On June 8th, a series of musical performances kicks off at
majestic Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal, centered
around the monumental, site-specific sound sculpture set up by
German artist Lukas Kühne.
Vanderbilt Hall´s transformation into a Rhythm Lab
is one of the highlights of the large-scale exhibition
“Germany – A Sense-Sational Experience” from June 3 – June 23,
made possible by the German Agricultural Marketing Board (CMA),
the German National Tourist Office, the Goethe-Institut New York
and The German Information Center.
The sound sculpture, created by Lukas Kühne, consists of
several wooden sub-bass, marimba-like bars. World-renowned
musicians Robyn Schulkowsky and Joey Baron, along with
a breathtaking line-up of guest artists, are sure to create
some good vibrations using the sound sculpture.

Lukas Kühne
is a German sculptor whose works have been shown in Europe
and North and South America. Kühne works with different
“materials” such as light, wood, and sound. Together with Robyn
Schulkowsky, he created and developed the Marimbons, and
founded the Marimbon Ensamble Montevideo (MEM) in 2003.
Robyn Schulkowsky
is a percussionist and composer. Before moving over to Germany
in 1980 to work with Karlheinz Stockhausen and the Cologne
School of composers, she taught percussion at the University of
New Mexico, Albuquerque, and has been part of the German
New-Music-scene ever since.
Joey Baron
was born in Richmond, Virginia. Since 1964, Mr Baron has
performed backing up jazz legends Carmen McRae and
Hampton Hawes. He moved to NYC in 1982, where his diverse
talents and musicality aligned him with artists such as Laurie
Anderson, Jay McShann, and Big Joe Turner. Currently through
solo concerts and with his band, Joey Baron continues to
showcase his compositions and playing; always exploring his
own brand of lyrical, soulful music.
