Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum (F-3)
“I choose women who thrive . . .”
Woman as Symbols in the Art
of Ásmundur Sveinsson
A large part of Ásmundur Sveinsson’s art
depict women – from loving mothers to domestic labourers, or gentle creatures to fearless giantess. They are signifiers of common
sentimentalities, or allegories for natural phenomena or literature. The works in the exhibition are selected from the entire career of
the sculptor, giving an oeuvre of Sveinsson’s
work from his early realistic rendition to a much stylised representation
of his female subjects. In the pyramid Ásmundur´s studio has been
recreated to shed some light on his workspace in Sigtún. A lounge
where visitors can view the artist life and work in text and images has
been set up there as well. On display until 17.04.2011

Exhibition
Sculptures by Sigurjón Ólafsson
Sigurjón Ólafsson (1908 – 1982) was born in
Eyrarbakki, a village on the south coast of
Iceland. Trained as a house painter, in 1928
he entered the Danish Royal Academy of Fine
Arts, from which he graduated in 1935, having
supplemented his studies with a year in Rome.
In 1930 he was awarded the Gold Medal of
the Academy for a portrait of his mother.
From early on Ólafsson worked in abstract
forms, but he also developed the realistic style
that characterizes his portrait busts and statues.
He has been named one of his century’s most
important portrait sculptors. In 1939 he made
his first completely abstract sculpture, Man and
Woman, which caused great controversy, but is
now considered a sculptural landmark in Denmark.
Ólafsson returned to Iceland in 1945. As one of
the leading artists of the country, he was entrusted
with numerous challenging commissions, among
them a 90 m long relief at the Búrfell Hydroelectric
Station. He leaves eighteen public monuments in
Reykjavík alone, Throne Pillars by the Höfði House
and Emblem of Iceland being the best known. The
Museum is closed in December.

Ásmundarsafn’s dome, the sound of its space, a computer, a hand
mirror, light projection and a shadow. On display until 17.04.2011
The Culture House (C-2)
Exhibitions reflecting varied aspects of
Icelandic history and culture:
The Medieval Manuscripts – Eddas and Sagas
On view are the ancient vellum manuscripts that preserve the
Northern classical heritage: unique sagas, poems and narratives which are often our sole written sources of information on the society, religion and world view of the people of
Northern Europe.
The Iceland Film
Icelanders
Icelanders is an exhibition of a selection
of photographs from the book of the
same name by author Unnur Jökulsdóttir and photographer Sigurgeir Sigurjónsson, published in 2004. Published
in four language versions – Icelandic,
English, German and French – the book
was very well received both in Iceland
and abroad. It was nominated for the
Icelandic Literary Award. Unnur and Sigurgeir set out to capture the spirit of the
Icelandic nation in words and images:
they travelled all over the country for two
years, visiting people, talking to them
and taking photographs. They found
that there are two nations living in Iceland – the city-dwellers, and the people
who live in the regions: those who live
on remote headlands and upland crofts,
in isolated valleys and fjords far from the
beaten path. These people are attuned
to the land and its nature, moulded by
their environment. And these were the
people who captured their imagination,
and became the subject of the book.
The photographic exhibition Icelanders
has previously been shown at the Nordic
arts festival Les Boréales in France.
On display until 16.01.2011
The Iceland Film exhibition traces for the first time the development of Icelandic filmmaking from its origins around 1904 to the
year 2008. Specially assembled film excerpts give insight into the
atmosphere and theme of significant films. On four “film islands”,
one for each genre; feature film, documentary, short film and literature adaptation, a total of approximately 100 films can be selected
and viewed in full length. Designed in terms of a public archive, the
exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of Icelandic filmmaking and thus Iceland’s social and cultural history over the past
100 years. The composition and structural design of this travelling
exhibition works as an open system: it can be upgraded with new
productions and further historical material. New topics may even
be integrated.
The Library Room
The old reading room of the National Library features an exhibit
selected and arranged by the National and University Library.
On display are many of the landmark books of Icelandic cultural
history, dating from the introduction of printing in the sixteenth
century to the present day. These include the oldest published
versions of the Sagas of Icelanders, Sagas of the Kings of Norway
and Eddic poems, Hallgrímur Pétursson’s Psalms of Christ’s Passion and much more. A number of changing themed exhibitions
run throughout the year in the Library Room. It serves as a bright
and elegant setting for concerts, meetings, lectures and other
events held at the Culture House. On permanent view

he Imagine Peace Tower is a work
of art conceived by the legendary artist, musician and peace advocate Yoko Ono as a beacon to world
peace. The work is in the form of a
wishing well from which a strong and
tall tower of light emerges. The words
‘Imagine Peace’ are inscribed on the
well in 24 world languages. The light
tower is composed of a number of individual lights that join together to form
a single beam. The strength, intensity
and brilliance of the light tower contin
ually changes as the particles in the air
fluctuate with the prevailing weather
and atmospheric conditions unique to
Iceland.
Every year the Imagine Peace Tower will emerge between October 9th
(Lennon’s birthday) and December 8th
(the day of his death). In addition the
Imagine Peace Tower will emanate on
New Year’s Eve, during the first week
of spring and on some rare special
occasions agreed on by the artist and
the City of Reykjavík. The electricity for
the light comes entirely from Reykjavik
Energy, which produces the electricity
from geothermal power.
The Iceland Post Company
recently published a book on Yoko
Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower in cooperation with the artist. The book, available
in Icelandic and English, comes with
a bonus DVD and a sheet of stamps
depicting the Peace Tower. The book
is distributed by Heimur, the publisher
of Iceland Review, and is available in its
webstore.
“I hope the Imagine Peace
Tower will give light to the
strong wishes of World Peace
from all corners of the planet
and give encouragement, inspiration and a sense of solidarity in
a world now filled with fear and
confusion. Let us come together
to realize a peaceful world.”
