GREETINGS FROM THE YMCA
Welcome and Good Evening,
It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of
the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 49th Annual Sports Award Banquet.
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a
shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living
and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal
and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in
kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our
cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities
to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the
opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your
schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and athletic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is
right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing
in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.
Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work
and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s
premier events.
Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses, corporations and organizations
participating in this year’s banquet that provided financial support for Y programs that serve the greater Bergen County community.
Again, congratulations to all here tonight and best wishes for continued
success.

DEDICATED AWARDS
Richard Poor Service
to the Community Award
Dick Poor was one of the founders
of the YMCA Athletic Achievement
Awards Banquet, now called the Sports
Award Banquet, which was started in
1966 and grew out of the Y’s pioneering interest in, and emphasis on,
sports and physical fitness as a means
of character development. He served
on the committee until his death. A
member of the YMCA Board of Managers for many years, Dick was a career
banker with a lifelong interest in both
young people and sports. He had a
strong dedication to the betterment of
life in Bergen County.
Thomas L. Della Torre

Award
Tommy Della Torre, renowned football
coach, athletic director, disciplinarian, mentor, friend and member of

and was passionate about high school
sports and the young people involved
in them.
Nicholas G. Saingas
Service to Youth Award

retirement from Public Service, he had
been a strong supporter of the Sports
Award Banquet for many years. An
avid athlete all his life, he understood
the importance of sports in the development of young people. His impact on
others was great. He was a true friend
to our youth and generously contributed his time and talents both to them
and to activities which benefited their

his life, Walt Goepel in his later years

William J. “Mickey”
Corcoran Award
This award is named after the longtime Northern Highlands and River Dell

school athletes in this area covers six
decades. “The Mentor” is a long-time
member of the YMCA Sports Award
Committee and the Bergen County
Coaches’ Association Basketball Jamboree Committee. His contributions to
high school athletics, the many students he helped, the countless number
of coaches he counseled and friends
he made along the way make Mickey
one of the legendary figures in Bergen
County athletic history.
PERSON OF THE YEAR
Bob Carcich
Bob Carcich, affectionately known by many as “Cich”, recently retired as the
second longest-standing high school athletic director in Bergen County. Bob
dedicated his life to the high school athletic community in Emerson, serving
30 years as the high school’s athletic director and acting as a leader in local,
county and state sports.
Bob launched his career at Emerson as a biology and AP biology teacher. He
taught until 1985 when he switched gears and became the athletic director
and disciplinarian.
Bob is one of Bergen County’s most successful baseball coaches, winning
three state championships, seven state sectional championships and 14
league championships. He has a win/loss record of 526-227. His varsity
baseball team won back to back championships in 2001 and 2002. Bob’s
team earned five sportsmanship awards from the baseball umpires association for exemplifying leadership, ethical behavior and fair play.
For 10 years, Bob served on the executive committee of the Bergen County
Coaches Association. He also served as the secretary/treasurer of the New
Jersey Interscholastic Conference, chairman of the Bergen County Baseball
Committee and president of the Bergen County Scholastic League. Bob has
also served as a high school basketball official for many years.
According to Bergenfield High School’s current athletic director and long time friend, Tom Curry, Bob has a great feel for coaching kids and they love playing for him.
His many awards and accomplishments include 2011 NJ State Baseball Coaches Association Man of the Year, three-time Bergen
County Coach of the Year for baseball (1992, 2001, 2007), Baldwin Hunt Service Award to Bergen County Baseball, YMCA Nick
Saingas Award in 2002, chairman of Bergen County Baseball for 29 years, BCSL/NJIC Baseball Coach of the Year 12 times, Athletic Director of the Year in Bergen County 2010, NJSCA Hall of Fame 2008, IAABO Basketball Official for 35 years, officiated

school yearbook, Bob wrote that he wanted to major in biology and work with sports. That dream was fulfilled thanks to a full
academic scholarship to attend Providence College.
During Bob’s last game at Emerson, his wife, Judy, invited some former players from various decades to support him.
“It’s all about the relationships,” said Bob, “not always about the wins and losses.”
Bob has three children, Michele, Robert and Michael, and two step-children, Kelly and Tracy. He is also grandfather to Kylie,
Morgan and Hailey.

SPORTS AWARD BANQUET HONOREES
JAMES KELLY
Richard Poor Service to the Community
An avid supporter
of the American
Special Children’s
Pilgrimage Group
(ASCPG), James
Kelly, has given his
free time to help
young people with
special physical
and developmental
needs.
The ASCPG is a non-profit organization
that unites children and young adults
with special physical or emotional needs
with volunteer caregivers for an unforgettable week in Lourdes. The week is packed
with social and spiritual activities for
over 5,000 people from Ireland, England,
Scotland, Wales, the West Indies, Croatia, Romania and the United States. The
special needs pilgrims travel without their
parents; instead, caring volunteers from
all walks of life – doctors, nurses, priests,
professionals, retirees, teachers, carpenters, students – travel with and care for
them in a family-type atmosphere.
The volunteers pay their own way and
work tirelessly to raise the funds for every
special pilgrim to experience Lourdes.
Since the inception of ASCPG, approximately 200 young people from the tristate area have traveled to Lourdes. The
organization is funded solely on private
and corporate donations and is 100%
volunteer driven. Although the pilgrimage began with European children, in
the 1990s, the ASCPG was formed by
Jerry Flood, to include pilgrims from the
United States as well. A long-time friend
of Jerry’s, James decided that it was time
to make the trip. It has now become an
annual commitment. James works each
year to raise funds through friends, family
and local businesses and organizations to
support the pilgrimage.
James is currently the Mayor of Dumont,
the town where he grew up and later
decided to raise his family. He has been a
member of the St. John’s Knights of Columbus for over 40 years, an organization
which has donated thousands of dollars
to the needy, in particular to help children
with mental handicaps. James also has a
younger brother who has Down Syndrome.
Professionally, James is the Human Resource Administrator/Assistant Comptroller at Steri-Pharma, LLC.

CHRIS LOCURTO
Inspirational Adult Award
Inspirational Youth Award
As the head
football coach
for Northern
Highlands, Chris
Locurto has led
his team to many
spectacular wins,
but the most
impressive was his
battle against meningitis.
Diagnosed at a very young age with
Ataxia-Telangiestsia, Nicholas and Matthew Leo have never let their disorder hold
them back. Born seventeen months apart,
the boys were always encouraged by their
parents to be active and they took that
advice to heart.
In February 2012, Chris contracted
bacterial meningitis. He is not sure
where he got it. It could have been
simply shaking the wrong hand at a
coaching clinic. It began with an intense
earache and then high fever followed by
becoming delusional and disoriented.
He spent the next month in and out of
a coma. His wife was told to get her
affairs in order. The doctors don’t know
how, but he fought through it.
Nick began bowling at eight years old
with the aid of a ramp. He used physics
to help him hook and curve the ball. A
student at Northern Valley Regional High
School Demarest, Nick now competes for
the Norseman Bowling Team and junior
leagues throughout the state. He has
earned two varsity letters and is poised to
receive his third in the fall. Off the lanes,
Nick has been an honor roll student and
served as the public relations officer for
Hand-in-Hand, a teen peer group that
facilitates socialization among children
with special needs.
Matthew, also a student at Northern Valley Regional High School Demarest, has
His coaching career at Northern Highlands Regional High School began in
2007, where he is currently a physical education and health teacher. Prior
to Northern Highlands he taught and
coached at Spring Valley High School.
At Spring Valley his team won the State
Section 7 title for the first time in
the school’s history. While at Northern Highlands he led the team to the
playoffs for the first time in 13 years.
The team went to the State Semi-Finals
7
for the first time in 17 years. In 2012
the team was ranked the #7 rushing
offense in New Jersey during the regular season and in 2013 they became
league champions.
LAUREN RHEIN
Inspirational Adult Award
On the honor roll,
dean’s list, volunteering at Vanderbilt University
Children’s Hospital

she is caring for
her mom who has
cancer.
Nancy Rhein, Lauren’s mom, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008.

rounds of chemo she suffered a stroke.
She had to learn how to read, write, walk
and talk, but she managed to recover.
The cancer then spread to her brain.
She had two surgeries and numerous
radiation treatments. She managed to
recover again. The cancer then spread to
her spine. She had more radiation and is
now undergoing chemo.
During this trying time, Lauren managed
to maintain her grades and kept improving her bowling. Lauren took off two semesters at Vanderbilt to help her mom.
Lauren graduated from Vanderbilt
University after studying Health Care
Administration and Economics with a
minor in Religious Studies. She was been
on the Dean’s List for two years as well

Ranked Varsity Bowling Team for four
years and was Captain for three. As a
sophomore, Lauren became the youngest captain of any sport in the history of
Vanderbilt University. In 2013 her team
finished second in the national tournament.
Lauren was featured on television in
2011 when she was the National Runner-Up in the NCAA Bowling Championships. She was seen again in the finals
in 2013 when Vanderbilt came up short
against the University of Nebraska.
Her bowling career began well before
college. At IHA she was captain of the
team for two years and all county for
four years. Lauren was named to the
North Jersey Bowling All Decade Team
and was named Bowler of the Year
twice.
Lauren also began her call to service
at IHA where she was involved in peer
ministry, Eucharistic ministry, student
ambassadors and more. Lauren has
made it her life’s mission to care for her
mother and then professionally to care
for others.
Lauren is also an avid golfer. She was
captain of the golf team in high school

coach to win a Bergen County baseball tournament title (1997), the first
Ramapo coach to win a State Sectional
title (1998) and one of two coaches
to win NBIL divisional titles. He also
brought Ramapo to the final four of
the County Baseball Tournament twice.
Joe was twice honored as Coach of the
Year by the Ridgewood news and his
1997 County Championship team was
honored by the Bergen Record and the
BCCA as Team of the Year.
On the hardwood, Joe worked under
Stan Kaminski before attaining the head
position and also left an indelible mark
at Ramapo. In his 13 years, Joe developed 12 All-County basketball players,
won the Fort Lee Holiday Tournament
three consecutive years (1998-2001),
won the NBIL Division title five years in
a row (1998-2002) and then again in
2007, made it to the final four of the
Bergen County tournament in 1999,
and won the North 1 Group 3 State
Sectional title in 2005. As for honors,
9
Joe’s 1999 team has the best sixteen
game win/loss record in NBIL history
(16-0) and Joe has personally received
Coach of the Year honors by the Ridgewood News three times as well as being
given the Howard H. Bollerman award
by BCCA in 2004.
As dedicated as he was to Ramapo,
Coach Del Buono’s dedication to athletics went outside the realm of our
school. Joe is a past president and current Secretary/Treasurer of the Bergen
County Coach’s Association, a member
of the Bergen County Tournament
Committee, was the Freshman County
Basketball tournament Chairperson for
11 years, and has been responsible for
All-County, Player of the Year and Team
of the Year selection and presentation.
Joe graduated from St. Luke’s High
School in Ho-Ho-Kus in 1964. He then
went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts
at Montclair State University. He later
attained his NJ Supervisor’s Certificate
and a Master’s of Science from Bridgeport University. He taught history at
Midland Park High School for 27 years.
Coach Joe Del Buono will always be remembered for his professionalism, work
ethic and dedication to athletics.

Charles W. Johnson
Thomas L. Della Torre Special
Achievement
In 40 years of
coaching, Chuck
Johnson has only
had four losing
seasons. During
that time he has
established himself as a leader
among football
coaches. One of his many accomplishments is that he is the only coach to
beat three parochial schools in a fiveyear period.
Chuck began his career at Bogota High
School in 1974 where he was a physical education teacher and an assistant
and head football coach. He never had
a losing season at Bogota.
In 1984, he moved to Ridgewood High
School where he became a wellness
teacher and the head football coach.
He has also coached baseball and girls
basketball. While at Ridgewood, his
team won the Group IV Section One
State Championships in 2003 and
2004. His teams have gone to the
playoffs every year, except one, since
1998.
In addition to coaching, Chuck is fully
committed to teaching. With the help
of colleague Sheryl Soucy, he developed an entirely new wellness-based
curriculum for Ridgewood High School
physical education students.
Chuck believes that his success in
coaching and teaching is based on
creating a “relaxed, comfortable working relationship with each student and
each athlete.” He creates a rapport
to “promote engagement and performance of the learner/athlete.” He
helps each player use their skills to
their highest potential.
team in 1974. After college, Chuck
played semi-pro baseball as a part of
the Ridgewood Stan Musial Team and
the Ridgewood Suburban League Team,
where he won three state championships.
STEVEN SCHAPIRO
Courageous Youth Award
Top Hockey Defenseman for St.
Joseph Regional
High School, Steven Shapiro would
never have guessed
that his hockey
career and his life
would be put on
hold his senior year
of high school.
Diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, Steven
was devastated. But instead of giving
up, Steven decided to fight through his
cancer and get his life back. A diagnosis like this could certainly have meant
the end of Steven’s hockey career.
Instead, Steven used it as a motivator.
In between treatments he would go
to games and practices to be with his
teammates.
His awards include the Rutgers Cup
Winner in 1986 for Outstanding
Football Team in Northern New Jersey,
John F. Bateman Award for Outstanding High School Football Coach in New
Jersey by Rutgers Alumni in 2006,
he was inducted into the New Jersey
Scholastic Coaches Association Hall
of Fame in 2002 and the Lou Rettino
Award for Outstanding Tri-State Area
High School Coach of the Week by the
New York Giants in 1998, 2004 and
2012.
After 3 cycles of chemo therapy in a
four-month span, Steven was back on
the ice where he should be. His first
game back was a 6-1 win over Pascack
Valley. According to his coach, “he
hadn’t missed a beat.”
His personal athletic career was also
at Ridgewood High School where he
played varsity baseball and football
and was the captain of the football
team in 1969. He then went on to
Gettysburg College where he earned
three varsity letters for football and
four varsity letters for baseball. He
was all the captain of the baseball
During his hockey career, Steven
played in back-to-back championships
with the Kodiak Hockey Club (2007
– 2008, 2008 – 2009). He won the
division championship in Delaware’s
Flight on Ice Tournament in 20092010. In his two years playing at St.
Joseph’s Regional, the team played in
the league finals.
10
Steven Shapiro was voted assistant
captain by his teammates prior to his
diagnosis. He showed leadership and
determination through his treatment
and by getting back on the ice with his
teammates.
Steven is now playing Junior Hockey
for the Avalanche organization.
