Welcome Curlers, Sponsors, Volunteers and Fans
On behalf of CurlManitoba’ s Board of Directors, I

participating in 2011 Tim Horton’s Senior
Women's Provincial Curling Championship and
the 2011 Strathcona Senior Men’s Provincial
Curling Championship being held at the Heather

I know the participants have worked very hard
both on and off the ice in hopes of representing Manitoba later this season.
This year our provincial winners will represent Manitoba at the National Senior
Championships to be held in Digby, Nova Scotia on March 19 – 26, 2011.
On behalf of all curlers in Manitoba, I would like to thank our Title Sponsors
for their generous support. Tim Horton’s who is in their first year sponsoring
this event and a long time supporter of curling and the Strathcona Trustees
who are keeping the name of that great Club alive through their sponsorship.
Thanks also to all our local sponsors who support these events at the club
level. CurlManitoba continues to have great support from sponsorships all
over the province in all of our events.
Special thanks to organizing committee Co Chairs Al Handford & Jim Sansom
and the many volunteers at the Heather Curling Club for hosting both the
Women’s and Mens’ Senior Curling Championships. You have given
countless hours of time and energy to make these Championships a special
memory for everyone. Your passion for curling is what makes this sport so
great.

The Heather Curling Club
A brief history
The Heather Curling Club was formed in 1915 and the curling club was built
just off Marion Street near Braemar Ave. The present facility at 120 Youville
Street was built nearly 50 years later in 1965. The Club is located in an older
part of St Boniface but serves more than 1400 curlers from all parts of the city
and some from nearby rural communities. However it seems that the majority
of curlers reside in or close to St. Boniface and St Vital.
The curling leagues and the demographics are quite diverse. There are more
that 1400 curlers registered in casual and competitive leagues. Men’s,
women’s, senior men’s, senior women’s and mixed leagues. The club is a
community based organization and the doors are open to all curlers and their
guests.
To serve as host to the 2011 Senior Provincial Championships is an honor
and we welcome all of the curlers as well as the spectators. We want
everyone to feel at home and our more than 100 volunteers and staff are
anxious to help.
In the past the Heather Curling Club has hosted Provincial, Canadian and
World Curling Championships. These venues bring to the community a
broader range of participants and spectators. These events help to bring in an
additional audience which allows us to showcase the facility on a year round
basis. It also allows the community at large to attend high profile events in
their community.
When the curling ends in April the summer venue keeps the club busy. The
facility is leased to different community groups more than ten times per year.
The relationship with Folklorama dates back approximately 40 years. In
recent years India and Brazil have put on some very entertaining events
depicting the culture from their respective countries. It is estimated that the
facility is used by more than 20,000 people during the non-curling season.
We welcome all of our guests to attend these events this summer.
Over the years the Heather has played host to a variety of venues including
weddings, socials, flea markets, pool tournaments and antique shows.
The Curling Club could not operate without its volunteers. This has been the
case for nearly 100 years. It is estimated that the club has as many as 50
volunteers active on a regular basis to keep the programs and the more than
10 leagues running. The estimated number of volunteer hours contributed
annually is impressive and encouraging.

Strathcona Curling Club
On a Sunday morning in 1908 after church, three men
got to talking. From that casual chat of R.J. Gourley,
J.T. Haig, and Walter Payne, the formation of the
Strathcona Curling Club began. The contract for the
building was signed December 29, 1908 and the rink
was ready for curling by February 1, 1909.
The five sheet club was located just north of Portage
Avenue between Furby and Langside Streets. This
facility served its members until the end of the
1967/68 season when the club’s property was sold.
The Club itself operated in other facilities until the
end of the 1981/82 season.
This championship is sponsored by the Strathcona Curling Club. The original trustees
are Jack Callum, Lyle Henry, and Bruce M. Hudson. Bob Scales has taken Lyle
Henry’s position for the 2009 season onward. The trustees are in care of the
presentation of trust funds to Curl Manitoba to conduct the Provincial Senior Men’s
Curling Championship in perpetuity. The Championship has been in existence since
1985.
The Strathcona Trophy, emblematic of the Provincial Senior Men’s Championship, is
presented for annual competition to recognize the contribution to curling made by the
Strathcona at the executive and competitive levels, nationally, provincially and
locally.
Three members of the club served as President of the Dominion Curling Association
(forerunner of the CCA) - Senator John T. Haig, Gordon M. Hudson, and Jack
Dutton. Nine members served as President of the MCA -Senator John T. Haig, John
S. McDiarmid, Robert J. Gourley, Gordon M. Hudson, Clifford R. Hudson, Jack
Dutton, J. Ken Watson, Leo E. Johnson, and Bruce M. Hudson.
On the ice, Strathcona’s rinks captured seven Brier Championships – Gordon M.
Hudson (1928 & ‘29), Robert J. Gourley (1931), Leo E. Johnson (1934) and J. Ken
Watson (1936, ‘42 & ‘49). In addition to the Brier winners, Strathcona rinks won
eleven more provincial championships with Ross Kennedy, Albert Wakefield, J. Ken
Watson, Leo Johnson (2), Roy Forsyth (2), Mac Scales, Norm Houck, and Bruce M.
Hudson (2) as skips.
The Strathcona Curling Club has forever etched its name in the history books of
curling in Manitoba and Canada and although it ceases to exist as a club entity, it lives
on through its Curling Championship namesake.

Year of First Provincial Senior Women’s Championship:
1969
Format:
From 1969 – 1973 the championship involved 4 separate playdowns of 4 teams to
declare a winner, that winner would then advance to a 4 team provincial under a semi
modified championship format. In 1974, the championship changed to 16 teams
playing a semi -modified double knockout draw. In 2000, the format changed to the
current round robin draw with page playoff.
