Improving lives through philanthropic leadership
Welcome Letter
Ranches, whether for herding cattle, dudes or
even stolen horses, are the soul of Jackson Hole.
Once the primary basis of our economy, ranches
still account for over 50% of all the privately
held land in Teton County. With the Tetons
and Gros Ventres as backdrops, their beauty is
unsurpassed, and everyone in Jackson is fiercely
proud of this gritty heritage. The three stories
of ranchers in this year’s annual report, whose
roots could not be more diverse, underscore
the same dedication to preserving our frontier
character as well as our concern for one another.
Those of us who are lucky enough to live in this spectacular valley take its stewardship
seriously. Jackson Hole is among the most philanthropic communities in the nation;
since 2001 the Foundation has consistently granted more dollars per capita than any
other community foundation in the United States. Over the past 16 years, Old Bill’s
Fun Run has raised nearly $91 million for local nonprofits, and one out of every
three families here participates.
At the Community Foundation, we combine our local knowledge, our financial
expertise and our flexibility to efficiently allocate resources for the most significant
impact. As a trusted resource, we help donors achieve their philanthropic goals,
providing charitable giving options and prudently investing their funds. Nonprofits
rely on us for professional workshops, competitive grant opportunities, our volunteer
website, and of course, Old Bill’s Fun Run. Through our Youth Philanthropy
program, the next generation is learning to recognize the most pressing local
problems and to effectively invest in the most creative and collaborative solutions.
Our sense of history, our shared values, our love of the wilderness and commitment
to each other other inspire our investment in Jackson Hole. We are enriched by this
community every day of our lives, and we do our best to return the favor.

When the plane landed in late September,
I said this is it. I don’t need to go any further.
Karl: I first visited Jackson in 1966 while looking for a
rural experience for my 6 kids. I was a part owner of Lost
Creek Ranch through 1985. I thought we’d have to leave the
valley, but then I heard about this ranch.

Tina: We discovered the Gros Ventre River Ranch
independently of each other. I was taking a photography
course, and we came up this way to take pictures. I had no
idea this place existed until then, but I saw the ranch and told
Karl how incredible it was. He said that was a coincidence,
because he’d just been talking to the park superintendent
about the property. And here we are.
People say it’s nice to be back home. And that’s how it
should feel.
Tina: The Gros Ventre River Ranch is a modern take on the traditional dude ranch experience.
Historically, guests would stay at a ranch for 4-6 weeks. They all got to know each other and enjoyed
horseback riding, fishing and just being in nature.

Karl: Our guests say that they love that their kids can run free and be totally unscheduled. Families
meet here and stay in touch, returning to the ranch each year to visit with one another.
We’ve done a lot of traveling to pursue passions we discovered here.
Tina: I learned a lot of new things when I moved here – snowmobiling, hiking, horseback riding
and fly fishing. I love the One Fly, because it’s fun and you meet people from all over the country.
I also participate in Stripping for the Cure. We wear a lot of pink, use pink flies and raise money for
breast cancer research.
Inspire
Karl: I traveled to Argentina with a group of friends to bird hunt for 35 years.
Tina and I spent
vacations in Costa Rica, Argentina and Mexico travelling by horseback for a couple of weeks at a time.
We went with Frank Bogart, the Mayor of Palm Springs. His trips were famous, because you always felt
fully immersed in the culture.
Old Bill’s was a brilliant idea, and it’s still going strong.
Karl: We’re so happy to be a part of such a giving community. The money raised through Old Bill’s
goes to excellent causes.
Tina: As a Co-Challenger, we are contributing to nonprofits that we might not support otherwise.
But it’s probably an important part of our community whether I recognize it or not. Hopefully,
by donating through Old Bill’s we’re helping to keep our community healthy.
Tina and Karl Weber both grew up in California where they met in 1980. Tina has a daughter who manages
the Gros Ventre River Ranch with her husband and their three daughters. Her son lives in Colorado with his wife
and three kids. Karl has six children and seven grandchildren, most of whom live in California. One daughter lives
in Jackson with her family. Tina graduated from Occidental College and taught elementary school for 12 years.
Karl attended Loyola Marymount University and is a successful entrepreneur and inventor. In the manufacturing
business since he was twenty, Karl built UniWeb, which makes interior store equipment. Tina and Karl are Bronze
level Co-Challengers as well as members of the Community Foundation’s Legacy Society.

Grants
2012 Competitive Grants
Through its Competitive Grants program, the Foundation supports projects with significant local impact.
Applications are reviewed twice a year by a diverse committee of community volunteers, and funding for this
program is provided by Old Bill’s Fun Run Co-Challengers, private donors and endowed funds held at the
Foundation. The Micro Grants program provides small amounts of money for projects that are unique or
unexpected and demonstrate potential to make a meaningful impact in our community.

You could say that our lives have been
divided into two parts: before we came
to Jackson and after.
Joe: We spent our lives just before
Jackson as foreign correspondents.
Right out of college, I worked for the
Chicago Sun Times covering things
that interns cover, like the courts,
police and later some investigative
journalism.
Marcia: My first job was covering the sewer
board. Fifteen years later, when Joe became
chief foreign correspondent for Cox Newspapers
based in Rome, I joined him, at first as a
freelancer. Then together we ran the Cox Bureaus
in Moscow and Beijing. We reported from some
frightening places, like Beirut, Chechnya and
Iraq. Joe doesn’t have the fear gene in his body,
but I have several to make up for it.

Marcia: I had never been to Wyoming before,
and I didn’t see why I’d want to go. But it was
gorgeous, and I felt an immediate calling to
do something about the land and keep it in
the family.

vest anymore, but we didn’t know what to do
with the rest of our lives.
Joe:
My great aunt Cissy Patterson came to
Jackson in 1916 to be a dudette at the Bar B C
Ranch. She was on the rebound from a disastrous
marriage with a Russian Count and almost
immediately fell for cowboy Cal Carrington.
Cal was a horse thief who had his hideout up
at Flat Creek Ranch. He showed it to Cissy,
because he liked her and had discovered that
she was a good rider and a good shot. She fell in
love with the place and established a homestead.
Marcia: Our involvement with the Community
Foundation was really serendipitous. We got
mailings once a year from something called Old
Bill’s Fun Run. This was right around the time
we were first thinking about giving back, feeling
this surge of patriotism that came from living
abroad. There was such a bewildering array of
nonprofits in Jackson about which we knew next
to nothing. I read in the paper about how you
could be a Co-Challenger, and it sounded like
a great idea.
Joe: People talk about how lucky we are to live in
this town, in this place, at this time. What would
it be like without philanthropy? Not so great.
There is not enough public money to solve the
problems that exist in our idyllic town – hunger,
domestic violence, illness. There’s a whole
range of things that need to be done that won’t
unless future generations are philanthropic.
It is one of the pillars of our community.
Joe Albright and Marcia Kunstel worked as foreign correspondents for over 15 years. They moved to Jackson full
time in 1999 and have been active members in the philanthropic community. Joe has devoted much of his time
to nonprofit board work for the American Heritage Center, Wyoming Council for the Humanities, Teton County
Library, Jackson Hole Historical Society, St. John’s Medical Center and Rotary Club, among others. Marcia is also
very involved with nonprofits including the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance, Greater Yellowstone Coalition,
the national board of The Wilderness Society, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole’s Competitive Grants
committee and many others. They have coauthored two books, Bombshell, covering the story of an American spy,
and Their Promised Land, exploring the history of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

I grew up at this ranch — a different house
but the same land. I’ve literally never left
my backyard.
Brad: My great-grandparents came to Teton
Village in the 1880s from Idaho, and my family
has been here ever since. My great-grandfather
was a cattle rancher who homesteaded here, and
my great-grandmother was a schoolteacher.
We’ve been in Spring Gulch since 1915 or so.
They moved from Teton Village, because there
was too much snow and too many mosquitoes.
Kate:
I grew up surrounded by farms, but
ranching was new and so was riding a western
saddle. Otherwise it was very much like the way
of life in Vermont. I came to the University of
Wyoming in the 1970s and returned for law
school, where I met Brad.

The best part of ranching is the husbandry
— having calves every March that we can
nurture and see grow.
Kate: That’s the benefit of a cow/calf operation.
But whiskey is the priority right now. We bought
a ranch in Thermopolis, where it is warmer for
the calves, and I decided I wanted to grow grapes
and make wine. Brad thought I was crazy, but he
decided that whiskey was a real possibility. He
went to research it, and all of a sudden we were
making our own.

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know people
from around the state that I might not have
otherwise through my volunteer work.
Brad: I am a trustee on the board of the
University of Wyoming, and I have noticed that I
get a lot of input at the post office from people.
In Wyoming, there is no shortage of advice about
what you’re doing. There’s never much doubt
about where people stand.

My parents educated me about philanthropy,
but so did the community.
Brad:
Like many ranchers, my parents
participated in the 4-H beef sale. Nobody
kept their proceeds; instead, they gave them
away. They always looked after their neighbors,
and they still do. I think the best thing we have
contributed to is the Community Foundation
of Jackson Hole’s operating fund. There are so
many charities with different interests and goals
in Jackson that I have come to realize that I have
no expertise in picking organizations myself.
I’m always surprised to learn that other people
are doing such different things. I’d rather give
an undesignated gift to the Foundation and let (17)
the staff decide where the money is most needed.
Kate: I grew up in a very small town. While
my parents worked hard to make it, they were
always giving back. My mom raised money for
the schools; she built the playground through
donations. It introduced me to philanthropy.
Brad: Kate and I have been very fortunate
in many ways, and I would like our children
to understand that they are very lucky people,
too, living in Jackson Hole on a ranch. We try
to teach them that some people, for whatever
reason, don’t have those same opportunities and
that they have an obligation to help. We try to
keep them involved, because someday they’ll be
running everything.
Brad and Kate Mead are both attorneys and together own and manage the Mead Ranch on Spring Gulch Road
and Wyoming Whiskey. A jack-of-all-trades, Kate still practices insurance defense litigation and is a member of
the Teton County School Board. Throughout her long history of volunteerism, she has served on the boards of the
Jackson Hole Land Trust, The Learning Center and Teton Conservation District. Brad is the grandson of former
U.S. Senator and Wyoming Governor Clifford Hansen and the brother of Wyoming’s current Governor, Matt Mead.
He has devoted himself to philanthropy through his work as a trustee of the University of Wyoming, the
Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, the American Heritage Center in Laramie, and like Kate, the
Grand Teton National Park Foundation.

Teton Valley
Community Foundation of Teton Valley Affiliate
The past five years have been incredibly successful for the Community Foundation of Teton Valley. Since
2008, the Tin Cup Challenge, our signature fundraising event (modeled after Old Bill’s), has raised more
than $4.8 million for nonprofits in Teton Valley. In 2012, donations exceeded $1 million for the second
year in a row.
(22) The generosity of an ever-expanding group of Community Challengers reflects our wide base of support.
Our programs are geared to meet challenges as varied as our donors:
• Overall, CFTV has awarded more than $110,000 to local organizations in grants.
• In 2012, fifty Teton High School seniors participated in CFTV’s pilot Youth
Philanthropy program.
• To better understand the critical human needs of Teton Valley, CFTV launched a six-month
survey and social services assessment.
• CFTV continues to foster organizational excellence among local nonprofits through workshops,
networking opportunities, and shared resources.
We are grateful for and humbled by the thriving spirit of generosity in Teton Valley and we remain
committed to growing the momentum of philanthropic giving in our community. Thank you!
