2011 Annual Report - Community Foundation of Jackson Hole
Inspire INSPIRE: serving as a leader, catalyst and resource to ensure sustainability The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole inspires the entire community to support local nonprofits and to celebrate philanthropy through an incredible annual matching grant opportunity – Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities. The next generation learns the importance of strategic giving through the Youth Philanthropy program. Nonprofits find talented new volunteers through our Volunteer Jackson Hole website. Philanthropy reinforces our fundamental humanity and our shared values, connecting us to what is truly important. Invest INVEST: devoting time, talent and treasure to positively impact the community We are a family of funds, responsibly managed and maintained. By providing superior donor services, flexible charitable giving options and prudent investment alternatives, the Community Foundation helps donors support all the causes they care about at home and around the world. We help them structure their giving to provide immediate funding or to ensure stability for nonprofits in perpetuity. Enrich ENRICH: improving lives through philanthropic leadership When we invest our time, talent or treasure, we all become philanthropists and enrich our community — regardless of our net worth. • Over the last 22 years, the Community Foundation has granted • In 2011, 48 local nonprofits received competitive grant funds. $758,700 $ 195 million . from the Foundation’s • The Community Foundation holds approximately 200 funds and $29 million in assets. • Over its lifetime, Old Bill’s Fun Run has raised over to benefit local nonprofits. • • $82.5 million Since 2001, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole has consistently than any other community foundation in the United States. granted more dollars per capita In 2011, local students received to pursue their dreams. $96,500 in scholarships table of contents 2011 Welcome Letter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Board and Staff . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Youth Philanthropy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Margaret and Cal Mathieu . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4/5 2011 Competitive Grants . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6/8 Economic Response Initiative. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 Robin and Bill Weiss . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10/11 Community Foundation Funds. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12/15 Carrie and Scott Kirkpatrick. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16/17 Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18/21 Community Foundation of Teton Valley Affiliate . . . . . 22/23 Key Financial Indicators . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 Legacy Society Members . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 25 Donors. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26/Back Cover City Kids Wilderness Project Improving lives through philanthropic leadership Welcome Letter Fifteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill had an idea that changed the course of philanthropy and profoundly affected all of our lives by inspiring each of us to invest in local nonprofits to enrich the entire community. Today it seems incredible that there once was a time when this fund raiser didn’t exist. Year 15 broke all the records. Combined with the matching funds donated by Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill and the other Co-Challengers, the grand total was $7,750,595 with a 54% match. Over the past 15 years, Old Bills Fun Run has raised over $82.5 million for Jackson Hole nonprofits, and one out of every three households participates in the event. There are currently 9 other active Old Bill’s inspired events around the country, for a combined life-time total of over $112 million invested in nonprofits. The extraordinary vision of Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill and their fellow Co-Challengers has created the moral as well as the financial foundation of Old Bill’s Fun Run. They rely on their neighbors to identify the most concerning causes and the organizations best suited to address them. Being inspired by our donors and nonprofits alike renews our conviction to improve the social, cultural, environmental and health condition in our community. Through thoughtful stewardship of our resources and prudent investment of our funds, the Community Foundation navigates through this era of uncertainty, while at the same time, heightening the impact of our work. We invest in the passionate and talented energy of those devoted to our community’s enrichment. Cal: I was a ham radio operator living in Pasadena when Pearl Harbor happened. I was working with rubber at the time, and it became hard to come by so I enlisted. There was a six month wait before I would be called to duty, so in the meantime I started working at Cal Tech with Dr. Ellis. Margaret: I was working with Dr. Ellis, too. One day after Cal and I had both been transferred to a naval ordinance test station, he called me up and we talked about our big date like we would do. It took me a while to realize he was serious. That was the beginning of a romance. Jacksonitis. There’s no cure or vaccination so you might as well make arrangements once you get that bug. Cal: We had decided to travel to Jackson, so I called Triangle X and asked to book space for 8 people in two weeks. Margaret: John Turner told him they were booked two years out, but Cal’s an optimist and left our phone number anyway. Sure enough, John called and said there had been a cancellation, so we headed to the ranch. Cal: Our middle child Janis got tonsillitis on that trip, and the doctor’s office wouldn’t make an appointment. After a couple of days of waiting, I decided to take a drive to see what was on the west bank. We asked around about land for sale hoping to look at 10 acres. Jack Huyler showed us the 465 acre Rocking H Ranch from the back of a hay wagon. I took lots of pictures back to Pasadena. That was a mistake, because it sealed the deal. I had made up my mind we were going to have a ranch. I’ve been terribly lucky. I’ve been at the right place at the right time an awful lot of times. Cal: That’s how it was with the ranch. Ours is one of the biggest conservation easements in Teton County. At the time, the structure of it – small private ownerships with shared open space – was unique, and it took quite a while to convince The Nature Conservancy that it would work. But now it’s fairly common. Margaret: It could have been developed into condominiums on top of condominiums. But we wanted it to stay this way forever. I call him Wild Bill because Old Bill’s was a wild idea. And why would he want to be called old when he could be called wild? Cal: Old Bill wanted the community to participate in philanthropy. You couldn’t get the community more involved than by using his model. The Community Foundation manages our Co-Challenger dollars, and we feel comfortable contributing because they know exactly how the nonprofits are using the funds. This model simplifies giving and has increased the volume of donations in Jackson. Margaret: Old Bill’s is a great way to be involved with all of the organizations here in a neutral way. Margaret and Cal were married in 1946, and they have three children, James, Janis and Julie, who all live in Jackson. Margaret grew up in Nebraska and followed her sister to California before the war. A woman with excellent short hand, Margaret was a sought after secretary. Her fondest memories involve her family and their horses. Cal was born in South Dakota and also lived in Kansas. His time at the naval ordinance training station was spent working on the Manhattan Project. He owned an instrument business and sold it to a major oil service company. The Mathieus enjoy watching the wildlife that frequents their ranch, attending Grand Teton Music Festival concerts and visiting with their grandchildren. (5) 2011 Com 2011 Competitive Grants Through its Competitive Grants program, the Foundation supports projects with significant local impact. Applications are reviewed twice a year by a diverse committee of community volunteers, and funding for this program is provided by Old Bill’s Fun Run Co-Challengers, private donors and endowed funds held at the Foundation. By the end of 2011, over $520,000 had been raised to mitigate the devastating effects of the economic crisis, and Jackson organizations had received $431,060. My dad always believed that western art is the one true expression of American history. No one else has our American Indian and cowboy traditions. He bought his first painting in 1958. I spent summers working at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, an organization that preserves the American Western Heritage. Though I ultimately opted to work at Medtech, our family business, rather than the Historical Center, I’ve spent the last 25 years actively involved with the organization. Robin was my friend’s blind date. He was visiting from Hawaii, so I set up the date for him. It was the first and last time either Robin or I had been to the drag races, and I don’t think she was very impressed. Despite that, we hit it off, and we were both ready to start married life and a family. Six months after we were married, the business took us to Beirut, Lebanon then back to our roots in Long Island before we headed west. We’ve been married for 42 years. Jackson is a great place for business. There are a lot of smart people in this town. We operated our business in Cody for 12 years then moved it and our family to Jackson in 1988. The people and the landscape have kept us here all these years. My involvement in philanthropic organizations in Jackson has also been very rewarding. I’ve been on the board of the Community (11) Foundation of Jackson Hole since 2005 and have found it to be very diverse in terms of interests and backgrounds. The result is a great mixture of thought and decision making. I was skeptical about the Old Bill’s concept at first. Jackson nonprofits are unique in their willingness to work together in this way. Since then, Robin and I have become Co-Challengers. Our contribution helps to cover the event costs so individual donors know 100% of their gift goes to the organization they choose and it will be matched. Our Co-Challenger gift also helps fund the Foundation’s competitive grant programs. We give directly through our Donor Advised fund at the Community Foundation. The marvelous staff provides great service, and we just go online to give in an efficient, coordinated way. Bill Weiss was born in San Diego, California, but because his father was in the Navy, his family lived all over the United States before landing in Oyster Bay, New York in 1949. After graduating from Parsons College in Fairfield, IA, Bill started his tenure at the family business. In addition to his service to the Community Foundation, Bill is very involved with the Grand Teton Music Festival, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, St. John’s Episcopal Church and many other local organizations. He and his wife, Robin, enjoy golf, tennis and spending time with their 2 children and 5 grandchildren. Scott: After visiting Jackson at 13, I promised myself I’d find my way back. I planned to be here for one season while I applied to business school in 1991. I realized that with the help of technology, I could achieve all of my goals without living in a city. In 1996, I launched Teton Capital Advisers in Jackson. Carrie: I started my career at a nonprofit that led me into computer technology. In my late twenties, I took a year off to travel. That trip was the education of a lifetime. Among other things, I learned that in many countries not working at the family business would be considered an insult. When Dad later asked me to work for him in Jackson, those conversations were a big part of why I agreed. Today, we are able to give generously because of my parents’ hard work and success. I was brought up to ask “How can I make someone’s day?” Carrie: As a Big Sister, I’m not sure I taught my mentees to fish or even that I know the secrets of fishing. But it showed me how hard it is to impact poverty and change a life. My philanthropy is aimed at presenting people with opportunities they might not otherwise have – through art performances and education or by providing the basics like food and shelter. We try to show our two girls that giving of our time and resources is important. Our Donor Advised Fund is like having a little foundation without any of the headaches. Carrie: In honor of our wedding in 1999, we received gifts to a fund at the Community Foundation. We can make one donation to our fund and spend the next year or more deciding what to support and the Foundation takes care of the rest. While many vehicles offer that functionality, the Community Foundation supports the community we love. Scott: The staff is efficient and knowledgeable. Because they perform the due diligence work and provide local expertise, we can focus on achieving our philanthropic goals rather than on research and bureaucratic paperwork. Old Bill’s is an incredible example of how personal giving can transform a community. Scott: Carrie can often see a need and work to fill it, but I’m not always so creative. Being a Co-Challenger allows us to support all of Jackson’s nonprofits and the people like Carrie who have dreams of making the world a better place. Carrie: It’s important to us to champion the concept of philanthropy, which is what our gift does. The match encourages everyone in Jackson to contribute to their passions. And nothing else feels like Old Bill’s run day. Carrie and Scott Kirkpatrick grew up in different suburbs of Philadelphia. After graduating from Boston College with a degree in Human Development, Carrie moved to Atlanta then Chicago before settling in Jackson in 1997 and working at Brandywine Funds. When not supporting innovative new programming like Vertical Harvest and Raising Girls, Carrie enjoys hiking, skiing and boating on Jackson Lake. Scott graduated from Vassar College with a degree in Political Philosophy. Subsequently, he started his hedge fund in Jackson while pursuing his mountain climbing and biking passions. Together, Carrie and Scott are raising their girls Lyla and Carly as well as their puppy Winston. (17) OLD BILL’ Old Bill’s Fun Run 2011 Helping our Community Run. In just four years, the Tin Cup Challenge, our signature fundraising event modeled after Old Bill’s, has raised more than $3.7 million for nonprofits in Teton Valley. In 2011, we exceeded $1 million in total funds raised for the first time thanks to the generosity of our Community Challengers – 30 of whom were new last year. Our Grants Program has awarded over $90,000 to local organizations, funding education and classroom initiatives, local trail and conservation projects, and resources for struggling local families (22) and individuals in our community. We continue to foster organizational excellence among local nonprofits through workshops, seminars and shared resources. We are grateful for and humbled by the thriving spirit of generosity in Teton Valley and remain committed to bringing people together through philanthropic leadership.
