A Perfect Evening in Downtown Mountain View Take the train (Caltrain or VTA) to Castro Street station, sit outside and have a champagne tasting at Savory Cellars located at the station. Dine at either of my two current favorites: the new Bushido Izakaya for relaxing delicious and innovative Japanese food or Xanh for fabulous Vietnamese cuisine. See TheatreWorks production of “A Light in the Piazza" at the Center for the Performing Arts which runs thru September 19. Enjoy Castro Street's boutiques, bookstores, and ice cream parlors. Since you are taking the train go for a nightcap at whichever restaurant you did not dine, both have great cocktails and bar ambiance. The Perfect Time to be in the Bay Area Early fall brings the best weather to the Bay Area, including the coast. September is back to school, Mountain View Art and Wine Festival (Sept 11 & 12), and great beach days. I will continue to work with cruise passengers and Oracle's attendees at their annual, take over San Francisco event, Openworld 2010, Sept 19-23. Best to avoid the Moscone Center area during this week. We had to move our cruise passengers to the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, city rooms are Oracle's domain. I will recommend these visitors enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. They can bike the Golden Gate Bridge, kayak in the Bay, ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon, cheer on the Giants at AT&T Park, dine outside, and hike Angel Island. Too much fun in the sun FOR YOU? Take in the amazing Walt Disney Museum in the Presidio. Go to Golden Gate Park and watch the African Penguins feeding (10:30 & 3:30) at the California Academy of Sciences. Catch the Post Impressionist opening Sept 25, at the De Young Museum. The De Young is the only museum to have these exhibitions from the Musee D' Orsay in Paris. THE SAN FRANCISCO FLEET WEEK ASSOCIATION Announces a kick off of fundraising efforts for San Francisco Fleet Week October 7-12, 2010 The San Francisco Fleet Week Association is proud to present San Francisco Fleet Week 2010, to be held October 7-12, 2010. To kick off fundraising efforts for Fleet Week 2010, a special benefit performance of Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show will be held on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at San Francisco's Marines' Memorial Theatre (609 Sutter St., 2nd floor). Featuring honorary co-chairs Senator Diane Feinstein and former Secretary of State and U.S. Marine Veteran George P. Shultz, this annual event pays tribute to Sailors, Marines' and Coast Guardsmen serving our nation. In addition to the Parade of Ships' ship tour, the world famous Blue Angels and military band concerts, Fleet Week 2010 will include several new events including civilian and military training for disaster relief and demonstrations of U.S. Navy and Marine capabilities to assist in disaster relief and recovery in the event of a major earthquake in the Bay area. The U.S. Navy's 3rd Fleet will be sending a task force of ships, including an Amphibious Assault Ship (LHD), a Guided Missile Frigate (FFG), and a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG). Fleet Week 2010 will also be a part of the 142nd Annual Italian Heritage Parade on Sunday, October 10. As the City's oldest civic event and the nation's oldest Italian-American parade and community celebration, this year's parade will feature military bands, a color guard, a Fleet Week Grand Marshall and more. Tickets for the special benefit performance of Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show on Wednesday, May 19 are $50 and are available now at the Marines' Memorial Theatre box office, by phone at 415-7716900 and on the Web at www.marinesmemorialtheatre.com. For more information about San Francisco Fleet Week 2010, call 650-599-5057 or visit www.fleetweek.us. Those visitors with more time can enjoy a drive down the coast to Princeton Harbor and Half Moon Bay. More kayaking opportunities, go tide-pooling at the James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, enjoy a lobster roll at Sam's Chowder House (try their new restaurant in San Mateo, Osteria Coppa), golf at the Links at Half Moon Bay and listen to the bagpiper while watching the sunset from the Ritz Carlton. If visitors have little time, are on an expense account or have a recovering portfolio, I would highly recommend seeing it all from on high in the Zeppelin at Airship Ventures at Moffet Field. Afterwards they can enjoy a perfect evening in Mountain View! Maria Lange ,[email protected] CMA Wines is offering to donate 20% to the SVCA when purchasing their wines. For more information please contact June Suzuki at: http://www.cmawines.com/ Back in San Jose Renaissance aire ever Young: the Northern California Renaissance Faire The Elizabethan era may be considered Old World, but the Northern California Renaissance Faire in Hollister annually gives it a new lease on life. Back for another action-packed year from September 18 through October 17, this highly anticipated festival delivers the essence of the Renaissance’s adventure and romance—from gallant knights and fair maidens to regal queens, strolling musicians, heartpounding jousting matches, and period foods. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the festival offers another surprise that takes it to the next level. The Faire’s venue is the legendary Casa de Fruta roadside fruit stand-turned-visitor attraction, which transforms itself into Willingtown, an authentic Renaissance village, complete with a colorful marketplace and costumed denizens roaming the grounds. Head to the marketplace and browse the vast array of artisanal wares, from chain mail and swords to leather goods, jewelry and blown glass, and be sure to try your hand at one of the many fun games such as dartthrowing. Stop by any of the stages to catch a captivating performance—from the zany Manly Men in Tights, who keep the audience laughing with their swordplay and hilarious banter, to Suspended Reality, whose Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired aerial acrobatics are sure to leave you breathless. And don’t miss the pomp and circumstance of the Queen’s Royal Reception, where the queen reunites with renowned privateer and explorer Sir Francis Drake; and the Tournament of Champions, where gallant knights engage in full-contact jousting. The Mariachi & Mexican Heritage Festival Sept 15-26: The largest festival in California to celebrate Latino culture returns for yet another star-studded, dynamic event. The celebration kicks off with El Grito (Sept 15, 5pm), a free community event celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence, followed by a special performance of the acclaimed one-man show, Gaytino! (Sept 16, 8pm). This autobiographical play by Dan Guerrero, a prominent Latino independent producer for network and cable TV, focuses on the gay experience throughout decades of Chicano history. A hallmark of the festival is the ever-impressive music talent it draws to its stages. At the Noche de Serenata Gala Concert (Sept 25, 8pm), see Mexican diva Eugenia Leon, Mariachi Cobre, and other notables. And during the Concert for the American Dream (Sept 26), rock out with such artists as Grammy-winning norteno band Los Tigres del Norte, tejano/norteno group Intocable and the Latino rock, funk and hip-hop world fusion group Ozomatli. (San Jose: Various locations in downtown; www. sanjosemariachifestival.com; 408/920-6070) Stephanie Soong, Calendar Editor, [email protected] Saturdays at 6pm, the Celtic Rock Series lights up the stage. The dazzling musical lineup includes the Bay Area’s own Molly’s Revenge, Culann’s Hounds, and Tempest as well as the Young Dubliners from L.A. All that shopping, watching, laughing and cheering is sure to work up your appetite, and the Faire is happy to oblige it with a vast selection of tasty fare. You can take your pick of cuisines from Greek, Italian and Mexican to American, British and gourmet Californian, ending on a sweet note with frozen chocolate-dipped bananas, chocolates and other confections. If you want to jump right into the full Renaissance spirit, then grab a giant roasted turkey leg with all the fixings, and wash it down with a fine English ale. With so much to offer—and more— it’s no wonder why the Faire is one of the most popular events of the year. When: Sept 18–Oct 17: Weekends, 10-6. September 2 – 26, 2010 Written by Frank Higgins Directed by Rick Lombardo Stop and Smell the Roses in San Jose at America’s Best Rose Garden ~ in between the computers chips of Silicon Valley! One free attraction I always use as a stop on day trips for visitors coming into Silicon Valley is the The Municipal Rose Garden of San Jose. Now this garden has received the national distinction so many amazing volunteers have worked for the past 3 or 4 years. My vote for the next Hospitality Event-Best Attraction is this Rose Garden attraction – along with the innovative story of so many volunteers to attain the achievement. Although many people have already seen this in the news – it is worth repeating. The Municipal Rose Garden of San Jose won the distinguished award by All-America Rose Selections (AARS). Our Rose Garden received over 21,000 votes from rose garden lovers across the nation. It was through several inventive methods of social media and website to attain the votes needed. This was followed by a review of the AARS judges of all websites and gardens which received the most votes. The significant journey to this achievement was driven by over 3,000 volunteers after our Rose Garden was placed on probation because of neglect in 2005. Two prominent people organizing these volunteers’ efforts were Terry Reilly and Beverly Rose Hopper. There are over 3,500 roses and 200 rose varietals in this garden located on Naglee Avenue near Rosicruician Egyptian Museum. Amazing information and videos are found on the Friends of San Jose Rose Garden (http://www.friendssjrosegarden.org) of this journey from rags to riches of our favorite rose garden. Donna West Lighthouse Tours TheatreWorks is thrilled to bring the Bay Area its first look at SUPERIOR DONUTS, the latest work by Pulitzwer Prize-winner Tracy Letts of August: Osage County. Asberry, Julia Brothers, Gabriel Marin, Søren Oliver, and Joan Mankin, with TheatreWorks Associate Artist Leslie Martinson at the helm, SUPERIOR DONUTS plays October 6-31, 2010 (press opening October 9) at TheatreWorks at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
