MILAN 25-29 APRILE 2015
separation technique; and interesting insights about “old” issues as complex ventral
situation, open/burst giant abdomen, parastomal, lumbar, flank and perineal hernia,
floppy abdomen and diastasis and about pain after hernia surgery.
The project of Herniasurge World Guidelines for treatment of groin hernia has
also resented and discussed during the Congress.

A note also on the great participation to the General Assembly of the European
Hernia Society on Monday 27th, with the presence of more than 200 members.
The 1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia
Surgery took place in Milan, Italy, from 25th to 29th April
2015.
Totally the Congress has seen the participation of 96 different countries.
As for the Congress Venue - the MICO Congress Centre - the site of the old Fiera
of Milan, we had about 4000 sqm for Sponsor exhibition.
For the first time the five Continental Societies of hernia
joint their participation in a single and unique Convention
(37th European Hernia Society Congress, 17th Americas
Hernia Society Congress, 11th Asia-Pacific Hernia Society
Congress, 4th Afro Middle East Hernia Society Congress and 3rd Australasian Hernia
Society Congress).
In that period Milan was at the centre of world attention with the contemporaneity
of the international EXPO, starting on May 1st
It has been a great success of participation and scientific result, thanks to the efforts
of the organizers and mainly to the Chairman of the Congress, our President elect
of the Society, Giampiero Campanelli.
It has been a real example of global sharing of information among hernia surgeons
throughout the world.
The Congress had almost 3000 participants, 2750 of them registered and 200 guests,
1000 speakers (among invited speakers, free papers, video and posters presenters).
All the rooms were full of surgeons with great participation and interactivity in all
the scientific sessions.
The opening ceremony on Sunday April 26 was very suggestive, with the
participation of members who waved the flags of their countries.
As for the social program, pleasant and enjoyable, we need to mention the Faculty
Dinner in the old and fashionable Palazzo Cusani, and the amazing 1st World
Hernia Soccer Challenge - Europe vs Rest of the World, in San Siro Stadium,
where a selections of surgeons soccer players competed in a beautiful game, won
by Europe 4 to 2.
The 1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery has been a global
Congress involving thousand worldwide hernia surgeons. This is an encouraging
promise for the future organizations of World Hernia Congresses and Meetings in
a new spirit of sharing, collaboration and education.

During the live surgery sessions, on Saturday April 25, Monday April 27 and
Tuesday April 28, 17 operations have been broadcasted with a very good
participation and interest of the people present in the conference rooms, and good
performances of the surgical teams who performed the procedures.
We have attended a very rich scientific program with plenary sessions really full
of participants, expert hot topics, key notes and free paper sessions with attractive
news as the robotic approach for retromuscular repair and for posterior component

On behalf of the Americas Hernia Society I want to
extend our overwhelmingly positive response to the
1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia
Surgery and the Chairman Dr. Campanelli.
This meeting was an ambitious effort to bring together 5
international hernia societies and provide an atmosphere
of collaboration and education. The ability of surgeons
to come together and share ideas to improve the outcomes for our patients was
clearly the theme of this effort. We would like to congratulate Dr. Campanelli for
living up to the hype and as we say in America, “knocking it out of the park.” The
scientific content, collegial environment, social programs and the venue have set
the bar for all meetings to try and live up to in the future. We truly live in a global
community and to learn humbly from each other, I am sure has made an impact
on many attendees as it certainly did on me.
There were many highlights to this amazing event, but some deserve specific
mention. The congress put on a display of live surgery that I am sure will result
in direct patient benefits from refinements in the technical aspects of surgeons all
over the world. What better opportunity to learn from the masters than to watch
the world’s expert perform their hernia repair techniques live. These operations
included open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs, reoperative groin surgery,
laparoscopic ventral and incisional hernia repairs, and some of the more complex
reconstructive approaches including a retromuscular repair and a posterior
component separation with transversus abdominus release. The scientific sessions
were equally informative and allowed many perspectives to be heard in this unique
forum. Surgeons from around the globe shared their own approaches to fostering
collaboration and improving outcomes. This session allowed the formation of
bonds that hopefully one day will allow us to truly collaborate on a real time
basis for all surgeons performing hernia repairs. The entire spectrum of hernia
disease and all that entails in the care of these patients was also highlighted. From
preoperative optimization approaches, to choosing the most appropriate mesh for
the situation, to refining the surgical technique for abdominal wall reconstruction,
the attendees were not disappointed.

We at the Americas Hernia Society are extremely proud to have participated
in such a powerful and successful event and we look forward to continuing the
collaborative bounds that we have developed to share in this global community
of hernia surgeons.

Report of the APHS – Asia Pacific Hernia Society
On behalf of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society, I would
like to congratulate and express our gratitude to the
organizing committee, under the great leadership of
Professor Giampiero Campanelli for the success of
the 1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia
Surgery. Your long hours of hard working for five years
in making this possible are truly appreciated.
A history has been made that for the first time, surgeons from all over the world,
members of European Hernia Society, Americas Hernia Society, Afro-Middle
East Hernia Society, Australasian Hernia Society, and Asia Pacific Hernia society
convened to exchange knowledge and experience of abdominal wall hernia surgery.
Milan, with beauty, warmest hospitality and deep cultural heritage is indeed the
perfect place for the conference that we joyfully experienced.
The scientific program, and speakers were of highest standard and superbly
arranged. All of us benefited greatly from this meeting and came away with
more practical knowledge, new ideas, and fresh conviction of improving hernia
treatment. The true impact of this meeting to the world is immeasurable, especially
to the countries whose surgeons have less opportunity to connect with others. We
achieved our goal of being called to be in this profession to help people who suffer.

Report of the AMEHS – Afro Middle East Hernia Society
It’s with great honor and a great pleasure to be able to thank
Giampiero Campanelli and his staff for organizing for us,
who work on the Abdominal Wall Hernias, a Congress so
that scientific significance and of such stature. I think it
will remain in the times to come and will be a reference
point for all of us. Giampiero thanks ! And good luck to
all of us that we follow and we will follow this path.

We think the 1st World Congress on Abdominal Wall
Hernia that was held in Milan from 25 to 29 April 2015
was one of the best - if not the best - conference in this field
that has ever been organized. What we say not as we want
to make more great situation to what it is, but to confirm
what’s and what really that Congress has given us.
AMEHS born in 2009, and then young association, has
received such visibility that will take us to a major expansion of our customer
base and especially will give us a chance to bring innovation and research in the
Countries most distant in every sense of the African world and the Middle East.
Thanks to Prof. Campanelli and all the organizers as it was a really good job.

Report of the Australasian Hernia Society
I was honored to be part of the most successful hernia
conference in the history of hernia surgery. My sincerest
thanks first and foremost to all of our delegates for their
amazing contributions.
Second, I would like to thank all the sponsors for
supporting such an educationally stimulating meeting.
Third, I would like to thank all my peers for their tireless
contributions to the art and science of hernia surgery.
Without a doubt the 1st World Congress on Abdominal Wall Surgery in Milan
April 2015 was comprehensive and scientifically superlative with some 1000 high
quality abstracts from nearly 100 countries from 5 continents.
The live surgery sessions were exceptionally comprehensive and educational and
I was privileged to be part of it. These would not have been possible without the
willing participation of the patients. I am deeply indebted to them for trusting us.
Of course it would not have been possible without Professor Campanelli’s ability
to persuade both the patients and the demonstrators to participate.
Finally, I would like to thank Professor Campanelli for his unwavering friendship,
mentorship and leadership and I look forward to collaborating with him on many
more great projects for the benefits of our patients.

TAILORED SURGERY IN A TAILORED LIFE. A LESSON LEARNED, A LESSON TO TEACH
What is the difference between a man dressed in a suit too big, a man in a suit too tight and a man in a suit
that fits perfectly? The answer is a good tailor!!
The solution is simple when speaking only of clothing because, essentially, we just need to satisfy our own
needs with regard to comfort and with regard to our appearance.
The problem is much more complicated and varied when speaking of life and surgery.
Additional variables to be taken into consideration are essentially ethics and benefits (our own and those of
others), which is merely another way of saying well-being.
Now if we put aside ethics for a moment and concentrate on well-being, we can say abstractly (and maybe
even literally) that well-being can be interpreted as “feeling well”. That means a situation achieved by following
specific guidelines (once considered essential values) in order to feel good: we feel that the temperature is just
right, that the sound around us is pleasant, the lighting is soft, the scent is exciting, and what we are tasting in
that particular moment is delicious!

At such moments, we may have the perception that our hearts are beating calmly and that our minds are
gliding weightlessly between the sky and the sea without stalling, without getting heavy.
Indeed, to achieve this state, this “nirvana” it is needed that all the gears are perfectly aligned, well lubricated
and that the railway tracks are running parallel, kept separate, but also together, by the sleepers.
Now, let’s imagine that one of the gears and one of the tracks are our own life, we can easily think how the
other gears and the other tracks are other people lives: this means that our life functions if, and only if, other
people’s lives function as well?
Then what about the lubricant and the sleepers?
Many doubts…many questions…
Just as when the sun appears through the fog on a rainy day to light the way for someone who has just set out
towards the mountains and has momentarily lost his way, so we can find the answer. The spinning of the gears,
although in opposite directions need the perfect lubricant; and the parallel even if separate advancing of the
tracks proceeding, needs the sleepers; the lubricant and sleepers are therefore essential.
This is what we previously referred to as “guidelines” (the essential values passed on to us by our grandparents
and our mentors), act as the lubricant in the gears and the sleepers under the tracks.
This means being honest towards ourselves and towards others, recognizing our own abilities and our own
boundaries, accepting them and using them to allow ourselves to “produce” our best, not trying to climb
mountains if, in our hearts, we feel like seamen, and at the same time treating others with just as much
honesty, that is giving them what belongs to them, giving them what they deserve: Giving to Caesar what
belongs to Caesar
The answer is yes.
And this is the ethic, my friends. This is the difference between a good suit and a good life, or good surgery.
This is the basic concept that has been and continues to be the foundation of my life and of my professional
surgical career.
If, by using lubricant and sleepers we are able to enjoy life, but also give and share at least part of it with others;
if we are able to benefit from our efforts and our successes and from our results, while not forgetting that
alone, only by ourselves, we would not have made it, and be grateful to others;
if we do what we think is right, but at the same time are careful to evaluate results as objectively as possible,
not only for ourselves but also for others;
if we can understand the essence of things, but also strive to patiently pass it all on to those who see and feel
differently;
if we know that even if in a raining day above the clouds the sun is shining;
if we are able to see the bad, the difficult and the unhealthy without passing down our disillusion, keeping
always alive a smile;
if we, as Kipling said, are able to give the right importance to things, but not too much to anything;
and finally, if we can follow what was drawn on my back during one of my humanitarian mission “I do not
know what your destiny will be, but the one thing I do know is that the only ones among you who will be really
happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve – [A. Schweitzer]”, then dear Friends, maybe
we will be able to get closer, for a few wonderful moments, to the well-being that essentially means doing what
is best for ourselves and for others, in life and in surgery.
•
Tenacity and perseverance to follow our own ideals and our own nature, trying to pursue our path, but
at the same time giving importance to others involved in the path, facilitating their aims as well
•
Flexibility, elasticity, adaptability, characteristics that most of the time are innate, but for this precise
reason hard to achieve. These qualities must somehow be used to permeate the large or small “grains of
sand” inside the gears: inevitable unexpected occurrences and adverse events that in life, as in surgery, are
unpredictable. This is how these “guidelines” (values) act as essential lubricants.
And then again, we must be convinced that even if we can think, initially, that we and the others are going in
different directions, at the end we understand that the direction is the same, so…
•
Respect and sharing or at least attempting to share
•
Solidarity connecting different circumstances, another inevitable and unforeseen variable in life and
in surgery, which in different moments of life allow mutual support to achieve the final direction
•
Compassion, in the Greek and Latin sense that is feeling or at least trying to feel together...
•
Understanding the different cultures and fortune
•
Tolerance for those who seem so far from us
•
Bravery to apologize and to rebuild, bravery to forgive, bravery to say “thank you”
All of these extra “guidelines” are also sleepers that, by respecting distance, connect and keep the tracks firm.
Does this mean that, if we use lubricants and sleepers properly, the various gear wheels and the tracks will
work so well together that the shared feeling will be the well-being mentioned before?
