender studies, politics, religion, Cambodian/

Women’s Political Participation and
Representation in Asia:
Obstacles and Challenges
This book attempts to engage the problematic of ethnicity
and nation-building by using both historical and comparative
perspectives. Taking the three former British colonies in
the Asia-Pacific region—Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Fiji—
which have their own specific problems and challenges in
managing ethnic diversity and nation-building, this book
addresses three inter-related questions. First, what was
the nature of the envisioning of the nation at the time of
independence? What were the forces and thinking behind
such envisioning, and their implications for the postindependence era? Second, what are the implications
of various public policies that have been put in place in
crafting the nation and building the state during the postindependence era? Third, what are the new re-imaginings
of the nation among various groups, expressed in various
forms of contestations and attempts at accommodation or
reconciliation? What are their possible impacts upon the
future of these nations?

Pesticides & Breast Cancer:
A Wake up Call
Have the Internet and new technologies brought about
a more informative, independent or socially responsible
media, or helped create more space to push for human
rights and democracy? How are the pressures from the oftinvoked ‘market’ shaping trends in reporting and ownership
of media in Asia? Barring a few gems here and there, the
product of those transformative years has been anything
but desirable. In many countries in Asia, the sacred walls
of separation between editorial and marketing functions
are breaking down, making way for the commercialisation
of media and concentration of media ownership. These, in
turn, raise questions about whether media have become just
another business product, and how media can keep to their
function of being watchdogs. Be it in Pakistan or China,
Indonesia, Thailand or India, many among the region’s
dominant media have metamorphosed into advertisement
delivery vehicles for ever-hungry corporate masters.

Many would blame Malaysia's
current political upheaval on
decades of ineptitude, abuse,
and race-based politics. Although
the electoral "tsunami" suggest
a rejection of past methods, an
alignment on the way forward
remains in doubt.
RESET examines the fundamentals
of Malaysia's socio-political fabric

analysis of the underlying causes
of the nation's current political crisis. It reveals our collective

RESET is meant for all Malaysians (no matter their political

Journey Towards Clean and Fair Elections
Only when elections are clean
and fair, can citizens be real
masters of their own destiny
and expect holders of public
office to act accountably and
effectively. As long as citizens
do not have the power to ‘throw
the rascals out’, the hope for
rule of law, human rights protection, good governance
and sustainable development will be at the mercy of selfinterested politicians. Series of meetings were organized
by BERSIH since then until BERSIH decided to organized
The People’s Gathering at the heart of Kuala Lumpur on
10 November 2007. The book showed how undemocratic
Malaysians were treated when they wanted to express
their grievances with the unfair elections system.
This book will definitely contribute as part of the modern

berbahasa Melayu. Diilhamkan dari konsep sastera
pakaibuang (disposable literature) yang dipelopori penulis
Yahudi kelahiran Vienna, Hermann Broch, ia diharap

The Malays:
Malaysia Human Rights Report
2007:
Their Problems and Future
Syed Husin Ali
Civil and Political Rights
The Malays as an ethnic group
has been defined on the basis
of both legal-constitutional and
historical-cultural factors. While it
is difficult to speculate or visualise
correctly the future of any country
or people, it is possible to provide
a general outline of the trends of
the past and present, and probably
attempt to at least indicate what
should be avoided and promoted
to ensure a better future. This
is what Dr Syed Husin Ali
attempts in this book. In nine chapters, he discusses the
Malays and their origin, history, religion, economy, politics
and development up to the present day. He connects all of
these to the various changes in the forms of modernisation
and development programmes which affected, and
continue to impact upon, the Malays. Three decades have
passed since the book was first published. During that
time many changes have taken place in the country. But
the basic problems facing the Malays, contends the writer,
have remained the same. The current controversies on
the declining power of the Malays, as perceived by some,
affirm these problems, and make the book more relevant.

SUARAM’s annual report is the
most objective, comprehensive
and
dependable
source
of
information on the state of human
rights in Malaysia. This edition
reports on various areas and cases
of the failure of state institutions
to safeguard human rights.
In 2007 the government continued
to drag its feet on the most crucial
of 125 recommendations by the
Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and
Management of the Royal Malaysian Police. Draconian
laws, such as the Internal Security Act, were used to detain
individuals without trial. Other laws, including the Printing
Presses and Publications Act and the Sedition Act were
invoked to curb basic freedoms of expression, assembly,
and association.
The politicisation of Islam in recent years has also
resulted in violations of human rights. 2007 saw cases
of persecution of Muslims who chose to renounce Islam
or practice religious teachings other than Sunni Islam.
We also document cases in which the rights of refugees,
asylum-seekers and migrants in Malaysia were violated,
in particular by the empowering of RELA volunteers as
bounty hunters to round up “illegal immigrants”.

his columns published between

from

many fundamental requirements
of a competitive knowledge-based economy need to be
addressed—whatever the political landscape. Among other
critical issues, Ooi asks: Is it time for market intervention?

MAY 13:
Declassified Documents on the Malaysian
Riots of 1969
Kua Kia Soong
This is the first credible account
of the May 13, 1969 racial riots in
Malaysia, using recently declassified
documents at the Public Records
Office, London. These documents
provide the only available confidential
observations and memoranda by
British and other foreign embassy
operatives based on their intelligence
and contacts with local officials and
politicians. Kua Kia Soong argues
that the “May 13 incident” was by no means a spontaneous
outburst of violence between Malays and Chinese but rather
a planned coup d’etat by the ascendant state capitalist
class against the Tunku-led aristocracy. He discusses the
contradictions of the post-Independence Alliance racial
formula and traces the rise of this new Malay capitalist class
which has ruled Malaysia since 1969. These documents
clearly show who were responsible for the violence and pose
the question why the security forces allowed the violence to
go on. With this publication, it is hoped that the frequently
raised “spectre of May 13” by the Barisan Nasional
government will be forever put to rest.

Religion under Siege:
Social Science &
Malaysian National Development
Lina Joy, the Islamic State and
Freedom of Faith
Edited by Abdul Rahman Embong
Edited by Nathaniel Tan and John Lee
Malaysia’s religious diversity is
both a treasured element of its
nationhood and a powder keg.
This book traces recent events in
Malaysia that have been lightning
rods for contention over the
question of freedom of religion.
The book deals with the conversion
of Lina Joy/Azlina Jailani and the
question of whether Malaysia is
an Islamic state, as are issues
such as the Moorthy burial and the
demolition of places of worship.
The entire spectrum of opinion and passions with regard
to religion in Malaysia has been gathered in one book,
ranging from religious fundamentalists and conservatives
to liberal progressives and, most importantly, the majority
that lies in between. The picture that they paint together
reflect the true breadth and width of feelings surrounding
the relationship between Malaysians, their faiths, and the
faiths of their neighbours.
Before Merdeka and Fifty Years After
(Volume 1)
This book focuses on the ethnic
Chinese contribution to Malaysia.
The areas and extent of Chinese
contributions are multi-faceted.
The present study deals with the
more crucial areas that determine
the vigour and durability of the
Malaysian nation-state. These
are identified as the economic,
political and cultural aspects of life
that combine to make what it is
today and that will have a profound
influence on its future prospects.

This volume addresses critical issues arising from social
transformation in Malaysia during the past half century.
The challenge for Malaysia today is to what extent it can
move forward by strengthening socio-cultural resources,
preserving natural resources, especially the environment,
raising the quality of education, enhancing human capital
and utilising all talents fairly and judiciously. This is the
crux of sustainable human development, of which social
development is a major component. The role of social
science research to monitor social transformation and
promote sustainable human development thus becomes all
the more crucial. This volume is an important publication
which should be a companion for researchers, policymakers, students, NGOs and the general public concerned
with sustainable human development.

Public Policy & marginalized Groups
Edited by Phua Kai Lit
Malaysian society has undergone
significant transformation. Social
change, often directly spurred by
new directions in public policy, have
been especially noticeable after
the unfortunate events of May
1969 and after the ascendancy
of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as
Prime Minister. Malaysia’s recent
economic success has been
accompanied by social, cultural
and environmental problems as
well as those of Marginalized
groups. These have given rise to the necessity of managing
them through public policy responses, e.g. government
action to deal with demographic change such as heavy
undocumented immigration of foreigners, significant
environmental deterioration, higher crime rates and
changing concepts of identity as examplified by debates
over Islamisation and the role of women (especially Muslim
women) in Malaysian society.

Teachers against Colonialism in
Post-war Singapore and Malaya
Kua Busan
The education services in Singapore and Malaya after the
Japanese Occupation was plagued by low morale, racial
discrimination, social inequalities and a deeply segmented
and divisive hierarchy, ridden with serious anomalies and
wage injustices. This study recounts the struggle by early
teacher unionists, led by P.V. Sarma, Yap Thean-chye and
H.N. Balhetchet, to form the Singapore Teachers’ Union
(STU) in September 1946. Despite strong opposition by the
colonial government, the STU succeded in getting teachers
in peninsular Malaya to replace their effete teachers’
associations with unions within a year. Teachers unionists
soon became part of the anti-colonial struggle, and fought
for a politcally free, united, fair, progressive and democratic
nation, viewing education as a vital force in its making. An
ispirational book dismantling the myth of passivity prevalent
in today’s Malaysian education system.

way to avoid this possibility is to

Agrarian Transformation in the Uplands of
Sarawak
R.A. Cramb
This book examines the role of
community, market and state in
the historic transformation of
upland livelihoods in Southeast
Asia. Focusing on the Saribas Iban
of Sarawak, the book combines
in-depth, generation-long village
case studies with an account of
changes in land use and tenure
at the regional level spanning a
century and a half. This analysis
demonstrates that, far from being
passive victims of globalization,
the Iban have been active agents in their own transformation,
engaging with both market and state while retaining
community values and governance. The book offers a
fascinating, empirically rich account of interest to scholars,
development practitioners and the general reader alike
When the rights of several groups
intersect, whose rights are to be
upheld? Who makes the decision to
privilege the rights of some people
over the other? Is it possible to
reach a consensus or compromise
where everybody feels their rights
have been respected? These
are but some of the important
questions and contested issues
this book seeks to raise for public
discourse.

Who Needs An Islamic State?
(2nd Ed.)
The Meaning of The Holy Qur’an
Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Abdelwahab El-Affendi
A critique of modern Islamic
political thought on the ‘state’,
this book takes the form of a
three-part dialogue with the
West, with Islamic tradition
and with 20th-century Muslim
thinkers. The author discusses
the divide between Islamic values
and the basic principles which
guide Western political thought.
He traces the development of
Muslim constitutional practice and
considers the current debate on
the nature of and desirability for an ‘Islamic state’. He
separates the problems that are internally derived from
by-products of Western culture. Dr El-Affendi argues that
if Islamic values were brought to bear internationally, the
entrenched dogmas of Western political thought as much
as both the tradition-bound and modernist trends of Muslim
thinking would have to be revised.
A must-read for those interested in the theory of the
Islamic State. This second editions contains a Foreword
by Professor Ziauddin Sardar, a new Introduction by the
author, and two new sections as appendices.
This is the Book; in it is guidance
sure, without doubt, to those who
fear Allah. Who believe in the
Unseen, are steadfast in prayer,
and spend out of what We have
provided for them. And who believe
in the Revelation sent to thee, and
sent before thy time, and (in their

Hereafter.
They are on (true) guidance, from
their Lord, and it is these who will prosper.

dengan kebanyakan buku lain yang
membincangkan hanya aspek
tertentu dari Quran. Pengarang

banyak menggunakan pendekatan
“Quran

untuk
membincangkan
tematema tentang Tuhan, manusia,

This book tells the story of a

was struck by the grandeur of the

Moses & Pharaoh in The Bible,
Qur’an & History
Islam in Southest Asia
Hussin Mutalib
Maurice Bucaille
The holy scriptures of the three
Abrahamic religions share some
of the main aspects of historical
events which happened after
Prophet Abraham. One topic which
reveals many such shared aspects
is the story of Moses who rose
up against the despotic Pharaoh.
The events during the period are
important to the Muslims, Jews
and Christians, and in many cases
form the basis of the history and
rituals of the three religions. This
work is a comparative study of the Biblical and Qur’anic
narrations of the story of Moses and Pharaoh. In doing
so, Dr Maurice Bucaille, author of the bestselling 1976
treatise, The Bible, The Qur’an and Science, carefully
avoids theoretical and speculative views in an attempt to
cope only with facts.

the changes that they experience.
How, for instance, does a Chinese
relate to Chineses culture after
embracing Islam? What are the

terms of customs and ways of
living? The task of the study is
to evaluate these changes in the
context of various situations in Malaysia.
Islam is a major religion in Southeast Asia, with Indonesian Muslims comprising the largest Muslim
population in the world. Events and
developments since 11 September
2001 have added greater attention
to Islam and its adherents in this
part of the world.
This general survey of Islam in
Southeast Asia is intended to inform, explain and update readers
about the more significant aspects
of Islam in Southeast Asia, then and now. These include
the following: the geographical origins and sources by
which the faith spread in this region; the social, economic
and political profiles of the Muslim communities; relations
between Muslims and non-Muslims and between Muslims
and the State; the strands and trends that shapes the
role of Islam and the Muslims in the national body politic;
and the challenges confronting Muslims in confronting
the vicissitudes of their lives in this era of rapid change,
characterized by modernization, capitalism, secularization
and globalization. The discussion will begin with an
overview of the broad picture of Islam and the Muslims
in the region as a whole, covering both Muslim-majority
and Muslim-minority countries. This will be followed by
case-study analysis of Islam and the Muslims in individual
countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand,

Islam, Islamization &

A Young Muslim’s Guide to the
Modern World
Challenges and Prospects
Seyyed Hossein Nasr
Norani Othman
Dominant patterns of Islamic
thought and the widely prevailing
practices of Muslim governance
and statehood, as well as popular
religious education and training, do
not inspire any great confidence
in the inclination or sensitivity
of most mainstream Muslims
and the dominant institutions of
contemporary Islamic states and
societies toward the prerequisites
and processes of democratization.
These include the pursuit of, and achieving of, an internal or
Muslim cultural and intellectual renewal, education reform
particularly religious schools and higher education, and a
basic shift in the Muslim worldview enabling Muslim to
come to terms with their own civilizational heritage. In this
rethinking and democratic renovation of Islamic civilization
Muslim women and the movements of Islamic feminism
have an important role to play.

The philosophical, cultural, political,
economic and social impact of the
domination of the modern West
continues in one way or another
through the width and breadth of
the Muslim world, threatening not
only the traditional institutions of
Islamic society, but Islamic religion
itself. Many are alienated from
Islam as a result of the crushing
influence of alien ideologies, whilst
others react mostly with emotional
outbursts and occasional violence.
This book, written by one of contemporary Islamic
scholarship’s best minds, addresses primarily Muslim
youths in a language which is fairly simple rather than
being excessively scholarly, to be able to respond to the
challenges posed by the modern world and its current
ideologies.

the number of the chapter determines how many sentences
are given in the paragraphs.
This is a compilation of the
author’s articles which appeared
in his column “First Things First”
in Muslim current affairs magazine
Impact International. Covering a
wide spectrum of Islamic topics of
contemporary relevance, they aim
at providing reflection, exposition,
and inspiration. Inspired by
renowned scholars such as Ashraf
Ali Thanvi, Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi,
Taqi Usmani, among others, the
author makes the Qur’an and
Sunnah of the Prophet as a guide to observe contemporary
issues facing Muslims, both individually and collectively as
an Ummah.

European Integration:
Indonesian Syariah:
J Oerstroem Moeller
M. B. Hooker
A clear guide to current EU
institutions,
practices,
and
policies, this is also an informed
insider’s account of how they have
emerged in their present form,
with clues on future change. The
mixture of analysis and history,
description and prescription, works
well, because the author has had
a ringside seat, but retains a cool
Nordic non-partisan detachment.
The hints he offers to those, for
example in Asia, considering
following a similar path to regional integration, represent
the distilled wisdom of a career in balancing economic
benefits and national sensitivities. As his story shows, it
can be done. - Lord Kerr, Former Head of the UK Diplomatic
Service, now Chairman of Imperial College, London and
Deputy Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell.
The creation of a national school of
Islamic law in Indonesia has been
on the legal agenda for the past
fifty years. This book is a summary
of what has been achieved. The
material shows us a complex range
of references for syariah. These
include the formal structures of
a “new fiqh”, philosophies of law,
transmissions of syariah through
tertiary curricula and the Friday
sermon in mosques, a bureaucratic
form for conducting the Hajj, and
contemporary debates on syariah values as expressions of
public morality. Together these references indicate just how
elusive the meaning of syariah has become in contemporary
Indonesia.

Dr. Maung Maung:
Integrating Economies in Southest Asia
Gentleman, Scholar, Patriot
Ikuo Kuroiwa & Toh Mun Heng
Robert H. Taylor
Dr Maung Maung (1925-94) was
a man of many parts: scholar,
soldier, nationalist, internationalist,
parliamentarian,
and
public
servant. His life spanned seven
decades of political, economic and
social turbulence in the country
he loved and served, Myanmar.
A pioneer amongst post-colonial
journalists in Southeast Asia, he
was equally at home in the libraries
and seminars of universities in
the United States, Europe and Australia during the Cold
War. As a jurist, Dr Maung Maung knew the law must
remain relevant to changing societal requirements.
In this book, the focus is on
how developing economies in
Southeast Asia ride on the wave
of globalization that brings about
benefits and economic growth with
expanding trade and investment
linkages. The central concept
used in this study is production
networks and industrial clusters.
With examples from Indonesia
and
Malaysia
(electronics
industry), Singapore (biomedical
science industry), and Thailand
(automotive industry), the book explains how production
networks and industrial clusters have played crucial roles
in their industrial development.

Creating “Greater Malaysia”:
Thai Capital After The 1997 Crisis
Tan Tai Yong
Pasuk Phongpaichit & Chris Baker
This book offers an in-depth and
detailed analysis of the political
processes that led to formation
of the Federation of Malaysia in
1963. It argues that the Malaysia
that came into being following
the amalgamation of Malaya,
Singapore, Sarawak and North
Borneo was a political creation
whose only rationale was that it
served a convergence of political
and economic expediency for
the departing colonial power, the
Malayan leadership and the ruling party of self-governing
Singapore.
The 1997 crisis was not only a
massive shock but also a major
turning point for Asian economies.
In Thailand, it marked the end of
an era when the economy was
powered by local entrepreneurship.
Around a quarter of major business
groups were wrecked. Foreign
capital poured in. The engine of
growth is now an export economy
dominated by multinationals, while
domestic capital is confined to
service and rentier activities. This book also discusses
the political consequences and policy implications of this
major change, and questions whether domestic capital in
countries like Thailand has any future in a globalized world
economy.

The Karen revolution in Burma:

This study analyses the various
types and stages of conflict
that have been experienced by
diverse groups and generations
of Karen over the six decades
of armed conflict between the
Karen National Union (KNU) and
successive Burmese governments.
Instead of focusing on those who
are internally displaced, those in
the refugee camps on the ThaiBurma border or living abroad,
or those in the KNU, it places
particular emphasis on the “other” Karen, or the majority
segment of the Karen population living inside Burma, a
population that has hitherto received little scholarly and
journalistic attention. It also assesses the Karen people’s
varied attitudes toward a number of political organizations
that claim to represent their interests, toward successive
Burmese military regimes, and toward the political issues
that led to the original divide between “accommodators”
and “rebels.”

Ageing in Southest & East Asia:

Southeast

East
Asian
countries are undergoing varying
stages of population ageing. The
social, economic and political
implications of population ageing
will be enormous, and because
of the fast speed of ageing in the
region, the countries cannot afford
the luxury of time for the gradual
evolution of social and structural
support systems and networks for
the older population. The essays
in this volume critically examine
national ageing policies and programmes, the sustainability
of existing pension systems, housing and living
arrangements, inter-generational transfer, and aspects of
quality of life of the elderly population. While the findings
show that most Southeast Asian countries have started
to formulate and implement national ageing policies, they
also indicate that the existing policies are by and large
inadequate and underdeveloped in serving the needs of the
older population and indeed much more must be done to
prepare for the future.

This a study of the political
development of the Malaysian state
of: Sabah under the administration
of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Jelata
Sabah (Berjaya Sabah Peoples
United Party).The book argues that
the emergence of a developmental
discourse under the Berjaya regime
in Sabah can largely be traced to
its failure to reconcile the localized
ethnic politics of Sabah with the
demands of a strong central state
and thus the need to find an alternative strategy of political
support and control. While this strategy proved effective
when developmental growth was high during the first.
Berjaya administration (1976-81), the relative collapse of
the state economy from 1982 onwards exposed its ethnic
predilections and prefigured declining support for the regime,
particularly among the non-Muslim bumiputera groups.

Modernity & Re-enchantment:
Religion in Post-revolutionary Vietnam
ASEAN
edited by Philip Taylor
Rodolfo C Severino
Written by one of ASEAN’s exSecretary Generals, this is an
essential, and accessible, guide
to the labyrinthine moves of
ASEAN since its founding in 1967.
It has successfully engaged the
world's major powers, in East Asia
and beyond. ASEAN has taken
steps to integrate the regional
economy as an important means
of cooperatively improving the
region's competitiveness, attracting
investments, generating jobs,
raising incomes, and lowering costs and prices. ASEAN has
also formed networks for dealing with regional problems
like communicable diseases, environmental degradation,
and transnational crime.
The richness and vibrancy of Vietnamese spirituality are
vividly portrayed in these twelve essays that shed light on
the remarkable reflorescence of religion in this communist
country. Ancestor worship, mediumship, sacrifies, and
communal rituals have not only survived Vietnam’s
reintegration into the capitalist world; they are intrinsic
to the dramatic reshaping of its contemporary social and
cultural life. Transnational Buddhism and Christianity
challenge the political status quo as they answer conflicting
aspirations for enlightenment, justice, national development
and cultural identity. Making conceptual contributions to
anthropology and comparative religion, this book provides
insights fromm post-revolutionary Vietnam into the diverse
passages to re-enchantment in the modern world.

Divinity and Diversity:
A Hindu Revitalization Movement in Malaysia
Legacies of World War II in South
and East Asia
Alexandra Kent
edited by David Koh Wee Hock
This book looks closely at the
Malaysian
following
of
the
contemporary Indian godman,
Sathya Sai Baba, a neo-Hindu guru
famed for his miracle-working. The
“911” attacks on the United States
and subsequent “war on terrorism”
have brought a discussion of
transnational “religious” networks
onto centrestage. While the Sai
Baba movement has no militaristic
ideology, it may ---- like any other
such movement ---- ultimately call into question the
sovereignty of the nation state. Today, then, issues of faith
and devotion are more urgent than ever in the interfaces
between diverse world-views, not only at local and national
levels but, increasingly, at the global level as well.
Sixty years after the end of World War II, the political
and social fallout from the War is alive and divisive, as
scholars in this volume show. One example is how former
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visit to the
Yasukuni Shrine prevented China, Japan and South Korea
from sitting down together to talk about Northeast Asian
integration, and wider Asian integration. Another example
is the question of comfort women. Former Japanese Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe’s statement—that there is no evidence
that Japan’s government or army forced women to work in
military brothels during the War—appeared to go back on
a 1993 apology for the comfort women. How such issues
of history are dealt with by countries of this region has an
effect on contemporary relations among the major powers
contending for leadership in East Asia.

Democratization

Indonesia
has altered the political decisionmaking processes in many
ways. It has also brought about
tremendous change to the role of
the Indonesian parliament in the
country’s political system. Once
characterized as a powerless

developed into a comprehensive
and more representative body
able to fulfil its functions more
adequately. The author analyses
the parliament’s contribution towards the process of

to research on the Indonesian democratization process,

transition processes in general.

Shari’a & Constitutional Reform in
Indonesia
Nadirsyah Hosen
This book focuses on constitutional
reform in Indonesia (1999-- 2002)
from the perspective of shari’a.
Since the end of Soeharto’s
New Order government in 1998,
Indonesia, the largest Muslim
country in the world, has amended
the 1945 Constitution four times.
Soeharto’s departure also opened
the way for several Muslim groups
and political parties to propose
the introduction of shari’a into
the Constitution. This book poses
the crucial question implicit in the
amendments to the 1945 Constitution: can shari’a and
democratic constitutionalism be fused without compromising
on human rights, the rule of law, and religious liberty? The
contributions of Islamic political parties in Indonesia to the
process and the outcome of the amendments, by adopting a
substantive shari’a approach, reflect the ability to deal with
a modern Constitution without abandoning the principles
and the objectives of shari’a.

Language, Nation and Development
in Southeast Asia
Whither the Philippines in the
21st Century?
Edited by Lee Hock Guan and Leo Suryadinata
Edited by Rodolfo C Severino, Lorraine Carlos Salazar
Language policies in Southeast
Asia have been shaped by nationbuilding and political and economic
forces. In the immediate postcolonial years, new Southeast
Asian nations endeavoured to coopt, ignore or dissolve the troubling
multitudes of ethnic identities
within their borders by imposing
national languages and veritable
monolingualism. In recent years,
national language policies have
been increasingly influenced by
pragmatism: many Southeast Asian states have become
less insistent on promoting monolingualism in recognition
of the need for populations which are bilingual in the major
languages of commerce, especially English and Chinese.
Reassessing the fascinating and
puzzling “Philippines conundrum”
from various angles, the analyses
contribute sharp and fresh insights
into a variety of areas including:
the presidency and political
parties; constitutional change
and federalism; the roles of the
military, religion, and the media in
politics; the conflict in Mindanao;
the
communist
insurgency;
macroeconomic
developments,
issues, and trends; the investment climate and business
opportunities; poverty, unemployment, and income
inequality; migration and remittances; and the Philippine
development record in comparative perspective.
An evaluation of the successes and drawbacks of language
policies in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines,
Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar, this book is an invaluable
primer on this linguistically complex region and a resource
for scholars, policy-makers, and civil society activists.

God Dies by the Nile
Nawal El Saadawi
Nawal el Saadawi’s classic tale
attempts to square Islam with
a society in which women are
respected as equals is as relevant
today as ever.
‘People have become corrupt
everywhere. You can search in vain
for Islam, or a devout Muslim. They
no longer exist.’
This powerful account of the
oppression of women in the Muslim
world remains as shocking today as
when it was first published, more
than a quarter of a century ago.
Nawal El Saadawi writes out of
a powerful sense of the violence
and injustice which permeated her
society. Her experiences working
as a doctor in villages around
Egypt, witnessing prostitution,
honour killings and sexual abuse, including female
circumcision, drove her to give voice to this suffering.
She goes on explore the causes of the situation through a
discussion of the historical role of Arab women in religion
and literature. Saadawi argues that the veil, polygamy and
legal inequality are incompatible with the essence of Islam
or any human faith.
This edition, complete with a new foreword, lays claim to
The Hidden Face of Eve’s status as a classic of modern
Arab writing.

Exploited:
Afghan Women:
Toby Shelley
Elaheh Rostami-Povey
Migrant Labour in the New Global Economy
From cleaning to construction,
from agriculture to domestic work,
every day migrant labourers are
exploited and enslaved. Extra hours
are squeezed out of Polish food
packers, and trafficked African
children are used for forced labour.
Low wages are used to drive down
prices from the oil industry to
airport services.
33
Identity and Invasion
Through years of Taliban oppression,
during the US-led invasion and
the current insurgency, women in
Afghanistan have played a hugely
symbolic role.
In this book, Toby Shelley shows
that current unprecedented flows
of migrant workers are a direct result of economic
liberalization. The appalling conditions and legal abuses
which confront these workers are not a premodern
aberration, but an integral part of the global economy.
Shelley argues that even governments, keen to protect
big business, are complicit in this exploitation; their ‘law
and order’ approach on immigration being part of this
complicity. Based on interviews and investigations with
workers, unionists and activists, Exploited is a powerful
and shocking read.
This book looks at how women
have fought repression and
challenged stereotypes, both within
Afghanistan and in diasporas in
Iran, Pakistan, the US and the UK.
Looking at issues from violence
under the Taliban and the impact of
9/11 to the role of NGOs and the growth in the opium
economy, Rostami-Povey gets behind the media hype and
presents a vibrant and diverse picture of these women’s lives.
The future of women’s rights in Afghanistan, she argues,
depends not only on overcoming local male domination, but
also on challenging imperial domination and blurring the
growing divide between the West and the Muslim world.
Ultimately, these global dynamics may pose a greater threat
to the freedom and autonomy of women in Afghanistan and
throughout the world.

Rebuilding the Left
Sexualities
Marta Harnecker
Nivedita Menon
Based on a lifetime’s experience
in politics, this book is a critique
of social democratic realpolitik. It
studies the challenges faced by
the left now, and suggests ways to
move forward to build a different
world. The author looks to the
social experiments being carried
out in Latin America today: they
are essentially socialist, democratic
projects in which the people are
the driving force. Rebuilding the
Left offers real hope to those who
believe that an alternative to capitalism is necessary and
possible.
While sexual violence is an area
that is well mapped by feminist
scholarship, this volume will
focus on transgressive and/or
marginalized sexualities. It will
bring together writings on India that
have highlighted the transgression
of norms—of heterosexuality, of
feminine and masculine behaviour,
of recognizably gendered bodies,
that declare ungoverned desire to
be illegitimate. Also included is a
section of select documents from different sexuality
movements in India. This book is part of the series of
Contemporary Indian Feminism.

Building Feminist Movements and
Organizations:
On the Move:
The Caribbean since 1989
Global Perspectives
Alejandra Bronfman
Edited by Lydia Alpzar
The Caribbean stands out in the
popular imagination as a ‘place
without history’, a place which has
somehow eluded modernity. Haiti
is envisioned as being trapped in
an endless cycle of violence and
instability, Cuba as a 1950s time
warp, Jamaicans as ganja-smoking
Rastafarians, while numerous
pristine, anonymous islands are
simply peaceful idylls. The notion
of ‘getting away from it all’ lures
countless visitors, offering the
possibility of total disconnect for the world-weary.
Women’s
organizations
and
movements must be stronger than
ever to be able to hold the line
and continue moving forward the
women’s rights agenda. The many
threats to women’s rights—armed
conflicts, the advance of HIV/
AIDS, rising fundamentalisms and
scarce resources for research—
make a study of the work and
internal dynamics of women’s
and feminist organizations and
movements essential in order to meet these challenges
effectively. Building Feminist Movements is an international
collection of essays and case studies which explores
diverse ways in which women and feminist organizations
and movements are organizing and it also analyses the
important lessons learned in the process.

Geography of Power:
Making Global Economic Policy
Edited by Richard Peet
This
work
looks
at
how
contemporary global economic
policies are made: by which
institutions, under what ideologies,
and how they are enforced. The
author reveals the central roles
played by organizations such as
the IMF and the World Bank in
supervising the livelihoods of
over 2.5 billion people. He shows
that neoliberal economic policy
is enforced by a few thousand
experts in the North and has
failed to deliver tolerable living conditions for the poor. The
conclusion makes a positive contribution by exploring policy
alternatives that point the way forward.

In On the Move Alejandra Bronfman argues that in fact the
opposite is true; the Carribean is, and has always been,
deeply engaged with the wider world. From drugs and
tourism to international political struggles, these islands
form an integral part of world history and of the present, and
are themselves in a constant state of economic and social
flux in the face of global transformations.

The Enemy of Nature
Joel Kovel
We live in and from nature, but the way we have evolved
of doing this is about to destroy us. Capitalism and its
by-products—imperialism, war, neoliberal globalization,
racism, poverty and the destruction of community—are all
playing a part in the destruction of our ecosystem.
Only now are we beginning to realise the depth of the crisis
and the kind of transformation which will have to occur to
ensure our survival. This second, thoroughly updated, edition
of The Enemy of Nature speaks to this new environmental
awareness. Joel Kovel argues against claims that we can
achieve a better environment through the current Western
‘way of being’. By suggesting a radical new way forward, a
new kind of ‘ecosocialism’, Joel Kovel offers real hope and
vision for a more sustainable future.

Feminisms in Development:
From Where We Stand:
Contradictions, Contestations and
Challenges
War, Women’s Activism and Feminist Analysis
Cynthia Cockburn
Edited by Andrea Cornwall and Elizabeth Harrison
This collection of essays by leading
feminist thinkers from North and
South constitutes a major new
attempt to reposition feminism
within development studies.
Feminism’s
emphasis
on
social transformation makes it
fundamental
to
development
studies. Yet the relationship
between the two disciplines has
frequently been a troubled one. At
present, the way in which many development institutions
function often undermines feminist intent through
bureaucratic structures and unequal power quotients.
Moreover, the seeming intractability of inequalities and
injustice in developing countries have presented feminists
with some enormous challenges. Confronting the enormous
challenges for feminisms in development studies, this book
provides real hope for dialogue and exchange between
feminisms and development.

Gender, Race and War in Imperial Democracy
Zillah Eisenstein
In this book, Zillah Eisenstein continues her unforgiving
indictment of neoliberal imperial politics. She charts its
most recent militarist and masculinist configurations
through discussions of the Afghan and Iraq wars,
violations at Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, the 2004
US Presidential election, and Hurricane Katrina. She
warns that women’s rights rhetoric is being manipulated,
particularly by Condoleeza Rice and other women in the
Bush administration, as a ploy for global dominance and
a misogynistic capture of democratic discourse. However,
Eisenstein also believes that the plural and diverse lives of
women will lay the basis for an assault on these fascistic
elements. This new politics will both confound and clarify
feminisms, and reconfigure democracy across the globe.

Why do so many women organize against militarism
and war? And why, very often, do they choose to do so
in women-only groups? This original study, the product
of 80,000 miles of travel by the author over a two-year
period, examines women‘s activism against wars as far
apart as Sierra Leone, Colombia and India. It shows women
on different sides of conflicts in the former Yugoslavia
and Israel refusing enmity, and cooperating for peace. It
describes transnational networks of women opposing US
and Western European militarism and the so-called ‘war on
terror‘.
Women are often motivated by adverse experiences in
the male-led anti-war movements, preferring to choose
different methods of protest and remain in control of their
own actions. But like the mainstream movements, women‘s
groups differ.

Nowhere in the world is China’s
rapid rise to power more evident
than in Africa. From multi-billion
dollar investments in oil and
minerals to the influx of thousands
of merchants, labourers and cheap
consumer goods, China’s economic
and political reach is redefining
Africa’s traditional ties with the
international community. This
book investigates the emerging
relationship between China and
Africa to determine whether this
engagement will be that of a development partner, economic
competitor or new hegemon. Alden argues that in order
to understand Chinese involvement on the continent, we
need to recognize the range of economic, diplomatic and
security rationales behind Beijing’s Africa policy as well as
the response of African elites to China’s entreaties. Only
then can the new challenges and opportunities for Africa
and the West be accurately assessed.

Global Political Parties
Where Now for Palestine?
Katarina Sehm Patomki and Marko Ulvila
Political
space
seems
to
be shrinking, yet the term
‘globalization’ is seldom mentioned
in connection with political parties.
This book asks whether the time
is now ripe for global political
parties.
Though global civil society is
a buzzword, activists seem to
reject the idea of global political
parties as irrelevant. Yet political
parties remain the formal basis for
government both nationally and in the current international
system. Looking to the future, will existing political parties
democratize international governance, or will new political
parties emerge to fill this vacuum? Is this a role that the
World Social Forum can play? Featuring contributions
from major figures from Samir Amin to Jan Aart Scholte,
Global Political Parties is an exciting analysis of what the
globalization of party politics would mean for the nation
state, global governance and democracy worldwide.

Since 2000, the attacks of 9/11, the
death of Arafat and the elections of
Hamas and Kadima have meant
that the Israel/Palestine ‘two-state
solution’ now seems illusory.
This collection critically revisits the
concept of the ‘two-state solution’
and maps the effects of local and
global political changes on both
Palestinian people and politics.
The authors discuss the changing
face of Fateh, Israeli perceptions of Palestine, and the
influence of the Palestinian diaspora. The book also the
analyzes the environmental destruction of Gaza and West
bank, the economic viability of a Palestinian state and the
impact of US foreign policy in the region. This authoritative
and up-to-date guide to the impasse facing the region is
required reading for anyone wishing to understand a conflict
entrenched at the heart of global politics.

Spaces For Change?
The Bible and Zionism:
Invented Traditions, Archaeology and PostColonialism in Palestine-Israel
Nur Masalha
Does the Bible justify Zionism? Since the foundation of the
state of Israel in 1948, Torah and tank have been inseparable,
resulting in the forced expulsion and subjugation of millions
of indigenous Palestinians.
Nur Masalha‘s groundbreaking new book traces Zionism’s
evolution from a European secular settler movement in
the late 19th century to the messianic faith it has become
today. Analysing Zionism’s multiple inventions of tradition,
he shows how the Bible and Biblical archaeology have been
used by many Christian and Jewish Zionists as ‘title deeds’
for the land of Palestine, justifying an apartheid system and
legitimising war crime. With Edward Said, Masalha argues
that a new politics of peace can only be developed through
the advocacy of a single, democratic state, which would
replace religious zealotry with secular equality.

The Politics of Citizen Participation in New
Democratic Arenas
Edited by Andrea Cornwall
This book studies one of the greatest challenges of our
age: building democratic polities where all can realize their
rights and claim substantive citizenship. In recent years,
innovations in governance have created a plethora of new
democratic spaces in many countries. Yet there remains a
gap between the intention to institutionalize participation and
the reality of exclusion of poorer and marginalized citizens.
Through case studies of a diversity of institutions—hospital
facility boards in South Africa, a national-level deliberative
process in Canada, sectoral management councils and
community groups in Brazil, India, Mexico and Bangladesh,
budgeting processes in Argentina, NGO-created forums in
Angola and Bangladesh, community forums in the UK, and
new intermediary spaces created by social movements in
South Africa—contributors examine how the democratic
potential of these new spaces might be enhanced.

Sex at the Margins:
Migration, Labour Markets and the Rescue
Industry
Participation:
The New Tyranny?
Edited by Bill Cooke and Uma Kothari
Laura Maria Agustín
Laura Agustín makes a passionate
case against these stereotypes,
arguing that the label ‘trafficked’
does not accurately describe
migrants’ lives and that the ‘rescue
industry’
disempowers
them.
Based on extensive research
amongst migrants who sell sex and
social helpers, Sex at the Margins
provides a radically different
analysis. Frequently, says Agustín,
migrants make rational choices to
travel and work in the sex industry.
Although they are treated like a marginalised group they
form part of the dynamic global economy.
Both powerful and controversial, this book is essential
reading for all those who want to understand the increasingly
important relationship between sex markets, migration and
the desire for social justice.
This groundbreaking book explodes several myths: that
selling sex is completely different from any other kind of
work; that migrants who sell sex are passive victims; and
that the multitude of people out to save them are without
self-interest.

The State of Resistance:
Popular Struggles in the Global South
Francois Polet
This indispensable book offers a
panorama of social resistances
to neoliberal globalization in
the South. Writers and activists
from forty different countries or
regions offer snapshots of the
latest mobilizations, from the antiprivatization groups in South Africa
and the anti-WTO campaign of
peasants in India, to the indigenous
movement behind Evo Morales
in Bolivia. The book focuses
on a range of diverse popular
struggles that impact on democratic and development
process, yet receive little public attention or are caricatured
by mainstream media. It reveals collective tensions
throughout those societies whose material bases have
been profoundly shaken by a series of adjustments dictated
by the canons of the globalized economy. It is an essential
guide to the latest developments in social movements.
Edited by Francois Polet of the Tricontinental Centre, it
includes contributions from key activists and scholars such
as Vinod Raina, Michel Warschawski, Maristella Svampa
and Mahaman Tidjani.

Who Are We?
What Do We Do?
Gerakbudaya (GB) was founded in 1998 and
is currently based in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
Gerakbudaya distributes books that embody
social awareness, critical and alternative
perspectives, and the hidden histories of
Malaysia, Southeast Asia and the wider
world we live in.
GB titles are found in bookshops large
and small throughout Malaysia and in
Singapore, in all good chain bookstores as
well as independent bookshops and campus
bookstores. In an era where books and
publishing are becoming endangered species,
GB is dedicated to the idea that books really
matter and that they play a key role in the
building of a creative, thoughtful, useful and
progressive life.
We are the sole distributor for the alternative
London-based publishing house, Zedbooks
Publications (Zed) in Malaysia. GB also
distributes books by many important
Malaysian institutes and international
NGOs:
• Institute of Southeast Asian Studies,
Singapore (ISEAS)
• Third World Network (TWN)
• Forum
• INSAN
• Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
Press
• Perak Academy Press
• University Putra of Malaysia (UPM) Press
• International Islamic University of
Malaysia (IIUM)
• Institut Kajian Dasar (IKD)
• The Other Press (TOP)
• Islamic Book Trust (IBT)
• Pesticides Action Network—Asia Pacific
(PANAP)
• Centre for Orang Asli Concerns (COAC)
• Social Science Association of Malaysia
(PSSM)
• Suaram Komunikasi (SUARAM)
• Sisters in Islam (SIS)
Books bring to light or keep focus on issues
silenced, forgotten or deemed too boring by
today’s mass media and culture of apathy,
shopping and forgetting. GB is dedicated
to circulating timely and important books,
breaking down artificial barriers between
writers/thinkers in institutions and everyone
else, and generating informed discussions of
important issues in our lives by providing
different views and fresh insights.
We at GB are also working to expand
links between Malaysian and regional and
international publishers, thus making nonmainstream writers more accessible to a
local audience and vice versa.

About SIRD
SIRD (Strategic Information and Research Development Centre) was founded
as an independent publishing imprint in 2000. SIRD books are distributed
by its sister organization, GB, and aim to contribute to the development of an
intelligent, dynamic, diverse, and democratic Malaysian society.
We also hope to help increase the range of books published locally in both
English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Writing is an art as well as a craft. We are always open to original ideas for
books in our subject areas, but please do contact us to obtain a copy of our
book proposal template first. Guidelines for prospective authors are available
on our website (www.gerakbudaya.com).
